Abstract:Recently, there has been significant interests in the use of wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) to accelerate wound healing. In this study, a single-electrode TENG skin patch was developed using MoS2 and a biocompatible gelatin-methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel. MoS2 demonstrated electrical conductivity and excellent photothermal conversion properties, while GelMA exhibited good biocompatibility. The TENG device could harvest biophysical energy, create an electric field around the damaged tissues, and leverage the near-infrared photothermal effect to enhance wound healing. Additionally, the TENG served as a real -time sensor to monitor physiological signals. The TENG prototype achieved a peak -to -peak voltage output of 48.80 V and current output of 0.57 mu A. In vitro experiments utilizing mouse fibroblasts concluded that the TENG, with the combined effects of photothermal heating and real -time electrical stimulation, accelerated cell migration. The results of animal studies further confirmed that the TENG effectively promoted collagen deposition and angiogenesis, ultimately enhancing tissue regeneration and wound healing. Notably, this study is the first report of a MoS2-based TENG for accelerating wound healing. It is expected that this work will not only present a new avenue for the use of self-powered wearable electronics in wound treatment but also highlight their potential as advanced sensing systems.

Abstract:With the rapid development of cutting-edge technologies, self-powered breathable wearable electronic textiles have received significant attention because of portable and convenient power sources. In this work, a biocompatible and antibacterial all-textile structured triboelectric nanogenerator was designed for self-powered tactile sensing, constructed by the MXene doped PVDF (P/M) nanofibers and the antibacterial Ag nanoparticles modified nylon 6,6 ( 6/6) nanofibers as the triboelectric negative and positive materials, respectively. The effect of MXenes in PVDF nanofibers for its mutual interaction, surface potential, breathability, tensile strength, biocompatibility, and triboelectric performance was evaluated thoroughly through experimental and theoretical investigations. As developed P/M nanofiber film was paired with tribopositive 6/6 nanofibers to fabricate the TENG, exhibiting a high output voltage of 362 V and an output current of 38.5 μA. The triboelectric harvesting properties were further demonstrated by capacitor charging and the operation of low power devices such as the clock, 95 commercial LEDs . In addition, a self-powered tactile sensor based on the 6,6 and P/M fibrous membranes realizes ultrasensitive motion and pulse detection from different arteries, and the fabricated tactile sensor array shows a great potential in the application of smart wearable keyboard as well as high-resolution tactile mapping.

Abstract:Human skin, the body's largest organ, plays a crucial role in perceiving mechanical stimulation and facilitating interaction with the external environment. Leveraging the unique attributes of human skin, electronic skin technology aimed at replicating and surpassing the capabilities of natural skin holds significant promise across various domains, including medical care, motion tracking, and intelligent robotics. In recent research, triboelectric nanogenerators have emerged as a compelling solution for addressing the energy challenge in electronic skins. Triboelectric nanogenerators harness the combination of the triboelectric effect and electrostatic induction to efficiently convert mechanical energy into electrical power, serving as self-powered sensors for electronic skins, which possess the advantages of self-powered operation, cost-effectiveness, and compatibility with a wide range of materials. This review provides an introduction to the working principles and the four operational modes of triboelectric nanogenerators, highlighting the functional features of electronic skins, such as stretchability, self-healing, and degradability. The primary focus is on the current applications of self-powered electronic skins based on triboelectric nanogenerators in medical care, motion tracking, and machine tactile recognition. This review concludes by discussing the anticipated challenges in the future development of self-powered electronic skins based on triboelectric nanogenerators. This review holds practical significance for advancing the practical use of self-powered electronic skins based on triboelectric nanogenerators and offers valuable guidance for individuals interested in pursuing scientific and healthy endeavors.

Abstract:Monitoring integrated features of human perception throughelectronicskins (e-skins) facilitates developing artificial intelligence. Todate, some e-skins with good perception and adaptability have beenwidely used. However, the comfort, environmental protection, and antibacterialactivity of these e-skins have not been adequately studied. In thisstudy, we designed a sensitive, portable, biocompatible, and degradablee-skin for diverse mechanical power collection and respiratory statusdetection. A chitosan-poly(vinyl alcohol) (CS-PVA) nanofibermembrane prepared using electrostatic spinning was glued to a degradablemagnesium electrode to prepare a degradable triboelectric nanogenerator(TENG). Because of the rough structure of the nanofiber, the peakpower density of the degradable TENG reaches 37.5 mW & BULL;m(-2) and the output voltage is 115 V. The degradable TENG can realizemonitoring of joint movements and physiological signals, and it canbe placed inside a mask to monitor human breathing by a self-poweredmanner. Additionally, the TENG can be degraded by soaking it in adegradation solution (acetic acid) for 3 days. These properties willhelp improve greener and more valuable applications for e-skins inwearable devices and smart sensing.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of advancements in modern multifunctional wearable electronics, there is a growing demand for simple, sustainable, and portable electronic skin (e-skin), posing significant challenges. This study aims to delineate the development of a straightforward, transparent, highly sensitive, and high power-density electronic skin based on a triboelectric nanogenerator(S-TENG), designed for harvesting human body energy and real-time monitoring of the physiological motion status. Our e-skin incorporates thermally treated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fiber membranes as the contact layer and a film of silver nanowires as the conductive electrodes. The resulting contact-separation type e-skin exhibits an impressive transparency of 80 %, along with a nice sensitivity value, capable of detecting a light touch from a 0.13 g sponge and demonstrating good working stability and breathability. Leveraging the triboelectric effect, our e-skin generates an open-circuit voltage of 301 V and a short-circuit current of 2.7 μA under an extrinsic force of 8 N over an interaction area of 4 × 4 cm 2 , achieving a power density up to 306 mW/m 2 . With its signal processing circuitry, the integrated S-TENG showcases nice energy harvesting and signal transmission capabilities. Accordingly, we contend that S-TENG has potential applications in energy capture and real-time human motion state monitoring. This research is anticipated to blaze a novel and practical trail for self-powered wearable devices and personalized health rehabilitation training regimens.

Abstract:Self-powered flexible sensors play an increasingly important role in wearable and even implantable electronic devices. Silk protein is an ideal material for flexible sensors because of its terrific biocompatibility and controllable degradation rate. Here, we overcome the problem of mechanical flexibility and poor electrical conductivity of proteins, and develop a highly transparent, biocompatible, full-degradable and flexible triboelectric nanogenerator (Bio-TENG) for energy harvesting and wireless sensing. First, the mechanical flexibility of the silk protein film is greatly enhanced by the mesoscopic functionalization of regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) via adding glycerol and polyurethane (PU). Second, hollow silver nanofibers are constructed on the silk film to form an air-permeable, stretchable, biocompatible and degradable thin layer and utilized as friction electrode. The obtained Bio-TENG demonstrates high transparency (83% by one Ag gird layer), stretchability (Ɛ = 520%) and an instantaneous peak power density of 0.8 W m−2 that can drive wearable electronics. Besides, the Bio-TENG can work as artificial electronic skin for touch/pressure perception, and also for wirelessly controlling Internet of Things as a switch.

Abstract:Wearable electronic devices have attracted numerous attention in tactile sensing, motion detecting, and biomedical signal monitoring. In particular, a wearable and self-powered sensor combining all the merits of sensitivity, transparency, stretchability, and flexibility is highly demanded to adapt human skins. Herein, we report a fully transparent, highly stretchable, and self-powered contact-separation triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) as a tactile sensor. The TENG consists of a double-network ionogel with the transparency, stretchability, and conductivity as the electrode and one friction layer, and patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as another friction layer. The fabricated sensor reaches a maximum sensitivity of 1.76 V N-1 when detecting impacting forces in the range of 0.1-1 N. Meanwhile, with good stretchability of the sensor, the triboelectric signals maintain a good linearity with impacting forces at different tensile ratios (0%, 10%, 50%, and 80% strain). These properties enable the sensor to be capable of monitoring a variety of human activities, including finger touching and bending, breathing, and pulse beating. We believe such a transparent, stretchable and self-powered tactile TENG sensor has tremendous application potential in wearable and soft electronics.
Bio-inspired e-skin with integrated antifouling and comfortable wearing for self-powered motion monitoring and ultra-long-range human-machine interaction

Abstract:Electronic skin (e-skin) inspired by the sensory function of the skin demonstrates broad application prospects in health, medicine, and human-machine interaction. Herein, we developed a self-powered all-fiber bio-inspired e-skin (AFBI E-skin) that integrated functions of antifouling, antibacterial, biocompatibility and breathability. AFBI E-skin was composed of three layers of electrospun nanofibrous films. The superhydrophobic outer layer Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-silica nanofibrous films (PVDF-SiO2 NFs) possessed antifouling properties against common liquids in daily life and resisted bacterial adhesion. The polyaniline nanofibrous films (PANI NFs) were used as the electrode layer, and it had strong "static" antibacterial capability. Meanwhile, the inner layer Polylactic acid nanofibrous films (PLA NFs) served as a biocompatible substrate. Based on the triboelectric nanogenerator principle, AFBI E-skin not only enabled self-powered sensing but also utilized the generated electrical stimulation for "dynamic" antibacterial. The "dynamic-static" synergistic antibacterial strategy greatly enhanced the antibacterial effect. AFBI E-skin could be used for self-powered motion monitoring to obtain a stable signal output even when water was splashed on its surface. Finally, based on AFBI E-skin, we constructed an ultra-long-range human-machine interaction control system, enabling synchronized hand gestures between human hand and robotic hand in any internet-covered area worldwide theoretically. AFBI E-skin exhibited vast application potential in fields like smart wearable electronics and intelligent robotics.

Abstract:The simultaneous achievement of multiple functional attributes, such as flexibility, stretchability, transparency, comfortability, biodegradability, and self‐powered ability into electronic skins (e‐skins) is vital to their long‐term practical applications. Due to the internal contradiction between functional material combination and simple structural design, this kind of multifunctional e‐skin has rarely been fabricated or even reported. To this end, chitosan (CS), a natural material with remarkable biocompatibility, biodegradability, and electron‐donating ability, is integrated with a single‐mode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) to develop a multifunctional e‐skin, which includes sweat permeability, controllable biodegradability, high transparency, and self‐powered sensing ability. In addition, a facile, efficient, and large‐scale fabrication strategy is proposed to construct stretchable, ultrathin, transparent, and shape‐adaptable gold nanofibers (Au NFs) electrodes. Furthermore, the e‐skin can achieve a voltage response pressure sensitivity of 0.012 kPa−1 in the pressure range of 0–70 kPa and a fast response time of 70 ms. Finally, it shows controllable and excellent degradability in various solutions. It is believed that the proposed e‐skin based on the design and integration of CS and Au NFs will provide a paradigm shift for the next‐generation self‐powered transient electronics. Natural chitosan is integrated with a single‐mode triboelectric nanogenerator to develop a multifunctional electronic skin (e‐skin), which includes sweat permeability, controllable biodegradability, high transparency, and self‐powered sensing ability. A facile and efficient strategy is proposed to construct gold nanofibers electrodes. The e‐skin can realize a pressure sensitivity of 0.012 kPa −1 and a fast response time of 70 ms.

Abstract:Energy, information, and materials are the three main factors required for the survival and development of modern humankind, with energy being the cornerstone of all development. In recent years, self-powered devices have received widespread attention. As a new generation device, Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) assembled from flexible materials possess the characteristics of flexible design, low-cost, stable output performance, etc., and can be widely used in wearable and self-powered medical detection sensors of human body. In this paper, flexible bromobutyl rubber (BIIR) and PET were used as friction materials, and assembled into arched vertical contact-separation triboelectric nanogenerators following various film formation and surface roughening treatments. The treatment and assembly methods of the friction materials were studied in order to obtain the best power generating effects. In addition, due to the biocompatibility and intrinsic antibacterial property of BIIR films, the fabricated triboelectric nanogenerator was also applied to wearable self-powered sensor equipment, proving its potential in the fields of identification and gait analysis.

Abstract:Triboelectric electronic skin has attracted increasing attention in recent years by virtue of the self-powered feature. Complex and harsh technologies are extensively used to create high specific surface area to improve the sensitivity of tactile sensing. The fabrication of hierarchical micro or nano structures with efficient and facile strategy remains a tough task. Besides, rarely any progress has been reported to consider the problem of bacterial growth for long time contact of the electronic skin with the human body. Here we report a flexible, transparent, and antibacterial triboelectric electronic skin for sensitive tactile sensing. Inspired by the microstructure of rose petal, a special "replication" method is developed to prepare the sensing layer with uniform and hierarchical nano-in-micro structure, avoiding the diversity and heterogeneity of the rose petal structure. When combined with a fiber-based conductive network and an antibacterial substrate, this highly shape adaptive electronic skin can be attached conformably on any curved surface and allow the functions of distance resolution, multi-tactile sensing, and trajectory recognition in real-time. The work presents a significant advance towards multifunctional electronic skin with excellent practicability.

Abstract:Human skin is the largest organ, which covers the human body and provides us the mechanical stimuli to help us interact with the outer environment. Inspired from the properties of human skin, imitating of the complicated human sensation using stretchable electronic devices becomes one of the most exciting research fields due to its vast potential application fields like wearable electronics, healthcare monitoring and artificial intelligence. To mimic real human skin, the huge sensor network is required to attach the body, where it seems critical to guarantee the energy supply at the same time. Nowadays, the emerging triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), which can transduce the mechanical energy into the electrical energy based on the contact electrification and electrostatic induction, provides an attractive solution for the energy problem to work as the self-powered sensor. The self-powered sensor can generate electrical signal by it self-responsing to the stimulation from the environment without further energy supply devices. With four fundamental working modes and three main detection modes, TENG could develop versatile configurations to realize the various kinds of sensation. The mechanical compliance and stretchability together with the electrical conductance can be fulfilled beneficial from the advancement of material and micro/nano fabrication technology. In this way, the TENG based self-powered electronic skins (e-skins) have been developed with rational design to accomplish multifunctions of sensing including the pressure, position, strain, sliding and so on. It is expected that the self-powered e-skin will continue its fast development and make more progress to make the e-skin come into human life in the near future.
Bioinspired Stretchable Triboelectric Nanogenerator As Energy-Harvesting Skin for Self-Powered Electronics

Abstract:A bioinspired soft and stretchable triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is developed as energy-harvesting skin to drive personal electronics by scavenging biomechanical energy. Drawn inspiration from biological cells, the TENG consists of patterned interconnected cellular structures, with physiological saline as the electrode and silicone rubber as the encapsulation and triboelectric layer. The TENG can withstand a strain of 600% and has a transmittance of as high as 62.5%. The TENG can keep its high performance under various strain. The TENG also has the desirable features of biocompatibility, simple fabrication, light weight and environmental protection. The maximum instantaneous power density (2.3Hz) and direct current power density of the TENG are ~ 11.6W/m2 and ~ 2.65mW/m2 respectively. Mounted on the skin, the TENG integrating with a power management unit can sustainably drive an electronic watch sorely by harvesting energy from hand motion. A stretchable self-charging power unit with a TENG and a micro supercapacitor sharing the same solution is created, with the solution as both the electrode of the TENG and the electrolyte of the supercapacitor. This work opens up new insights for clean power sources of skin-mounted electronics and promotes the development of sustainable energy supply for wearable and portable electronics.
Spider‐Web and Ant‐Tentacle Doubly Bio‐Inspired Multifunctional Self‐Powered Electronic Skin with Hierarchical Nanostructure

Abstract:For the practical applications of wearable electronic skin (e-skin), the multifunctional, self-powered, biodegradable, biocompatible, and breathable materials are needed to be assessed and tailored simultaneously. Integration of these features in flexible e-skin is highly desirable; however, it is challenging to construct an e-skin to meet the requirements of practical applications. Herein, a bio-inspired multifunctional e-skin with a multilayer nanostructure based on spider web and ant tentacle is constructed, which can collect biological energy through a triboelectric nanogenerator for the simultaneous detection of pressure, humidity, and temperature. Owing to the poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanofibers spider web structure, internal bead-chain structure, and the collagen aggregate nanofibers based positive friction material, e-skin exhibits the highest pressure sensitivity (0.48 V kPa−1) and high detection range (0–135 kPa). Synchronously, the nanofibers imitating the antennae of ants provide e-skin with short response and recovery time (16 and 25 s, respectively) to a wide humidity range (25–85% RH). The e-skin is demonstrated to exhibit temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR = 0.0075 °C−1) in a range of the surrounding temperature (27–55 °C). Moreover, the natural collagen aggregate and the all-nanofibers structure ensure the biodegradability, biocompatibility, and breathability of the e-skin, showing great promise for practicability.

Abstract:Wearable electronics with multifunction and convenience are entering a period of rapid development. However, the longer people wear electronic devices, the easier it is for bacteria to infect the skin. Sterilization of wearables has received little research, partly because mature high-voltage sterilization systems require energy sources, which will greatly restrict the large-scale applications of wearable devices. Therefore, a self-powered sterilization system with high comfort and safety is strongly appealing. To solve the above problem, we design a wearable, self-powered sterilization system with a biocompatible nano/microporous fiber triboelectric nanogenerator (NMF-TENG) as the energy source and an interdigital electrode for better bactericidal performance. Ag nanowires (AgNWs) and carbon nanotube (CNT) are added to the indium tin oxide (ITO)-based interdigital electrode to improve the conductivity, bending performance, and local electric field strength. Due to the tip effect, the local electric field of the electrode can be improved as high as 1 MV m–1, which can kill the bacteria. The system can achieve a long-term sterilization rate of up to 90%, which has great application potential in the sterilization direction of wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have become a significant player in the expanding wearable electronics arena due to their high output voltage, diverse material compatibility, and straightforward design. For optimal performance in wearables, TENGs need specific characteristics like air permeability, durability, washability, and self-healing capability. In a novel approach, we utilized polybutadiene-based urethane (PBU), equipped with Diels-Alder networks, as a triboelectric material. This choice lends our design washability, self-healing capabilities, and considerable mechanical strength. PBU's abundant amine groups are key to enhancing its triboelectric properties, facilitating electron transfer between materials and contributing to high charge density. We also used polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) electrospun fibers as the negative layer, chosen for their electron-attracting ability and flexibility. These components were electrospun onto a conductive fabric coated with copper-nickel to optimize the contact area and increase wearability. Our device, measuring 2500 mm 2 , generated approximately 113 V and a rectified current of around 8 μA at 0.98 kPa external pressure and a 5 Hz frequency. Impressively, it maintained performance despite thousands of wash cycles and various deformities, demonstrating unique self-healing abilities following severe surface damage. The TENG has demonstrated its real-world potential by powering up to 150 LEDs, efficiently operating calculators, thermometers, hygrometers, and even functioning as a warning device through normal walking motion. Moreover, its air permeability allows for electricity generation from the wearer's breath when attached to a regular mask, as evidenced by successful LED lighting by human normal breathing.

Abstract:The first highly efficient permeable and stretchable monolithic hybrid tribo‐piezo‐electromagnetic nanogenerator‐based electronic skin is developed, by adopting a fairly facile and scalable design of two‐layer porous topological insulator‐piezoelectric polymer composite nanofibers sandwiching liquid metal networks. It works not only as an efficient epidermal power source but also as a multifunctional self‐powered sensor. Escalating energy demands of self‐independent on‐skin/wearable electronics impose challenges on corresponding power sources to offer greater power density, permeability, and stretchability. Here, a high‐efficient breathable and stretchable monolithic hybrid triboelectric‐piezoelectric‐electromagnetic nanogenerator‐based electronic skin (TPEG‐skin) is reported via sandwiching a liquid metal mesh with two‐layer topological insulator‐piezoelectric polymer composite nanofibers. TPEG‐skin concurrently extracts biomechanical energy (from body motions) and electromagnetic radiations (from adjacent appliances), operating as epidermal power sources and whole‐body self‐powered sensors. Topological insulators with conductive surface states supply notably enhanced triboelectric and piezoelectric effects, endowing TPEG‐skin with a 288 V output voltage (10 N, 4 Hz), ∼3 times that of state‐of‐the‐art devices. Liquid metal meshes serve as breathable electrodes and extract ambient electromagnetic pollution (±60 V, ±1.6 μA cm−2). TPEG‐skin implements self‐powered physiological and body motion monitoring and system‐level human‐machine interactions. This study provides compatible energy strategies for on‐skin/wearable electronics with high power density, monolithic device integration, and multifunctionality.

Abstract:Flexible, breathable and widely implementable triboelectric nanogenerator is highly demanded for wearable electronics to satisfy the technical requirements of the Internet of Things (IoT). The fabric-based wearable electronic devices have conspicuous advantages, however, how to optimize their electrical performance and comfortable characteristics is a great challenge. Here, we reported a waterproof, breathable and wearable electronics by fabricating nanofiber-based triboelectric nanogenerator (NF-TENG). The NF-TENG was consisted of the electrospun PA66/MWCNTs (multi-walled carbon nanotubes) nanofibers film with the nano-net structure used as the tribo-positive layer and the electrospun PVDF nanofibers film used as the tribo-negative layer, respectively. Owing to the coupling effect between the nano-network structure and porous structure, the effective contact area is enhanced effectively. A 20 mm × 20 mm NF-TENG demonstrates a peak voltage, current and a maximum power density up to 142 V, 15.5 μA and 1.30 W/m2, respectively. The NF-TENG can be worth spread application to resolve power source for some wearable electronics. Also, the as-obtained NF-TENG has high gas-permeability of 11.5 mm s−1 benefiting from the hierarchical networks, and thus exhibits good washable characteristics. These results indicate that the NF-TENG is promising for providing a new vision in the area of self-powered wearable technology.

Abstract:Electronic skin has fast developed in recent years for its promising application in wearable sensing. Multifunction of breathability, self-adhesion, sweat release and diverse sensing is highly required but has not been achieved on a single device. Herein, inspired by natural human skin, we develop a breathable and self-adhesive electronic skin based on an all-nanofiber platform with unique directional moisture-wicking properties and bifunctional pressure and non-contact sensing capability. The multifunctional device is integrated with four functional parts self-adhesive gel, moisture-wicking structure, pressure sensing layer and non-contact detection layer. Benefits from structural design and advanced sensing principles, the sensor not only demonstrates high pressure-sensing sensitivity of 23 kPa-1 and ultrawide non-contact detection range of 2 m but also exhibits excellent breathability of 53.9 mm s-1 and fast moisture-wicking ability. Interestingly, the sensor can be tightly attached to human skin at skin temperature and be easily peeled off at elevated temperatures by using the temperature-controlled reversible phase-transition gel. Towards practical wearable sensing applications, different movements can be identified with 97.3 % accuracy by using the four-layer Multi-Layer Perceptron neural network. This work will boost the development of next-generation multifunctional electronic skins with both wearing comfortability and diverse sensing capability.

Abstract:Electronic skin (e‐skin) has been under the spotlight due to great potential for applications in robotics, human–machine interfaces, and healthcare. Meanwhile, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been emerging as an effective approach to realize self‐powered e‐skin sensors. In this work, bioinspired TENGs as self‐powered e‐skin sensors are developed and their applications for robotic tactile sensing are also demonstrated. Through the facile replication of the surface morphology of natural plants, the interlocking microstructures are generated on tribo‐layers to enhance triboelectric effects. Along with the adoption of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tinny burrs on the microstructured tribo‐surface, the sensitivity for pressure measurement is boosted with a 14‐fold increase. The tactile sensing capability of the TENG e‐skin sensors are demonstrated through the characterizations of handshaking pressure and bending angles of each finger of a bionic hand during handshaking with human. The TENG e‐skin sensors can also be utilized for tactile object recognition to measure surface roughness and discern hardness. The facile fabrication scheme of the self‐powered TENG e‐skin sensors enables their great potential for applications in robotic dexterous manipulation, prosthetics, human–machine interfaces, etc.
