Abstract:Phenothiazine- and tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based mechanochromic materials (PTZTPE-1CHO, PTZTPE-4CHO, and PTZTPE-4CN) with different electron-withdrawing substituents (−CHO and −CN) were designed and synthesized by the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction of bromo-TPEs with the corresponding boronate esters of phenothiazine. The photophysical, aggregation-induced emission, mechanochromic, thermal, and electroluminescence properties of the synthesized compounds were investigated. The cyano group-bearing derivative PTZTPE-4CN exhibited reversible mechanochromism, and its emission maximum shifted bathochromically when mechanically ground, whereas the formyl group-containing derivatives PTZTPE-1CHO and PTZTPE-4CHO exhibited hypsochromically shifted mechanochromism. The solution of PTZTPE-4CN was weakly emissive, and PTZTPE-1CHO and PTZTPE-4CHO exhibit strong fluorescence in the solution state due to the intramolecular charge transfer transitions. The electroluminescence properties of the synthesized compounds as non-annealed and annealed non-doped prompt fluorescent emitters were studied in organic light-emitting diodes, which showed a maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.2% and a luminance of 8762 cd·m–2.

Halogen Effect on Mechanofluorochromic Properties of Alkyl Phenothiazinyl Phenylacrylonitrile Derivatives

Abstract:Three novel alkyl phenothiazinyl phenylacrylonitrile derivatives (C12F, C12Cl, and C12Br) with different halogen end groups (fluorine, chlorine, and bromine) were synthesized with ultra-high yield (>90%) and successfully confirmed according to standard spectroscopic methods. All these compounds were demonstrated with apparent twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features. The halogen effect rendered them different electronic donor-acceptor behaviours, and gave birth to peculiar different mechanofluorochromic properties. The fluorine-substituted compound (C12F) showed obvious red-shifted mechanofluorochromic feature, while almost no mechanofluorochromic characteristic existed in the chlorine- (C12Cl) and bromine-substituted (C12Br) compounds. The mechanofluorochromic mechanism of C12F was investigated and attributed to the phase transformation from crystalline to amorphous state between the original and ground samples, easy crystallinity of the compound, straight conformation of alkyl chain, higher energy gap, and significant decrease of weighted mean lifetime. Moreover, C12F showed reversible mechanofluorochromic behaviour and reproducibility by annealing the ground sample, making it promising dual responsive and smart fluorescent materials for fluorescence switches and mechanosensors. The discussion of halogen effect on mechanofluorochromic properties in this work would provide a new way to adjust the fluorescent feature of mechanofluorochromic materials.

Abstract:We synthesized three new benzothiadiazole-cored cyano-substituted diphenylethene derivatives (PTOMe, PT-H, and PT-CF3) with different methoxy, hydrogen, and trifluoromethyl end groups, and the synthesis confirmed by standard spectroscopic methods. These end groups endowed them with different donor–acceptor (D–A) effects, and they provide them with a peculiar and completely opposite mechanofluorochromic property. Red-shifted mechanofluorochromic features were found in the PT-OMe and PT-H compounds, while on the contrary, PT-CF3 showed blue-shifted mechanofluorochromic behavior. The mechanofluorochromic mechanism was explored and attributed to the metastable state of the ground compounds and the crystalline-amorphous phase transformation between the original and ground states. Moreover, these derivatives showed reversible significant mechanofluorochromic properties and reproducibility between ground and annealed states, making them promising stimuli-responsive and smart luminescent materials for mechanosensors, fluorescence switches and light-emitting device applications. The introduction of the D–A effect strategy demonstrated in this work would provide a new path to fine tune the optical features of mechanofluorochromic materials with unique and diverse fluorescent properties.

Abstract:Mechanochromism material is an important branch of intelligent materials. But it appears late and its development has encountered a bottleneck due to the low fluorescence quantum yield in solid-state and unclear color-changing mechanism. In this work, we proposed a molecular conformation-changing strategy for preparing mechanochromism materials with high solid-state luminescent efficiency. And three compounds (CPE-1, CPE-2, and CPE-4) with tetraphenylethene (TPE) and carbazole units were synthesized. Thanks to the aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) TPE unit, CPE-1, CPE-2, and CPE-4 had robust solid-state emission. CPE-4 showed excellent mechanochromism characteristic, which was better than that of CPE-2 and CPE-1. It may be that the relatively large size of carbazole could tune the twisting in the molecules, which further affected the molecular arrangements. Density Functional Theory, Scanning Electron Microscope, and X-Ray Diffraction results showed that mechanochromism characteristic is related to the alterations of molecular conformations and packing modes under mechanical stimuli. Finally, CPE-4 with reversible mechanochromism property was successfully applied in fluorescence writing, which illustrated the success of molecular conformation-changing strategy.

Abstract:Three novel alkyl phenothiazinyl tetraphenylethenyl acrylonitrile derivatives (PhC3P4, PhC6P4, and PhC12P4) with alkyl groups of different lengths (-C3H7, -C6H13, -C12H25) were prepared in high yield (>90%) and successfully confirmed using H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and mass spectrometry. Quantum mechanical computation demonstrated significant difference in the conformation of alkyl chains among the compounds, but showed no obvious difference in the migration of electron clouds. Apparent twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) nature were evidenced in these derivatives. However, totally different mechanofluorochromic properties were found in three compounds, as PhC3P4 showed an obvious red-shifted mechanofluorochromic feature, while PhC6P4 and PhC12P4 exhibited almost no mechanofluorochromic phenomenon. Therefore, X-ray scattering, time-resolved emission-decay behaviour, and differential scanning calorimetry were performed, indicating that the mechanofluorochromic mechanism of PhC3P4 was attributed to the obvious phase transformation from the crystalline to the amorphous state, and a significant increase of the weighted mean lifetime. In comparison, PhC6P4 and PhC12P4 showed an amorphous state in the original sample, and had no apparent change of the aggregated state and weighted mean lifetime after grinding, which might be due to the steric effect of the long alkyl group in the compounds. Reversible mechanofluorochromic behaviour by fuming the ground sample was observed in PhC3P4, making it a promising smart fluorescent material for fluorescence switches and mechanosensors. The discussion on the effect of alkyl length dependent crystallinity for mechanofluorochromic compounds in this work would provide a new path to modify the performance of mechanofluorochromic materials.

Abstract:Mechanochromic luminescent (MCL) materials have attracted great attention in the fields of sensing, memory chips and anti-counterfeiting. However, most MCL materials only display a two-color change and it is challenging to achieve multicolor mechanochromism with a single molecule. Herein, we reported a twisted D-π-A type molecule (PZ-BZ) composed of a phenothiazine (donor), 1,4-phenylene unit (π) and benzothiazole (acceptor). PZ-BZ exhibits intramolecular charge transfer and aggregation-induced enhancement emission properties. Additionally, multicolor mechanochromic behaviour of PZ-BZ single crystal is observed. The original crystal of PZ-BZ emits cyan fluorescence (470 nm). When crushed, it exhibits blue-shifted emission (455 nm) due to the destruction of intermolecular interactions. Further grinding induces conformation planarization, resulting in large red-shifted fluorescence (503 nm). This study provides a deep insight into the molecular mechanism of multicolor mechanochromism through molecular interaction and conformation modulations.

Abstract:Two new mechanofluorochromic-active AIE non-planar phenothiazine-based dyes (E)-N'-((10-ethyl-10 H -phenothiazin-3-yl)methylene)-4-methylbenzenesulfonohydrazide (EPMMBS) and (E)-N'-((10-ethyl-10 H -phenothiazin-3-yl)methylene) benzenesulfonohydrazide (EPMBS) were designed and successfully fabricated by simple one step aldimine condensation reaction strategy. The synthesized compounds EPMBS and EPMMBS with subtle different electron-withdrawing moieties disclosed distinct mechanofluorochromic phenomenon via fluorescence color and emission intensity changes upon mechanical grinding. The mechanofluorochromism was supported by PXRD (powder X-ray diffraction) and FESEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy)the powder XRD and FESEM analysis due to the phase transition between well-organized crystalline and the amorphous phase. Our work would provide a promising way for designing more mechanofluorochromic materials.

Abstract:In this work, two novel luminescent molecules containing distorted phenothiazine-S-oxide and phenothiazine-S,S dioxide skeletons were synthesized by oxidation reactions using different oxidants (m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid, acetic acid /hydrogen peroxide). The target compounds were all confirmed by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and EI-MS. Combined with the results of UV-vis absorption spectra and fluorescence emission spectra, we found that the different oxidation states of S-atom, from sulfide (+2) to sulfoxide (+4) and sulfone (+6), led to the blue, yellow-green and yellowish fluorescence of these compounds in the solid states. Subsequent studies showed that the molecule containing the phenothiazine-S-oxide skeleton exhibited obvious solvatochromism, and the increase of solvent polarity induced a red-shift in the emission wavelength. Moreover, this molecule also exhibited a rare self-recovery mechanochromatic behavior. In addition, these properties were further confirmed by theoretical calculations and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis.

Abstract:To achieve materials exhibiting both mechanoluminescent and mechanochromic activities, an asymmetrical triphenylamine derivative, DCTPAA, containing one aldehyde group and two cyano groups, was designed and synthesized. DCTPAA displayed solvatochromism, with a red-shifted emission as the solvent polarity increased, indicating the donor-acceptor structure's inherent property. It emitted blue fluorescence in its pristine crystal state, but exhibited green fluorescence upon grinding. The blue fluorescence could be restored after the ground powder was treated with dichloromethane vapor, showcasing reversible mechanochromism. The X-ray diffraction pattern suggested that the mechanochromic process was accompanied by a reversible phase change between the crystalline and amorphous states. Notably, despite the centrosymmetric space group of the DCTPAA crystal, the material displayed strong mechanoluminescence emission. The intermolecular packing analysis and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the strong intermolecular interaction should contribute to the mechanoluminescence.

Abstract:Four tetraphenylethene-extended phenyl/benzoxazole compounds ( TPEPBZs 1 – 4 ) were synthesized, which exhibited aggregation-induced emission behavior and multi-stimuli-responsive properties. Single-crystal structural analyses revealed that TPEPBZ-2 possessed the most planar conformation and a unique hydrogen-bonded organic framework structure, resulting in a redshifted emission. After being ground in an agate mortar, the morphologies of TPEPBZs 1 – 4 transformed from crystalline to amorphous state, and their luminescence was simultaneously shifted bathochromically to a green emission. It was proposed that the slight modification of substituents on the aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) was a facile strategy to change their solid structures and further mechanochromic contrasts before and after grinding. The initial emission of TPEPBZs 1 – 4 could be returned upon fuming with dichloromethane vapor, indicating reversible mechanochromic properties. Moreover, TPEPBZs 1 – 4 exhibited significant acidichromic behavior. The emission of TPEPBZs 1 – 4 could change reversibly between their initial color and subsequent orange emission under trifluoroacetic acid and triethylamine stimuli. Finally, TPEPBZ-1 with the best mechanochromic and acidichromic properties was successfully applied to paper for anti-counterfeiting applications.

Effects of Substitution with Donor–Acceptor Groups on the Properties of Tetraphenylethene Trimer: Aggregation-Induced Emission, Solvatochromism, and Mechanochromism

Abstract:Luminescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (ME) property have attracted considerable interests for their promising applications in light-emitting and display devices and fluorescent probes for chemo- and biosensors. Tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivatives are the most attractive species for their notable AIE performance, facile synthesis, and flexible structure modification. To study the effects of donor and acceptor substitutions and extend the applications of TPE-based materials, three TPE kindred, TTPE, BTPEFN, and BATPEFN, are employed. TTPE film displays efficient green fluorescence (lambda(em), = 494 nm, Phi(F) = 100%), evident AIE characteristic (alpha(AIE) 154), and reversible mechanochromism by grinding-fuming: from blue (lambda(em), = 472 nm) to green emission (lambda(em) = 505 nm). Replacing two phenyls by two cyano (A) groups on the central TPE moiety derives BTPEFN, whose film shows efficient orange fluorescence (lambda(em) = 575 nm, Phi(F) = 100%) and evident ATE (alpha(AIE) = 13). The mechanochromic behavior of BTPEFN (from yellow to orange emission, lambda(em) from 541 to 563 nm) is reversible by repeating both the grinding-fuming and grinding-annealing processes. The cyano groups bestow BTPEFN with evident intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) property, the emission color can be tuned from green to red-orange by changing solvent from hexane to THF, while the emission of TTPE shows much less response to solvent polarity. Cyanos also endow BTPEFN with better self-assemble ability in proper conditions, and the obtained regular microribbons emit bright green fluorescence. Further decoration of BTPEFN with N,N-diethyamino (D) groups results in BATPEFN. Due to the cooperative effects of D and A groups, BATPEFN shows dramatic red-shifted fluorescence (lambda(em) = 713 nm), evident ICT process, and enhanced solvatochromism (from red to infrared).

Abstract:Two phenoxazine derivatives 1 and 2 were synthesized and their photoluminescent properties were systematically investigated. These two compounds presented crystallization-induced emission (CIE) with polymorphism-dependent emission (PDE). Compound 1 presented two single crystal structures with maximum emission wavelengths of 540 nm and 560 nm, while compound 2 possessed three single crystal structures with maximum emission wavelengths of 516 nm, 547 nm, and 556 nm, respectively. Moreover, compound 1 showed reversible mechanochromic luminescence by grinding/heating or solvent fuming processes.

Abstract:Two novel cyanostilbene-modified tetraphenylethene derivatives were constructed by Williamson etherification, Suzuki coupling and Knoevenagel condensation reactions. Both compounds exhibited aggregation-induced emission and strong solid-state fluorescence behaviors with extremely high fluorescence quantum yield due to the distorted molecular conformation. Strangely, the compound without additional phenyl spacer did not show mechanochromic behavior, whereas, the compound with an additional phenyl spacer exhibited distinct mechanochromic behavior with the red-shifted emission wavelength from 480 nm to 503 nm upon grinding. The distinct differences in mechanochromic behaviors between the reported compounds could be attributed to that the additional phenyl spacer had benefits for the molecular planarization with external mechanical force. This investigation provided a method to construct mechanochromic material with aggregation-induced emission behavior and high solid-state fluorescence quantum yield and promoted the utilization in rewritable luminescent paper.

Abstract:Mechanochromic luminogenic (MCL) materials have always been shimmering with irresistible scientific charm owing to their promising applications in mechanosensors optical storage and optoelectronic devices. In present work, two cyanoethylene-functionalized pyrene-based luminogens 3 were designed and synthesized. Interestingly, the experimental results show that 3a and 3b exhibit distinct photophysical behaviors in dilute solution and various solid states. The substituent effect is even more obvious with regard to their mechanochromic property. A blue-shift for 3a (12 nm) and remarkable red-shift for 3b (47 nm) were observed with mechanical stimuli. All intriguing emission behaviors were further explored by in-depth theoretical simulations combining with molecular packing morphology based on X-ray crystallography. These results indicate that the significant interlayer slippage upon grinding in 3a contributes to the blue-shift and enhanced emission by weaken the π•••π interactions, while the collapsed intermolecular interactions in 3b through mechanical stimulation give rise to the red-shifted and attenuated luminescence by strengthen molecular motion freedom and planar configuration. Present work provides a valuable strategy to construct pyrene-based MCL materials based on substituent effect.

Abstract:Herein, a facile strategy was established to build mechanoresponsive luminogens with high sensitivity to substituents and positional effects. Even in slightly different structures, distinct optical phenomena, including fluorescence efficiency and mechano-responsive properties, were clearly present. Mechanofluorochromic Properties of Β-Iminoenolate Boron Complexes Tuned by the Electronic Effects of Terminal Phenothiazine and Phenothiazine-S,s-dioxide

Abstract:We report herein the reversible mechanochromic luminescence property of (dibenzo[a,c]phenazine-9,14-diylbis(4,1-phenylene))dimethanol (DPAC-OH) where the photoluminescene color changes from blue to blue-green upon grinding, which can be restored upon slow solvent evaporation. 9,14-bis(4-(methoxymethyl)phenyl)-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC-OCH 3 ) is synthesized as the control sample to further demonstrate the role of hydrogen bonding in DPAC-OH. The vibration-induced emission (VIE) mechanism and the presence of hydrogen bonding interactions are utilized to account for the mechanochromic phenomenon.
