Abstract:Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is widely recognized as a transdiagnostic risk factor for adolescent psychopathologies. However, the lack of clear cut-off points for identifying adolescents with severe IU poses challenges for research and clinical practice. This study aimed to establish an optimal cut-off point for the Chinese version of the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (Short Form) for Children (IUSC-12) within a sample of 7924 adolescents from a southern city in China (mean age = 14.53; 54.8 % girls). Using the latent profile analysis (LPA), a three-profile model was identified, with the "high-level IU" group classified as probable "cases" and the remaining groups as probable "non-cases," serving as the reference standard for the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The optimal cut-off point was determined to be 42, demonstrating high sensitivity (0.981), specificity (0.976), accuracy (0.977), and an area under the curve of 0.998. Using this threshold, 1356 participants (17.1 %) were identified as probable "cases," characterized by significantly higher levels of anxiety and depression symptoms and a higher proportion of girls. In summary, by establishing a preliminary cut-off point, this study potentially offered a practical way for identifying adolescents with severe IU and facilitating targeted interventions in both clinical and research contexts.
