Abstract:As one of professional basic courses for engineering students (graduate and senior undergraduate students), the curriculum labeled by 'stochastic processes' is the foundation for the following courses including digital signal processing, information theory, etc. In many colleges or universities, teachers take this subject as a pure mathematical course. In such a way, students' enthusiasm can not be attracted effectively since there is lack of some corresponding simulation examples and practical cases to illustrate. As a result, the teaching effectiveness is unsatisfactory. In connection with the characteristics of engineering students and the experience of author's teaching practice in recent years, this paper proposes several effective teaching methods. Firstly, we argue that a lecture for this curriculum should teach students combined with physical concepts. Secondly, the lecture should teach the students by combining MATLAB simulation experiments. Finally, we should teach the course by performing some practical projects (such as experimental reports). This kind of teaching style has been proven to be well pertinent to engineering students. Not only could the students understand the basic concepts in deep but also they could improve the capability to use the mathematical course as a tool in future. Teaching evaluation results show that the new teaching method for engineering students can achieve a higher score.
