Abstract:We report the fabrication of clay-mineral-based Janus microspheres that exhibit remotely steerable self-propulsion in water, facilitating their selective and active removal of radiocesium from a contaminated solution. The spray-drying of slurries of intrinsically Cs-selective illite containing iron oxide nanoparticles led to magnetic illite microspheres with superior 137Cs adsorption capability and superparamagnetic behavior. The Janus micromotor adsorbent was prepared by depositing catalytic Pt onto the half-surface of magnetic illite microspheres. The micromotor adsorbents exhibited self-propulsion at speeds as high as ~265 µm/s via asymmetric bubble generation in water containing H2O2 as a fuel. The self-propulsion of the adsorbent improved the Cs adsorption kinetics six-folds compared with the kinetics in the corresponding stationary liquid. The magnetic properties of the micromotor adsorbent enabled convenient separation and direction control of the adsorbents under an external magnetic field. In particular, the micromotor adsorbent could successfully remove more than 98.6% of 137Cs from aqueous media containing competing ions including K+, Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+.

Abstract:A ternary nanocomposite integrating polyethyleneimine (PEI), magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles, and illite/smectite clay nanoflakes (denoted as PEI-MI/S) was prepared via a mechanochemical route in a high-energy density stirred bead mill. The ternary PEI-MI/S nanocomposite was determined by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The results show that ternary PEI-MI/S nanocomposite can be prepared in the presence of intense grinding, which can graft a more amount of PEI rather than that prepared in the absence of grinding. The compressive and shear stresses in intense grinding can disperse Fe3O4 nanoparticles and exfoliate/destruct I/S clay nanoflakes. Also, the mechanochemical effect facilitates the hydrogen bond and electrostatic interaction between PEI and magnetic I/S, and the crosslink reaction between PEI and glutaraldehyde in grinding, resulting in a more grafting amount of PEI. Ternary PEI-MI/S nanocomposite was applied for the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) anions in aqueous solution. The effect of parameters (i.e., pH value, adsorption time, temperature, and initial concentration of Cr(VI) anions) on the adsorption performance was investigated. It is indicated that the adsorption of Cr(VI) anions onto PEI-MI/S nanocomposite be related to the adsorption/reduction process. Ternary magnetic PEI-MI/S nanocomposite with a saturated magnetization (Ms) of 14.7 emu/g facilitates the magnetic separation and reusability. The regenerated ternary PEI-MI/S nanocomposite can maintain 71.43% of initial activity for adsorption of Cr(VI) anions after 6 cycles.

Abstract:Iron is the most significant interfering metal ion during the purification of rare earth elements (REEs) from their mineral sources. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the sorption behavior of the Ce3+ and Fe3+ ions using polyfunctional nanocomposite hydrogel (NCHG), as well as to provide foundational data for the development of the Ce3+ ions separation procedure. The adsorption capacity was tested in various aqueous media (chloride and sulfate media) to determine the optimal separation conditions for Ce3+ and Fe3+ ions. Numerous parameters, such as contact time, pH, and initial metal ion concentration, may impact the sorption process in batch mode. The results demonstrated that separation is more effective in an aqueous medium than in a chloride medium. In addition, their sorption is poor in sulfate medium, indicating that the prepared nanocomposite was selective in separating cerium from high-grade monazite (in chloride medium). With an adsorption uptake of up to 80% for Ce3+ in an aqueous medium, the synthesized nanocomposite was efficiently utilized for selective separation. The correlation coefficient (R2) of the Langmuir isotherm model was determined to be the highest and closest to 1. The experimental adsorption capacity of Ce3+ was reported at 151 mg/g. The adsorbed Ce3+ was desorbed efficiently from NCHG.

Abstract:The polyethylenimine-functionalized magnetic chitosan nanoparticles (MCN-PEI) are synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, TEM, FT-IR, XRD, etc. The MCN-PEI exhibits a core–shell structure, and had a saturation magnetization of 18.7 emu/g (which is high enough for fast magnetic separation). The maximum U(VI) sorption capacity for MCN-PEI reaches 134.6 mg/g at pH 5.0 and 298 K. The good-fitting of both sorption kinetics by pseudo-second-order model and sorption isotherms by Langmuir model indicates chemisorption mechanism. The thermodynamic parameters indicate the spontaneous and exothermic nature for U(VI) sorption. Finally, the magnetic nano-sorbents can be efficiently desorbed by acidified EDTA solution for regeneration.

Abstract:In this work, we elucidate polymer-layered hollow Prussian blue-coated magnetic nanocomposites as an adsorbent to remove radioactive cesium from environmentally contaminated water. To do this, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles prepared using a coprecipitation method were thickly covered with a layer of cationic polymer to attach hollow Prussian blue through a self-assembly process. The as-synthesized adsorbent was confirmed through various analytical techniques. The adsorbent showed a high surface area (166.16 m²/g) with an excellent cesium adsorbent capacity and removal efficiency of 32.8 mg/g and 99.69%, respectively. Moreover, the superparamagnetism allows effective recovery of the adsorbent using an external magnetic field after the adsorption process. Therefore, the magnetic adsorbent with a high adsorption efficiency and convenient recovery is expected to be effectively used for rapid remediation of radioactive contamination.

Electroactive magnetic microparticles for the selective elimination of cesium ions in the wastewater

Abstract:To improve operability as well as the removal efficiency for cesium ions in the wastewater treatment, a novel electrochemically switched ion exchange (ESIX) technique by using electroactive Prussian-blue(PB)-based magnetic microparticles (PB@Fe3O4 microparticle) with different uniform particle sizes in the range of 300-900 nm as the adsorption materials was developed. The obtained PB@Fe3O4 microparticle were characterized by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It is found that the PB can be well coated on the surface of Fe3O4 microsphere, which can be easily adsorbed on the magnetic electrode substrate for the electrochemical adsorption of Cs+ ions. Electrochemical adsorption of 97% Cs+ on PB/Fe3O4 was achieved in less than 10 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 16.13 mg/g, and the distribution coefficient (KD) of Cs+ ions reached as high as 3938. In addition, the electrochemical adsorption behavior of PB@Fe3O4 microparticle fitted well with the Freundlich adsorption isotherm and the Pseudo-second-order kinetic models. It is expected that such an ESIX technique using PB@Fe3O4 microparticle can be applied for the separation and recovery of dilute Cs+ ions from cesium-contaminated solution in a practical process.
Preparing High-Loaded Potassium Cobalt Hexacyanoferrate/Silica Composite for Radioactive Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:We developed anew method for the preparing of a potassium cobalt hexacyanoferrate (PCH)/SiO2 composite as a granulated inorganic adsorbent to remove Cs+ from the radioactive waste solution. The process comprised two steps: The first step was preparing nanoscaled PCH particles, and the second step was stabilizing the PCH particles into the in situ-generated porous silica with aqueous silica sol used as SiO2 source. Granulated composite particles with good rigidity could be successfully prepared with this method. At the same time, the PCH content in the composite could reach 70 wt%, which is one of the highest PCH loads that have been reported.The PCH particles and composite were analyzed with X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive analysis of X-rays, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller methods. It was indicated by the results that the PCH particles and porous silica were mixed with each other homogeneously in the composite. Adsorption behaviors of the composite upon Cs+ under competition of coexisting ions (H+, Na+, and K+) were studied in batch experiments to determine the distribution coefficient (K-d). The as-fabricated composite exhibited high Cs adsorbing capacity (0.335 meq Cs/g composite) and good Cs+ selectivity from the mixture of competing ions (H+, Na+, and K+). All these characteristics made it a promising material for treating radioactive wastewater.

Abstract:This research paper details the creation of innovative nanocomposites using the sol-gel technique, incorporating polyoxometalates SiW9Ba3 to stabilize ceramic particles of strontium ferrite (SrFe12O19) polymer and Chitosan (CS). The identification and confirmation of the nanocomposites obtained at each stage were carried out through the use of FT-IR, EDX, XRD, and FESEM analyses. To evaluate their ability to remove organic dyes, we analyzed the catalytic activity of these nanocomposites during photocatalytic detoxification procedures. With its exceptional photocatalytic properties, the nanocomposite (SiW9Ba3@SrFe12O19@Cs) was able to remove estamipride poison at an impressive rate of 85 % and xylene dye solution at an even higher rate of 98 %. In addition, an extensive examination was undertaken to explore the primary variables that influence process efficiency. The study suggests that ceramic nanocomposites incorporating heteropolyoxometalate may offer a viable approach to effectively eradicate pollutants from the environment.
Effective removal of cesium by ammonium molybdophosphate–polyethylene glycol magnetic nanoparticles

Abstract:This study synthesizes a new adsorbent composite for the removal of Cs ions from waste effluents. The adsorbent is composed of polyethylene glycol-decorated ammonium molybdophosphate magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (PEG–AMP MNs) and is prepared via coprecipitation by grafting ammonium phosphomolybdate onto the surface of Fe 3 O 4 and coprecipitation with polyethylene glycol. The physical and chemical structure of the PEG–AMP MNs was investigated using various spectroscopic and analytical techniques, revealing that Fe 3 O 4 was tightly bound to the AMP particles and that the composites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior. The Cs + adsorption behavior of the adsorbent was investigated in a wide range of pH values and temperatures, using multiple Cs + contact times and initial Cs + concentration, and with interference from additional ionic species. The adsorbent achieved 99.8% removal of Cs + in the solution pH range of 1–12 and maintained its stability after adsorption. Interfering ions had little effect on the amount of Cs + adsorbed. The experimental data were fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson and Sips isotherms pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The results showed that the adsorption data fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 53.89 mg g −1 and equilibrium reached within 20 min. Thermodynamic experiments showed the adsorption process to be inherently endothermic. The mechanism of Cs + adsorption by PEG–AMP MNs is proposed to primarily be a combination of weak electrostatic attraction and ion exchange between NH 4 + and Cs + . More importantly, the encapsulation of a magnetic carrier allows for the efficient separation and recovery of Cs + after adsorption.

Abstract:A soil remediation method based on magnetic beneficiation is reported. A new magnetic solid chelator powder, FS@IDA (core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoparticles coated with iminodiacetic acid chelators), was used as a reactive magnetic carrier to selectively capture non-magnetic heavy metals in soil by chelation and removal by magnetic separation. FS@IDA was prepared via inorganic-organic and organic synthesis reactions that generated chelating groups on the surface of magnetic, multi-core, core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 (FS) nanoparticles. These reactions used a silane coupling agent and sodium chloroacetate. The results show that FS@IDA could chelate the heavy metal component of Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu and Ni carbonates, lead sulfate and lead chloride in water-insoluble salt systems. The resulting FS@IDA-Cd and FS@IDA-Pb chelates could be magnetically separated, resulting in removal rates of approximately 84.9% and 72.2% for Cd and Pb, respectively. FS@IDA could not remove the residual heavy metals and those bound to organic matter in the soil. FS@IDA did not significantly alter the chemical composition of the soil, and it allowed for fast chelating capture, simple magnetic separation and facilitated heavy metal elution. FS@IDA could also be easily prepared and reprocessed.
Selective Separation of Radiocesium from Complex Aqueous Matrices Using Dual Solid-Phase Extraction Systems

Abstract:The release of radiocesium (r-Cs) into natural aqueous systems is of concern because of its extended solubility as an alkaline metal ion and its facile incorporation into living beings. A technique for the selective separation of Cs from an aqueous matrix using dual solid-phase extraction (SPE) systems in a series is proposed in this paper. The SPEs equipped with chelates (Nobias Chelate-PA1 and Nobias Chelate-PB1), an ion-exchange resin (Nobias Ion SC-1), or macrocycles (MetaSEP AnaLig Cs-01 and MetaSEP AnaLig Cs-02) were evaluated in terms of selectivity and retention/recovery behavior toward Cs and other potentially competing ions (Li, Na, K, Rb, Ba, Ca, Mg, and Sr). The simulated solution of 133Cs, a chemical analog of r-Cs, was used to optimize the separation process. Operating parameters such as pH (3-13), flow rate (0.2-5.0 mL min-1), and elution behavior (HCl, 0.1-5.0 mol L-1) were optimized to ensure maximum removal of Cs from the aqueous matrices. The dual SPE system comprised Nobias Chelate-PB1 that minimized the competing impact of ions, while selective Cs retention was attained with MetaSEP AnaLig Cs-02. The proposed process was verified using real r-Cs-contaminated water from Fukushima, Japan, to observe the quantitative separation and preconcentration of r-Cs from the complex matrices.

Abstract:The rapid development of nuclear energy in China has led to increased attention to the treatment of radioactive wastewaters. Herein, a novel magnetic adsorbent, magnetic Prussian blue‐molybdenum disulfide (PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 ) nanocomposite, was prepared by a simple in-situ fixation of ferric oxide nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 NPs) and Prussian Blue (PB) shell layers on the surface of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets carrier. The prepared PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 nanocomposites adsorbent displayed excellent fast magnetic separation and adsorption capacity of Cs + ( Q m = 80.51 mg/g) from water. The adsorption behavior of Cs + by PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 conformed to Langmuir isothermal and second-order kinetic model, which belonged to chemical adsorption and endothermic reaction. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 to Cs + has reached 90 % in less than 110 min. Moreover, the adsorption properties of PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 remained good in the pH range of 2–7. Based on this, PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 complex was a fast and high selectivity adsorption material for Cs + , which was expected to be used in the practical treatment of cesium-containing radioactive wastewater.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline potassium zinc hexacyanoferrate loaded on nanoscale magnetite substrate was successfully synthesized for significantly enhanced removal of cesium from low-level radioactive wastes. A description was given for preparation and properties of these precursors. The physicochemical properties of these nanocomposites were determined using different techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Data clarified that supporting potassium zinc hexacyanoferrates on iron ferrite nanoparticles increased their thermal stability. Further, Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed that the nanocomposites were well coordinated and incorporated in the polymer matrix. The average particle sizes, of these nanoparticles, determined by SEM had a good agreement with XRD results. Based on characterization data, the prepared zinc hexacyanoferrates were proposed to have a zeolitic rhombohedral structure with cavities can host alkali metal ions and water molecules. The magnetic analysis showed a super-paramagnetic behavior. Batch technique was applied to evaluate the influences of initial pH value, contact time, and competing cations on the efficiency of cesium removal. The sorption process was fast initially, and maximum separation was attained within 2h of contact. Cesium exchange was independent from pH value and deviate from ideal exchange phenomena. In neutral solutions, Cs(+) was retained through exchange with K(+); however, in acidic solution, phase transformation was proposed. Sorption capacity of these materials attained values amounted 1965 mg g(-1). The synthesized nanocomposites exhibited different affinities toward Cs(I), Co(II), and Eu(III) elements and showed a good ability to separate them from each other.

Abstract:As an attractive alternative to radioactive cesium removal, we introduced an adsorptive filtration method using a composite membrane consisting of potassium copper hexacyanoferrate (KCuHCF) and graphene-based support. Polyethyleneimine-grafted reduced graphene oxide (PEI-rGO), used as an immobilizing matrix, was effective not only in distributing KCuHCF inside the composite with the aid of abundant amino-functionality, but also in achieving high water flux by increasing the interlayer spacing of the laminar membrane structure. Due to the rapid and selective cesium adsorption properties of KCuHCF, the fabricated membrane was found to be effective in achieving complete removal of cesium ions under a high flux (over 500 L m-2 h-1), which is difficult in a conventional membrane utilizing the molecular sieving effect. This approach offers strong potential in the field of elimination of radionuclides that require rapid and complete decontamination.

Abstract:Separation and recovery of lead resources from lead-containing wastewater is very important to achieve reuse of lead(II) and environmental protection. Herein, a novel magnetic separation adsorbent, polymer-grafted silica-coated acid-resistant magnetic chitosan composite (PMSC), was facilely constructed and applied for the efficient and selective adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption results in the Pb(II) mono-contaminated system showed that the adsorption process of PMSC on Pb(II) was significantly pH-responsive and increased with increasing pH, reaching a qmax value of 88.03 mg g−1 at pH 6.0, which was more than 6 times of MSC (14.47 mg g−1). More interestingly, the adsorbent with inert silica coated on the core has a higher acid resistance, with almost no iron leaching from PMSC at pH 1.0, while PMC has 3.99 mg L−1 of iron leaching. The results of adsorption isotherms and kinetics of Pb(II) by PMSC showed that Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetics can better describe the adsorption behavior, indicating that the adsorption process was mainly controlled by chemisorption and the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity can reach 111.12 mg g−1 at 298.15 K. Furthermore, PMSC maintained about 80 % of the initial adsorption capacity after five cycles of repeated use, demonstrating its good regenerative cycling performance. Also, PMSC showed excellent selective adsorption of Pb(II) in the coexistence solutions of multiple metal ions with the SPb up to 85.83 %, which was far more than that of MSC (23.55 %), indicating that the polymer grafting had a significant enhancement on the selective performance of the adsorbent. This work could provide design and preparation insights for the development of novel, acid-resistant, recyclable and fast magnetic separation adsorbents for the efficient selective separation of lead ions.

Abstract:The mass transfer efficiency between the contaminant and the washing eluent is the fundamental factor that limits the efficiency of chemical washing. In this study, the magnetization technique was employed to improve the physicochemical properties of eluent and cross-tests were conducted on clayey soils samples contaminated with lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd). Furthermore, eluent concentration, magnetization strength, and magnetization time were varied as parameters for enhancing mass transfer efficiency. Results showed that after magnetization, the viscosity, surface tension, and contact angle of ethylene diamine tetraacetie acid (EDTA) decreased, whereas conductivity and pH increased. In particular, the viscosity of high-concentration EDTA increased with higher magnetic field strength and longer magnetization time. The maximum removal of Cd and Pb increased by 64.46% and 35.49%, respectively, compared with the unmagnetized lysate. This result highlighted the efficient mass transfer and synergistic mechanism of the magnetization technique, facilitating better contact between the eluent and the contaminants. Magnetization eluent has been proven to be an efficient, cost-effective, and easily implementable method for enhancing mass transfer efficiency, providing a valuable reference for improving the efficiency of chemical washing for heavy metal-contaminated clayey soil.

Abstract:Due to the presence of several hydroxyl and amino groups on the surface, chitosan (CS) has been reported to be a potential candidate to solve the pollution caused by dyes in different industrial wastewater. However, it is associated with the recycling issues. Nano-Fe3O4 has the advantages of easy magnetic separation and surface functionalization, which can improve the efficiency as well as selectivity of separation. However, its tendency for agglomeration can reduce the adsorption capacity. MXene can provide suitable support for both CS and Fe3O4 to construct new 3O4@CS composites. In this study, 3O4@CSmagnetic nanosphere was synthesized by ultrasonic self-assembly to remove Congo red (CR). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were employed to characterize the nanocomposites. According to the batch experiments, the adsorption kinetics were found to predominantly follow quasi-secondary rate kinetics. The adsorption followed Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic, entropy-driven, and thermodynamically spontaneous process. The adsorption capacity for CR was estimated as 620.22 mg·g−1.

Abstract:Global mining of rare earth elements (REEs) has increased exponentially because of their modern technologies' applications. The recovery of REEs from secondary sources such as industrial wastewater and industrial sludge can reduce the radioactive wastes and greenhouse gases generated during their mining and processing, as well as numerous environmental pollutions from REEs commercial products. In this work, β-cyclodextrin hybrid (3O4) was functionalized with 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl (PC88A) doped in silica. The synthesized composite, namely PCDP-M-SHM, performed better toward recovering REEs. The quantitative desorption of adsorbed REEs using dilute acidic solutions was achieved over five cycles without degradation in composite performance. More importantly, PCDP-M-SHM was found to selectively purify REEs from synthetic solutions and industrial wastewater in a continuous adsorption process with enrichment factors ranging from 10 to 30. Finally, PCDP-M-SHM performed well to recover REEs from digested sludge with much higher distribution coefficients than coexisting elements. These results indicate that the synthesized adsorbent is a promising solution for REEs separation and purification from water.

Abstract:To deal with regeneration of nuclear-waste-contaminated soil, it is important to develop new materials and techniques for effective removal of radioactive cesium ions from clay. We report herein a synergistic remediation method for cleaning cesium-contaminated clay by Prussian blue analogue-functionalized magnetic microgel along with ionized chitosan. The magnetic microgels were prepared by surface polymerization of 4-vinyl pyridine and styrene on magnetite nanoparticles and attachment of Prussian blue analogues by ligand exchange reaction. The adsorption of cesium ions by magnetic microgels in aqueous solution follows the second-order kinetics process. And the maximum adsorption capacity was determined to be 149.70 mg/g by Langmuir adsorption model. When ionized chitosan hydrochloride was mixed with cesium-contaminated clay, we found that 200 mg/g clay of chitosan hydrochloride can realize 87.6 % of cesium release from clay within 2 h. Further use of magnetic microgel adsorbents can adsorb 95.5 % free cesium ions in solution, achieving an overall 83.7 % cleaning efficiency from cesium-contaminated clays. The microgels can be regenerated effectively and recycled magnetically while keeping the adsorption capacity constant after multiple times of use. The underlying principle demonstrated in this work can be extended to remediation of other types of radionuclides or heavy-metal ions in contaminated soil.
