Abstract:A hydrophobic CO 2 physisorbent Most materials for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture of fossil fuel combustion, such as amines, rely on strong chemisorption interactions that are highly selective but can incur a large energy penalty to release CO 2 . Lin et al . show that a zinc-based metal organic framework material can physisorb CO 2 and incurs a lower regeneration penalty. Its binding site at the center of the pores precludes the formation of hydrogen-bonding networks between water molecules. This durable material can preferentially adsorb CO2 at 40% relative humidity and maintains its performance under flue gas conditions of 150°C. —PDS

Abstract:Abstract Efficient and sustainable methods for carbon dioxide capture are highly sought after. Mature technologies involve chemical reactions that absorb CO 2, but they have many drawbacks. Energy-efficient alternatives may be realised by porous physisorbents with void spaces that are complementary in size and electrostatic potential to molecular CO 2 . Here, we present a robust, recyclable and inexpensive adsorbent termed MUF-16. This metal-organic framework captures CO 2 with a high affinity in its one-dimensional channels, as determined by adsorption isotherms, X-ray crystallography and density-functional theory calculations. Its low affinity for other competing gases delivers high selectivity for the adsorption of CO 2 over methane, acetylene, ethylene, ethane, propylene and propane. For equimolar mixtures of CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /C 2 H 2 , the selectivity is 6690 and 510, respectively. Breakthrough gas separations under dynamic conditions benefit from short time lags in the elution of the weakly-adsorbed component to deliver high-purity hydrocarbon products, including pure methane and acetylene.

Abstract:The rising levels of CO2 are unavoidably connected to climate change and its consequences on atmospheric temperatures throughout the world. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a dependable and practical method for capturing carbon emissions from industry. This article introduces the realms of direct air capture, post-combustion carbon capture, and pre-combustion carbon capture. Furthermore, the paper delves into the fascinating world of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials with a high porosity, tunable structures, and exceptional adsorption capacities that can effectively absorb substantial quantities of CO2, qualifying them as promising candidates for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The synthesis methods and performance evaluation of MOF materials concerning carbon capture were introduced. Some of the challenges associated with MOFs are also discussed, including their reduced stability at high temperatures and sensitivity to moisture. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of carbon capture technologies, highlighting the potential of MOFs while addressing current challenges and opportunities in the field.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent one of the most promising porous solids for possible use as sorbents to control and reduce the greenhouse gas emission. Studies have shown that open metal sites (OMS) interact strongly with carbon dioxide and thus, serve as efficient binding sites for CO2 capture. However, many OMS-bearing MOFs are lack of framework stability and often have high regeneration temperature. To seek ways to solve the stability issue, we designed a series of isoreticular MOFs, Zr-tcpb-COOM (M = alkali/alkaline earth metal), by exchange of metal ions with protons on Zr-tcpb-COOH via post-synthetic modifications (PSM). The pristine MOF (Zr-tcpb-COOH) has a very robust framework. The PSM process does not deteriorate the framework stability but creates metal binding sites that form strong bonds with carbon dioxide. The results show that at low CO2 pressure, the uptake amount is enhanced considerably using Zr-tcpb-COOM and is in trend of increasing atomic number (Li+ < Na+ < K+ < Ca2+). High adsorption selectivity (CO2/N2 IAST selectivity (15:85) = 539.5) is also achieved for CO2 over N2 at room temperature. This approach offers a feasible method to improve CO2 capture capacity, especially at low concentrations.

Abstract:Considering the rapid increase of CO2 emission, especially from power plants, there is a constant need for materials which can effectively eliminate post-combustion CO2 (the main component: CO2/N2 = 15/85). Here, we show the design and synthesis of a Cu(II) metal-organic framework (FJI-H14) with a high density of active sites, which displays unusual acid and base stability and high volumetric uptake (171 cm3 cm−3) of CO2 under ambient conditions (298 K, 1 atm), making it a potential adsorbing agent for post-combustion CO2. Moreover, CO2 from simulated post-combustion flue gas can be smoothly converted into corresponding cyclic carbonates by the FJI-H14 catalyst. Such high CO2 adsorption capacity and moderate catalytic activity may result from the synergistic effect of multiple active sites.

Abstract:Despite the known impacts on climate change of carbon dioxide emissions, the continued use of fossil fuels for energy generation leading to the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere is evident. Therefore, innovation to address and reduce CO2 emissions from industrial operations remains an urgent and crucial priority. A viable strategy in the area is postcombustion capture mainly through absorption by aqueous alkanolamines, which focuses on the separation of CO2 from flue gas, despite its limitations. Within this context, porous materials, particularly metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have arisen as favorable alternatives owing to their significant adsorption capacity, selectivity, and reduced regeneration energy demands. This research evaluates the engineering insights into tailored MOFs for enhanced CO2 capture, focusing on three series of MOFs (ZIF, UiO-66, and BTC) to investigate the effects of organic ligands, functional groups, and metal ions. The evaluation encompassed a range of aspects including adsorption isotherms of pure gases [CO2 and nitrogen (N2)] and mixed gas mixture (CO2 and N2 with 15:85% ratio), along with utilization of the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) to simulate multicomponent gas adsorption isotherms. Moreover, the reliability of IAST for mixed gas adsorption prediction has been investigated in detail. The research offers valuable insights into the correlation between the characteristics of MOFs and their effectiveness in gas separation and how these characteristics contribute to the differences between IAST predictions and experimental results. The findings enhance the understanding of how to enhance MOF characteristics in order to reduce CO2 emissions and also highlight the need for advanced models that consider thermodynamic nonidealities to accurately predict the behavior of mixed gas adsorption in MOFs. As a result, the incorporation of MOFs with enhanced predictability and reliability into CO2 capture industrial processes is facilitated.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of microporous materials that have been highlighted with fast and selective sorption of gas molecules; however, they are at least partially unstable in the scale-up process. Here, we report a rational shaping of MOFs in a scalable architecture of fiber sorbent. The long-standing stability challenge of MOFs was resolved by using stable metal oxide precursors that are subject to controlled surface oxide dissolution-growth chemistry during the Mg-based MOF synthesis. Highly uniform MOF crystals are synthesized along with the open-porous fiber sorbents networks, showing unprecedented cyclic CO2 capacities in both flue gas and direct air capture (DAC) conditions. The same chemistry enables an in situ flow synthesis of Mg-MOF fiber sorbents, providing a scalable pathway for MOF synthesis in an inert condition with minimal handling steps. This modular approach can serve both as a reaction stage for enhanced MOF fiber sorbent synthesis and as a "process-ready" separation device.

Abstract:Direct air capture is regarded as a plausible alternate approach that, if economically practical, can mitigate the increasing carbon dioxide emissions associated with two of the main carbon polluting sources, namely stationary power plants and transportation. Here we show that metal-organic framework crystal chemistry permits the construction of an isostructural metal-organic framework (SIFSIX-3-Cu) based on pyrazine/copper(II) two-dimensional periodic 4(4) square grids pillared by silicon hexafluoride anions and thus allows further contraction of the pore system to 3.5 versus 3.84 Å for the parent zinc(II) derivative. This enhances the adsorption energetics and subsequently displays carbon dioxide uptake and selectivity at very low partial pressures relevant to air capture and trace carbon dioxide removal. The resultant SIFSIX-3-Cu exhibits uniformly distributed adsorption energetics and offers enhanced carbon dioxide physical adsorption properties, uptake and selectivity in highly diluted gas streams, a performance, to the best of our knowledge, unachievable with other classes of porous materials.

Abstract:The emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) is gradually increasing, and CO2 adsorption from post-combustion processes in thermal power plants could be a viable option. As a solid adsorbent for CO2 capture, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have higher selectivity and capacity for flue gas. Compared with traditional adsorbents, calgary framework 20 (CALF-20) that belongs to a zinc-based MOFs, efficiently captures CO2 from flue gas and is affordable and durable also, which lays the foundation for its large-scale production. This article will introduce the overall idea of CO2 adsorption, the structure of CALF-20, selectivity for N2 and H2O, competitive adsorption with H2O-CO2 and durability, and verify the excellent performance of CALF-20 with experimental results. In addition, the possibility of mass production was also shown. Specifically, CALF-20 is not as difficult to large scaling produce as other MOFs. In fact, its large-scale industrial production is feasible with its advantages of low cost, high yield, stability, environmentally friendly and safety.

Abstract:The continuous rise in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide gas (CO2) is of significant global concern. Several methodologies and technologies are proposed and applied by the industries to mitigate the emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere. This review article offers a large number of studies that aim to capture, convert, or reduce CO2 by using a superb porous class of materials (metal-organic frameworks, MOFs), aiming to tackle this worldwide issue. MOFs possess several remarkable features ranging from high surface area and porosity to functionality and morphology. As a result of these unique features, MOFs were selected as the main class of porous material in this review article. MOFs act as an ideal candidate for the CO2 capture process. The main approaches for capturing CO2 are pre-combustion capture, post-combustion capture, and oxy-fuel combustion capture. The applications of MOFs in the carbon capture processes were extensively overviewed. In addition, the applications of MOFs in the adsorption, membrane separation, catalytic conversion, and electrochemical reduction processes of CO2 were also studied in order to provide new practical and efficient techniques for CO2 mitigation.

Abstract:The development of practical porous materials for the selective capture of CO2 from flue gas and crude biogas is highly critical for both environment protection and energy safety. Here, a novel metal–organic framework (FJI-H29) has been prepared, which not only has excellent acid–base resistance but also possesses polar micropores (3.4–4.3 Å) that can match CO2 molecules well. FJI-H29 can selectively capture CO2 from N2 and CH4 with excellent separation efficiency and suitable adsorption enthalpy under ambient conditions. Breakthrough experiments further confirm its practicability for both CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 separation. All of these confirm FJI-H29 is a practical CO2 adsorbent. Abstract:Reducing anthropogenic CO2 emission and lowering the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has quickly become one of the most urgent environmental issues of our age. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is one option for reducing these harmful CO2 emissions. While a variety of technologies and methods have been developed, the separation of CO2 from gas streams is still a critical issue. Apart from establishing new techniques, the exploration of capture materials with high separation performance and low capital cost are of paramount importance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a new class of crystalline porous materials constructed by metal-containing nodes bonded to organic bridging ligands hold great potential as adsorbents or membrane materials in gas separation. In this paper, we review the research progress (from experimental results to molecular simulations) in MOFs for CO2 adsorption, storage, and separations (adsorptive separation and membrane-based separation) that are directly related to CO2 capture.

Abstract:Different alkylamine molecules were post-synthetically tethered to the unsaturated Cr-III centers in the metal-organic framework MIL-101. The resultant metal-organic frameworks show almost no N-2 adsorption with significantly enhanced CO2 capture under ambient conditions as a result of the interaction between amine groups and CO2 molecules. Given the extraordinary stability, high CO2 uptake, ultrahigh CO2/N-2 selectivity, and mild regeneration energy, MIL-101-diethylenetriamine holds exceptional promise for post-combustion CO2 capture and CO2/N-2 separation.

Abstract:We report a rare example of a sulfonate-based metal organic framework (MOF) possessing a prototypical primitive-cubic topology, constructed with Jahn-Teller distorted Cu(II) centers and a mixed-linker (organosulfonate and N-donor) system. The inherent highly polar, permanent porosity contributes to the highest reported CO2 sorption properties to date among organosulfonate-based MOFs, outperforming the benchmark carboxylate MOF counterpart. Importantly, density functional theory calculations confirm that the CO2-sulfonate interaction plays an important role in CO2 capture. Indeed, the hydrothermal product demonstrates high robustness over a wide pH range as well as aqueous boiling conditions, overcoming the moisture sensitivity of conventional Cu-2 paddlewheel-based MOFs. In addition, bulk synthesis of this material has been successfully achieved on a gram scale (>1 g) in a single batch with a high yield. Combining the high CO2 affinity and a robust nature, this sulfonate porous material is also an efficient, recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for CO2 fixation to form cyclic carbonates under ambient conditions.

Multi-Scale Computational Design of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Carbon Capture Using Machine Learning and Multi-Objective Optimization

Abstract:In this article, we computationally design a series of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) optimized for post-combustion carbon capture. Our computational workflow includes assembling building blocks and topologies into an initial set of hypothetical MOFs, using genetic algorithms to optimize this initial set for high CO2/N2 selectivity, and further evaluating the top materials through process-level modeling of their performance in a modified Skarstrom cycle. We identify two groups of MOFs that exhibit excellent process performance: one with relatively small pores in the range of 3-5Å and another with larger pores of 6-30Å. The performance of the first group is driven effectively by the exclusion of N2 from adsorption, with binding sites able to accommodate only CO2 molecules. The second group, with larger pores, features binding sites where CO2 molecules form multiple interactions with oxygen and functional groups of several building blocks, leading to high CO2/N2 selectivity. Within the employed process model and its assumptions, the materials generated in this study substantially outperform 13X reference zeolites, in silico optimized ion-exchanged LTA zeolites, and CALF-20. Although this study does not make any statements regarding the synthesizability, stability, or interaction with water of the proposed materials, the discovery of several hundred MOFs with promising characteristics gives us hope that some may advance to laboratory testing and possible scale-up.
