Abstract:Widespread and ineffective dye treatment in aquatic environment leads to serious pollution problems, threatening ecology and human health. Herein, manganese cerium bimetallic oxide cathode material (MnCeOx@GF) x @GF) was prepared by hydrothermal method combined with calcination, and the electrochemical Fenton degradation performance of a typical dye Rhodamine B (Rh B) was investigated. The results show that the degradation of Rh B by MnCeOx@GF x @GF can reach 96.5 % within 2 h in acidic environment and continue to perform effectively after 4 repeated experiments. Combined with SEM and electrochemical test results, it can be seen that the bimetallic composite oxides formed by manganese and cerium on the surface of the support can effectively enhance the catalytic activity of the material, the addition of cerium changes the morphology of manganese oxides and promotes the generation of multiple valence composite oxides of transition metals, and improves the degradation of Rh B. Based on the free radical masking experiments, hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) center dot OH) is the main active substance in the electro-Fenton degradation process. This work not only provides a way to design and manufacture cathode materials for in situ electrosynthesis of H2O2, 2 O 2 , but also provides an important reference for improving the reusability of cathodes for sustainable dye wastewater treatment.
Effective degradation of methylene blue by a novel electrochemically driven process

Abstract:A new electrochemically driven process (E-peroxone) was developed to treat methylene blue (MB) wastewater. During the E-peroxone process, ozone generator effluent (O2 and O3 gas mixture) is continuously sparged into a reactor that has a carbon-polytetrafluorethylene (carbon-PTFE) cathode, which can electrochemically convert the sparged O2 to H2O2 effectively. The in situ generated H2O2 then reacts with the sparged O3 to produce hydroxyl radicals (OH), which are a much stronger oxidant than O3. Thus, by utilizing the sparged O2 that has little value in ozonation processes to produce H2O2 in situ, the E-peroxone process can achieve the synergy of O3 and H2O2 (peroxone) on pollutant degradation. The E-peroxone process therefore mineralized MB much more effectively than ozonation. The total organic carbon removal was 93 and 22% after 2h of the E-peroxone and ozonation treatment, respectively. The E-peroxone process may thus offer a simple and effective method to degrade ozone-refractory organic pollutants in wastewater.
A Novel Electrode for the Degradation of Methylene Blue in Electrochemical System: Preparation and Characterization

Abstract:Organic wastewater pollution control was one of the focus researches for environmental workers. In this study, high active electrode was made and hydrogen peroxide production via cathodic reduction of oxygen was studied, the H2O2 generated in the optimization of research and the effect of dye wastewater degradation under the typical conditions were explored. The effects of mass ratio between graphite and PTFE, Na2SO4 concentration, cathodic potential, pH and gas flow rate on hydrogen peroxide output were investigated. The optimized operational parameters were as follows: graphite and PTFE 5:1, pH=6, Na2SO4 concentration 0.5 mol/L, oxygen flow rate 450mL/min, and cathodic potential -1.2 V (vs SCE). Hydrogen peroxide concentration could reach 66.17 mg/L after 2h at optimized condition. Meanwhile, dye removal could reach about 70% at the same time. Therefore, the use of active electrode as cathode has shown promising prospect in dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The electrochemical oxidation of methylene blue (MB) wastewater assisted by Fe2O3-modified kaolin in a 200mL electrolytic batch reactor with graphite plate as electrodes was investigated. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of pH, current density and introduction of NaCl on the efficiency of the electrochemical degradation process were also studied. It was found that Fe2O3-modified kaolin has higher catalytic activity in the electrochemical degradation of MB wastewater. 96.47% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was obtained in 40min of electrochemical treatment of MB wastewater at pH 3, current density was equal to 69.23mAcm−2.

Abstract:The current research mostly focused on the single working electrode of anode for the treatment of wastewater. Therefore, a low-cost dual-electrode system using Ti/SnO 2 –Sb–Cu (TSSC) as the anode and Ti/ZnO/CuO (TZC) as the cathode was constructed for the synergistic treatment of methylene blue dye wastewater. Electrochemical analyses of the TSSC electrode show an ultra-high oxygen evolution potential of 2.2 V, the greater stability and the excellent corrosion resistance when compared with the traditional Ti/SnO 2 –Sb (TSS) electrodes. Hydroxyl radicals (•OH) are thought to be the main oxidants in the degradation process , the results show that the content of •OH of the TZC cathode is 57 % higher than that of ordinary inert electrode. Due to the synergistic effect of the two electrodes, the color of methylene blue can be quickly removed by 99 % in 20 min, and the highest chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate can reach 79.5 %. The optimal operation conditions were a pH of 4, a current density of 20 mA cm −2 and an initial concentration of 50 mg L −1 . Finally, the degradation pathway of MB was investigated using GC-MS technique and UV absorption spectroscopy. The results suggest that the large organic molecules are continuously cleaved to produce simple aromatic hydrocarbons, which are then destroyed to simple minor organic molecules, ultimately oxidized to CO 2 and H 2 O. This investigation suggests a new idea for the design of an efficient and cost-effective double electrode for the electrocatalytic degradation of dye wastewater.

Abstract:A novel sonoelectrochemical catalytic oxidation-driven process using a nanocoated electrode to treat methylene blue (MB) wastewater was developed. The nano-scale (nanocoated) electrode generated more hydroxyl radicals than non-nano-scale (non-nanocoated) electrodes did. However, hydroxyl radicals were easily adsorbed by the nanomaterial and thus were not able to enter the solution. Supersonic waves were found to enhance the mass-transfer effect on the nanocoated electrode surface, resulting in rapid diffusion of the generated hydroxyl radicals into the solution. In solution, the hydroxyl radicals then reacted with organic pollutants in the presence of ultrasonic waves. The effect of the nanocoated electrode on the MB wastewater treatment process was enhanced by ultrasound when compared to the non-nanocoated electrode used under the same conditions. The synergy of the nanocoated electrode and ultrasonic waves towards MB degradation was then studied. The optimum operating conditions resulted in a 92% removal efficiency for TOC and consisted of a current of 600 mA, an ultrasound frequency of 45 kHz, and a supersonic power of 250 W. The mechanism of ultrasound enhancement of the nanocoated electrode activity with respect to MB treatment is discussed. The reaction intermediates of the sonoelectrochemical catalytic oxidation process were monitored, and degradation pathways were proposed. The sonoelectrochemical catalytic oxidation-driven process using nanocoated electrodes was found to be a very efficient method for the treatment of non-biodegradable wastewater.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes are often applied to a variety of refractory wastewater, but rarely is the electro-Fenton process combined with the activated persulfate process applied to printing and dyeing wastewaters. In this study, we have delicately designed a new advanced oxidation process for the degradation of persistent pollutants in wastewater. The zero-valent iron (ZVI) activated peroxymonosulfate process coupled with an electro-Fenton (EF-PMS) oxidation process is applied to treat methylene blue (MB) wastewater. Its main advantage is to generate more reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduce the cost of oxidants. Experimentally, it was found that the degradation rate of the MB by the EF-PMS process was significantly higher than that before the coupling, and the mineralization rate can reach 56.84% within 2 h. According to free radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, the main ROS in the EF-PMS process were identified as ̇OH, SO 4 ̇ − and 1 O 2 , where free radical oxidation played an important role in the removal of MB, accounting for 70.39% of the total removal efficiency. The mechanism of ROS generation and action in the EF-PMS process was investigated, and the pathway of MB degradation was determined by the identification of intermediates. The EF-PMS process was also effective in degrading MB in different water quality backgrounds as well as for process reuse. The removal efficiency of other organic compounds was also evaluated. The results indicate that the EF-PMS process has good potential for application.

Abstract:For the paper industry, the disposal and management of the yielded sludge are a considerable challenge. In our work, the paper mill sludge-derived magnetically separable heterogeneous catalyst (PMS-Fe-380) was prepared easily through a facile synthesis method. The morphology and structure of PMS-Fe-380 were fully characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer–Emmet–Teller analysis. The catalytic activity of PMS-Fe-380 was evaluated by degradation of Methylene Blue (MB). The reusability and stability of PMS-Fe-380 were evaluated in five repeated runs, which suggested that PMS-Fe-380 manifested excellent stability of catalytic activity. Moreover, leaching tests indicated that the leached iron is negligible (<0.5mg/L). This study provides an alternative environmentally friendly reuse method for paper mill sludge and a novel catalyst PMS-Fe-380 that can be considered as a promising heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst.
Efficient Degradation of Methylene Blue in Industrial Wastewater and High Cycling Stability of Nano ZnO

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation research has attracted significant attention in the wake of the increasingly severe global challenge of water pollution. In this study, nano-ZnO was synthesized through a straightforward method using zinc acetate anhydrous as the precursor. The experimental results revealed that annealing conditions significantly influenced the bandgap energy (Eg) of ZnO, with a positive correlation observed between the intensity of photoluminescence (PL) spectra and photocatalytic activity. Under optimal annealing conditions at 300 °C for 1.5 h, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB) exceeded 98% within 40 min of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, surpassing the efficiencies reported for ZnO in recent studies. This high performance underscores the excellent photocatalytic activity of the synthesized ZnO samples. Furthermore, after five photocatalytic cycles, the degradation efficiency of MB remained above 90%, and the crystalline structure of the ZnO samples remained stable, demonstrating their exceptional structural stability during the photocatalytic process. Additionally, this study examined the effects of stirring conditions and different light sources on MB degradation, providing valuable insights for future research in related fields.

Abstract:In this study, a novel three-dimensional photoelectric system was designed and constructed for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) via photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photoelectric catalysis. To this end, a Ti/RuO 2 -IrO 2 -SnO 2 -CeO 2 electrode was prepared via a thermal oxidation coating method and used as a dimensionally-stable anode (DSA). The cathode was made of a titanium sheet with Fe 3+ -doped TiO 2 loaded on coal gasification slag (CGS) (Fe 3+ -TiO 2 @CGS) as a photocatalyst. The factors affecting the degradation efficiency, such as the supporting electrolyte, current density, and initial pH were systematically investigated. The results revealed Fe 3+ -TiO 2 @CGS three-dimensional photoelectric system exhibiting efficient synergistic performance of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis with a synergistic factor of 1.11. Photo-generated holes (h + ) were generated by light irradiation and direct anodic oxidation. Furthermore, hydroxyl radicals (HO·) radicals were induced via other pathways. Such active species showed highly-oxidizing abilities, beneficial to the degradation of methylene blue (MB). The representative Fe 3+ -TiO 2 @CGS three-dimensional photoelectric system showed super high degradation efficiency at pH 11 and current density of 18.76 mA cm −2 . Using NaCl as a supporting electrolyte, the degradation yield reached 99.98% after 60 min of photoelectrical treatment. Overall, the novel Fe 3+ -TiO 2 @CGS three-dimensional photoelectrical system looks very promising for the highly efficient catalytic degradation of organic contaminants.

Abstract:A facile and green route was introduced to synthesize Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs) immobilized on Cu2O octahedrons to form Cu2O-Pt hierarchical heterostructure. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were employed to study their morphology, chemical and crystallographic properties of the Cu2O-Pt hierarchical heterostructure. These novel Cu2O-Pt hierarchical heterostructures show fascinating degradations of methylene blue (MB), due to the suppressed electron/hole recombination phenomena and the efficient ability to capture the light.

Abstract:In this study, two typical refractory organic pollutants, methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline (TC) was effectively degraded under visible-light irradiation catalyzed by Zn/Fe mixed metal oxide (Zn/Fe-MMO) nanocomposite, which derived from the high-temperature calcination of Zn/Fe layered double hydroxide (Zn/Fe-LDH). The Zn/Fe-MMO was composed of wurzite ZnO phases and spinel-structured ZnFe2O4. The Zn/Fe-MMO exhibited superior photocatalytic activity than Zn/Fe-LDH precursor owing to the better crystallinity, broader visible light adsorption, and higher photo-generated electron-hole pairs separation efficiency. Simple assembling method, high photocatalytic activity to the degradation of organic pollutants and good reusability make Zn/Fe-MMO has great potential in practical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this research, the treatment of methylene blue (MB) dye wastewater by a novel system that combines H2O2 with an aluminum-carbon micro-electrolysis (ACE) was explored. The effects of the H2O2 amount, initial pH, aluminum to carbon ratio, total aluminum-carbon mass, dye concentration, and reaction temperature on degradation of MB were investigated. The findings revealed that under the following conditions: H2O2 34.0 mg/L, initial pH of 3.0, aluminum-to-carbon ratio of 2:1, total aluminum-carbon mass of 2.0 g/L, MB concentration of 20 mg/L, and 20 °C, the degradation rate of MB could reach 99.3% after 180 min, which is 18.4% more compared with ACE at the same conditions without H2O2. Through the quenching experiments, it was proved that the efficient free radicals produced during degradation are •OH and •O2-. Finally, a possible mechanism of H2O2 enhanced aluminum carbon micro-electrolysis (HP-ACE) for MB degradation was discussed.

Abstract:Effective treatment of dye wastewater is currently a great concern and a research hotspot. Electrocatalysis has unique advantages in treating toxic and harmful refractory dye wastewater; however, it requires an external power supply, which increases energy consumption and cost. As a new energy collection technology, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have gained considerable attention. In this study, an origami multilayer spherical friction nanogenerator (Q-TENG) was developed for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from dye wastewater. The current and voltage output performances of Q-TENG were explored, and the removal and degradation mechanisms of MB were discussed. Results indicated that when the water wave acceleration a = 3 m/s2, the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current reached the maximum values of 179 V and 9.4 μA, respectively. The self-powered catalytic degradation of MB using Q-TENG can produce more •OH and SO4-•, and the free radicals increase with increasing action time of Q-TENG, thus increasing the degradation efficiency of MB. This study provides a new strategy for solving the problem of high energy consumption during electrochemical reactions in wastewater treatment.
Ag-Cu2O composite films with enhanced photocatalytic activities for methylene blue degradation: Analysis of the mechanism and the degradation pathways

Abstract:As refractory organic pollutants, dyes have caused widespread concern about their pollution of water environments. The development of visible light responsive catalysts with high catalytic activity is of great significance for the removal of organic pollutants using sunlight as a light source. Ag-Cu2O composite film was prepared by the electrochemical deposition and a redox reaction. The influence of Ag on the microstructure and performance of the Cu2O was investigated by physical and chemical characterization. Results show that compared with the single-layer Cu2O film, the Ag-Cu2O composite film shows good visible light absorption performance. The carrier concentration, photocurrent and open-circuit voltage are all increased, and the photogenerated electron and hole transfer and separation efficiency are effectively improved. Degradation experiments show that the Ag-Cu2O exhibits good photocatalytic performance, and that the degradation rate of methylene blue reaches over 95.1%. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Cu2O is primarily due to the efficient separation and transfer system of the photogenerated charge from Cu2O to Ag and the increased visible-light absorption ability; thus the composite film exhibits a synergistic effect. Experiments for detecting the active substances show that hydroxyl radical and hole play a leading role in methylene blue degradation. Methylene blue begins to be degraded under the action of the photogenerated holes and hydroxyl radicals. Based on the analysis of experimental data and combined with the theoretical calculation, two possible degradation pathways of methylene blue are proposed. This work presents a new idea for studying the mechanism and pathway of the degradation of methylene blue with an Ag-Cu2O and provides a new opportunity for the use of semiconductor photocatalytic oxidation technology to remove organic dyes in wastewater

Abstract:With the acceleration of industrialization, the removal of refractory organic dyes from water and how to promote its practical application remains a challenge. Herein, we synthesized an FeCo-LDH/LI-NDG composite electrode material by a simple laser-induced technique on polyimide films, which could electrocatalytically activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to completely degrade MB in about 6 min. The reaction rate constant (kobs) was 0.461 min−1. It was faster than most of the currently reported electrocatalysts. The reaction system demonstrated good interference resistance and catalytic effectiveness in the pH range of 3 to 9. According to the chemical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments, the non-radical pathway of 1O2 and the radical pathways of SO4·−, ·OH and O2·− were involved in the reaction synergistically, with 1O2 playing the dominant role. 1O2 was produced through the dual pathway of PMS electron loss at the anode and O2·− intermediate transformation at the cathode. The two activation methods of electro-activation and catalytic activation of PMS had synergistic effects to achieve high efficiency in the whole process of production, reaction and recovery, providing new ideas to advance practical applications.

Abstract:FeOx-MoO3-P2O5 (x=1 or 1.5) composite catalyst was prepared by solid reaction method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Its catalytic activities on degradation of a heteropolyaromatic dye, methylene blue (MB), were also investigated under mild condition. In order to determine the optimum operating condition, the orthogonal experiments were devised. And the results revealed that initial concentration of MB was the key factor that affected the decoloration, while the catalysts dose has an insignificant effect. Environmental estimation was also done and the results showed that the treated wastewater have little influence on plant growth and could totally be applied to irrigation.

Abstract:In this work, the combination of two advanced oxidation processes, electro-Fenton (hydroxyl radical ●OH generated by reactions on cathode) and anodic oxidation (●OH produced directly on anode), in the same reactor was studied to evaluate the treatment of methylene blue (MB) dye in aqueous solutions. This electrochemical system was equipped with a commercial carbon felt cathode (9.5cm 12cm), lead dioxide-coated titanium anode (10 12cm), direct current (DC) and continuously aerated. The effects of operating parameters such as pH, applied current (I), catalyst concentration ([Fe2+]) and MB concentration (C0) on MB removal efficiency were investigated through monitoring MB concentration at different times by spectrophotometric method. An optimal process was achieved at the condition of [Fe2+] = 0.1 mM; pH 3.0; [Na2SO4] = 0.05 M; i = 2.5 mA.cm-2 and after 60 minutes of electrolysis, 92.19% of MB was removed which was far higher than the figure obtained by using individually electro-Fenton (73.77%) or anodic oxidation (58.04%). These experimental results have demonstrated that the combination of electro-Fenton and anodic oxidation using Ti/PbO2 electrode is a prospective method for destruction of persistent dyes.

Multivariate optimization of methylene blue dye degradation using electro-Fenton process with self-doped TiO2 nanotube anode

Abstract:This paper reports the optimization of the electro-Fenton (EF) process using different anode materials for the degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) dye as a model compound. The cathode used was an air-diffusion PTFE, while three different anode materials (Pt, DSA, and self-doped TiO2 nanotubes - SD-TNT) were tested individually. A full factorial design (FFD) with a central point combined with response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the experimental variables, including solution pH, applied current, and anode material. The optimized EF conditions involved a pH of 4.0, a current of 100 mA, and an SD-TNT anode for 120 min of electrolysis. Under these conditions, the MB solution achieved complete decolorization and 45% of total organic carbon (TOC) removal after 120 min of EF treatment. The findings indicate that the hydroxyl radical (•OH) plays a crucial role as the primary oxidizing agent in the EF process. The decay of MB followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, reflecting a consistent formation of •OH radicals that effectively attacked the MB dye and its subproducts during mineralization. Moreover, the EF process exhibited superior performance in terms of energy consumption (EC) and mineralization current efficiency (ECM) in the initial treatment stages, while the presence of recalcitrant by-products and loss of anode self-doping impacted performance in the later stages. The optimized EF conditions and the understanding gained from this study contribute to the advancement of sustainable wastewater treatment strategies for the removal of organic dyes.
