Abstract:Water contamination caused by ammonia effluents has become a critical environmental issue. In this study, a coupled system of water splitting and hollow fiber extraction was proposed for highly efficient ammonia capture from wastewater that has a high ammonia nitrogen concentration. Our results showed that the ammonia capture ratio reached >99%, while the ammonia nitrogen concentration in the wastewater decreased to <10 mg/L, the concentration of the by-product ((NH4)2SO4) increased to as high as 139.1 g/L, and the energy consumption was as low as 111.26 kJ/(mol NH4+-N). Furthermore, the captured ammonia in the form of the (NH4)2SO4 with a high concentration can be potentially utilised in the field of carbon-free energy storage and electrical power generation, and can also be directly used as nitrogen fertilizer. These findings suggest that the coupled system of water splitting and hollow fiber extraction is a cost-effective, sustainable, and environmentally-friendly method for ammonia capture.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of high - concentration ammonia - nitrogen pollution in wastewater. Specifically, the research proposes a coupled system combining water electrolysis and hollow - fiber extraction for efficiently capturing ammonia from wastewater containing high - concentration ammonia - nitrogen. The key objectives of the paper include: 1. **Improve ammonia - capture efficiency**: Verified by experiments, the ammonia - capture rate of this system reaches more than 99%, while the ammonia - nitrogen concentration in the wastewater is reduced to less than 10 mg/L. 2. **Reduce energy consumption**: While achieving efficient ammonia capture, the energy consumption of this system is only 111.26 kJ/(mol NH₄⁺ - N), showing low energy consumption. 3. **Generate valuable by - products**: The captured ammonia exists in the form of high - concentration ammonium sulfate ((NH₄)₂SO₄), and its concentration can reach 139.1 g/L. These ammonium sulfates can be used for carbon - free energy storage, power generation or directly as nitrogen fertilizers, having high economic value. 4. **Be environmentally friendly**: This method not only effectively solves the ammonia - nitrogen pollution problem in wastewater, but also provides a sustainable and environmentally - friendly solution. ### Main research contents 1. **System design**: - **Water electrolysis (Water Splitting)**: In the bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) process, acid and alkali are respectively generated in the acid chamber and the alkali chamber through water electrolysis for adjusting the pH value and ammonia removal. - **Hollow fiber extraction (Hollow Fiber Extraction)**: The basified wastewater passes through one side of the hollow - fiber membrane, while the acid solution passes through the other side, achieving efficient ammonia capture. 2. **Experimental setup**: - **Materials**: Ion - exchange membranes (CMX, AMX) and bipolar membranes (BP - 1E), as well as hollow - fiber membrane contactor (HFMC) modules were used. - **Simulated wastewater**: Simulated wastewater with high ammonia - nitrogen concentration was prepared by adding NH₄Cl, NaCl and Na₂SO₄. - **Experimental device**: It includes BMED units and HFMC modules, as well as related circulation systems and control devices. 3. **Experimental process**: - **BMED process**: By adjusting the current density and the initial acid concentration, the generation efficiency of acid and alkali is optimized, and the leakage of H⁺ ions is reduced. - **HFMC process**: The basified wastewater and the acid solution respectively pass through the lumen and the shell of the hollow - fiber membrane to achieve efficient ammonia capture. 4. **Results and discussion**: - **Influence of current density**: Research shows that a higher current density helps to increase the acid concentration, reduce the leakage of H⁺ ions, and thus improve the overall performance of the system. - **Influence of initial acid concentration**: A higher initial acid concentration is beneficial to ammonia capture, but an excessively high acid concentration will lead to an increase in H⁺ ion leakage and affect the performance of the system. - **Economic analysis**: Through economic analysis, the cost - effectiveness and environmental - friendliness of this coupled system are proved. ### Conclusion This research has successfully developed a coupled system combining water electrolysis and hollow - fiber extraction, which can capture ammonia from wastewater with high ammonia - nitrogen concentration efficiently and with low energy consumption, and generate valuable by - products. This method not only solves the ammonia - nitrogen pollution problem in wastewater treatment, but also provides new ways for carbon - free energy storage and power generation, having important environmental and economic significance.
