Abstract:Biomass oxidation via chemical catalysis towards high-value platform molecules is one of the efficient approaches for sustainable bio-refinery. As an example, we demonstrate here that the oxidation of glucose and its upstream biomass derivatives to glycolic acid (GA) under oxygen atmosphere. The hybrid of polyoxometalates (POM) and ionic liquid (IL) was found to selectively catalyze the glucose in liquid-phase oxidation towards GA, in which C-C bond cleavage is preferentially initiated at α-C site by POM and terminal aldehyde of sugar intermediates are stabilized by IL to avoid over-oxidation. Specifically, the GA yield reached 77.3% with excellent carbon balance in presence of [C2COOHMIM]4PMoV. The catalytic system is also applicable in the oxidation of lignocellulose using α-cellulose or bamboo as feedstocks. The IL-POM hybrid is readily recovered by distillation to remove the products and solvents. It is durable and exhibit comparable performance with the fresh run. Controlled experiment, temperature-dependent NMR, and DFT calculations revealed that the superiority of V1/IL-POM with one vanadium substitution originates from the single-introduced V on the 4H site of POM in a stable symmetrical configuration, while IL with carboxyl groups as electron donator is unveiled to stabilize the sugar intermediates via intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Such single heteroatom substitution in a symmetrical structure for exposing active sites and IL-induced stabilization of sugar intermediates provide a new strategy for efficient biomass oxidation which generally involving cascade reactions.
