Abstract:Abstract In a retrospective study of 39 COVID-19 patients and 32 control participants in China, we collected clinical data and examined the expression of endothelial cell adhesion molecules by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Serum levels of fractalkine, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), and vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) were elevated in patients with mild disease, dramatically elevated in severe cases, and decreased in the convalescence phase. We conclude the increased expression of endothelial cell adhesion molecules is related to COVID-19 disease severity and may contribute to coagulation dysfunction.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore whether the expression levels of endothelial cell adhesion molecules (including fractalkine, VCAM - 1 and ICAM - 1) in the sera of COVID - 19 patients are related to the disease severity and may have an impact on coagulation dysfunction. Specifically, the study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 39 COVID - 19 patients and 32 control participants, and used enzyme - linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect the expression of these molecules at different disease stages in order to evaluate their relationship with COVID - 19 and its severity. The main findings of the study include: 1. **COVID - 19 is associated with high expression of endothelial cell adhesion molecules**: The study found that compared with the healthy control group, the expressions of fractalkine, VCAM - 1 and ICAM - 1 in the sera of COVID - 19 patients were significantly increased. 2. **Disease severity is related to the serum levels of multiple inflammatory mediators and endothelial cell adhesion molecules**: The serum levels of CRP, IL - 18, TNF - α, IFN - γ, fractalkine, VCAM - 1, ICAM - 1 and VAP - 1 in severe COVID - 19 patients were significantly higher than those in mild patients and the healthy control group. 3. **During the recovery from severe illness, the serum levels of related molecules decreased significantly**: For severe patients, after the acute phase, the serum levels of CRP, IL - 18, TNF - α, fractalkine, VCAM - 1, ICAM - 1 and D - dimer decreased significantly during the recovery period. These findings suggest that the activation of endothelial cells may play an important role in the pathological process of COVID - 19, and the changes in the expression of these molecules may be helpful for the diagnosis and prognosis evaluation of the disease.
