Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic is a constraint to leisure behaviour of historic proportions. Paradoxically, it might also be a catalyst for a reconsideration of the importance of leisure to well-being in later life. This paradox, on a smaller scale, was addressed previously by Kleiber. In their examination of how factors constraining behaviour may actually produce enduring benefits for individuals. The proposition explored in this paper is that COVID-19 and its concomitant circumstances and social problems provoke an alteration in leisure activity and experience in the process of adjusting not only to the pandemic but also to the aging process. Prominent theories of adaptation in later life suggest that the changes that occur in response to negative events in later life are more limited than those occurring in earlier adulthood and that older adults may have resilience for dealing with its effects. This paper focuses on two categories of positive constraint outcomes from the model of beneficial constraint developed by Kleiber et al. (2008 Kleiber, D., McGuire, F. A., Aybar-Damali, B., & Norman, W. (2008). Having more by doing less: The paradox of leisure constraints in later life. An examination of data from a variety of sources provides limited support for occurrence of these aspects of the model and for its special relevance to this pandemic period.

Abstract:Although this theme issue is being published in 2023 and I completed my term as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Leisure Research at the end of 2022, the papers in this theme issue were selected for publication in this issue before my term as editor was completed. Perhaps it is appropriate that the last issue for which I was responsible for as Editor-in-Chief is a theme issue on leisure and COVID-19 as my term as editor approximated the period during which the COVID-19 pandemic was prevalent. When I agreed to be editor I was expecting and eagerly looking forward to attending and meeting in-person with the Journal of Leisure Research Associate Editors at the 2020 and 2021 National Recreation and Park Association congresses as well as The Academy of Leisure Sciences conferences in 2021 and 2022. Due to the pandemic, I did not attend these conferences in person because they were online, or hybrid in the case of the 2021 NRPA Congress, and thus our editorial board meetings were online. It was only during the very end of my term as editor that I was able to attend an in-person meeting with a few of the Associate Editors at the 2022 National Recreation and Park Association Congress.

Leisure mobility changes during the COVID-19 pandemic - An analysis of survey and mobile phone data in Sweden

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic affected travelling in general, and the leisure mobility and the spatial distribution of travellers in particular. In most parts of the world, both domestic and international travel has been replaced by restrictive policies and recommendations on mobility. A modal shift from public transport towards private cars and micro-mobility was also observed. This study seeks to trace the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for leisure mobility. We use a unique Swedish database containing daily mobility patterns of pseudonymised mobile phone users, combined with a survey on vacation transport behaviour. By contrasting mobility patterns for selected holiday days during the unaffected summer of 2019 with corresponding dates in 2020 and 2021, we are able to model and detect the pandemic effects on tourism and recreational mobility. Moreover, by identifying the general mobility patterns, we analyse whether and how the transport mode has changed. Using data on the spatial distribution of recreational amenities, we identify locations that were favoured during the pandemic. In Sweden, even though the pandemic decreased in spread and severity during the summers, most travel restrictions were still enforced, international vacations uncommon, and larger vacation spots, such as amusement parks and cultural institutions, were closed down. Swedish vacation homes in remote or rural areas were quickly booked. This change in recreational behaviour, where less populated areas, open air and nature recreation were favoured over indoor or crowded urban cultural activities, was more substantial in 2021 than in 2020. This result shows how policies can effectively be developed, so that Swedes respond properly to recommendations and adjust their vacation plans.

Abstract:The role of healthcare workers in safeguarding public health, especially during high-risk events such as a pandemic, is paramount. This research explores the impact of leisure patterns on the well-being, risk perception, anxiety, and resilience of healthcare workers in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Through a comprehensive analysis of 662 valid questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, we uncover the intricate relationship between leisure activities and the holistic well-being of healthcare professionals. The findings reveal that leisure is not merely a pastime but a vital coping mechanism within the demanding landscape of high-stress healthcare environments. Distinct leisure modes have varying influences on healthcare workers' perceptions of environmental risks and work-related stress, challenging conventional wisdom. Our study emphasizes the significance of structured leisure engagement in enhancing the psychological resilience of healthcare professionals. It underscores the importance of recognizing individual preferences and personalizing well-being support programs, offering a fresh perspective on promoting mental and emotional wellness. The theoretical and managerial implications of our findings provide valuable insights for healthcare organizations and policymakers to design tailored support systems, resources, and leisure spaces that mitigate environmental risks, work stress, leisure disorders, and anxiety and enhance overall well-being, thereby empowering those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic is having an unprecedented impact on the leisure industry. Mandatory directives such as social distancing and stay-at-home/shelter-in-place orders reduce disease transmission and protect the health and well-being of the public. However, such strategies might impair active leisure participation. We identify challenges and constraints of engaging in active leisure activities during the pandemic and explore how the general public can use technology and big data analytics to negotiate constraints during this uncertain time. Creative applications of big data analytics demonstrate that negotiating active leisure constraints and battling the pandemic are not contradictory goals. We recommend society to harness the power of these data-driven tools to effectively navigate interpersonal, structural, and intrapersonal constraints to active leisure while improving the efficiency with which we combat the spread of COVID-19.

College Students' Adaptations of Activities and Experiences During the Pandemic Occupational Disruption

Abstract:During life disruptions, people adapt their activities responding to environmental stressors, resulting in new routines that support well-being. To explore college students' daily life experiences during the pandemic. Thirty students completed three time-use diaries, and responded to a survey on activity change during Coronavirus Disease 2019, satisfaction with social/leisure occupations, and well-being. Survey questions, duration of activities, and levels of were analyzed across 3 days. Exercise, school, socializing, and work were the most changed, often eliminating the activity, or modifying the activity, social context, or location. Time-use data indicated participants engaged in similar types of activities compared with nonpandemic times, but experienced different levels of pleasure and productivity related to some activities. Participants adjusted their activities/experiences to support their well-being. Examination of students' occupations and experiences uncovered the dynamic interaction between all levels of context-the macro (pandemic) and the micro (place to study).

Abstract:This inquiry was a dilemma-driven, object-inquiry self-study. The study followed visual methodologies in unpacking the impact of Covid-19 on the practices of a practitioner at a rural university. During the Covid-19 pandemic, I was becoming increasingly dissatisfied with my daily practice as an academic because I struggled to locate my footing in what has been dubbed the ‘new normal’ about online student teaching and assessment. In my bid to investigate the dissatisfactions I faced due to Covid-19, I followed the self-study methodology, which entailed my engagement in reflexivity cycles, and feedback from critical friends. My critical friends played a crucial validation role during my data collection, analysis, and drawing of conclusions from multiple data forms that included journal entries and discussions with others. The collected data was thematically and analyzed from deductive to inductive perspective through the process of coding. This inquiry established that the outbreak of Covid-19 led to dilemmas of practice that stemmed from my being deskilled, techno and Covid-phobic; poor individual adaptability; inadequate TPKC; and the shortcomings of working as an isolated silo. It emerged that these dilemmas of practice escalated into professional traumas through working in isolated silos in virtual platforms. Thus, through making our challenges of practice public, we tend to benefit from the pool of probing expertise of others. Whilst the advent of Covid-19 posed unwelcome professional traumas, it was through the probing power of ‘the second voice’ that the over-shadowed professional growth opportunities in this pandemic induced ‘new normal’ was unveiled.

Abstract:What can lifelong education researchers learn from the COVID-19 pandemic? There are, of course, 'quick' lessons: societies, for instance, clearly learn from experience. East Asian societies, and governments, learned from SARS and the devastating effect it had in cities such as Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Beijing in 2003 (Abraham, 2004). Of course there was the general lesson that a new coronavirus should not be taken lightly: no doubt there was also a lot of deeper and more detailed knowledge developed within institutions – hospitals, emergency services, schools and the like – about how to handle such situations. In this editorial, however, we want to reflect a little more widely on what light the pandemic shines on longstanding problems in lifelong education.

Abstract:Leisure is a major sphere of both private and public life. It is thus of concern that the identity and profile of Leisure Studies in the Higher Education curricula of the United Kingdom have declined in prominence over the past decade. This trend is not peculiar to Leisure Studies; the social sciences as a whole are threatened by a neoliberal economic discourse which increasingly informs Higher Education strategic management. The aim of this article is to investigate the impacts of the declining status of Leisure Studies as experienced by lecturers and researchers in the subject field. It is based upon a project commissioned by the Higher Education Academy in 2015. It was found that Leisure Studies faces two principal challenges. The first is to re-establish its status as a subject field within the social sciences, the second is to ensure it retains a relevance to leisure practice, particularly in terms of the management of its provision. The article proposes greater academic engagement in ideational ‘border crossings’ to advance thinking on leisure in the social sciences and to explore opportunities for collaboration within them. We conclude that Leisure Studies arguably suffers from a crisis of representation, as opposed to a crisis of relevance.

Abstract:The COVID-19 Pandemic caused dramatic changes in all aspects of daily life. As the British public was ordered to stay at home, non-essential businesses shut their doors, resulting in an abrupt shift in working practices towards home working. In Higher Education, university campuses closed to students and staff. In this article, two disabled lecturers working in Higher Education in the UK reflect on their experiences during this rapid shift in working practices. With a particular focus on how their different impairments intersected with the changes occurring during this time, they employ autoethnography as an emancipatory method to consider the ways in which their working lives were impacted by the decisions made during this period. As well as illuminating their own individual experiences, they use these accounts to consider the wider implications for disabled students and academics. They conclude that, whilst this has been a period of challenge, uncertainty and rapid change, there are also lessons to be learnt regarding accessibility and the possibility for adaptation going forward, for staff and students alike. They suggest that as we emerge from this period of crisis, we need to use these experiences as leverage for positive change; for designing ways of teaching and learning that accommodate everyone, rather than getting swept up in an unthinking pursuit of returning to ‘business as usual’.
A Chance and a Challenge: Students’ Reflections on Online Study Abroad Experiences

Abstract:COVID-19’s severe impact on the travel industry has had a ripple effect on both international travel and study abroad (SA) programs. This has complicated long and short-term planning, and as a result, study abroad programs have either been disrupted or cancelled. With the advent and widespread uptake of ICT, “online study abroad” (OSA) courses were offered as alternatives to locationbased study abroad programs. In this paper, I reveal the findings of a discourse analysis of OSA testimonials given by 75 tertiary level students in both private and public institutions. The overall findings reveal that although OSA programs are not exactly ideal due to time differences and the lack of cultural immersion, the smaller class sizes provided students with more opportunities to speak up and interact with others. As well as highlighting the perceived advantages and disadvantages of OSA programs, I argue that retaining such programs in a postpandemic era will not only promote inclusivity by providing options for students with financial difficulties or disabilities, but it will offer senior students occupied with job-hunting obligations a last chance to study abroad before entering the workforce.
Daily activities of older adults before and during the COVID pandemic

Abstract:Objectives: This study examines how older adults' (65 years old plus) daily activities shifted in the years around the coronavirus disease (COVID) pandemic. Methods: Using data from American Time Use Survey, this study compares activities across the pre-pandemic (2019 to March 2020), early-pandemic (May to December 2020), and pandemic-normal (2021) periods. Results: In the first year of the pandemic, there was less time spent on average on leisure outside the home, traveling, and with nonhousehold members, and more time alone and at home, compared with before the pandemic. Moving beyond averages, sequence and cluster analyses find 5 similar typologies of days across the three periods, characterized by days predominated by (a) housework, (b) leisure at home, (c) TV, (d) a combination of leisure at home and outside with TV, and (e) paid work. Duration of time across various daily activities differed, however, even for the same clusters. For example, in days predominated by indoor leisure, adults spent 405 min in this activity before the pandemic, 432 min during the early-pandemic period, and 549 min during the pandemic-normal period. We also observed changes in the proportion of older adults in each cluster. Across the pre-pandemic and early-pandemic periods, the proportion of days predominated by leisure at home increased (9.9%-17.9%) whereas the proportion belonging to days predominated by housework decreased (45.7%-17.6%). Discussion: COVID-19 shifted the daily life of older adults, and our findings are consistent with selection, optimization, and compensation theory, documenting that older adult adapted across the first 2 years of the pandemic.
Pandemic Diaries: Lived Experiences of Loneliness, Loss, and Hope Among Older Adults During COVID-19

Abstract:Background and objectives: While research on loneliness in later life has increased during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, we still lack diverse qualitative approaches capturing lived experiences of lonely older adults. Approaches to research with older adults instead of on them are also scant in gerontological literature on loneliness. Through solicited diaries, this study aimed to explore how older Australians who were already lonely before the pandemic managed lockdowns (stay-at-home orders) in Victoria, Australia, which lived through one of the longest lockdowns in the world. Research design and methods: This article is based on qualitative diaries completed by 32 older adults (aged 65 and older). Diaries provide a 'live' document where participants become active research partners, recording and sharing their perceptions and experiences. This method is useful to capture sensitive issues, but to the best of our knowledge has not been employed in loneliness studies. Data were thematically analyzed through the identification of themes within and across diaries. Results: Loneliness was defined by participants as a detrimental absence of companionship and meaningful social interactions. For most, lockdowns exacerbated loneliness, presented new triggers, and upended coping strategies. The disruption of the 'emotion work' involved with managing loneliness led to a reconfiguration of response strategies, including through digital technology, which brought both challenges (e.g., digital ageism) and opportunities (e.g., novel communication forms). Discussion and implications: Understanding how older people living alone define and respond to loneliness in diverse contexts-for example, before and during a pandemic that restricts social interaction-provides critical insights to inform interventions to tackle loneliness.
Altered place engagement since COVID-19: A multi-method study of community participation and health among older americans

Abstract:Little is known about longer-term changes to community participation since the COVID-19 pandemic onset and potential implications for health and wellbeing in later life. This multi-method investigation analyzes national data from the COVID-19 Coping Study. Statistical analyses of survey data (n = 1,630; mean age 67.9 years; data collected April/May 2022) identified that adults residing in the US still tended to stay inside their homes more often since the pandemic onset. Overall, participants decreased their engagement with amenities such as eateries, gyms, and arts and cultural sites. Reflexive thematic analysis of semi-structured in-depth interviews (n = 57; mean age 70.7 years; data collected May-July 2021) identified altered community participation with perceived long-term impacts on physical, mental, and social health and wellbeing. The results provide novel insights about the critical nature of 'third places' to support later life, and policy implications to strengthen community environments. Investment in outdoor, well-ventilated, and distanced third places may support wellbeing.

Abstract:Despite dissertation's significance in enhancing the quality of scholarly outputs in tourism and hospitality fields, insufficient research investigates the challenges and disruptions students experience amidst a public health crisis. This study aims to fill the research gaps and integrate attribution and self-efficacy theories to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic influences students' decision-making and behaviours during the dissertation writing process. Qualitative exploration with 15 graduate students was conducted. The results indicate that adjustment of data collection approaches was the most shared external challenge, while students' religious background and desire for publishing COVID related topics were primary internal motivations.

Abstract:The purpose of the current study was twofold: (1) to explain teachers’ perception on the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on teaching physical education and (2) to explore teachers’ reflexivity, including their post-pandemic teaching possibilities. Mixed-methods research with sequential explanatory design was utilized in this study. A number of 41 physical education teachers were recruited to participate in the study. The first phase was a quantitative method designed to collect survey data about the impacts of the pandemic on their teaching. A descriptive statistic was used to analyze the data. The result of the first phase facilitated the development of the second phase focusing on teachers’ reflection on their teaching. Four teachers were selected to participate in in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed thematically assisted by a computer program for qualitative data analysis, namely ATLAS.ti. Result showed that the pandemic had impacted on students’ motivations, teachers’ workload, learning objectives, face-to-face classrooms, learning process, and assessment. It has also been revealed that teachers identified advantages of getting new learning resources and development. These included teachers’ new skills of using technology for learning, increased creativity in teaching, and close collaboration with parents. The study concluded that the pandemic had impacts on the teaching PE as well as student learning. However, they eventually facilitated reflexivity on how PE learning would be in the future.

Abstract:Background: The unexpected COVID-19 pandemic impacted not only students at institutions of higher learning, but also faculty who often made rapid transitions from face-to-face to online or distance learning. Distance learning has been shown to negatively impact college students’ physical activity, screen time, and mental health concerns. Little is known, however, about the transition and impact of the pandemic and distance learning on university faculty. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the rapid transition from traditional face-to-face teaching methodologies to distance learning on professional quality of life, physical activity, screen time, and anxiety and depression among faculty. Methods: A descriptive survey design with snowball sampling, was used to collect data anonymously, online. An electronic survey was developed to explore professional quality of life, physical activity, screen time, anxiety, and depression. Results: The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent rapid transition of teaching and learning methodologies impacted not only students, but faculty at institutions of higher learning. Most faculty indicated concerns with their professional quality of life, putting them at moderate risk of burnout. A negative correlation between leisure time and anxiety or depression was found as well as a positive correlation between increased screen time and depression. Conclusion: Increased screen time and decreased physical activity or leisure time may contribute to increased faculty burnout, depression, and anxiety. University administration may need to consider strategies to help faculty cope with transitions to unfamiliar teaching methodologies and self-care behavioral changes to avoid faculty dissatisfaction and disengagement.
