Abstract:In the present work, cross-section samples cut out after the friction stir welding and friction stir processing of 35-mm-thick aluminum-magnesium alloy AA5056 sheets were investigated. During the research, welding parameters were selected such as the tool pressing force to the workpiece material, the welding speed, and the tool rotation speed. The macrostructure of samples produced at the initial mode selection was represented by a rather defective structure with the presence of large discontinuities in the stir zone of the processed material. It was found that with increasing the tool pressing force and the welding speed, the number of defects in the stir zone decreased. When optimal modes of friction stir processing are achieved, there are no defects in the stir zone throughout the thickness of the workpiece, and the structure is represented by a mixture of material flows along the tool contour.
