Abstract:Structural colors have been regarded as an ideal alternative to pigments because of the advantages of environmental friendliness, resistance to fading, especially in the fields of textile dyeing and printing, which is highly polluted in traditional ways and needs to be upgraded. They are generated by the interaction between the micro/nano structure of the material surface and the incident light, which is closely related to the sizes and periods of the structures. Based on different nano arrangements, the structures can be roughly divided into photonic crystals and non-photonic crystals. In this review, we summarized recent research progress in structural coloration of fibers and textiles. Learning from nature, researchers proposed various methods to fabricate biomimetic structural colors, and the applications of structural colored fibers and textiles were extended. The challenges and perspectives were also presented. Hopefully, reference for the design and preparation of structural color-based textiles can be inspired.

Abstract:This paper explores the intersection of colorimetry and biomimetics in textile design, focusing on mimicking natural plant colors in dyed textiles via instrumental colorant formulation. The experimental work was conducted with two polyester substrates dyed with disperse dyes using the exhaustion process. Textiles dyed with different dye colors and concentrations were measured in a spectrophotometer and a database was created in Datacolor Match Textile software version 2.4.1 (0) with the samples’ colorimetric properties. Colorant recipe formulation encompassed the definition and measurement of the pattern colors (along four defined natural plants), the selection of the colorants, and the software calculation of the recipes. After textile dyeing with the lowest expected CIELAB color difference (ΔE*) value recipe for each pattern color, a comparative analysis was conducted by spectral reflectance and visual assessment. Scanning electron microscopy and white light interferometry were also used to characterize the surface of the natural elements. Samples dyed with the formulated recipe attained good chromatic similarity with the respective natural plants’ colors, and the majority of the samples presented ΔE* between 1.5 and 4.0. Additionally, recipe optimization can also be conducted based on the colorimetric evaluation. This research contributes a design framework for biomimicking colors in textile design, establishing a systematic method based on colorimetry and color theory that enables the reproduction of nature’s color palette through the effective use of colorants.
Designable structural coloration by colloidal particle assembly: from nature to artificial manufacturing

Abstract:Structural color attracts considerable scientific interests and industrial explorations in various fields for the eco-friendly, fade-resistant, and dynamic advantages. After the long-period evolution, nature has achieved the optimized color structures at various length scales, which has inspired people to learn and replicate them to improve the artificial structure color. In this review, we focus on the design of artificial structural colors based on colloidal particle assembly and summarize the functional bioinspired structure colors. We demonstrate the design principles of biomimetic structural colors via the precise structure engineering and typical bottom-up methods. Some main applications are outlined in the following chapter. Finally, we propose the existing challenges and promising prospects. This review is expected to introduce the recent design strategies about the artificial structure colors and provide the insights for its future development.

Abstract:Structural coloration has become a fascinating field of research, inspiring scientists and engineers to explore the vibrant colors observed in nature and develop bio-inspired photonic structures for various applications. Cellulose-based materials derived from plant fibers offer a promising platform for mimicking natural photonic structures. Their abundance, renewability, and versatility in form and structure make them ideal for engineering specific optical properties. Self-assembly techniques enable the creation of ordered, periodic structures at the nanoscale by manipulating the interactions between cellulose fibers through chemical modification or physical manipulation. Alternatively, additive manufacturing techniques like 3D printing and nanoimprint lithography can directly fabricate desired structures. By em-ulating natural photonic structures, cellulose-based materials hold immense potential for applications such as colorimetric sensors, optoelectronic devices, camouflage, and decorative materials. However, further research is needed to fully com-prehend and control their optical properties, as well as develop cost-effective and scalable manufacturing processes. This article presents a comprehensive review of the fundaments behind natural structural colors exhibited by living organisms and their bio-inspired artificial counterparts. Emphasis is placed on understanding the underlying mechanisms, strategies for tunability, and potential applications of these photonic nanostructures, with special focus on the utilization of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) for fabricating photonic materials with visible structural color. The challenges and future prospects of these materials are also discussed, highlighting the potential for advancements to unlock the full potential of cellulose-based materials with structural color.

Abstract:Structural colors, generated by the interaction of interference, diffraction, and scattering between incident light and periodic nanostructured surfaces with features of the same scale with incident visible light wavelengths, have recently attracted intense interest in a wide range of research fields, due to their advantages such as various brilliant colors, long-term stability and environmental friendliness, low energy consumption, and mysterious biological functions. Tremendous effort has been made to design structural colors and considerable progress has been achieved in the past few decades. However, there are still significant challenges and obstacles, such as durability, portability, compatibility, recyclability, mass production of structural-color materials, etc., that need to be solved by rational structural design and novel manufacturing strategies. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of bio-inspired structural colors and their applications. First, we introduce several typical natural structural colors displayed by living organisms from fundamental optical phenomena, including interference, diffraction grating, scattering, photonic crystals effects, the combination of different phenomena, etc. Subsequently, we review recent progress in bio-inspired artificial structural colors generated from advanced micro/nanoscale manufacturing strategies to relevant biomimetic approaches, including self-assembly, template methods, phase conversion, magnetron sputtering, atomic layer deposition, etc. Besides, we also present the current and potential applications of structural colors in various fields, such as displays, anti-counterfeiting, wearable electronics, stealth, printing, etc. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future development directions of structural colors, aiming to push forward the research and applications of structural-color materials.

Abstract:<p>Structural color materials have existed in nature for millions of years. Natural polymers constitute biological structural colors and provide an excellent resource for fabricating artificial structural color materials. Through either "top-down" or "bottom-up" methods, natural polymers could be processed into intricate micro/nano-structures and show unique photonic features; the resultant materials and devices find applications in a wide range of fields, including optical display, sensing, anti-counterfeiting, organ-on-a-chip, microcarriers, etc. In this review, the latest progress about structural color materials generated from natural polymers is provided. After introducing typical polymers involved in the biological structural coloration, artificial structural color materials derived from natural polymers, including their biomimetic design, fabrication, and application are summarized. The remaining challenges and future research prospects of this remarkable field are also discussed. It is believed that this review would accelerate the development of biomimetics, optics, and materials science.</p>

Structural colouration of textiles with high colour contrast based on melanin-like nanospheres

Abstract:The striking structural colour originated from photonic crystals (PCs) self-assembled with specific nanospheres has been applied in various industries. Structural chromogen with lifelike manifestations is also expected to become a novel colouration technology for textiles. However, the contrast of structural colour is usually affected by scattered light generated from nanospheres. In order to obtain high contrast structural colour on fabric substrates, the melanin-like nanospheres were prepared and applied to fabricate PCs on white fabric surface. The melanin-like PS@PDA nanospheres showed smooth surface and perfect sphericity, which assured the self-assembly of melanin-like nanospheres to form well-organized face-centred cubic and regularly close-packed arrays to exhibit brilliant structural colour. In addition, the phenomenon of double-sides structural colouration of fabric was explained via analysing the driving force of self-assembly of nanospheres in dispersion solution. It is found that the melanin-like nanospheres can replace black substrate to achieve high contrast structural colour on white fabric substrate and simplify the process of structural colouration of textiles because the dyeing process of fabric can be omitted. The feasible technique would promote the practical application of structural colour in textile field.
DyeDactic: towards biosynthetic alternatives to artificial textile dyes

Abstract:Production and application of textile dyes using microorganisms represents an important step towards sustainable manufacturing. Although living organisms can produce numerous coloured substances, they frequently demonstrate poor dyeing performance, insufficient photostability, or toxicity. To guide the development of new biosynthetically accessible colourants, we developed a workflow (DyeDactic) to predict colour at different pH values. Starting with a rapid estimation of the lowest electronic transition energy for potential colourants using Graph Neural Networks, the procedure can filter large libraries of generated chemical structures producing a targeted subset of compounds for further examination. The final step employs time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) to estimate the intensity of absorption peaks in the visible spectral region, model spectral band shape and estimate colour. To tackle halochromism, which is frequently observed for natural colourants, populations of protonated and deprotonated species are estimated at different pH values using predicted acidity constants of ionisable atoms followed by addition and weighting of modelled absorption spectra. The complete workflow is applied to four natural colourants belonging to different classes (emodin, quinalizarin, biliverdin, and orcein) and the predicted colour dependence on pH is compared with the experimental data. Both the machine learning tool and the quantum chemical calculations are validated and fine-tuned using an assembled dataset of spectral properties of 647 natural colourants. Potential chemoenzymatic modifications are discussed based on comparison of structural and physico-chemical properties between natural colourants and artificial dyes and pigments from the Colour Index.

Abstract:Fast fashion uses an excessive amount of synthetic dyes and chemical reagents in textile production, while a large quantity of fast fashion apparel and clothes go to the landfill, posting environmental safety concerns. Natural dyes not only produce delicate and subdued shades but also have the potential of novel features to achieve active textile substrate with performance properties such as deodorizing, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifeedant, UV protection, etc. Developing colored textile products with natural colorants in today's market may enhance consumer interest to an even greater extent. Therefore, finding alternative natural degradable dyes has become one of the leading trends in this field. So far, multiple plants and agriculture byproducts have shown promising results in textile dyeing with increasing sustainability and environmental friendliness. There is no doubt in the general acceptance of natural colorants to be utilized as promising substitutes to synthetic dyes for certain categories of textile products, minimizing the negative impact on the health and the ecosystem. With the continuous advancement of natural dyeing research and technology, the dyes will be elaborated even more with finesse, color yield, stability, and colorfastness. This review gives the present status of natural colorants, natural dyeing and color presentation, natural dyeing methods, technique, and performance, mordants and mordanting for natural dyeing, and selection of suitable Agriculture products/byproducts for natural colorants. We hope to provide readers with specific angles on current natural dyeing applications in the textile and apparel industry.

Abstract:The environmental impact of textile dyeing and finishing is of paramount concern in the textile industry. Enzyme and laser processing technologies present attractive alternatives to conventional textile coloration and surface patterning methods. Both technologies have the capability to reduce the impact of manufacturing on the environment by reducing the consumption of chemicals, water and energy, and the subsequent generation of waste.Two emerging textile processing technologies, laser processing and enzyme biotechnology, were investigated as a means of applying surface design and color to materials with a focus on improving the efficiency and sustainability of existing textile design and finishing methods.Through industrial stakeholder engagement and interdisciplinary research involving textile design, fiber and dye chemistry, biotechnology and optical engineering, this design-led project brought together design practice and science with a commercial focus. Each technology was used to modify targeted material properties, finding and exploiting opportunities for the design and finishing of textiles. The work resulted in a catalog of new coloration and design techniques for both technologies making it possible to achieve: selective surface pattern by differential dyeing, combined three-dimensional and color finishing and novel coloration of textile materials.The chapter provides a literature review mapping the use of enzyme biotechnology and laser processing technology within textile design and manufacturing to date, identifying current and future opportunities to reduce environmental impacts through their application. The methodological approach, which was interdisciplinary and design-led, will be introduced and the specific design and scientific methods applied will be detailed. Each of the techniques developed will be discussed and examples of the design effects achieved will be presented. And, an indication of the reductions in chemical effluent, efficiencies in resource use, and design-flexibility in comparison with traditional textile coloration and surface patterning techniques will be given.

Abstract:Structural colors are colors generated by the interaction between incident light and nanostructures. Structural colors have been studied for decades due to their promising advantages of long-term stability and environmentally friendly properties compared with conventional pigments and dyes. Previous studies have demonstrated many artificial structural colors inspired by naturally generated colors from plants and animals. Moreover, many strategies consisting of different principles have been reported to achieve dynamically tunable structural colors. Furthermore, the artificial structural colors can have multiple functions besides decoration, such as absorbing solar energy, anti-counterfeiting, and information encryption. In the present work, we reviewed the typical artificial structural colors generated by multilayer films, photonic crystals, and metasurfaces according to the type of structures, and discussed the approaches to achieve dynamically tunable structural colors.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity of human lifestyles, the demand for functionalized or high-performance textile materials has seen a steep rise. However, the methods of producing thereof are still creating a negative impact on the environment. Although biomimicry is a possible means of catering for this demand, most of the emerging biomimetic technologies follow an unsustainable path, accentuated only on transferring functionalities of nature, by using chemical-intensive applications. Nevertheless, biomimicry holds promise in sustainable manufacturing, if toxic chemical usage can be reduced while structural applications are increased. This study reviews the possibilities of existing and futuristic textile technologies that could facilitate conscious biomimicking of functional textiles, rather than intense application of chemicals. A total of 283 research articles were initially obtained and screened to review the possibilities of combining biomimetic technologies with textile manufacturing technologies. Prospects of innovative textile technologies and additive manufacturing on the futuristic possibilities of structural mimicking of biological functionalities into textile materials are discussed comprehensively. Possible construction methods, including additive manufacturing and weaving in the micro/nano scale, are suggested for structural mimicking. It is also recommended to unfold the potential of biomimicry in producing functional textiles in order to alleviate the harmful impact already caused to the environment by the textile industry.

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs) as eco-friendly structural coloring materials have great application potential in the textile coloration. However, the difficulties in scale production of structurally colored fabrics with PCs, as well as in achieving the balance between the structural stability and optical properties of PCs, limit the widespread use of such textiles. Herein, inspired by chameleon skin, the structural coloration of textiles with non-close-packed PCs was designed and prepared. The soft-shell and hard-core PS@P(MMA-BA) nanospheres were designed and prepared via stepwise emulsion polymerization for constructing soft non-close-packed PCs. The liquid photonic crystals (LPCs) were controllably prepared using a rotary evaporation/surfactant method. Therewith, the designed step by step self-assembly method enabled one to realize the controllable assembly of the nanospheres on the fabric surface, whereby the non-close-packed PCs with the cross-linked hard core as the skeleton and the fused soft shell as the filling medium were obtained. On the basis of step by step self-assembly, large-scale structurally colored fabric with non-close-packed PCs was prepared by continuous pilot equipment. The prepared structurally colored textiles possess high structural stability and color saturation, as well as the mechanochromic properties, and has the potential as a smart textile.

Abstract:In the biological world, numerous creatures such as butterflies, insects, and birds have exploited photonic structures to produce bicolor reflections with important biofunctions in addition to unique brilliant structural coloration. Although the mimicking of bistructural color reflection is possible, the fabrication involves a process of combined layer deposition techniques, which is complicated and less flexible. Here, a bistructural color mimicking, based on silk fibroin, is reported using a simple and inexpensive self-assembly method. Silk-fibroin inverse opals with different spectral positions of bistructural color reflection (i.e., ultraviolet and visible peaks, ultraviolet and near infrared peaks, and visible and near infrared peaks) are obtained by simply controlling their lattice constants. Furthermore, the inline and continuous tuning of the peak positions of bistructural color reflection can be achieved by the humidity-induced cyclic contraction of silk fibroin. The potential applications of silk-fibroin photonic structures in eco-dying and multifunctional silk fabrics are also demonstrated.

Abstract:Because structural color is fadeless and dye-free, structurally colored materials have attracted great attention in a wide variety of research fields. In this work, we report the use of a novel structural coloration strategy applied to the fabrication of colorful colloidal fibers. The nanostructured fibers with tunable structural colors were massively produced by colloidal electrospinning. Experimental results and theoretical modeling reveal that the homogeneous and noniridescent structural colors of the electrospun fibers are caused by two phenomena: reflection due to the band gap of photonic structure and Mie scattering of the colloidal spheres. Our unprecedented findings show promise in paving way for the development of revolutionary dye-free technology for the coloration of various fibers.
Preparation of polyphenol-structural colored silk fabrics with bright colors

Abstract:Conventional textile dyeing relies on the use of dyes and pigments, which can cause severe environmental contamination and waste a large amount of water. Structural coloring is one of the effective ways to achieve environmentally friendly coloring of textiles. In this work, three plant polyphenols with the same o-benzenetriol structure (tannic acid (TA), gallic acid (GA), and tea polyphenol (TP)) were selected as raw materials. Three plant polyphenols can quickly form nanofilms at the gas-liquid interface through a Schiff base reaction with polyethyleneimine (PEI) under mildly alkaline conditions, which were deposited to the surface of silk fabric, allowing precise control over the thickness of film by adjusting the time, resulting in various structurally colored silk fabric. This method for creating structural colors is not substrate-specific and enables the quick production of structural colors on various textile substrates. Furthermore, the structural color silk fabric based on plant polyphenol has antibacterial performance. This textile coloring method is simple, cost-effective and environmentally friendly, providing a new approach to eco-friendly textile dyeing.

Abstract:An increasing number of textiles is being functionalized using magnetron sputtering. A wide spectrum of colors can be produced by coating thin films on textiles via magnetron sputtering, which reduces pollution issues by bypassing the high requirements of water, chemical dyes, and auxiliary setups of traditional textile dyeing. By covering single-layer, double-layer, or multilayer films with metal, semiconductor, or ceramic targets possessing a particular structure, composition, thickness, and morphology using the magnetron sputtering method, metallic colors or interference structural colors have been successfully produced on textile surfaces. Intelligent, decorative, and practical products use coated colors and other features. Herein, we review the research advancements in textile coloring and applications of colored textiles coated by sputtering, including the sputter deposition technique, color-generating mechanism, and principles of the color regulation of sputtered thin films. The difficulties and future directions for research on colored sputtered thin films in textiles is also summarized.

The Complexity of Colour/Textile Interaction in Digital Printing as an Integral Part of Environmental Design

Abstract:Textile materials are an essential part of contemporary architecture, the environment, and urban spaces due to their unique appearance and qualities, as it is now possible to achieve both a structural function and an aesthetic quality with textiles. As colour is one of the most important characteristics of textile material, it is also important to understand the relationships between colour and textile material with different surface qualities. In order to explain the complexity of different textile materials and the appearance of colours, which consequently affects the colour properties, this paper analyses this phenomenon. The presented research analyses the dependence of the reproduction quality and colour appearance on fabrics of different construction and structural characteristics, i.e., the texture of the textile material, printed using digital inkjet technology. The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of various structural features of textiles on the colour appearance of digitally printed textile substrates, to monitor the quality of colour reproduction, and to analyse the behaviour of a reactive dye droplet on textile substrates. Printing of a particular shape was performed using a Dimatix Materials Printer DMP-2831 piezoelectric inkjet device (provided by the J. Stefan Institute, Ljubjana, Slovenia; manufactured by Fujifilm Dimatix Inc., 2230 Martin Avenue, Santa Clara, CA, USA). The behaviour of the ink delivered by the needle of the tensiometer DSA20E, Kruess GmbH (provided by the J. Stefan Institute, Ljubjana, Slovenia; manufactured by Kruess Scientific Instruments (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. Futong Dong Dajie 10 Baoneng Center, Tower B, Room 605 Chaoyang District, Beijing 100102, China), on the surface of the fabric was analysed. The samples were digitally printed on a Mimaki digital printer Tx2-1600 (provided by University of Ljubljana Faculty of Natural Science and Engineering, Slovenia EU; manufactured by Mimaki, 2182-3 Shigeno-Otsu, Tomi-city, Nagano, Japan), with reactive dyes, which were first pretreated in a bath with a specific solution. The statistical method of image analysis and microscopic imaging were used to obtain the characteristics of the porosity, texture, and roughness parameters. All results are presented from colouristic analysis based on the objectification of colour and colour differences. The objective values of the parameters of lightness (L*), chroma (C*), and hue (h°) show the significant influence of the structure and properties of the substrate on colour reproduction, and significant changes were obtained, which were confirmed by the evaluation of the colour differences. The results confirm the influence of the substrate structure on colour properties. Furthermore, it is essential to consider this complexity in the context of environmental colour design when utilising (coloured) textile installations/materials in architecture and urban spaces, i.e., in the environment.
