Abstract:Atrazine, a herbicide used widely, could not be effectively removed from waters by chemical or biological processes. In this work, the performances and mechanisms for atrazine degradation were examined by persulfate (PS) activation with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and graphene (GR) composites at various conditions including dosages of nZVI/GR and PS, pH value, temperature and natural organic matters (NOM). Results showed that mass ratio of 5:1 for nZVI to GR exhibited the highest efficiency for catalytic degradation of atrazine when 92.1% of atrazine was removed within 21 min. The degradation efficiencies of atrazine increased when PS concentration increased from O-2 to 1.0 mM, and were favored in acidic pH and high temperature, while was not affected by NOM with a concentration less than 4 mg/L. Electron spin resonance and radical quenching studies showed that both center dot OH and SO4 center dot- were mainly produced on the surface of nZVI/GR, while SO4 center dot- was the predominant radicals responsible for the degradation of atrazine. Mechanisms for atrazine degradation were also proposed on the basis of XRD and XPS analysis. And its degradation pathways involved in dealkylation, alkylic hydroxylation, dechlorination-hydroxylation, and alkylic oxidation using LC/MS/MS techniques. These results could provide a better understanding of the application of nZVI/GR-PS system for atrazine removal from waters.

Abstract:This study investigated the degradation of propranolol (PRO), a beta (β)-blockers, by nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) activated persulfate (PS) under ultrasonic irradiation. Effects of several critical factors were evaluated, inclusive of PS concentration, nZVI dosage, ultrasound power, initial pH, common anions, and chelating agent on PRO degradation kinetics. Higher PS concentration, nZVI dosage and ultrasound power as well as acidic pH favored the PRO degradation. Conversely, anions and chelating agent took on the inhibitory effect towards PRO degradation to different extents. Furthermore, the variations of morphology and surface composition of nZVI before and after the reaction were characterized by TEM, XRD and XPS. Finally, on the basis of identified degradation intermediates by LC/MS/MS analysis, this work tentatively proposed the degradation pathways. These encouraging results suggest that US/nZVI/PS process is a promising strategy for the treatment of PRO-induced water pollutant.

Abstract:Sulfamethazine (SMZ) is one of the most widely used sulfonamides and is frequently detected in water resources, posing threats to human and ecological health. To address this concern, SMZ degradation was investigated using nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) supported on an organo-montmorillonite (OMt) composite (nZVI/OMt), which was synthesized by reduction of Fe2+ with NaBH4, to activate persulfate (PS). Up to 97% degradation of 20 mg/L SMZ was achieved within 10 min using 1.5mM nZVI/OMt (mass/mass, 3/1) and 4mM persulfate at pH 6.8 and 25 degrees C. Experimental results indicated that SMZ degradation obeyed pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics, and the observed pseudo-first-order rate constant (k(obs)) in the nZVI/OMt-activated PS process was 1.5 times that for the nZVI-activated PS process. SMZ transformation was improved by increasing the PS concentration and temperature. Natural water constituents, such as Cl-, NO3-, and humic acid, slightly inhibited SMZ degradation, whereas SMZ transformation was significantly reduced by HCO3-. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical scavenger experiments demonstrated that both (OH)-O-center dot and SO4 center dot- participated in SMZ degradation; however, SO4 center dot- was the dominant reaction mechanism. Degradation products were analyzed by UPLC-QTOF-MS and confirmed three reaction pathways: cleavage of the S-N bond; smiles-type rearrangement; and, oxidation of the aniline moiety. Overall, the experimental results suggest that nZVI/OMt-activated PS oxidation is an easy, lowcost, and efficient method for rapid remediation of SMZ-contaminated water.

Abstract:To investigate the degradation characteristics and mechanism of acetamiprid and thiamethoxam under the system of montmorillonite-loaded nano zero-valent iron activated persulfate, a novel nanocomposite material M-nZVI was prepared by liquid phase reduction method using montmorillonite as raw material. The effect of the nanocomposite material on the degradation of acetamiprid and thiamethoxam in water by the activation of persulfate was investigated. The results showed that the degradation of acetamiprid and thiamethoxam by single nano zero-valent iron activated persulfate was only 43% and 49%, indicating that the nano zero-valent iron has the deficiencies of being easy to oxidize and easy to be agglomerated, which led to a significant reduction of its reactivity. However, the ability to activate persulfate was greatly enhanced after the nano-zero-valent iron was modified by montmorillonite, and the degradation of acetamiprid and thiamethoxam by the modified material could reach 100% within 60 min, and the material was stable, and the degradation rate could still reach 100% after 90 days of storage. Therefore, the modified nano zero-valent iron-activated persulfate technology is promising for the remediation of neonicotinoid pesticides, but the modification method should be adjusted accordingly for different pollutants, and in-depth explorations should be carried out subsequently.

Abstract:A novel composite (nZVI/HNTs) was prepared via incorporating nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) for degrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) with existence of persulfate (PS). The adsorption process of nZVI/HNTs to TCH conformed to the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and its maximum adsorption capacity was 76.62 mg·g −1 . Furthermore, the nZVI/HNTs + PS system exhibited satisfactory degradation efficiency (84.21%) for TCH, and stable nZVI/HNTs (Fe leaching < 0.001 mg·L −1 ) could be reused. When nZVI/HNTs dosage, PS dosage and temperature increased, TCH degradation could be enhanced. After four cycling, nZVI/HNTs + PS system had still 65.8% degradation for TCH. The quenching tests and EPR analysis evidenced that SO 4 •− was predominant instead of •OH in such system. Three possible pathways of TCH degradation were provided through the liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (LC–MS) determination. Meanwhile, the biological toxicity prediction analysis indicated that the nZVI/HNTs + PS system would be an environment friendly treatment method toward TCH pollution.

Abstract:Recently, persulfate has caught the attention of groundwater remediation practitioners as a promising oxidant for in situ chemical oxidation. In this study, a method was applied to treat a selection of hazardous organic compounds using nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) particles as activators for persulfate. The results show that degradation of these organic compounds using nZVI-activated persulfate is more effective than nZVI alone. For example, the degradation of naphthalene by nZVI-activated persulfate was >99% compared to <10% by nZVI alone. Despite the higher effectiveness, the nZVI particles were passivated quickly following exposure to persulfate, causing the reaction rate to reduce to a magnitude representative of an unactivated persulfate system. Abstract:In this study, sulfide-modified nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) was employed to activate persulfate (PS) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for the removal of sulfamethazine (SMT). The potential influencing factors, such as oxidant concentration, SMT concentration, Fe/S molar ratio and initial pH, were examined. The removal of SMT in the S-nZVI/PS system increased with the increasing PS concentration, while there was an optimum H2O2 concentration in the S-nZVI/H2O2 system. The S-nZVI/H2O2 system showed much stronger oxidative capacity than the S-nZVI/PS system under the same fitting condition. Moreover, the S-nZVI/PS system was more susceptible to the molar ratio of Fe/S in S-nZVI, and a higher SMT removal was achieved under conditions of Fe/S >= 40. Nevertheless, the S-nZVI/PS system was efficient over a wide pH range of 3-9, while the efficient pH in the S-nZVI/H2O2 system was confined to just 3. In addition, the SMT removal by the S-nZVI/PS system was further examined in simulated groundwater and it was found that the influence of groundwater components on the removal of SMT was insignificant over the pH range of 5-8, but a notable negative effect was observed at pH 9.

Abstract:The threat caused by the misuse of antibiotics to ecology and human health has been aroused an extensive attention. Developing cost-effective techniques for removing antibiotics needs to put on the agenda. In current research, the degradation mechanism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) driven persulfate, together with the potential risk of intermediates were studied. The degradation of SMX followed a pseudo-first order kinetics reaction with kobs at 0.1176 min-1. Both SO4•− and •OH were responsible for the degradation of SMX, and SO4•− was the predominant free radical. XPS analysis demonstrated that reduced sulfide species promoted the conversion of Fe (III) to Fe (II), resulting in the higher transformation rate of SMX. Six intermediates products were generated through hydroxylation, dehydration condensation, nucleophilic reaction, and hydrolysis. The risk of intermediates products is subsequently assessed using E. coli as a model microorganism. After E.coli exposure to intermediates for 24 h, the upmetabolism of carbohydrate, nucleotide, citrate acid cycle and downmetabolism of glutathione, sphingolipid, galactose by metabolomics analysis identified that SMX was effectively detoxified by oxidation treatment. These findings not only clarified the superiority of S-nZVI/persulfate, but also generated a novel insight into the security of advanced oxidation processes.

Abstract:The advanced oxidation process based on persulfate has a broad application prospect in the remediation of organic pollutants. As an effective, low-cost and environmentally friendly material, nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) can effectively activate persulfate (nZVI/PS) to generate strongly oxidizing sulfate radical for removing organic pollutants in the environment. In this review, we first clarify the activation pathway of nZVI activated persulfate including direct activation and indirect activation. Direct activation means that the electrons released by nZVI directly participate in the activation of PS; indirect activation means that Fe0 corrodes to generate Fe2+, and Fe2+ further activate the persulfate. Then, the mechanism of nZVI/PS system to degrade organic pollutants including electron transfer, hydrogen extraction and addition reactions are also discussed. Finally, combined with the activation pathway and the mechanism of degrading organic pollutants, we propose several prospects for the future research direction of nZVI activated persulfate. As a result, this review provides a theoretical basis for the nZVI/PS advanced oxidation system to remediate actual sites contaminated with organic pollutants.

Abstract:Sulfide-modified nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) has aroused increasing interest due to its excellent ability towards environmental decontamination. Heterogeneous catalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-H) mediated by iron-based materials has been explored by previous researches. Yet, unknown role and degradation mechanism of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-H) through S-nZVI driven peroxymonosulfate (PMS) need to be further investigated. In current research, the impacts of S-nZVI dosage, PMS dosage, initial pH, anions and humic acids were independently explored during TC-H degradation process. S-nZVI exhibited the high efficiency for activating PMS. TC-H degradation followed a pseudo-first order kinetics reaction with kobs at 0.1403 min−1. HA, Cl−, HPO4 2−, NO3 − exhibited varied reduction of the reaction rates on TC-H removal. Besides, SO4 •− and •OH were dedicated to degrading TC-H, and SO4 •− was proved to be predominant one. The alteration of sulfide species from XPS analysis played a pivotal role in raising the electron transfer rate to improve TC-H degradation. Ten intermediates products were determined through HRMS and primary transformation mechanism involved in N-demethylation reaction, demethylation reaction, elimination reaction and hydrogenation reaction were proposed. Based on metabolomics analysis, up-regulated expression of carbohydrate metabolism, citrate cycle, CoA biosynthesis, fatty acid degradation and amino acid synthesis in Escherichia coli were significantly induced by the further products, whereas glutathione metabolism was significantly down-regulated, endorsing that potential toxicity induced by intermediates were weakened. To sum up, S-nZVI/PMS as a promising nano-water environmental remediation method could be feasible for emerging environment organic pollutants control.

Abstract:Nano-zero valent iron (nZVI) was anchored and dispersed on the surface of acid-modified blast furnace slag (mBFS) through the liquid phase reduction method. The synthesized nZVI@mBFS composite exhibited remarkable ability to degrade phenol when used in conjunction with persulfate (PDS), 97.8% phenol could be eliminated in 30 min. All the anions like SO42-, HCO3-, H2PO4-, and CO32- were detrimental to the phenol degradation in nZVI@mBFS system. Moreover, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and radical scavenging tests confirmed that SO4 center dot- , center dot OH and center dot O-2(-) were the principal reactive oxygen species (ROSs) generated during the reaction process. The potential degradation pathways were also deduced based on the results obtained from gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analysis. Collectively, this study holds substantial significance in regards to recycling industrial solid wastes, devising efficient persulfate-activated materials, and treating wastewater.

Abstract:Under the action of different activators, persulfate can produce sulfate radicals (SO4·–) with strong oxidizing ability, which can destruct many organic compounds. Meanwhile, persulfate is widely used in groundwater and soil remediation because of its fast reaction and wide application. With the high specific surface area and reactivity of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), it can enhance the degradation efficiency of the persulfate system on organic pollutants in soil and water as a persulfate activator. However, nZVI is easy to get oxidized and has a tendency to aggregation. To solve these problems, a variety of nZVI modification methods have been put forward and put into to applications in the activation of persulfate. This article will give a systematic introduction of the background and problems of nZVI-activated persulfate in the remediation of organic pollution. In addition, the modification methods and mechanisms of nZVI are summarized, and the applications and progress of modified nZVI-activated persulfate are reviewed. The factors that affect the removal of organic compounds by the activation system are discussed as well. Worldwide, the field studies and full-scale remediation using modified nZVI in persulfate activation are yet limited. However, the already known cases reveal the good prospect of applying modified nZVI in persulfate activation to organic pollution remediation.

Abstract:Sulfidation treatment has been considered as an effective method to improve the activity of zero valent iron (ZVI) for reductive removal of contaminants. However, the role and mechanism of sulfide-modified zero valent iron (S-ZVI) in advanced oxidation reaction were worth further exploration. In this study, influences of different reaction conditions, including initial pH, iron dosage, persulfate (PDS) dosage and inorganic ions on sulfadiazine (SDZ) removal by mechanical ball-milling sulfidated microscale zero valent iron (S-ZVIbm)/PDS process and mechanical ball-milling microscale zero valent iron (ZVIbm)/PDS were comparatively investigated. By contrastive analyses, S-ZVIbm exhibited more excellent performance on activation of PDS. Meanwhile, SO42−, Cl−, and NO3− showed different effects on SDZ degradation by ZVIbm/PDS and S-ZVIbm/PDS. The potential mechanisms that S-ZVIbm exceeding ZVIbm in activating PDS were clarified from two aspects, which were better iron dissolution and iron circulation caused by iron sulfides generated during sulfidation treatment. Besides, chemical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies identified that both <math>SO4·-</math> and OH were generated in ZVIbm/PDS and S-ZVIbm/PDS, and <math>SO4·-</math> was the dominant one. Two different degradation pathways of SDZ in the S-ZVIbm/PDS process were proposed based on the experimental intermediates identification and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. According to the results obtained in this study, the S-ZVIbm/PDS process was recommended as an effective method to degrade contaminants.

Abstract:Nano zero-valent iron activated persulfate (nZVI/PS) advanced oxidation technology is a novel approach with advantages in treating high-concentration and refractory organic pollutants. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the research progress on nZVI/PS technology for the degradation of organic pollutants in recent years. This paper comprehensively introduces the activation methods of persulfate, the basic principles, and reaction mechanisms of nZVI/PS technology, as well as the degradation of pollutants using supported nano zero-valent iron activated persulfate. The paper discusses the mechanisms and degradation effects of different types of supported nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) activated persulfate (PS) technology for the degradation of organic pollutants under various conditions. The composite material formed by loading nZVI onto a solid support material is beneficial for improving nZVI dispersibility, stability, and reactivity. The synergistic effect of the carrier and nZVI in the composite material significantly improves the removal efficiency of organic pollutants. Furthermore, the paper discusses in detail the degradation efficiency of this technology under different conditions for various types of organic pollutants, including trichloroethylene, phenol, pyrene, and Ciprofloxacin. The PS/nZVI process can remove the majority of organic pollutants within 60 minutes. Organic pollutant molecules in the solution are degraded into small intermediate products such as organic acids and simple compounds, ultimately transforming into CO2 and H2O. The paper identifies the challenges of nZVI/PS technology in engineering applications and proposes future research directions to further promote the application of this technology in organic pollutant treatment. This review is a valuable reference for further research and application of nZVI/PS technology in the field of organic pollutant control.

Abstract:Commercial nanosized zero-valent copper (nZVC) was used as persulfate (PS) activator in combination with ultrasonic irradiation (US) for the oxidative degradation of typical antibiotic sulfamethazine (SMZ) in this study. Compared with other processes, the combined nZVC-PS-US process significantly enhanced SMZ removal due to a synergistic interaction between sonolysis and a heterogeneous reaction. Almost complete SMZ removal was achieved within 60 min using a PS dose of 0.5 mM and a nZVC concentration of 64 mg/L at pH 3.06, with US at 0.4 W/mL and 40 kHz. The presence of NO3-, SO42-, HCO3-, Cl- and humic acid demonstrated adverse effects on SMZ degradation. Moreover, the inhibitory effect of different inorganic anions on SMZ degradation followed the sequence of HCO3- > SO42- > NO3- > Cl- > no salt. Electron spin resonance and radical scavenging tests indicate that the primary reactive species was SO4 center dot-, while center dot OH played a less important role. Cu+ is an active copper species in activating PS. The production of Cu+ and Cu2+ induced by Cu-0 and US favored the continuous decomposition of PS as well as the production of SO4 center dot- at the surface of nZVC. Nine intermediates were identified and four oxidation pathways were proposed, the aniline moiety oxidation, SO2 extrusion/smile-type rearrangement and S-N bond cleavage were the major pathways. Practicality and effectiveness of nZVC-PS-US was confirmed when other organic micro-pollutants and SMZ added to raw waters were tested. The findings reported here offer promising implications in developing the utilization of nZVC in advanced oxidation for treatment of wastewater.
Efficient degradation of Nizatidine by a Fe(II)/ persulfate system actived with Zero-valent iron

Abstract:In this study, the degradation of nizatidine (NZTD) was investigated using a zero-valent iron-promoted divalent iron-activated persulfate process. Results show that complete NZTD degradation at 5 mg/L could be achieved under the optimal conditions of NZTD/zero-valent iron (ZVI)/Fe(II)/persulfate (PS) = 1:6:3:6 (molar ratio), pH = 7.0, and 25 °C. A highly alkaline environment would decrease the NZTD removal, and the NZTD degradation increased with the reaction temperature (5 °C–35 °C). Furthermore, acidic conditions and the presence of Cl - enhanced the degradation of NZTD, but the presence of high doses of HCO 3 - , NO 3 - , and humic acid inhibited the degradation of NZTD. The fragile sites in NZTD were predicted by density functional theory (DFT) methods, and six transformation products were detected during the degradation of NZTD by PS/Fe(II)/ZVI. The toxicity of the intermediates was examined using the TEST toxicity prediction model and luminescent bacteria. The degradation process generated intermediates with higher toxicity than NZTD. However, after 60 min of reaction, the inhibition rate of luminescent bacteria decreased rapidly, and low toxicity products were generated. These results suggest that ZVI/Fe(II)/PS is promising as a new alternative process for the treatment of water containing NZTD. Abstract:Agglomeration and passivation restrict the using zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI). Enhancing the reactivity of nZVI is often accomplished by sulfurization. In this work, nZVI was sulfurized using SRB to produce biosulfurized nano zero-valent iron (BP–S-nZVI), which was then utilized as a catalyst to investigating its performance in an advanced oxidation process based on activated peroxomonosulfate (PMS). When the S/Fe was 0.05, 0.4 g/L of catalyst and 0.5 mM PMS were added to a 20 mg/L ciprofloxacin solution. In 120 min, a 90.4% clearance rate was reached. When the initial pH of the solution was within the range of 3–11, all exhibited acceptable degradation performance and were minimally affected by co-existing anions. In this activation system, hydroxyl, superoxide and sulfate radicals (•OH, O 2 •− and SO 4 •− , respectively) have been proven to be the main active species. Seven intermediates in the degradation process of CIP were identified by LC-MS analysis and two possible degradation pathways were proposed. In addition, the degradation rate of CIP was still able to reach 87.0% after five cycles, and the removal rate remained unchanged in the CIP solution with actual water samples as background. This study demonstrated that BP-S-nZVI as a catalyst for the activation of PMS for CIP degradation can still show good reactivity, which provides more possibilities for the practical application of BP-S-nZVI in the degradation of pollutants.

Abstract:Chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHCs) are often used in industrial processes, and they have been found in groundwater with increasing frequency in recent years. Several typical CHCs, including trichloroethylene (TCE), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), carbon tetrachloride (CT), etc., have strong cytotoxicity and carcinogenicity, posing a serious threat to human health and ecological environment. Advanced persulfate (PS) oxidation technology based on nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has become a research hotspot for CHCs degradation in recent years. However, nZVI is easily oxidized to form the surface passivation layer and prone to aggregation in practical application, which significantly reduces the activation efficiency of PS. In order to solve this problem, various nZVI modification solutions have been proposed. This review systematically summarizes four commonly used modification methods of nZVI, and the theoretical mechanisms of PS activated by primitive and modified nZVI. Besides, the influencing factors in the engineering application process are discussed. In addition, the controversial views on which of the two (SO4·- and ·OH) is dominant in the nZVI/PS system are summarized. Generally, SO4·- predominates in acidic conditions while ·OH prefers neutral and alkaline environments. Finally, challenges and prospects for practical application of CHCs removal by nZVI-based materials activating PS are also analyzed.

Abstract:In recent years, a serious threat of antibiotic residues in aquatic environments to human health and ecological security has become increasingly widespread attention. In this study, this is the first report on an alternative strategy on enhanced degradation of amoxicillin (AMX) and norfloxacin (NOF) by TiO2@nZVI/persulfate (PS) process under UV irradiation. Results revealed that a signficantly synergistic effect on AMX degradation had been achieved in TiO2@nZVI/PS/UV process due to the photocatalysis and Fenton-like reactions. NO3–, HCO3–, PO43- and humic acid exhibited inhibitory effects on AMX degradation, whereas Cl- was negligible on that. The degradation of AMX decreased as the addition of Cr(VI) concentrations increased, whereas the correspond values were enhanced when a low Cu(II) concentration was introduced. TiO2@nZVI/PS/UV process was the most efficient for activating PS decomposition. HO•, SO4•− and 1O2 were all generated in TiO2@nZVI/PS/UV process, but HO• and SO4•− were the dominant radical species for AMX degradation. The AMX intermediates products identified by LC-MS system confirmed AMX was effectively degraded through hydroxylation and deamination reactions. A better performance on the simultaneous removals of AMX and NOF by TiO2@nZVI/PS/UV process could be achieved at lower concentration conditions, and the simultaneous reaction mechanism was thereby proposed base on expriment results.

Abstract:The sulfate radicals (SO4•−)-based advanced oxidation process is an efficient way to degrade stubborn pollutants. However, the degradation products of 2,4-dinitrotoluene and the effects of different natural water matrices on 2,4-dinitrotoluene degradation by persulfate/Fe2+ are largely unknown. In this study, the degradation kinetics of 2,4-dinitrotoluene by persulfate/Fe2+ were investigated in different water matrices. The degradation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene can be divided into rapid-slow reaction stages, which was suitably described by the pseudo-first-order kinetics model (R2 > 0.95). The concentrations of persulfate and Fe2+ had a significant effect on 2,4-dinitrotoluene degradation, and a molar ratio of persulfate/Fe2+ of < 5:1 is favorable for 2,4-dinitrotoluene degradation. Based on the intermediate products, degradation pathways of 2,4-dinitrotoluene, such as hydroxylation/oxidation and removal of the nitro group from the benzene ring, were proposed. The presence of HCO3−, CO32−, and NO3− inhibited the degradation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene by persulfate/Fe2+. In natural aquatic environments with low Cl− concentrations, the persulfate/Fe2+ oxidation process demonstrated superior efficiency in degrading 2,4-dinitrotoluene. The present results will provide vital information for successfully cleaning up 2,4-dinitrotoluene from the aquatic environment using SO4•−-based advanced oxidation process.
