Abstract:The morphological characteristics of the active layer in organic solar cells (OSCs), encompassing phase separation structure, domain sizes, crystallinity and molecular orientation play a pivotal role in governing the photoelectric conversion processes. Notably, molecular orientation holds paramount significance as it exerts influence over key aspects such as light absorption, exciton dissociation, charge transport, and collection. Thus, a comprehensive comprehension of the impact of molecular orientation on the photophysical processes and strategies for regulating molecular orientation is imperative. This discussion delves into the influence of molecular orientation on the power conversion process, encompassing aspects such as donor and acceptor energy alignment, the efficiency of exciton dissociation, and charge transport. Additionally, a thorough analysis of the control of molecular orientation, incorporating molecular design and physical means, is undertaken, elucidating the underlying principles. Finally, the discourse concludes with an exploration of challenges and prospects associated with the advancement of OSCs.

Abstract:Abstract Nonfullerene small‐molecule acceptors (SMAs) are considered as a key component of next‐generation organic photovoltaics. Introducing functional groups to the end‐groups of “acceptor‐donor‐acceptor”‐type SMAs is a facile and convenient way to tune their optoelectronic and morphological properties. Here, molecular dynamics simulations are combined with long‐range corrected density functional theory calculations to explore the molecular‐scale impact that the position of methoxy substitution in the end‐group has on the molecular packing and electron‐transfer properties in neat films. The focus here is on 3,9‐bis(2‐methylene‐(3‐(1,1‐dicyanomethylene)‐indanone))‐5,5,11,11‐tetrakis(4‐hexylphenyl)‐dithieno [2,3‐ d :2′,3′‐ d ′]‐s‐indaceno[1,2‐ b :5,6‐ b ′]dithiophene (IT‐OM), where three end‐group methoxy substitution positions are evaluated. Changing the methoxy substitution position is found to influence, to different extents, the planarity of the end‐groups and thus the intermolecular packing density. The effect on the intermolecular electron‐transfer rates is also examined and leads to markedly different sizes of strongly interconnected clusters. Overall, these findings are fully consistent with the experimental evolution of electron mobility in the neat IT‐OM film as a function of methoxy substitution position.

Abstract:Organic micro/nanocrystals based on small organic molecules have drawn extensive attention due to their potential application in organic field-effect transistors, electrochemical sensors, solar cells, etc. Herein, the recent advances for organic micro/nanocrystals from the perspective of molecule aggregation mode, morphology modulation, and optical property modulation are reviewed. The stacking mode and the intermolecular interaction depend on the molecular structure, which eventually determines the morphology of organic micro/nanocrystals. The morphologies of the organic micro/nanocrystals make the aggregates exhibit photon confinement or light-guiding properties as organic miniaturized optoelectronic devices. In this review, we conclude with a summary and put forward our perspective on the current challenges and the future development of morphology and optical tunable direction for the organic micro/nanocrystals.

Abstract:Increasing horizontal and face‐on orientations of the active molecules in organic solar cells is critical to improve light absorption, charge mobility, and exciton diffusivity for high photovoltaic efficiency. However, how to effectively control the molecular orientations is challenging and still unclear. Here, the molecular self‐assembly and orientation formation are elucidated for a series of acceptor–donor–acceptor (A–D–A) small‐molecule acceptors (SMAs) by atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that the A–D–A molecules tend to assemble via the end‐group π–π stacking at the liquid–vapor interfaces during solvent evaporation, which is beneficial to enhance horizontal and face‐on orientations. Remarkably, the order of both horizontal and face‐on orientations in the films shows a good linear correlation with the number of π–π stacking among all the A–D–A SMAs. The π–π stacking is found to be cooperatively controlled by both the end‐group π–π interaction and side‐chain steric hindrance. This work provides the rationalization for the different molecular orientations in a wide range of A–D–A SMAs and is useful to improve the horizontal and face‐on orientations for high‐performance organic photovoltaics. The molecular self‐assembly and orientation formation processes are revealed by atomistic molecular dynamics simulations for a series of A–D–A electron acceptors for organic solar cells. Abstract:Efficient charge transport is a key step toward high efficiency in small-Molecule organic photovoltaics. Here we applied time-of-flight and organic field-effect transistor to complementarily study the influences of molecular structure, trap states, and molecular orientation on charge transport of small-molecule DRCN7T (D1) and its analogue DERHD7T (D2). It is revealed that, despite the subtle difference of the chemical structures, D1 exhibits higher charge mobility, the absence of shallow traps, and better photosensitivity than D2. Moreover, charge transport is favored in the out-of-plane structure within D1-based organic solar cells, while D2 prefers in-plane charge transport.

Abstract:Nonfullerene acceptors have recently emerged as promising candidates for organic photovoltaics (OPVs) owing to their superior optoelectronic properties. However, the varied lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of the acceptors pose difficulty in aligning their energy levels with existing electron transporting layers (ETLs). The authors propose here a facile design of the ETL with a tunable work function by simply varying the annealing temperature of titanium diisopropoxide bis(acetylacetonate) (TIAA) to change the molecular structure of the titanium complex. The energy level tuning is realized without changing the morphological features of the active layer, and as a result, it can enhance the charge extraction efficiency and thus ultimately the power conversion efficiency of the nonfullerene OPV. Our design will provide new important insights for achieving efficient nonfullerene OPVs.

Abstract:This study revealed the thermodynamic and kinetic factors for regulating molecular orientation. From a thermodynamic aspect, the crystallinity of solid additive, the lattice matching degree, and miscibility between DRCN5T and solid additive are very important. In terms of kinetics, the diffusivity of DRCN5T should be proper to ensure its heterogeneous nucleation during the crystallization process. The molecular orientation has a profound influence on the performance of organic solar cells. Both donor and acceptor adopt face‐on orientation guarantees efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport, which is a key to achieving high device performance. However, the molecules usually adopt edge‐on orientation in some blend systems, take small molecules based on an oligothiophene (DRCN5T): fused‐ring electron acceptor based on indacenodithieno[3,2‐b]‐thiophene core and thienyl side‐chains (ITIC‐Th) blend, for instance, the orientation of DRCN5T is edge‐on, which is detrimental to the photophysical process of the device. Herein, a solid additive strategy, that is, adding N2200 as a nucleus for DRCN5T, was proposed, which combined the nucleation process with molecular diffusivity, thus realizing the orientation transformation of DRCN5T from edge‐on to face‐on. Consequently, the device performance was significantly improved, and a clear relationship between molecular orientation and energy loss/biomolecular recombination was established. More importantly, this study revealed not only the thermodynamic factors, including the crystallinity of solid additive, the lattice matching degree, and miscibility between DRCN5T and solid additive but also the kinetic parameter, such as the diffusivity of DRCN5T are very important to efficiently regulate the molecular orientation. Overall, this study presents the in‐depth mechanism of orientation transformation via adding solid additives, which may provide a guideline for solid additive choices.

Abstract:Recently, solution-processed organic solar cells combining small-molecule donor and nonfullerene acceptor have achieved breakthrough results with the certified efficiency over 15%. These impressive progresses are driven by the concerted efforts of modifying the donor and acceptor materials and optimizing the morphology. Considering the defined chemical structures and easily tuned properties of small-molecule materials, it is of great necessity and importance to pay more attentions on the topic of all-small molecule organic solar cells. Here, we summarize the recent progress of all-small molecule organic solar cells from the prospect of materials' evolutions and expect to provide some hints for its future developments. The involved small-molecule donors including oligothiophene-, benzodithiophene-, naphthodithiophene-, and porphyrin-based materials are discussed to illustrate the relationship of chemical structures, properties, and device performance. Then, the small-molecule nonfullerene acceptors in all-small molecules organic solar cells are discussed to highlight their vital role. Finally, we will present the challenges and future of this research area.

Abstract:Organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) are a promising cost-effective alternative to silicon-based solar cells, and possess light-weight, low-cost, and flexibility advantages. Significant progress has been achieved in the development of novel photovoltaic materials and device structures in the last decade. Nowadays small molecular semiconductors for OPVs have attracted considerable attention, due to their advantages over their polymer counterparts, including well-defined molecular structure, definite molecular weight, and high purity without batch to batch variations. The highest power conversion efficiencies of OPVs based on small molecular donor/fullerene acceptors or polymeric donor/fullerene acceptors are up to 6.7% and 8.3%, respectively, and meanwhile nonfullerene acceptors have also exhibited some promising results. In this review we summarize the developments in small molecular donors, acceptors (fullerene derivatives and nonfullerene molecules), and donor-acceptor dyad systems for high-performance multilayer, bulk heterojunction, and single-component OPVs. We focus on correlations of molecular chemical structures with properties, such as absorption, energy levels, charge mobilities, and photovoltaic performances. This structure-property relationship analysis may guide rational structural design and evaluation of photovoltaic materials (253 references).

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have great potential for future application. However, the commercialization of PSCs is limited by the prohibitively expensive and doped hole-transport materials (HTMs). In this regard, small molecular dopant-free HTMs are promising alternatives because of their low cost and high efficiency. However, these HTMs still have a lot of space for making further progress in both efficiency and stability. This review firstly provides outlining analyses about the important roles of molecular orientation when further enhancements in device efficiency and stability are concerned. Then, currently studied strategies to control molecular orientation in small molecular HTMs are presented. Finally, we propose an outlook aiming to obtain optimized molecular orientation in a cost-effective way.

Abstract:Control over the molecular orientation of organic semiconductors with respect to the substrate plays a critical role in determining the performance of organic electronic devices. In this work, three ladder-type heteroheptacene-based small molecules with branched or unbranched side chains flanked in different positions of their conjugated backbone (M11, M12, and M13), were designed and synthesized to investigate the effect of side-chains on the crystallinity, molecular orientation, and optoelectronic properties of the organic semiconductors. When linear n-dodecyl side-chains are attached to the nitrogen atoms of the heteroheptacene core, the resulting molecule (M11) exhibits high crystallinity and edge-on molecular orientation, thus leading to excellent horizontal charge transport with a field-effect transistor (FET) mobility of 3.95 × 10−2 cm2 V−1 s−1. Replacing the linear n-dodecyl chains on the nitrogen atoms with the branched 2-butyloctyl chains leads to the organic semiconductors (M12 and M13) with the face-on dominated molecular orientation thereby leading to two orders of magnitude enhancement in the vertical charge transport in comparison with M11. Consequently, M12 and M13 show much higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 11.55% and 13.14%, respectively, compared to M11 which exhibits a PCE of 2.26% under the same device fabrication conditions. Optimization on the M13-based solar cells yields a further improved PCE of 15.63% which is among the highest values for the A-D-A type nonfullerene acceptors. The results reported in this work highlight that modulating the molecular orientation of organic semiconductors is a highly effective molecular design strategy to boost the performance of optoelectronic devices, thus also providing new insights into the molecular design guidelines for the next generation of high-performance semiconductors for the FET and photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:Crystal orientation in organic thin films is one of the key parameters that determine absorption cross‐section, interfacial energetics and excitonic states, and free charge properties. In this work, monolayer graphene is used to direct the crystal orientation of selected planar organic molecules. Lying‐down orientation with π‐stacking normal to the surface is achieved with graphene templating. The absorption spectra of the graphene‐templated films are correlated to molecular orientation. The same set of absorption features with or without graphene suggests that no vibronic states are forbidden or newly introduced. However, the light absorption with graphene templating is enhanced due to the altered relative orientation between the transition dipole moment of the constituent molecules and the electric field of incident light. The energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of graphene templated p‐type films is observed at a deeper‐lying value (relative to vacuum) compared to untemplated diindenoperylene films grown on indium tin oxide. In contrast, the HOMO energy levels of graphene templated n‐type films are observed at higher‐lying energy levels (relative to vacuum) compared to the respective untemplated films due to surface dipoles. Such a change can potentially increase the theoretical V oc expected for photovoltaic devices incorporating these templated films. It is reported that graphene template layers can adjust the orientation of selected organic molecules in thin films. Significant optical and electronic ramifications of directed growth are observed. The energy level shifts upon graphene templating show that n‐type materials behave in an opposite manner to p‐type materials, which is explained using calculated electrostatic potential energy surfaces.

Abstract:A "face-on" molecular orientation is essential for photovoltaic materials with efficient vertical carrier transport, but understanding how the molecular structures control their orientations remains challenging. Based on a ladder-type fused-ring core without sp3-hybridized bridging atoms, novel acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A or ADA)-type nonfullerene acceptors (M3 and M32) are developed, and their molecular orientation behaviors are successfully controlled by the neighboring side chains. With linear n-cetyl chains on the nitrogen atoms, the acceptor (M32) tends to adopt an "edge-on" molecular orientation, whereas with bulky branched 2-hexyldecyl chains, the acceptor (M3) has a preferred "face-on" orientation. Blended with a donor polymer of PM6, M3 shows optimal phase separation and dramatically improved electron transport, consequently leading to a much higher device performance than M32. Further optimization of the M3-based devices yields an outstanding efficiency of 16.66%. The strategy of molecular orientation control proposed here will inspire many other innovative designs and syntheses of high-performance nonfullerene acceptors.

Abstract:Control over the morphology in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaics (OPVs) remains a key issue in improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE), despite the performance advances in recent years. This review summarizes the morphological features and guiding strategies of OPV blends spanning fullerene blends, non-fullerene blends, and all-polymer systems. The crystallization and liquid–liquid (L-L) demixing of materials, including donors and acceptors, are in competition to form the morphology across multiple length scales. Its character can be manipulated by controlling the kinetics and thermodynamics in film drying processes and post-treatments, affording appropriate phase separation and interfaces to promote charge generation and transport. The structure–property relationships constructed based on pivotal characterization techniques are discussed and future perspectives are provided.

Abstract:The relationship between the nanomorphology and the charge transport characteristics in solution-processed organic thin films has been the focus of extensive research, as it is key to the further advancement of organic photovoltaics. Understanding the nanostructured domains and their dependence on the applied thermal annealing conditions is one crucial challenge. Here, the conjugated small-molecule donor p-DTS(FBTTh2)2 is used as a model system to demonstrate how isothermal annealing alone, without addition of any processable additives during solution casting, leads to a high ordering of domain structures. Using scanning transmission X-ray microspectroscopy (STXM), the domain structures are probed at the resonance energy of 284.7 eV corresponding to the C1s to Pi* transition. The STXM data analysis reveals the in-plane orientation of the conjugated backbone comprising the heterocyclic aromatic compounds dithienosilole (DTS), bithiophene (BT), and fluorobenzothiadiazole (FBT). The analysis further exhibits the presence of ordered domains accompanied by the disordered boundaries in thin films where the increase in the domain sizes and the high degree of molecular order (anisotropy) is associated to the relatively slow crystallization dynamics of p-DTS(FBTTh2)2 molecules during isothermal annealing at 90 °C. The analysis of the out-of-plane component of the directed resonance intensity shows deviations in the local out-of-plane tilt angles to the lower values, for the most ordered regions in the thin film, suggesting the more out-of-plane orientation of Pi* resonance. These results manifest a promising role of STXM technique in enhancing the knowledge of domain structures in small molecule organic semiconductors.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) can directly convert the sunlight into electrical energy and present some advantages, such as low cost, light weight, flexibility, semitransparency, and roll‐to‐roll large‐area fabrication. Due to the short diffusion length of exciton (≈10 nm) in organic semiconductor materials, the ideal nanoscale phase separation in the active layer is one of the crucial factors for achieving efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport. The morphology of the active layer is mainly determined by the nature of donors and acceptors (e.g., solubility, crystallinity, and miscibility), the film processing, the device configuration, and so on. In general, it is very hard to obtain ideal morphology in the as‐cast films. Therefore, it is usually essential to take measures to achieve the active layer with good molecular stacking, proper domain size, high domain purity, and suitable vertical phase separation. In this review, recent developments in morphology control and morphology characterization are summarized and analyzed. This review might help the community to decipher active layer morphology at multiple length scales and to achieve ideal morphology toward high‐performance OSCs. Morphology of the bulk heterojunction organic solar cells is very important but very complicated. This review summarizes and discusses morphology characterization as well as morphology control.

Abstract:Organic photovoltaics based on polymer blends have the potential for flexible solar cells with superior mechanical and thermal resiliency. Recently, regioregular polymerized small molecule acceptors (PSMAs) are synthesized and utilized as active acceptor materials to achieve record-breaking all-polymer solar cells with power conversion efficiency approaching 20%. The reported experimental studies showed a systematic correlation between polymerization sites and the properties of the PSMA, where one of the regioisomers (namely, γ-PSMA) displays more favorable optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties compared to the other (δ-PSMA). However, these experimental observations have not been rationalized yet. Here, we used first-principles calculations to reveal that the substituents on the cross-conjugated terminal unit of the SMA core are responsible for improving the optoelectronic properties of γ-PSMAs, by extending the conjugation length and enhancing favorable mesomeric effects. Importantly, we demonstrate that these effects can be exploited as a universal molecular design principle, and we predict that functionalizing PSMAs in selected positions with electron-withdrawing groups can further improve their optoelectronic properties. Our study provides a quantitative framework for understanding and rationalizing the relationship between polymerization sites and optoelectronic properties in regioregular PSMAs; in addition, our results pave the way for a rational design principle to further improve the properties of these conjugated polymers and, in turn, the efficiency of all-polymer solar cells.
