Abstract:Abstract Extreme surface ocean waves are often primary drivers of coastal flooding and erosion over various time scales. Hence, understanding future changes in extreme wave events owing to global warming is of socio-economic and environmental significance. However, our current knowledge of potential changes in high-frequency (defined here as having return periods of less than 1 year) extreme wave events are largely unknown, despite being strongly linked to coastal hazards across time scales relevant to coastal management. Here, we present global climate-modeling evidence, based on the most comprehensive multi-method, multi-model wave ensemble, of projected changes in a core set of extreme wave indices describing high-frequency, extra-tropical storm-driven waves. We find changes in high-frequency extreme wave events of up to ∼50%–100% under RCP8.5 high-emission scenario; which is nearly double the expected changes for RCP4.5 scenario, when globally integrated. The projected changes exhibit strong inter-hemispheric asymmetry, with strong increases in extreme wave activity across the tropics and high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere region, and a widespread decrease across most of the Northern Hemisphere. We find that the patterns of projected increase across these extreme wave events over the Southern Hemisphere region resemble their historical response to the positive anomaly of the Southern Annular Mode. Our findings highlight that many countries with low-adaptive capacity are likely to face increasing exposure to much more frequent extreme wave events in the future.

Abstract:Ocean surface waves can be major hazards in coastal and offshore activities. However, there exists very limited information on ocean wave behavior in response to climate change, because such information is not simulated in current global climate models. This study made statistical projections of changes in ocean wave heights using sea level pressure (SLP) information from 20 CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5) global climate models for the 21st century. The results show significant wave height increases in the tropics (especially in the eastern tropical Pacific) and in Southern Hemisphere high latitudes (south of 45°S). Under the projected 2070–2099 climate condition of the rising high concentration pathway—the RCP8.5 scenario, the occurrence frequency of the present‐day one in 10 year extreme wave heights is likely to double or triple in several coastal regions around the world. These wave height increases are primarily driven by increased SLP gradients and hence increased surface wind energy. Abstract:Ocean winds blowing harder Two frequently asked questions about how climate warming will affect the environment are whether windiness might change and what effects that might have on ocean waves. Young and Ribal analyzed global satellite data over the period from 1985 to 2018 to determine if there are any trends in oceanic wind speed and wave height. They found small increases in both quantities, with the strongest increases in extreme conditions and in the Southern Ocean. These findings are important for understanding air-sea exchange of energy and carbon dioxide and for projecting sea levels during storms. Science , this issue p. 548

Abstract:Extreme winds and waves threaten human life, property security, infrastructure, and marine engineering. Persistent extreme wind events (EWiEs) and extreme wave events (EWaEs) can cause more significant impacts and destruction than short-term or instantaneous extreme events. This study defines an EWiE (EWaE) as a prolonged discrete event characterized by abnormally high wind speeds (significant wave heights). The climatological characteristics, spatiotemporal variability, and long-term trends of EWaEs and EWiEs globally are studied utilizing ERA5 reanalysis datasets from 1940 to 2021. The climatological mean characteristics of EWiEs and EWaEs are generally similar: extratropical regions exhibit high intensities, high counts, and short durations, whereas tropical regions are characterized by weak intensities, low counts, and long durations. The count and duration of EWaEs have significantly increased globally, with the greatest rate in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, where the count of events has increased by more than 2.1/decade and the duration by more than 7.2 h/decade. Furthermore, the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) exhibits a significant positive correlation with the count and duration of EWaEs in the eastern Pacific and Southern Oceans. In the Southern Hemisphere at 0–30°S, the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) shows a significant positive correlation with the count of EWaEs and EWiEs.

Abstract:Abstract An improved understanding of the present and future marine climatology is necessary for numerous activities, such as the operation of offshore structures, optimization of ship routes, and evaluation of wave energy resources. To produce global wave information, the WAVEWATCH III wave model was forced with wind and ice-cover data from an RCP8.5 EC-Earth system integration for two 30-year time slices. The first covering the periods from 1980 to 2009 represents the present climate, and the second, covering the periods from 2070 to 2099, represents the climate at the end of the twenty-first century. Descriptive empirical statistics of wind and wave parameters are obtained for different 30-year time slices, for the North Atlantic Ocean. Regarding wind, magnitude and direction will be used. For wave, significant wave height of the total sea, mean wave period, peak period, mean wave direction, and energy will be investigated. Changes from present to future climate are evaluated, regarding both mean and extreme events. Maps of these empirical statistics are presented. The long-term monthly joint distribution of significant wave heights and peak periods is generated. Changes from present to future climate are assessed, comparing the empirical statistics between time slices.

Abstract:Global warming is expected to have far‐reaching impacts on the frequency and intensity of extreme events, but the effects of anthropogenic warming on the emergence seasons of year‐maximum near‐surface wind speed (NSWS) remain poorly understood. We provide a comprehensive map of the changing emergence seasons of year‐maximum NSWS using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 projections. Our analysis reveals a rapid response of synoptic‐scale extreme NSWS to global warming, with consistent spatial patterns observed across various periods and warming scenarios. The most significant increase (∼16%) in the emergence season is projected to occur in December‐January‐February (DJF) over Mid‐high‐latitude Asia by the end of the 21st century. The study also anticipates changes in the emergence seasons of year‐maximum NSWS at a regional scale. These results deepen our understanding of the complex and interconnected nature of global climate change and underscore the need for concerted efforts in addressing this pressing challenge.

Abstract:Compound wind and precipitation extremes (CWPEs) can severely impact natural and socioeconomic systems. However, our understanding of CWPE future changes, drivers, and uncertainties under a warmer climate is limited. Here, by analyzing the event both on oceans and landmasses via state‐of‐the‐art climate model simulations, we reveal a poleward shift of CWPE occurrences by the late 21st century, with notable increases at latitudes exceeding 50° in both hemispheres and decreases in the subtropics around 25°. CWPE intensification occurs across approximately 90% of global landmasses, and is most pronounced under a high‐emission scenario. Most changes in CWPE frequency and intensity (about 70% and 80%, respectively) stem from changes in precipitation extremes. We further identify large uncertainties in CWPE changes, which can be understood at the regional level by considering climate model differences in trends of CWPE drivers. These results provide insights into understanding CWPE changes under a warmer climate, aiding robust regional adaptation strategy development.

Abstract:Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are extreme climatic events in oceanic systems that can have devastating impacts on ecosystems, causing abrupt ecological changes and socioeconomic consequences. Several prominent MHWs have attracted scientific and public interest, and recent assessments have documented global and regional increases in their frequency. However, for proactive marine management, it is critical to understand how patterns might change in the future. Here, we estimate future changes in MHWs to the end of the 21st century, as simulated by the CMIP5 global climate model projections. Significant increases in MHW intensity and count of annual MHW days are projected to accelerate, with many parts of the ocean reaching a near-permanent MHW state by the late 21st century. The two greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenarios considered (Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 and 8.5) strongly affect the projected intensity of MHW events, the proportion of the globe exposed to permanent MHW states, and the occurrence of the most extreme MHW events. Comparison with simulations of a natural world, without anthropogenic forcing, indicate that these trends have emerged from the expected range of natural variability within the first half of the 21st century. This discrepancy implies a degree of "anthropogenic emergence," with a departure from the natural MHW conditions that have previously shaped marine ecosystems for centuries or even millennia. Based on these projections we expect impacts on marine ecosystems to be widespread, significant and persistent through the 21st century.

A High-Resolution Future Wave Climate Projection for the Coastal Northwestern Atlantic

Abstract:A high-resolution wave climate projection for the northwestern Atlantic Ocean has been conducted to help assess possible regional impacts due to global climate change. The spectral wave model NOAA WAVEWATCH III is utilized with three coupled (two-way) grids to resolve the northwestern Atlantic and coastal southern and eastern USA at approximately 21 km and 7 km respectively, and covers the periods 1979--2003 (historic) and 2075--2099 (future). Hourly wind field forcings are provided by a high-resolution AGCM (MRI-AGCM 3.2S; 21 km) and allow for better modeling of large storm events (important for extreme event statistics). Climatological (25-year) comparisons between future and historical periods indicate significant wave heights will decrease in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean (-5.7 %) and Gulf of Mexico (-4.7 %) but increase in the Caribbean Sea (2.4 %). Comparisons also indicate that large changes in mean wave direction will occur in the Gulf of Mexico (5.0°), with the largest occurring west of the Florida peninsula (over 15°).

Abstract:<p>Compound events of weather extremes considerably affect various sectors of human society and natural environment and therefore it is essential to understand projected changes of their characteristics in the future climate. We focus on the combination of low temperature and high wind velocity, because their compound effect strongly influences human thermal comfort in cold weather, as characterized by the wind chill factor. In our study, we analyse frequency of this extreme events and projected changes of their characteristics in simulations of RCMs from the EURO-CORDEX project. We investigate a set of 9 simulations of 3 different RCMs driven by 3 different global climate models which allow us to analyse the influence of driving data on the RCM&#8217;s outputs. We focus on the Central European domain defined between 48&#8211;52&#176;N and 10&#8211;19&#176;E. The frequency of the compound events from historical simulations over 1970-2100 are compared to the projected frequencies under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios for the end of the 21st century (2070-2100). Since local climate is relatively tightly linked to a large-scale atmospheric circulation over Europe in winter, we also evaluate links of the compound events to the atmospheric circulation.</p>
Ensemble Bayesian Model Averaging Projections of Wind‐Speed Extremes for Wind Energy Applications Over China Under Climate Change

Abstract:Abstract Wind energy has grown rapidly in recent years as a measure to control carbon emissions and mitigate climate change. Extreme wind can damage wind turbines, cause losses to wind power plants, limit economic benefits of wind energy facilities, and disrupt regional grid balance. Therefore, an accurate assessment of extreme wind speeds at wind turbine hub height and their spatiotemporal variation under climate change is critical for the planning of wind energy and for guaranteeing regional energy security. In this study, the 100‐m extreme wind speeds in China are estimated using an empirical downscaling and Bayesian model averaging ensemble method with the latest ERA5 reanalysis and 20 global climate models (GCMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6). Two shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP), that is, SSP2‐4.5 and SSP5‐8.5, are considered to account for the uncertainty in anthropogenic emissions. According to the results, the highest extreme wind speeds are primarily found in Inner Mongolia, northeast China, western Tibet, and the eastern coastal region. Extreme wind speeds in central and southeastern China are projected to increase by approximately 2% in the middle (2031–2060) and the end (2071–2100) of the 21st century relative to the baseline period (1985–2014). Summer extreme wind speeds in northwestern Tibet are expected to increase by more than 9% at the end of the century. The findings of this study indicate that it is important to take the present and projected changes in local wind extremes into account when choosing locations for wind power plants and wind energy installations.

Abstract:Future changes to the year-to-year swings between active and inactive North Atlantic tropical cyclone (TC) seasons have received little attention, yet may have great societal implications in areas prone to hurricane landfalls. This work investigates past and future changes in North Atlantic TC activity, focusing on interannual variability and evaluating the contributions from anthropogenic forcing. We show that interannual variability of Atlantic TC activity has already increased, evidenced by an increase in the occurrence of both extremely active and inactive TC seasons. TC-resolving general circulation models project a 36% increase in the variance of North Atlantic TC activity, measured by accumulated cyclone energy, by the middle of the 21st century. These changes are the result of increased variability in vertical wind shear and atmospheric stability, in response to enhanced Pacific-to-Atlantic interbasin sea surface temperature variations. Robust anthropogenic-forced intensification in the variability of Atlantic TC activity will continue in the future, with important implications for emergency planning and societal preparedness.

Abstract:Extreme windstorms pose a significant hazard to infrastructure and public safety, particularly in the highly populated US Northeast (NE). However, the influence climate change and changing land use will have on these events remains unclear. A large ensemble generated using the Max-Planck Institute (MPI) Earth System Model is used to generate projections of NE windstorms under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) and to attribute changes to projected land use land cover (LULC) change, externally forced changes and internal climate variability. To reduce the influence of coarse grid cell resolution and uncertainties in surface roughness lengths, windstorms are identified using simultaneous widespread exceedance of local 99th percentile 10-meter wind speeds (U99). Projected declines in forest cover in the NE and the resulting reductions in surface roughness length under SSP3-7.0 lead to projections of large increases in U99 and derived windstorm intensity and scale. However, these projected changes in regional LULC under SSP3-7.0 are unprecedented in a historical context and may not be realistic. After corrections are applied to remove the influence of LULC on wind speeds, regionally averaged U99 exhibit declines for most of the single model initial-condition large ensemble (SMILE) members which are broadly proportional to the radiative forcing and global air temperature increase in the SSPs, with a median value of -0.15 ms-1°C-1. While weak cyclones are projected to decline in frequency in the NE, intense cyclones and the resulting windstorms and indices of socioeconomic loss do not. Where present, significant trends in these loss indices are positive, and some MPI SMILE members generate future windstorms that are unprecedented in the historical period.

Quantifying Changes in Extreme Weather Events in Response to Warmer Global Temperature

Abstract:Global warming is expected to affect both the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, though projections of the response of these events to climate warming remain highly uncertain. The range of changes reported in the climate modelling literature is very large, sometimes leading to contradictory results for a given extreme weather event. Much of this uncertainty stems from the incomplete understanding of the physics of extreme weather processes, the lack of representation of mesoscale processes in coarse-resolution climate models, and the effect of natural climate variability at multi-decadal time scales. However, some of the spread in results originates simply from the variety of scenarios for future climate change used to drive climate model simulations, which hampers the ability to make generalizations about predicted changes in extreme weather events. In this study, we present a meta-analysis of the literature on projected future extreme weather events in order to quantify expected changes in weather extremes as a function of a common metric of global mean temperature increases. We find that many extreme weather events are likely to be significantly affected by global warming. In particular, our analysis indicates that the overall frequency of global tropical cyclones could decrease with global warming but that the intensity of these storms, as well as the frequency of the most intense cyclones could increase, particularly in the northwestern Pacific basin. We also found increases in the intensity of South Asian monsoonal rainfall, the frequency of global heavy precipitation events, the number of North American severe thunderstorm days, North American drought conditions, and European heatwaves, with rising global mean temperatures. In addition, the periodicity of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation may decrease, which could, in itself, influence extreme weather frequency in many areas of the climate system.

Abstract:To assess the influence of climate change on the estimates of extreme wind speeds induced by typhoons, the present study employs a Monte Carlo simulation approach to forecast the extreme wind speeds in the proximity of Hong Kong when the sea surface temperatures rise as projected by various climate change models according to the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5. In addition, the present study shows the first attempt to quantitatively assess the uncertainty buried in the prediction of the extreme wind speed in association with typhoons taking the rise in sea surface temperatures, and therefore climate change, into consideration. It is found that climate change leads, with high confidence, to the increase in extreme wind speeds brought about by typhoons. From the numerical simulation, it is found that the mean wind speeds associated with typhoons impacting Hong Kong rise from 10.8 m/s (1961–1990) to 12.4 m/s (2051–2080), and the extreme wind speed is 47.5 m/s during 2051–2080 under the RCP 8.5 climate scenario, which is 21.2% higher than that corresponding to the period of 1961–1990. As for the quantification of uncertainties in the extreme wind estimates, the inter-quartile ranges for the sea surface temperatures projected by various climate models in July and October are 9.5% and 8.2% in 2050, respectively, and go up to 9.6% and 9.9% in 2080. The extreme wind speeds with 50 years return period show inter-quartile ranges of 14.2% in 2050, and the value decreases to 12.8% in 2080.
Resolution-Dependence of Extreme Wind Speed Projections in the Great Lakes Region

Abstract:The effect of anthropogenic climate change on extreme near-surface wind speeds is uncertain. Observed trends are weak and difficult to disentangle from internal variability, and model projections disagree on the sign and magnitude of trends. Standard coarse-resolution climate models represent fine structures of relevant physical phenomena such as extratropical cyclones (ETCs), upper-level jet streaks, surface energy fluxes, and land surface variability less skillfully than their high-resolution counterparts. Here we use simulations with the NCAR Community Earth System Model with both uniform (110 km) resolution and the variable resolution configuration (VR-CESM-SONT, 110 km to 7 km), to study the effect of refined spatial resolution on projections of extreme strong and weak wind speeds in the Great Lakes region under end-of-century RCP8.5 forcing. The variable-resolution configuration projects strengthening of strong-wind events in the refined region with the opposite occurring in the uniform-resolution simulation. The two configurations provide consistent changes to synoptic scale circulations associated with high-wind events. However, only the variable resolution configuration projects weaker static stability, enhanced turbulent vertical mixing, and consequentially enhanced surface wind speeds, because boundary layer dynamics are better captured in the refined region. Both models project increased frequency of extreme weak winds, though only VR-CESM-SONT resolves the cold-season inversions and summertime high temperatures associated with stagnant wind events. The identifiable mechanism of the changes to strong winds in VR-CESM-SONT provides confidence in its projections and demonstrates the value of enhanced spatial resolution for the study of extreme winds under climate change.

Abstract:It is summarized the projections of typhoon changes over the western North Pacific Ocean for the 21st century in the recent years.Multi-model ensembles with the various human emission scenarios indicate that the total numbers of the annual typhoons simulated over the western North Pacific Ocean might decrease by the end of the 21st century.But the numbers of the strong typhoons simulated and the intensities of their wind speed and precipitation might increase at the same time.It must be emphasized that the long-term projection of the typhoons is a very difficult issue,the further studies will be conducted in future to narrow the gaps and uncertainties.The mechanisms and feedbacks between the human activities and typhoon changes should be investigated in detail.

Abstract:The potential for changes in extreme precipitation events due to anthropogenic climate change may have significant societal impacts (e.g., agricultural productivity, property loss, mortality). This project uses a dynamically downscaled, convection-permitting regional climate model to investigate extreme daily precipitation in the CONUS, defined explicitly as the 99th percentile 24-h accumulated value. The simulation output includes a historical baseline (HIST; 1990–2005) and two epochs at the end of the twenty-first century (EOC; 2085–2100) under intermediate and pessimistic emissions scenarios. Independent observations illustrate that HIST admirably represents extreme precipitation climatology for most locations in the domain. Comparisons between HIST and the two EOC scenarios for the 99th percentile of daily precipitation show statistically significant increases during Dec–May across the Midwest and Ohio Valley and statistically significant decreases for the southern Great Plains during Dec–Feb. Extreme value analysis further reveals increasing variability in precipitation extremes for eight climatologically unique cities across the CONUS by the end of the twenty-first century and significant increases in return period precipitation amounts for most cities examined. These results provide additional guidance for stakeholders to reduce societal impacts and economic loss from daily precipitation extremes and create a more climate-resilient society.

The risk of concurrent heatwaves and extreme sea levels along the global coastline is increasing

Abstract:Abstract Concurrent heatwaves and extreme sea levels could pose a serious threat to coastal communities under climate change; however, the spatiotemporal characteristics and dynamic evolution of them along global coastline remain poorly understood. Here, we use reanalysis datasets and model projections to assess historical and future changes in global concurrent heatwaves and extreme sea levels. We find that 87.73% of coastlines experienced such concurrent extremes during 1979–2017. There is an average increase of 3.72 days in the occurrence during 1998–2017 compared to 1979–1998. A one-percentile increase in heatwave intensity is associated with a 2.07% increase in the likelihood of concurrent extremes. Global coastlines are projected to experience 38 days of concurrent extremes each year during 2025–2049 under the highest emission scenario. The weakening of geopotential height associated with a surface low-pressure system may serve as an important indicator for the occurrence of extreme sea levels during heatwaves.

Abstract:In the Northwest Pacific (NWP), where a unique monsoon climate exists and where both typhoons and extratropical storms occur frequently, hazardous waves pose a significant risk to maritime safety. To analyze the 20-year variability of hazardous waves in this region, this study utilized hourly reanalysis data from the ECMWF ERA5 dataset covering the period from 2001–2020, alongside the wave risk assessment method. The ERA5 data exhibits better consistency, in both the temporal and spatial dimensions, than satellite data. Although hazardous wind seas occur more frequently than hazardous swells, swells make hazardous waves travel further. Notably, the extreme wave height (EWH) shows an increasing trend in high- and low-latitude areas of the NWP. The change in meridional wind speeds is the primary reason for the change in the total wind speed in the NWP. Notably, the maximum annual increase rate of 0.013 m/year for EWH exists in the region of the Japanese Archipelago. This study elucidated the distributions of wave height intensity and wave risk levels, noting that the EWHs of the 50-year and 100-year return periods can reach 20.92 m and 23.07 m, respectively.
