Progress in meningococcal conjugate vaccine development and use

Abstract:Neisseria meningitidis, a gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the nasopharynx, is part of the normal respiratory microbiome in most healthy individuals. However, five of the 13 known serogroups (A, B, C, W and Y based on capsule classification) cause the great majority of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), an acute and very serious condition with a 10-15% mortality rate and long-term impairment in 20% of cases. The onset of IMD can be very rapid, and there is a considerable risk of sepsis and death within a short timeframe.
