Abstract:Pickering interfacial catalysis provides an excellent platform for biphasic reactions, but the separation and recycling of nanocatalysts is a challenge because of high adsorption energy of nanocatalysts at the liquid-liquid interface. In this work, we represent a new type of versatile Pickering emulsion based on magnetic and CO2-responsive nanohybrids Fe3O4@SiO2@P(TMA-DEA). The smart nanoparticles can stabilize the water-in-oil Pickering emulsion in the biphasic system and achieve the subsequent demulsification by bubbling CO2 ascribed to their reversible switching surface. In the absence of energy barrier, the nanohybrids can be easily captured in situ by magnetic field in 2 min and showed excellent recyclability. In the Anelli system for alcohol oxidation, the nanocatalyst exhibited threefold enhancement in catalytic efficiency in comparison with an unemulsified two-phase and little loss on activity after five cycles. The conceptually novel dual-responsive system offers a green and energy-saving strategy for effective recycling of the nanocatalyst and intensification of biphasic reaction.
Enhanced Interfacial Interaction of Mesoporous N, S Co-Doped Carbon Supported WO3-WS2 for Green and Selective Oxidation of Alcohols

Abstract:WO3-WS2 supported on mesoporous N, S co-doped carbon were prepared via one-step molten-salt strategy, and an enhanced interfacial interaction between metal and carbon was formed, which boosted the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. Under green conditions (solvent: H2O, oxidant: H2O2, no base-additives), 96.2 % conversion and 97.0 % selectivity were achieved within 2 h. It was found that N, S co-doped carbon with abundant mesopores served as an excellent support, the pyrrolic and graphitic N species of carbon provided main anchoring sites for metal nanoparticles. Additionally, the N, S co-doped carbon support could effectively promote the distribution of metal species, and thereafter induced the formation of metal-carbon interfacial interaction. Such advantages resulted in the satisfactory reusability (negligible activity loss after six cycles) and remarkable catalytic activity. The scavenger tests and EPR results disclosed that center dot OH was the main oxidative species for this reaction. DFT calculations revealed that co-doping of N, S into carbon promoted the adsorption of benzyl alcohol, and the enhanced metal-carbon interaction reduced migration energy barrier of center dot OH on catalyst surface. In sum, this work provided some new insights into the interfacial interaction of mesoporous carbon supported metal catalyst for boosting the selective oxidation of alcohols.
Enhanced Performance of Binary WO3/N-doped Carbon Composites for the Catalytic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol under Mild Conditions

Abstract:In this work, a series of N-doped carbon supported WO3 composite catalysts were successfully prepared via a hydrothermal and subsequent calcination method. The obtained WO3/N-doped carbon composites outperformed the bare WO3 and bare N-doped carbon for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde under mild and green reaction conditions (no base additives, water as solvent, and H2O2 as oxidant). It was found that the superior catalytic performance could be ascribed to the synergistic effect and strong interaction between WO3 and N-doped carbon among the composites. N-doped carbon impeded the aggregation of WO3 nanoparticles, and the graphitic and pyrrolic N species of N-doped carbon might provide main active sites for the immobilization of WO3 nanoparticles. Under the optimum reaction conditions, the yield of benzaldehyde was achieved as 94.6% within 4 h. The recycling test indicated that the catalyst could be reused for seven times without obvious activity loss. Besides, a possible reaction mechanism for this transformation was proposed. This work might give some insights into the design of heterogeneous composite catalysts for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol under mild conditions.

Abstract:Cross-linked polymer particles were prepared via surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization of 2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) and sodium methacrylate (SMA) using N,N'-methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBA) as a cross-linker. Generated particles are zwitterionic, possessing unique isoelectric points in the pH range of 7.5-8.0, which is readily tunable through CO2/N2 bubbling. The particles were found to be highly responsive to CO2/N2 switching, dissolving in water with CO2 bubbling and precipitating with N2 bubbling at room temperature. Pickering emulsions of n-dodecane were prepared using these particles as the sole emulsifier. These emulsions can be rapidly demulsified with CO2 bubbling, resulting in complete oil/water phase separations. Nitrogen bubbling efficiently re-emulsifies the oil with the aid of homogenization. The rapid emulsification/demulsification using CO2/N2 bubbling at room temperature provides these cross-linked zwitterionic particles with distinct advantages as functional Pickering surfactants.
Reclamation Of Acid Pickling Waste: Preparation Of Nano Alpha-Fe2o3 And Its Catalytic Performance

Abstract:Nano alpha-Fe2O3 materials with various size and morphology were prepared from acid pickling waste using nonionic surfactant polyethylene glycol (PEG-400) as dispersant and ultrasonic enhancement, as proved by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UVvis, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), respectively. The results showed that high purity (96.89%) alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were well-crystallized with different size and morphology, mainly including a web-like structure linked by about 25 nm spherical particles (Fe-w), a nanorod with about a 45 nm width diameter (Fe-r), and daylily bud-like materials with a 50 nm width leaf (Fe-l). The Fe-w, as well as other nanosized alpha-Fe2O3, was found to be very active for benzylation of aromatics by benzyl chloride, exhibiting turn over frequency (TOF) of 35.2 h(-1) for anisole, 65.1 h(-1) for aniline, 33.3 h(-1) for phenol, and 1776 h(-1) for benzene, respectively. The catalyst could be recycled at least three times without appreciable loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract:An environmentally benign oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and metal dodecanesulfonate salts as catalysts was conducted under solvent-free condition by biphasic catalysis. Ferric tridodecanesulfonate showed excellent catalytic activity exhibiting complete conversion of benzyl alcohol with 194.4mol/molcat turnover number (TON) and nearly 100% selectivity to benzaldehyde at ambient pressure and 90°C. This catalyst can be recovered and reused for three times without a significant loss in its activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Iron-chloride immobilized ionic liquid (SIL-FeCl3) was prepared by N-methylimidazole reacting with chloropropylsilane linked on the mesoporous silica SBA-15 and coordinating of FeCl3 to the imidazolium chloride grafted on the surface, as proved by XRD, TEM, NMR, FT-IR, ICP–MS, UV–vis and N2 adsorption–desorption technique. The results showed that the supported FeCl3 species were mainly distributed on the surface with the nonuniform distribution and the coordination linkage of imidazole ring to FeCl3 was stronger enough to keep its not leaching from the surface. The SIL-FeCl3 was demonstrated to be an efficient catalyst for a solvent-free oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde (BzH) using H2O2 as oxidant, exhibiting high TON (125.8mol/molFe). The novelty of the manuscript is based on the distribution of iron species on the surface detected by TEM and EDX and the higher catalytic activity of the catalyst for effective oxidation of alcohol under solvent-free condition The catalyst can be easily recovered and effectively reused without a significant loss in its activity and selectivity, which would lead to its potential application foreground for environmental friendly synthesis of chlorine-free BzH.

Abstract:Water is increasingly being used as a solvent in place of organic solvent in order to meet the demand for green chemical synthesis. Nevertheless, many of the reaction substrates are organic matter, which have low water solubility, resulting in a low reaction interface and limiting the development of organic-water biphasic systems. A surfactant is typically added to the two-phase system to form an emulsion to increase the contact area between the organic phase and the water. Compared to ordinary emulsion stabilized with the surfactant, Pickering emulsion offers better adhesion resistance, biocompatibility, and environmental friendliness. It possesses unrivaled benefits as an emulsifier and catalyst in a two-phase interfacial catalysis system (PIC). In this study, the amine group (NNDB) was employed to alter the surface of graphene oxide (GO). A stable Pickering emulsion was created by adsorbing GO-NNDB on the toluene–water interface. It was determined that the emulsion system had good stability by analyzing digital photographs and microscope images of droplets at various temperatures, and fluorescence microscopy images of emulsion droplets created by both newly added and recovered emulsifiers. This work provided the groundwork for future applications of Pickering emulsion in interfacial catalysis.

Abstract:Pickering interfacial catalysis enables oil/water biphasic reactions to efficiently proceed by the formation of stable Pickering emulsions. However, a convenient approach to control the emulsion properties, so as to combine the reactivity and recovery of catalytic emulsifiers, remains challenging to date. Herein, we have reported the switchable transition between emulsification/demulsification controlled by the catalytic reaction process, to realize reaction-controlled Pickering interfacial catalysis. A novel series of phosphotungstate (PW)-functionalized mesoporous Janus silica nanosheets were thus prepared by selectively decorating ammonium PW on one side of mesosilica nanosheets. Characterization results suggested their H2O2-switched reversible emulsification/demulsification behavior in an oil/water biphasic system due to H2O2-induced wettability change in the ammonium PW moiety. The resultant H2O2-switchable Pickering emulsions induced an efficient Pickering interfacial catalysis approach for selective oxidation of alcohols by aqueous H2O2 in water, thus leading to remarkable high conversion and selectivity over a wide range of alcohols. When H2O2 was used up, they could be demulsified spontaneously, resulting in the complete separation of catalytic emulsifiers for steady reuse. The reaction-controlled emulsification/demulsification approach provided a sustainable way to combine reactivity and recovery of catalytic emulsifiers in Pickering interfacial catalysis, which was a benefit for energy-saving in industrial applications.The switchable transition between emulsification/demulsification controlled by the catalytic reaction process was reported. Abstract:The utilization of Pickering emulsions in interfacial catalysis offers a promising environmental platform for biphasic reactions. However, complicated surface coating or chemical grafting methods are always required to prepare the surface-active catalysts for the Pickering emulsions, since most of them are commercially unavailable. Here, we report CO2-switchable Pickering emulsions for biphasic reactions, in which Pd@Al2O3 nanoparticles are in situ modified by a CO2/N2 responsive surfactant. Compared with the chemical grafted methods, the in situ formed Pickering interfacial catalysts avoid complex chemical modification. Furthermore, efficient demulsification and separation of the oil phase and the products without surfactant contaminations can be achieved by CO2 trigger. The Pickering interfacial catalysis system can also be reformed after the aqueous phase containing the catalyst nanoparticles, and the surfactant is recycled and reused. The strategy is universal for nitrobenzene reductions and alcohol oxidations, providing a convenient and green method for the preparation of Pickering catalysts with commercially available nanoparticles, efficient emulsion separation, and recovery of the catalyst nanoparticles and emulsifiers in various two-phase organic reactions.
Thermoresponsive Polymeric Nanoparticles as Efficient Pickering Interfacial Catalysts for Selective Oxidation of Sulfides

Abstract:Pickering emulsions provide a versatile platform for liquid–liquid two-phase reactions; however, the separation and recovery of solid catalysts have always been plagued by strong adsorption at the interfaces. In this study, we developed thermoresponsive polymeric nanoparticles by simply copolymerizing the monomers of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl methacrylate (TMPM) and oxidizing the precursor to 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO). Structural design and molecular modulation give the polymeric catalysts excellent amphiphilicity, which allows them to be tightly adsorbed at the interfaces, thus stabilizing oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions in biphasic reaction systems. Such emulsion systems with abundant interfacial areas can enhance reaction mass transfer and promote catalytic transformation. More importantly, modulating the wettability of the polymers leads to an oriented distribution of the catalysts at the interfaces, which in turn affects the contact between the substrate molecules and catalyst centers, avoiding overoxidation of the sulfides and improving the selectivity of sulfoxides. As expected, the selectivity of methyl phenyl sulfoxide in Pickering emulsion microreactors was 97.8% with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 10.0 mol mol–1 min–1, which is higher than previously reported results. When the systems warm to 37 °C at the end of the reactions, the amine groups of NIPAM immobilized on the polymer catalysts shrink, causing the particles to become hydrophobic and thus spontaneously desorbed from the interfaces, resulting in demulsification. After recycling ten runs, the polymeric nanocatalysts showed no loss on either conversion or selectivity and maintained stable catalytic activity. The conceptually temperature-responsive Pickering emulsions provide a clean and effective channel to efficiently recycle the polymeric catalysts and promote the catalytic activity of biphasic reactions.

Abstract:The mass transfer resistance at liquid (oil)-liquid (extractant) interface seriously limits the reaction rate and desulfurization efficiency in extraction-catalytic oxidative desulfurization (ECODS), and the catalyst is difficult to be recycled in the homogeneous system. Herein, we demonstrated a renewable Pickering emulsion system with enlarged interfacial contact area to overcome the mass transfer resistance. The bifunctional materials were designed based on Janus graphene oxide (GO) 2D-sheets, amino-modified SBA-15 (NH 2 -SBA-15) mesoporous microspheres and H 3 PW 12 O 40 (HPW), as both catalysts and emulsion stabilizers to establish the catalytic emulsion system. Excellent amphiphilicity was endowed by the anisotropic Janus structure of prepared materials, which could convert the oil/extractant bi-phase into a stable Pickering emulsion. The interfacial contact area was skillfully enlarged in emulsion due to formed micro emulsion droplets and empty channels between the droplets, and the catalyst could be easily recycled by centrifugation. Besides, the unique properties of catalyst including large specific surface area, adequate exposed catalytic active sites and high pore volume could also shorten the reaction path and facilitate the rapid diffusion of reactants and products. This opens the door to the application of Pickering emulsion in ECODS fields based on the design of bifunctional materials.

Abstract:Pickering emulsion has recently received widespread attention since it alleviates the mass transfer limitation between oil/water biphases for efficient interfacial catalysis. However, a convenient strategy to control the emulsification and demulsification, so as to combine the reactivity and recovery of catalytic emulsifiers in Pickering interfacial catalysis, remains challenging to date. Herein, we have developed a thermo-switchable Pickering emulsion which could undergo reversible emulsification and demulsification at its cloud point to realize the thermo-controlled Pickering interfacial catalysis for asymmetric sulfoxidation in water. Thermoresponsive Janus silica nanosheets (JNSs) were thus prepared by decorating a stimuli-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) brush and a catalytically active chiral salen TiIV complex on the opposite sides of mesosilica nanosheets, respectively. Characterization results suggested their temperature-sensitive wettability switching behaviors which resulted in thermo-switchable emulsification/demulsification in an oil/water biphasic system. The smart JNSs could significantly accelerate the asymmetric sulfoxidation in water at room temperature through the formation of stable oil/water Pickering emulsions and then in situ-demulsified quickly for complete separation upon heating over the cloud point (T > 39 °C). The thermo-switchable emulsification/demulsification approach provided a convenient way to control the reaction and separation of Pickering interfacial catalysis on demand, which should simplify the operation in industrial applications.

Abstract:A series of hexadecylphosphate acid (HDPA) terminated mixed-oxide nanoparticles have been investigated to catalyze the oxidation of toluene exclusive to benzaldehyde under mild conditions in an emulsion of toluene/water with the catalysts as stabilizers. With the HDPA-Fe2O3/Al2O3 as the basic catalyst, a series of transition metals, such as Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Cr, Mo, V, and Ti, was respectively doped to the basic catalyst to modify the performance of the catalytic system, in expectation of influencing the mobility of the lattice oxygen species in the oxide catalysts. Under normally working conditions of the catalytic system, the nanoparticles of catalysts located themselves at the interface between the oil and water phases, constituting the Pickering emulsion. Both the doped iron oxide and its surface adsorbed hexadecylphosphate molecules were essential to the catalytic system for excellent performances with high toluene conversions as well as the exclusive selectivity to benzaldehyde. Under optimal conditions, ∼83% of toluene conversion and >99% selectivity to benzaldehyde were obtained, using molecular oxygen as oxidant and HDPA-(Fe2O3-NiO)/Al2O3 as the catalyst. This process is green and low cost to produce high quality benzaldehyde from O2 oxidation of toluene.
CO 2 -Switchable Emulsification and Demulsification of Pickering Emulsion Stabilized by Zirconium-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsions have aroused considerable amounts of attention recently because of their potential for on-demand demulsification. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising emulsifiers for the construction of Pickering emulsions due to their ultrahigh specific surface area, tunable porosity, and designable structures. However, CO2-responsive zirconium-based MOF-stabilized Pickering emulsions have been rarely reported up to now. Herein, a new series of amine-functionalized UiO-66-O-APTES were developed via the covalent post-modification of UiO-66-OH with different amounts of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and were then applied to construct CO2-switchable Pickering emulsions. It was shown that UiO-66-O-APTES could emulsify toluene and water well to form an emulsion even at the content of 0.1 wt %. Significantly, the Pickering emulsion could be reversibly demulsified and re-emulsified by alternate CO2 and N2 bubbling under constant pressure. Mechanism results revealed that the CO2-switchable phase transition based on the formation of hydrophilic ammonium salts resulting from the reaction of APTES with CO2, which lowered the wettability of particles, reduced emulsion stability, and resulted in emulsion breaking. After CO2 was removed, the Pickering emulsion could be rebuilt by the reverse reaction. By using this strategy, a controllable and highly effective CuI-catalyzed cycloaddition reaction has been achieved, and the coupling of efficient condensation, product separation, and recovery of MOF catalysts has been demonstrated to give rise to a sustainable reaction process.

Molecular‐level Modulation of N, S‐co‐doped Mesoporous Carbon Nanospheres for Selective Aqueous Catalytic Oxidation of Ethylbenzene

Abstract:Selective oxidation of aromatic alkanes into high value-added products through benzylic C—H bond activation is one of the main reactions in chemical industry. On account of the constantly increasing demand for mass production, efficient, eco-friendly and sustainable catalysts are urgently needed. Herein, we describe a facile and versatile emulsion-assisted interface self-assembly strategy towards molecular-level fabrication of co-doped mesoporous carbon nanospheres with controllable active N and S species. The method enables a high degree of control over nanoparticle sizes, mesoporous nanostructures, contents of heteroatoms and the chemical composition. The optimized catalyst exhibits high catalytic performance of 97% ethylbenzene conversion and 98% selectivity to acetophenone. Density functional theory simulations reveal that N, S-co-doping leads to the redistribution of charge and spin densities, introducing more active carbon atoms and realizing aerobic oxidation of ethylbenzene efficiently. This work presents a general strategy for molecular-level design of carbon-based catalysts, and also provides new insight into the influence of heteroatom-doping on catalytic properties.

Abstract:Herein, we described for the first time a CO2 and redox dual responsive paraffin oil-in-water Pickering emulsion stabilized by the modified silica nanoparticles with Se-containing tertiary amine, SeTA, in which the tertiary amine serves as a CO2-sensitive group, and the Se atom serves as a redox-sensitive center. The Pickering emulsion can be reversibly switched between stable and unstable states by bubbling CO2 and N2 in the reduced state, or with the addition of H2O2 and Na2SO3 in the absence of CO2, because of the adsorption and desorption of SeTA on the silica surface. The former is mainly attributed to a CO2-controllable electrostatic attraction, resulting from the transition of molecules between cationic and nonionic states; whereas, the latter is ascribed to a redox-tunable hydrogen bonding, originating from the transition of molecules between selenide and selenoxide. However, in the presence of CO2, redox can only induce a change in the droplet size, not demulsification. These interesting and unique multiresponsive behaviors endow the Pickering emulsion with a capacity for intelligent control of emulsification and demulsification, as well as the droplet size, which may be an asset for a myriad of technological applications in biomedicine, microfluidics, drug delivery, and cosmetics.

Abstract:There are still technical challenges associated with surface fouling and clogging in microchannels when conducting multiphase catalytic reactions involving solid particles. In this study, a Pickering emulsion was employed to enhance the oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BNOH) catalyzed by Pd/SiO2 nanoparticles under Taylor flow in a microchannel reactor. The reaction characteristics of benzyl alcohol/water Pickering emulsion in a microchannel reactor were studied experimentally. The characteristic results showed that the O/W Picking emulsion system was superior to the W/O Picking emulsion system for the catalytic oxidation reaction. The influences of a wide range of operational variables were characterized on the conversion of reactants and the selectivity of the desired product. The optimized reaction conditions included: reaction temperature 403 K, CB 5 wt%, O2/BNOH (mol/mol) 0.76 and tube length 8 m. Under the optimal operating conditions, the conversion of BNOH and the selectivity of benzaldehyde were found to be 86.53% and 99.79%, respectively. In addition, the interfacial transport-reaction mechanism in Pickering emulsions under Taylor flow in microchannels was proposed from the perspective of multiphase mass transfer. This development provided significant insights and guiding for effectively performing multiphase catalytic reactions involving solid catalyst particles in microchannel reactors.
