Abstract:Perovskite light-emitting diodes have recently broken the 20% barrier for external quantum efficiency. These values cannot be explained with classical models for optical outcoupling. Here, we analyse the role of photon recycling (PR) in assisting light extraction from perovskite light-emitting diodes. Spatially-resolved photoluminescence and electroluminescence measurements combined with optical modelling show that repetitive re-absorption and re-emission of photons trapped in substrate and waveguide modes significantly enhance light extraction when the radiation efficiency is sufficiently high. In this manner, PR can contribute more than 70% to the overall emission, in agreement with recently-reported high efficiencies. While an outcoupling efficiency of 100% is theoretically possible with PR, parasitic absorption losses due to absorption from the electrodes are shown to limit practical efficiencies in current device architectures. To overcome the present limits, we propose a future configuration with a reduced injection electrode area to drive the efficiency toward 100%.
Photonically-confined solar cells: prospects for exceeding the Shockley-Queisser limit

Abstract: The Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit, introduced by W. Shockley and H. J. Queisser in 1961, is the most well-established fundamental efficiency limit for single-junction photovoltaic solar cells. For widely-studied semiconductors such as Si, GaAs and lead-halide perovskite, the SQ limits under standard solar illumination (1-sun) are 32.7%, 32.5% and 31% for bandgaps of 1.12 eV, 1.43 eV and 1.55 eV, respectively. Here, we propose that the fundamental efficiency limits for single-junction solar cells may be surpassed via photon confinement, substantially raising the theoretical limits to 49%, 45.2% and 42.1% for Si, GaAs and methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite cells under 1-sun. Such enhancement is possible through the containment of luminescent photons within the solar cell, allowing the suppression of both non-radiative and radiative recombination losses, which were considered inevitable in the classical SQ model. Importantly, restricting photon emission from the solar cells raises the open-circuit voltage (VOC) to values approaching the semiconductor bandgaps, surpassing the theoretical VOC values predicted by the SQ model. The fill factors of the cells are expected to increase substantially, resulting in current-voltage characteristics with very-high squareness for ideal diode operation. Our work introduces a new framework for improving solar cell performance beyond the conventional limits.

Abstract:Abstract Metal halide perovskites have emerged in recent years as promising photovoltaic materials due to their excellent optical and electrical properties, enabling perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with certified power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) greater than 25%. Provided radiative recombination is the dominant recombination mechanism, photon recycling – the process of reabsorption (and re-emission) of photons that result from radiative recombination – can be utilized to further enhance the PCE toward the Shockley–Queisser (S-Q) theoretical limit. Geometrical optics can be exploited for the intentional trapping of such re-emitted photons within the device, to enhance the PCE. However, this scheme reaches its fundamental diffraction limits at the submicron scale. Therefore, introducing photonic nanostructures offer attractive solutions to manipulate and trap light at the nanoscale via light coupling into guided modes, as well as localized surface plasmon and surface plasmon polariton modes. This review focuses on light-trapping schemes for efficient photon recycling in PSCs. First, we summarize the working principles of photon recycling, which is followed by a review of essential requirements to make this process efficient. We then survey photon recycling in state-of-the-art PSCs and propose design strategies to invoke light-trapping to effectively exploit photon recycling in PSCs. Finally, we formulate a future outlook and discuss new research directions in the context of photon recycling.

Toward high-efficiency solution-processed tandem solar cells

Abstract:Tandem solar cells (TSCs) based on solution-processable semiconductors, including metal-halide perovskites and organic materials, show great promise for overcoming the Shockley-Queisser efficiency limit at low cost. However, difficulty in obtaining low-bandgap (<1.1 eV) perovskite and organic absorbers restricts the spectral range of solar-energy conversion, limiting the possibility of reaching ultrahigh efficiencies. Here we carry out detailed balance limit computations for a wide range of solution-processable materials in combination with a standard perovskite top-cell. Theoretical efficiency of 43% has been calculated for a tandem cell with a bandgap combination of 1.55 eV (perovskite) and 1.0 eV (bottom-cell material) under 1-sun illumination. We find that radiative coupling between the subcells contributes substantially (>11% absolute gain) to the ultimate efficiency via photon recycling. We emphasize the significance of using materials with high luminescence quantum efficiencies to benefit from this important effect. Initial laboratory demonstration of monolithic TSCs operating in the radiative-coupling regime is currently underway.
Photon-recycling effect in perovskites for photovoltaic applications: a Monte Carlo study

Abstract:Photon recycling has been shown to play an important role in the optoelectronic properties and device performance of perovskite solar cells recently. However, there lacks an analytical method to accurately predict the dynamics of charge carriers and photons and the device performance with photon recycling due to the complexity of multiple electron-photon conversion processes involved in photon recycling. We propose a model based on the Monte Carlo simulation method that combines charge carrier diffusion and photon radiation transport to analyze the effects of photon recycling on electron-photon dynamics and device performance of perovskite solar cells. We show that the carrier lifetime can be significantly boosted by photon recycling in the radiative limit, which yields a 37 meV increase in the open-circuit voltage for a 500 nm thick perovskite solar cell. Our results provide insights for the working mechanisms of perovskite solar cells, and the new model can be further applied to other types of solar cells with photon recycling.

Abstract:Nearly perfect photon recycling helped GaAs cells achieve the highest efficiency ever reported for a solar cell. Recent reports of photon recycling in perovskite solar cells suggest that, once optimized, it may as well achieve GaAs-like performance. In this paper, we show that GaAs and perovskite cells recycle photons in different ways. First, although bare-perovskite has been shown to have lifetimes (~1us) in the radiative limit, non-radiative recombination at the transport layers restricts the solar cell operation far below the "photon-recycling" regime. GaAs cells have no such limitation. Second, even if the transport layers were optically and electrically perfect, the poor mobility of the perovskite layer would still restrict the optimum thickness ~1um. Thus, a very high quality mirror (reflectivity >96%) is required to utilize photon-recycling. The mirror reflectivity restriction was far more relaxed for the thicker (~2-3um) GaAs cells. Therefore, a nontrivial co-optimization of device geometry, mirror reflectivity, and material choice is necessary for achieving highest theoretical efficiency anticipated for perovskite cells.
State-of-the-Art Perovskite Solar Cells Benefit from Photon Recycling at Maximum Power Point

Abstract:Photon recycling is required for a solar cell to achieve an open-circuit voltage ($V_{OC}$) and power conversion efficiency (PCE) approaching the Shockley-Queisser theoretical limit. In metal halide perovskite solar cells, the achievable performance gains from photon recycling remain uncertain due to high variability in perovskite material quality and the non-radiative recombination rate ($k_{1}$). In this work, we study state-of-the-art $\textrm{Cs}_{0.05}(\textrm{MA}_{0.17}\textrm{FA}_{0.83})_{0.95}\textrm{Pb}(\textrm{I}_{0.83}\textrm{Br}_{0.17})_{3}$ films and analyze the impact of varying non-radiative recombination rates on photon recycling and device performance. Importantly, we predict the impact of photon recycling at the maximum power point (MPP), demonstrating an absolute PCE increase of up to 2.0% in the radiative limit, primarily due to a 77 mV increase in $V_{MPP}$. Even with finite non-radiative recombination, benefits from photon recycling can be achieved when non-radiative lifetimes and external LED electroluminescence efficiencies measured at open-circuit, $Q_{e}^{LED}(\textrm{V}_{OC})$, exceed 2 $\mu$s and 10%, respectively. This analysis clarifies the opportunity to fully exploit photon recycling to push the real-world performance of perovskite solar cells toward theoretical limits.
Quantification of Re-Absorption and Re-Emission Processes to Determine Photon Recycling Efficiency in Perovskite Single Crystals

Abstract:Photon recycling, that is, iterative self-absorption and re-emission by the photoactive layer itself, has been speculated to contribute to the high open-circuit voltage in several types of high efficiency solar cells. For organic-inorganic halide perovskites that have yielded highly efficient photovoltaic devices, however, it remains unclear whether the photon recycling effect is significant enough to improve solar cell efficiency. Here we quantitatively evaluate the re-absorption and re-emission processes to determine photon recycling efficiency in hybrid perovskite with its single crystals by measuring the ratio of the re-emitted photons to the initially excited photons, which is realized by modulating their polarization to differentiate them. The photon recycling efficiencies are revealed to be less than 0.5% in CH3NH3PbI3 and CH3NH3PbBr3 single crystals under excitation intensity close to one sun, highlighting the intrinsically long carrier recombination lifetime instead of the photon-recycling-induced photon propagation as the origin of their long carrier diffusion length.
Pseudohalide-Induced Recrystallization Engineering for CH3NH3PbI3 Film and Its Application in Highly Efficient Inverted Planar Heterojunction Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:High crystallinity and compactness of the active layer is essential for metal-halide perovskite solar cells. Here, a simple pseudohalide-induced film retreatment technology is developed as the passivation for preformed perovskite film. It is found that the retreatment process yields a controllable decomposition-to-recrystallization evolution of the perovskite film. Corresponding, it remarkably enlarges the grain size of the film in all directions, as well as improving the crystallinity and hindering the trap density. Meanwhile, owing to an intermediate catalytic effect of the pseudohalide compound (NH4SCN), no crystal orientation changing and no impurity introduction in the modified film. By integrating the modified perovskite film into the planar heterojunction solar cells, a champion power conversion efficiency of 19.44% with a stabilized output efficiency of 19.02% under 1 sun illumination is obtained, exhibiting a negligible current density-voltage hysteresis. Moreover, such a facile and low-temperature film retreatment approach guarantees the application in flexible devices, showing a best power conversion efficiency of 17.04%.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells have been highlighted as one of the most competitive thin film photovoltaics recently. It is promising to further raise the power conversion efficiency if high quality absorber is coupled with rational optical design for effective photon management. Here we demonstrate the implementation of perovskite nanostructure assembly by simple solution process to interfere the propagation of light inside the adjacent absorber. It enhances light harvesting to obtain higher attainable photocurrents and photovoltage in the resultant devices, achieving a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 19% consequently. The presented nanostructure assembly integrates perovskite materials with desirable processibility and chemical compatibility by chemical synthesis and interface modification. For the first time, a synergetic localized "gratings" and enhanced fluorescence effect was demonstrated to govern photon management in perovskite solar cells. These findings may serve as a general guide to design and construct perovskite thin solar cells with efficiency approaching Shockley-Queisser limit.

Abstract:Photon recycling plays an important role in the light outcoupling of state‐of‐the‐art solar cells and has been considered a necessary condition to achieve the radiative limit of open‐circuit voltage (VOC) and efficiency. However, due to the impact of photon recycling on bulk and surface radiation of solar cells being overlooked, experimental demonstrations on the accuracy of existing photon recycling models are scarce and some contrary theoretical results also emerge. Here, we clarify the relationship between photon recycling and radiation processes, as well as the corresponding VOC losses of solar cells based on the principle of detailed balance. We show that weakening photon recycling is more effective to boost the device performance than enhancing it, promoting the theoretical efficiencies of solar cells, such as perovskite, Si, and GaAs, to 98.5%, 94.9%, and almost 100% of their radiative limit, respectively. Moreover, weakening photon recycling also helps to maintain higher efficiency when the internal radiative efficiency decreases, which benefits higher device stability. Our work provides an in‐depth understanding of the role of photon recycling in solar cells and helps to push efficiency to a new limit. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Enhancing Photon Recycling of Perovskite Nanosheet by Two-Photon Excitation

Abstract:Nanometer scale light penetration depths of halide perovskite (HP) set an intrinsic limit on the performance improvement of optoelectronic devices. Here, we show that two-photon excitation can overcome this limit by markedly increasing the light penetration depth and significantly enhance photon recycling. Through a comparison study between one-photon and two-photon excitations by femtosecond laser pulses in a CsPbBr3 nanosheet, our results demonstrate that two-photon excitation can increase photocarrier transport distance by about 900 nm, which is even comparable to the photocarrier diffusion length. Our work provides substantial insights into the photon recycling of HP induced by nonlinear optical excitations, which can benefit the performance optimization of advanced optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Efficient photovoltaic devices must be efficient light emitters to reach the thermodynamic efficiency limit. Here, we present a promising prospect of perovskite photovoltaics as bright emitters by harnessing the significant benefits of photon recycling, which can be practically achieved by suppressing interfacial quenching. We have achieved radiative and stable perovskite photovoltaic devices by the design of a multiple quantum well structure with long (∼3 nm) organic spacers with oleylammonium molecules at perovskite top interfaces. Our L-site exchange process (L: barrier molecule cation) enables the formation of stable interfacial structures with moderate conductivity despite the thick barriers. Compared to popular short (∼1 nm) Ls, our approach results in enhanced radiation efficiency through the recursive process of photon recycling. This leads to the realization of radiative perovskite photovoltaics with both high photovoltaic efficiency (in-lab 26.0%, certified to 25.2%) and electroluminescence quantum efficiency (19.7 % at peak, 17.8% at 1-sun equivalent condition). Furthermore, the stable crystallinity of oleylammonium-based quantum wells enables our devices to maintain high efficiencies for over 1000 h of operation and >2 years of storage.

Abstract:The spin-split indirect bandgap in hybrid-halide perovskites provides a momentum-space realisation of a photon-ratchet intermediate band. Excited electrons thermalise to recombination-protected Rashba pockets offset in momentum space, building up the charge density to have sufficient flux to the higher lying conduction band. This effect could be used to form an intrinsic intermediate band solar cell with efficiencies beyond the Shockley-Queisser limit if a selective low-electron affinity contact can be made to the higher conduction state. This concept is supported by analysis of the many-body electronic structure. Production of above-bandgap voltages under illumination would affirm the physical mechanism proposed here.

Rigorous Treatment of Photon Recycling in Thermodynamics of Photovoltaics: The Case of Perovskite Thin-Film Solar Cells

Abstract:The establishment of a rigorous theory on thermodynamics of light management in photovoltaics that accommodates various loss mechanisms as well as wave-optical effects in the absorption and reemission of light is at stake in this contribution. To this end, we propose a theoretical framework to calculate the open-circuit voltage enhancement resulting from photon recycling ($\Delta V^{\mathrm{PR}}_{\mathrm{oc}}$) with rigorous wave-optical treatment. It can be applied to both planar thin-film and nanostructured single-junction solar cells. We derive an explicit expression for $\Delta V^{\mathrm{PR}}_{\mathrm{oc}}$, which reveals its dependence on internal quantum luminescence efficiency, parasitic reabsorption, and on photon escape probabilities of reemmited photons. While the internal quantum luminescence efficiency is an intrinsic material property, both latter quantities can be determined rigorously for an arbitrary solar cell architecture by three-dimensional electrodynamic dipole emission calculations. We demonstrate the strengths and validity of our framework by determining the impact of photon recycling on the $V_{\mathrm{oc}}$ of a conventional planar organo-metal halide perovskite thin-film solar cell and compare it to established reference cases with perfect antireflection and Lambertian light scattering. Our calculations reveal $\Delta V^{\mathrm{PR}}_{\mathrm{oc}}$ values of up to 80 mV for the considered device stack in the absence of angular restriction and up to 240 mV when the escape cone above the cell is restricted to $\theta_{\mathrm{out}}=2.5^\circ$ around the cell normal. These improvements impose severe constraints on the parasitic absorption as a parasitic reabsorption probability of only 2\% reduces the $\Delta V^{\mathrm{PR}}_{\mathrm{oc}}$ to 100 mV for the same angular restriction. Our work here can be used to provide design guidelines.

In article number 1704836, Zhaoxin Wu, Alex K.-Y. Jen, and co-workers report that the retreatment process yields a controllable decompostion-to-recrystallization evolution of the perovskite film. Planar heterojunction solar cells assembled from the modified perovskite film are successfully applied in both rigid and flexible devices.

Abstract:Optical design rules for perovskite light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are investigated. The reduction of parasitic absorption loss in transparent electrodes doubles the benefit of photon recycling in near‐infrared PeLEDs, enhancing the external quantum efficiency to 23.9%. While current PeLED efficiencies are already near the saturation point, such an optical strategy can raise the theoretical maximum efficiency from 27% to 37%. Perovskite light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have recently experienced rapid growth in performance. While photon recycling, which involves the reemission of reabsorbed light, significantly boosts efficiency, PeLED structures are typically based on classical design principles, often overlooking photon recycling. Here, a practical strategy to maximize the benefit of the photon recycling effect in PeLEDs is demonstrated. Parasitic absorption in electrodes represents a significant loss that impedes the efficient recycling of photons in trapped modes. The design strategy is verified by improving the average electroluminescence quantum efficiencies from 19.5% to 22.0% in near‐infrared PeLEDs with thinner indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, ultimately achieving a champion efficiency of 23.9%. The effect of photon recycling is visualized by transient photoluminescence mapping. It is quantified computationally that the additional efficiency coming from photon recycling is doubled from 2.3% to 4.8% in the device by suppressing the relative loss in ITO from 39% to 13%. The strategies raise the theoretical upper bound efficiency of PeLEDs with a gold top electrode from 27% to 37% by boosting the photon recycling effect.

Photon energy loss and management in perovskite solar cells

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has increased rapidly to 25.7% in 2022. There is growing curiosity about whether it will increase further up to the PCE limit. Understanding the fundamental energy loss mechanism and targeted treatment is the crux to step forward, especially the definite and management of photons in PSCs. Here, we first briefly review the main modes of photon energy loss in PSCs and illustrate the significance of photon recycling. Next, historical research trials to overcome these loss mechanisms in PSCs are highlighted, including the application of anti-reflection coatings, plasmonic strategies, and the adoption of upconversion and downconversion materials. Finally, we make a brief summary and prospect about strategies that can help to improve photon management in the future.
Ternary Halide Perovskites for Highly Efficient Solution-Processed Hybrid Solar Cells

Abstract:Hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite materials have attracted substantial attention as photovoltaic light abosorbers due to their outstanding physical properties and outstanding power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Structural variation of perovskite absorbing materials has proven to be an effective route to improve device performance; notably, tuning of the halide anion composition constitutes a key approach to control material properties. In this work, we demonstrate a bridged ternary halide approach to process materials with the formula MAPbI3–y–x Br y Cl x , which yields high PCEs in planar, p–i–n type heterojunction perovskite solar cells. This ternary halide perovskite system improves device performance from 12 to 16% when an optimal concentration of 10% Br is incorporated into the binary Cl–I systems via increases in short-circuit current density, open-circuit voltage, and the fill factor, which arise from the formation of homogeneous crystal domains and a subtle widening of the optical band gap. Remarkably, the ternary halide perovskite devices exhibited approximately 100% internal quantum efficiency (IQE) throughout their entire absorption range (400–800 nm).

Abstract:The small nanoparticle size and long-chain ligands in colloidal metal halide perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) cause charge confinement, which impedes exciton dissociation and carrier extraction in PeQD solar cells, so they have low short-circuit current density Jsc , which impedes further increases in their power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, a re-assembling process (RP) is developed for perovskite nanocrystalline (PeNC) films made of colloidal perovskite nanocrystals to increase Jsc in PeNC solar cells. The RP of PeNC films increases their crystallite size and eliminates long-chain ligands, and thereby overcomes the charge confinement in PeNC films. These changes facilitate exciton dissociation and increase carrier extraction in PeNC solar cells. By use of this method, the gradient-bandgap PeNC solar cells achieve a Jsc = 19.30 mA cm-2 without compromising the photovoltage, and yield a high PCE of 16.46% with negligible hysteresis and good stability. This work provides a new strategy to process PeNC films and pave the way for high performance PeNC optoelectronic devices.
