Abstract:With the advent of metaverse, the forms of cultural exchange between countries are increasingly diversified. In particular, the game industry plays an important role in cultural communication in this new era. This paper selects the current popular open world action adventure game ‘Genshin Impact’ developed by the Chinese game company HoYoverse as the research object, and mainly focuses on the translation strategies applied in translating culture-specific items in the game characters’ names and voice-overs. ‘Genshin Impact’ is one of the Chinese games that are successfully exported and localized in Korea as well as English-speaking societies; therefore, the analysis of the translation strategies differentiated according to different cultures will be conducive to exporting and localizing games. To this end, this paper analyzed culture-specific items and investigated how the translation strategies are differentiated.

Abstract:Video game, as an emerging media, has developed by leaps and bounds in recent years. As one of the most popular forms of leisure and entertainment today, it is referred to as the “ninth art”. Its commercial and cultural values have influenced people in a new generation. The translation of names in video games (simplified as ‘game’ hereinafter) has become an important topic for many people nowadays. In current game development, most of the games are packaged with the names of source languages, which makes foreign players choose games with deviations. Thus, it is a drawback for overseas promotion of games in the source language and the introduction of foreign games into a country. Therefore, it is required to explain the translation of game names from the perspective of socio-semiotics and summarize the characteristics and translation strategies of the translation of texts based on the analysis of successful game name translations. Thus, this study is conducted to provide a reference for the translation of game names.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the digital technology, more and more e-sports games are accepted and recognized by the public. There are many games imported from abroad in Chinese gaming market. In addition to their super-excellent quality, what is more important is that they have achieved successful game localization after entering China. The most crucial aspect of game localization is translation of game texts, and translators often need to choose different translation strategies for different types of game texts to meet the needs of the target market and audiences. By analyzing the translation texts of the popular game League of Legends, it can be found that comprehensively applying various translation methods to different game texts of the game, its translation quality can be improved, making it much easier for the target audience to accept it.

Abstract:This thesis examines the localization of the DLC "Phantom Liberty" in the video game "Cyberpunk 2077" using Yang Shizhang's cultural adaptation strategy. It explores four sub-strategies: cultural assimilation, cultural weakening, cultural transformation, and cultural beautification. The localization process faces challenges due to the extensive volume of game text and the inclusion of science fiction terminology and cultural references. Previous research on game localization and cultural adaptation strategies is reviewed, highlighting the significance of cultural adaptation in game translation. Factors such as playability, censorship, game experience, and business practices are considered. Through a case study of the Chinese localization of "Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty", focusing on subtitles and dialogue translations, it is concluded that the localization team effectively employs cultural adaptation strategies to enhance the immersion and enjoyment of Chinese players. The thesis suggests that the gaming industry should prioritize cultural adaptation patterns in video game localization.

Abstract:Translation is a bridge for information transfer between different languages and cultures. In cross-cultural communication, translation helps people understand and communicate information and opinions in different cultural contexts. This paper focuses on the presentation of Guilin landscapes and cultural resources which integrated in the translation of Genshin Impact . By analyzing the game name, the opera clips, the geographical names in the game and some other elements, this paper explores how to balance the relationship between preserving the original cultural characteristics and adapting to the needs of the target culture in the process of cross-cultural translation and puts forward the relevant revelations: naturalized translation can help foreign players understand the plot and elements of the game, while appropriate alienation translation can show the unique charm of Guilin's local scenic spots and traditional culture better, and It also attracts foreign players to explore the local culture and human charms behind the names of these characters.

Abstract:With the rapid evolution of the Internet, the electronic sports culture industry has flourished. An increasing number of foreign online games have been introduced, yet there remains a dearth of research on effective translation strategies for localizing English game websites. The localization and translation of game websites encompass a multitude of elements, including game backgrounds, character skill dialogues, and cultural adaptation. Eco-translation studies offer translators a well-coordinated process of selection and adaptation, empowering them to present a superior localized version from multiple perspectives. Using the American online game “League of Legends” as a case in point, this study delves into how translators can employ eco-translation principles to attain effective communication and align with the intended audience by considering the translation ecosystem. The objective is to identify localization and translation strategies for game websites that elevate players’ gaming experience.

Abstract:With the development of globalization, international communication is becoming more and more frequent, and cross-cultural communication emerges as the times require. Translation is the hub of intercultural communication. Different text backgrounds show different translation styles. With the promotion of today’s network technology, people’s ability to access information is more efficient. The translated texts are no longer confined to books, newspapers, etc., and game translation has also poured into the public’s field of vision. Many of today’s hottest games have been developed by foreign companies and then introduced by Chinese companies. According to the China Internet Center, the number of online game users in China exceeds 420 million. As a result, people are increasingly concerned about the quality of game translation. From the cross-cultural perspective, this paper discusses the translation features of game characters and analyzes how game translation embodies the purpose of cross-cultural communication.

The aim of this project is to give a reference to domestic games that go abroad in the future and help Chinese culture go out better. This thesis uses descriptive analysis and literature research methods to analyse the English translation of culture-loaded words in the Chinese game Genshin Impact from a cross-cultural perspective, and finds through the research that the English translation strategy of the game is mainly domestication, supplemented by foreinization.

Abstract:Chinese culture-loaded words refer to the words, phrases, or idioms symbolizing unique features of Chinese culture. There are many Chinese culture-loaded words in the process of reading or translating Chinese literary works, intercultural communication. It’s accurate translation of Chinese culture-loaded words is conducive to the development of linguistic, and it is of vital importance for translation and intercultural communication. This article systematically introduces five kinds of Chinese culture-loaded words, thus summarizing foreignization and domestication translation strategy based on relevance translation theory, equivalence translation theory. Through analysis of examples, it lists different translation methods, aiming at choosing the best solution to translate different Chinese culture-loaded words. It not only enables readers to gain better understanding of Chinese literary and make intercultural communication, but also makes great contribution to diffuse Chinese culture around the world.

Abstract:In the context of the new century that sees the world is undergoing the greatest changes, cultural export and infiltration serves as a crucial channel for China in promoting its cultural soft power and furthering international cooperation and exchanges. Moreover, Song Ci plays an indelible role in Chinese cultural development and culture-loaded words in Song Ci embody specific language features. For this reason, the paper analyze the versions of celebrated translators, including Xu Yuanchong, Lin yutang and Kenneth Rexroth. It also classifies the culture-loaded words and generalizes its translation strategies and method. The paper points out that the two translation strategies, domestication and foreignization, are unity of opposites which complement each other. Translation scholars should combine the advantages and disadvantages of each translation strategy with their translation purposes so as to improve the quality of translation and further contribute to the spread of Chinese culture.
A Study on Chinese Single-Player Video Game Title Translation from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

Abstract:: As video games gain popularity worldwide and become one of the most common entertainment forms in the digital era, the game’s title is given both commercial value and entertainment value. In the process of translation, in order to achieve these two values, the correct translation theory and strategy need to be adopted. Translating Chinese game titles accurately and effectively into English is challenging for Chinese translators. The idea “the end justifies the means” from Skopos Theory indicates that the translation effects decide translation strategies. Based on Skopos Theory, this paper explores the translation of Chinese game titles, and provides suggestions about translation methods for Chinese game translators to facilitate Chinese game developers’ goal of going global.

Abstract:Games and Culture, Ahead of Print. This article investigates the impact of using pivot language on the quality of game localization via a case study on the Japanese game Dark Souls 3. It first discusses the indirectness of the source text and the complexity of the target text in game localization by highlighting the "born translated" nature of the game narrative design. It then explicates the intricacy of having game audio voiced over in English only and including both direct and indirect translations in the localization workflow. It demonstrates the complication in evaluating localization quality from players' perspectives and suggests that using English as a pivot language has certain advantages in ensuring multimodal cohesiveness in game localization. The rationale behind the localization approach is then explored through the lens of the mukokuseki strategy, which suggests that the application of pivot translation is driven by market globalization and, ultimately, the pursuit of economic gain.

Abstract:Culture-specific items (CSIs) constitute a critical component within the realm of cultural translation, particularly evident in the context of China’s widely participated CET-4 and CET-6 (College English Test Band 4 and Band 6). These examinations have garnered increasing scholarly attention due to their substantial influence on language education and international communication. Drawing inspiration from Nida’s (1945) cultural criteria and Newmark’s (1988) translation strategies, this comprehensive study delves into the intricacies of CET-4 and CET-6 CSIs spanning the decade from 2013 to 2023. The findings reveal that diverse types of CSIs necessitate distinct translation strategies, influenced by political, economic, sociocultural factors, and translation purposes. Moreover, a majority of these CSI employ a combination of translation strategies to fulfill their translation objectives. In essence, this study analyzes CSIs in China’s CET-4 and CET-6 English tests, enhancing the understanding of cultural translation and improving the cultural translation skills. It reveals that different CSIs require distinct translation strategies influenced by various factors, providing valuable insights for translators, students and educators.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the translation strategies adopted by the translator in translating the Chinese novel Big Breast and Wide Hips into English, as well as the factors influencing the translator’s choice of translation strategies, by using the descriptive research method and culture-specific items (hereafter referred to as CSI). Eight translation strategies are examined in the data analysis: 1) substitution; 2) transliteration; 3) free translation; 4) literal translation; 5) omission; 6) literal translation plus amplified translation; 7) literal translation plus explanation; 8) free translation plus substitution. The findings of the study show that the type of CSI influences the choice of translation strategy. Furthermore, the results suggest that translation strategies should not be developed on the basis of subjective assumptions or hasty generalisations about the expectation of the audience. Rather, they should be based on the specific situation of the culture-specific items.

Abstract:Culture-loaded words are of great importance in translation and play a significant role in promoting cross-cultural communication. At the same time, they also pose a great barrier to translators. Lu Xun’s The True Story of Ah Q and Shen Congwen’s Border Town are both masterpieces, and there are a large number of culture-loaded words in these two novels. Yang Xianyi and Dai Naidie as well as the famous translator Lyell have translated The True Story of Ah Q to English. Ching Ti and Robert Payne as well as Kinkley also have translated Border Town to English, introducing it to foreign readers. As for Chinese-English translation, Professor Wang Jianguo has put forward “condensation strategy”, holding the view that this translation strategy is the only way in Chinese-English translation, which can also be applicable to the translation of culture-loaded words. The purpose of “condensation” is to eliminate ambiguity and limit readers’ imagination, providing them with more accurate understanding. This thesis will employ “condensation strategy” to explore the translation of culture-loaded words in the two versions of The True Story of Ah Q and Border Town.

Abstract:The given article deals with the study of game localization as a new professional sphere and a new branch in translation, as well as with the peculiarities of translators’ and localizers’ work in it, their problems, principles and strategies. The purpose, objectives and methodological basis of the study determined a set of general scientific methods and operations, namely: observation, induction and deduction, analysis and synthesis, taxonomy and modelling for theoretical understanding, generalization, classification and description of the structure and content of the phenomenon. Special linguistic methods were also used: descriptive, structural (distributive, contextual, transformational analysis, etc.), functional, contextual-interpretative methods. Games have gone a long way from the first and most basic kinds, involved in ritual activities many centuries ago, to the level of the modern ever-changing game industry which now makes up the biggest part in the entertainment software industry owing to its massive influence, popularity and financial success all around the world as well as in Ukraine. Localization industry, which has been developing since the middle of the XX century, contributed to this success, allowing game studios and their publishers to find their customers not only in the USA and Japan but almost everywhere. Despite its importance as one of key processes in content production, localization hasn’t been studied enough and only now is receiving the scientific attention that it deserves and the due recognition as a distinct and multifaceted branch, integrally related to and based on translation. The main localization lexical and context-grammatical obstacles were studied: proper names, in-game realia and terminology, intertextuality, variables, keys and pieces of code, spatial limitations, contextual limitations due to indirect and mediated communications, the form of presenting the assets to be localized and the tight deadlines.

Abstract:In translation studies, the role of the translator is becoming more and more conspicuous. Despite the fact that translation is a transfer from one language to another, especially a semantic one, the role of the translator is, on no account, a simple proxy of technological communication or a passive transcultural mediator. During recent years, scholars have conducted an array of researches on translation process, from the perspective of linguistics, cognitive psychology, psychological linguistics, etc. As for translation process, it is imperative that the translator take various questions into consideration, such as the characteristics of the target language, the cultural factors of the target language, the perception of the original text, the translator’s habits, etc. The English translation of Yuewei Caotang Biji by Yi Izzy Yu and John Yu Branscum has been conceived of as popular in the English world, and has achieved superb effect of transcultural communication. This translated work’s strategy of translating as editing has substantial effects in its’ success, which renders this book easily available to readers in the target culture.

Abstract:Studying video game localisation from a translation perspective is an approach that has been gaining impetus since the early 2010s, with a number of studies focusing on aspects such as translation strategies or cultural adaptation. This article examines video game localisation as 'homecoming' in the game Total War: Three Kingdoms by comparing the differences between the text assets in the English and Chinese versions of the game, as well as the original Chinese novel San Guo Yan Yi (Romance of the Three Kingdoms) and related Chinese works. The article examines the hidden indirectness in this localisation in relation to four aspects: the number of languages involved, the complexity of the mediating texts, the participants, and the medium and multimodality of the game. It also emphasises the need to extend the traditional understanding of indirect translation to include the localisation of video games adapted from classic works.
