Abstract:Tetracyclines constitute a unique class of antibiotic agents, widely prescribed for both community and hospital infections due to their broad spectrum of activity. Acting by disrupting protein synthesis through tight binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, their interference is typically reversible, rendering them bacteriostatic in action. Resistance to tetracyclines has primarily been associated with changes in pump efflux or ribosomal protection mechanisms. To address this challenge, tetracycline molecules have been chemically modified, resulting in the development of third-generation tetracyclines. These novel tetracyclines offer significant advantages in treating infections, whether used alone or in combination therapies, especially in hospital settings. Beyond their conventional antimicrobial properties, research has highlighted their potential non-antibiotic properties, including their impact on immunomodulation and malignancy. This review will focus on third-generation tetracyclines, namely tigecycline, eravacycline, and omadacycline. We will delve into their mechanisms of action and resistance, while also evaluating their pros and cons over time. Additionally, we will explore their therapeutic potential, analyzing their primary indications of prescription, potential future uses, and non-antibiotic features. This review aims to provide valuable insights into the clinical applications of third-generation tetracyclines, thereby enhancing understanding and guiding optimal clinical use.

Abstract:Tetracyclines are broad-spectrum antibiotics used as human and veterinary ailments, anticancer and antiviral agents, and for treating inflammations including arthritis and the Huntington's disease. However, their inappropriate usage and disposal induce environmental pollution due to their persistency, hydrophilicity and limited volatility, requiring advanced remediation methods. Here, we review techniques for tetracycline removal, including adsorption, advanced oxidation and filtration. Materials to treat tetracycline pollution include aged microplastics, green materials, chemical compounds, sonocatalysts and membranes. Complete tetracycline removal is achieved by using membranes, sonocatalysis and composites. Green composites appear eco-friendly for wastewater treatment. Chemically-synthesized composites are mainly used in photocatalysis, oxidative and enzymatic degradation.

Abstract:Tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) are widely used all over the world in recent decades. TCs are a family used as broadspectrum antibiotics and animal veterinary drugs. Among the TCs, tetracycline (TC) is the most use. Due to the rapid development of antibiotics industry, the dosage standards of TC are not yet clearly defined in most countries and regions. TC is hard to degrade in living organisms and can even be converted to more toxic substances. The overuse and wanton discharge of TC, also caused serious pollution of groundwater. This article attempts to summarize the latest knowledge on the nature, sources, pollution status, the impact on water environment toxicity of TC respectively. Meanwhile, there are many technologies to remove TC. This paper mainly included 12 kinds of degradation methods, including photodegradation, microbial removal, adsorption, electrochemical and sludge digestion. This review will provide a reference for the study of the basic properties and removal methods of TC.

Abstract:Over the years, the enormous use of tetracycline (TC) in pharmaceutical industries caused unwanted heap in the environment that led to the deterioration of human and ecological conditions. Therefore, the synergistic functioning of photo-Fenton and photocatalysis has been introduced which enables the regeneration of more •OH, •O 2 - species thereby enhancing the TC degradation performance of photocatalysts. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) photocatalyst recently, gained massive consideration due to the suitable energy band gap, efficient preparation method, and physicochemical properties. However, due to some drawbacks, various modification strategies (doping, Z-Scheme, S-Scheme) have been adopted to perk up the degradation activity of bare g-C 3 N 4 . In the current review, we have provided insights into various modification strategies employed for g-C 3 N 4 and reaction parameters for the effective remediation of tetracycline using photo-Fenton-assisted photocatalysis. The review further highlighted the potential of the integrated effect of g-C 3 N 4 -based photo-Fenton-assisted photocatalytic processes for achieving higher tetracycline removal efficiency followed by current challenges and future perspectives.

Abstract:<p>Tetracyclines are extensively used to treat human and animal infectious diseases due to its effective antimicrobial activities. About 70–90% of its parent materials are released into the environment through urine and feces, implying they are the most frequently detected antibiotics in the environment with high ecological risks. Adsorption and photocatalysis have been promising techniques for the removal of tetracyclines due to effectiveness and efficiency. Graphene-based materials provide promising platforms for adsorptive and photocatalytic removal of tetracyclines from aqueous environment owning to distinctive remarkable physicochemical, optical, and electrical characteristics. Herein, we intensively reviewed the available literatures in order to provide comprehensive insight about the applications and mechanisms of graphene-based materials for removal of tetracyclines via adsorption and phototocatalysis. The synthesis methods of graphene-based materials, the tetracycline adsorption and photocatalytic-degradation conditions, and removal mechanisms have been extensively discussed. Finally concluding remarks and future perspectives have been deduced and recommended to stimulate further researches in the subject. The review study can be used as theoretical guideline for further researchers to improve the current approaches of material synthesis and application towards tetracyclines removal.</p>

Abstract:Tetracycline antibiotics are widely used in human medical treatment, control of animal disease, and agricultural feed because of their broad spectrum of action, high efficiency, and low cost. The excessive use of antibiotics and arbitrary discharge of antibiotic wastewater have become increasingly serious problems, and the current sewage-treatment process is not ideal for treating water contaminated with tetracycline antibiotics, leading to increasingly prominent antibiotic pollution in water and the imminent need for its removal. In order to understand the necessity of removing tetracycline antibiotics from the water environment, this paper first expounds on their source, harms, and pollution status in oceans and in surface water, groundwater, wastewater, and drinking water. It next introduces the research status of conventional treatment methods such as adsorption methods, biological methods, and physical and chemical methods, then introduces new treatment methods such as advanced oxidation methods and comprehensive treatment technology in sewage plants. The degradation effects, mechanisms of action, and challenges of these methods were summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of each treatment technology are compared. Finally, potential future processing technologies are discussed.

Abstract:Antibacterial drugs are among the most commonly used medications in the world. Tetracycline is a widely used antibiotic for human and animal therapy due to its broad-spectrum activity, high effectiveness, and reasonable cost. The indications for treatment with tetracycline include pneumonia, bone and joint infections, infectious disorders of the skin, sexually transmitted and gastrointestinal infections. However, tetracycline has become a serious threat to the environment because of its overuse by humans and veterinarians and weak ability to degrade. Tetracycline is capable of accumulating along the food chain, causing toxicity to the microbial community, encouraging the development and spread of antibiotic resistance, creating threats to drinking and irrigation water, and disrupting microbial flora in the human intestine. It is essential to address the negative impact of tetracycline on the environment, as it causes ecological imbalance. Ineffective wastewater systems are among the main reasons for the increased antibiotic concentrations in aquatic sources. It is possible to degrade tetracycline by breaking it down into small molecules with less harmful or nonhazardous effects. A range of methods for physical, chemical, and biological degradation exists. The review will discuss the negative effects of tetracycline consumption on the aquatic environment and describe available removal methods.

Abstract:Due to the widespread use of tetracyclines antibiotics (TCs) in livestock breeding, TCs has always caused soil pollution. TCs cannot only enter soil and water bodies through multiple channels but also accumulate in them over a long period. It is more abundant in soils, agricultural land. Primarily, should explore efficient methods for removing or degrading TCs. This review provides an overview of the birth, development and problem of soil contamination of TCs. Then focuses on the toxicity and effects of TCs on microorganisms, animals, and plants. Furthermore, in the following chapters, microbial -, plant -, animal – biodegradation methods are introduced to summarize the species and plants applied in soil TCs removal at this stage. Meanwhile, the principle mechanism of advanced oxidation processes is analyzed deeply to fill the gap. In addition, a case of microbial fuel cells based on sustainable bioenergetics with promising prospects for soil TCs removal is presented. Due to the interaction between carbonaceous materials and soil, the characteristics of adsorption method under soil environment are deeply analyzed.

Abstract:Tetracycline residues have frequently been detected in multi-environmental media, and it could induce antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in microorganisms, which has attracted great attention. Where biodegradation processes may be a promising strategy to remove tetracycline. Thus, this study mainly considers: (i) the degradation of tetracycline by microorganisms including single microorganisms and microbial flora; (ii) the elimination of tetracycline during biochemical treatment processes and advanced treatment systems in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and constructed wetlands (CWs); (iii) the degradation of tetracycline by biological coupling processes; (iv) the confusion and problem of tetracycline biodegradation. Furthermore, the characteristics and comparison of tetracycline biodegradation have been discussed in detail. Additionally, future research directions are suggested to reduce tetracycline in the aquatic environment, especially tetracycline biodegradation and the nitrogen conversion process. Degradation of tetracycline by pure culture strains and microflora was significant.Degradation of tetracycline by biochemical treatment process was summarized.Advanced treatment process in CWs could eliminate tetracycline.Future research directions on biodegradation of tetracycline are proposed.

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance is a major health issue partly caused by the diffusion of antibiotic pollution in the natural environment, thus calling for advanced methods to remove antibiotics such as tetracyclines, a major class of pharmaceuticals. Here we review the use of MXene and nano-zero-valent iron-based materials to treat tetracycline in wastewater. MXenes are a class of two-dimensional nanomaterials represented as Mn+1XnTx, where M is an early transition metal, X refers to carbon or nitrogen, and T denotes surface termination groups. Values of n ranges between 1 and 4, and x indicate the number of surface functional groups. MXene and nano-zero-valent iron-based materials can be used as adsorbents, photocatalysts, electrocatalysts and membranes for removing tetracyclines. We review the toxicology of tetracycline, the synthesis and recycling of materials, the removal of tetracyclines and underlying mechanisms, and the use of materials as sensors. Remarkably, a MXene derived from carbide nitride and bismuth oxobromide removed 99% of tetracycline in 30 min. Similarly, a nano-zero-valent iron doped with graphene oxide and copper allowed 100% degradation of tetracycline in 15 min.

Abstract:<p>Tetracycline (TC) is a commonly used human and veterinary antibiotic that is mostly discharged into wastewater in the form of the parent compounds. At present, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) use activated sludge processes that are not specifically designed to remove such pollutants. Considering the biological toxicity of TC in aquatic environment, the migration and fate of TC in the process of wastewater treatment deserve attention. This paper reviews the influence of TC on the functional bacteria in the sludge matrix and the development of tetracycline-resistant genes, and also discusses their adsorption removal rates, their adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm models, and infers their adsorption mechanism. In addition, the biodegradation of TC in the process of biological treatment is reviewed. Co-metabolism and the role of dominant bacteria in the degradation process are described, along with the formation of degradation byproducts and their toxicity. Furthermore, the current popular integrated coupling-system for TC degradation is also introduced. This paper systematically introduces the interaction between TC and activated sludge in WWTPs. The review concludes by providing directions to address research and knowledge gaps in TC removal from wastewater.</p>

Abstract:The release of tetracyclines (TCs) in the environment is of significant concern because the residual antibiotics may promote resistance in pathogenic microorganisms, and the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes poses a potential threat to ecosystems. Microbial biodegradation plays an important role in removing TCs in both natural and artificial systems. After long-term acclimation, microorganisms that can tolerate and degrade TCs are retained to achieve efficient removal of TCs under the optimum conditions (e.g. optimal operational parameters and moderate concentrations of TCs). To date, cultivation-based techniques have been used to isolate bacteria or fungi with potential degradation ability. Moreover, the biodegradation mechanism of TCs can be unveiled with the development of chemical analysis (e.g. UPLC-Q-TOF mass spectrometer) and molecular biology techniques (e.g. 16S rRNA gene sequencing, multi-omics sequencing, and whole genome sequencing). In this review, we made an overview of the biodegradation of TCs in different systems, refined functional microbial communities and pure isolates relevant to TCs biodegradation, and summarized the biodegradation products, pathways, and degradation genes of TCs. In addition, ecological risks of TCs biodegradation were considered from the perspectives of metabolic products toxicity and resistance genes. Overall, this article aimed to outline the research progress of TCs biodegradation and propose future research prospects.

Abstract:Abstract The use of antibiotics for breeding and for humans increased considerably in recent years, as a dietary supplement to enhance animal growth. This frequent use leads to the detection of residues in water and wastewater. Thus, the emergence of new strains of bacteria resistant to these antibiotics and, can lead to incurable diseases of livestock, and can lead to a possible transmission of these strains to humans. The purpose of this work is to develop new materials based on treated Maghnia clay, activated carbon, cement, and PVA polymer, named geomaterials. These materials were intended for the containment of hazardous wastes in landfills. The removal of tetracycline from aqueous solution was tested by adsorption onto synthesised geomaterials and their mineral constituents. Adsorption kinetics revealed that tetracycline was rapidly retained by GM and ATMa. This was confirmed by the relatively short equilibrium time of 30 min. The pseudo-second-order and intraparticle models well fitted the adsorption kinetic of the TC-adsorbent studied systems. It was noticed that the adsorption kinetic passes through several mechanisms, was demonstrated by the multi-linearity on the plot of q t against the square root of t. The adsorption capacity ( Q a ) of TC onto GM is pH-dependent. Indeed, Q a reaches a maximum value ( Q a = 12.58 mg ∙ g –1 at a very acidic pH of 2, then the adsorbed amount decreases to reach a minimum value at pH of 8, and for basic pHs Q a increases up to 10 mg ∙ g –1 .
Study on mechanism of removal of sudden Tetracycline by compound modified biological sand filtration process

Abstract:The removal of tetracycline from the sewage plant effluents through advanced treatment methods is key to controlling tetracycline levels in the water environment. In this study, modified quartz sands (QS) were used in a biological sand filter to remove tetracycline. The modified QS, with different surface characteristics, were prepared using glass etching technology combined with subsequent chemical modification methods, including hydroxylation treatment, metal ion modification, and amino modification. The adsorption efficiency of hydroxylated QS was higher than that of metal ion modified and amino modified QS, with adsorption efficiencies of 20.4331 mg/kg, 12.8736 mg/kg, and 10.1737 mg/kg, respectively. Results indicated that QS primarily reduce tetracycline through adsorption. Adsorption on ordinary QS fit the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, while adsorption on other modified QS and biofilm-coated QS fit the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. Biodegradation was identified as another mechanism for tetracycline reduction, which fit the zero-order kinetic model. Pseudomonas alcaligenes and unclassified Pseudomonas accounted for 96.6% of the total tetracycline-degrading bacteria. This study elucidates the effectiveness and mechanisms of five types of QS in treating tetracycline from sewage plant effluents. It provides a novel method for tetracycline reduction in real-world wastewater scenarios.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization and overuse of pharmaceuticals and personal care products has resulted in their occurrence in water bodies and wastewater streams worldwide. In the past few years, high concentrations of antibiotics, analgesics, antiepileptics, and antimicrobial agents have been detected in Indian rivers and domestic effluents as well. Despite trace concentrations, these micropollutants escape conventional treatment systems and find their way in effluents of sewage treatment plants. This is attributed to certain properties such as log K ow, water solubility, nonbiodegradability, etc. In order to address these shortcomings, functionalized adsorbents and various advanced treatment methods such as ozonation, membrane processes, and advanced photocatalytic materials have been developed. In this chapter a comparison of state of the art treatment methods has been done and their shortcomings have been discussed. Future research directions have also been suggested.

Abstract:Treatments of dye wastewater from the industries are to be done in order to control the negative impact to our environment due to polluted water. In this review, recent technologies for the removal of dyes from wastewater are discussed briefly. The technologies such as coagulation, membrane treatment, advanced oxidation process, biological treatment and adsorption, their performance, features, advantages and disadvantages have been highlighted. From the review, it is concluded that advanced oxidation process, biological treatment and adsorption are frequently used techniques for dye removal and large numbers of research were done in the field of adsorption in recent years.

Abstract:In this study, a split-type photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR), incorporating suspended graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as photocatalyst and a layered polymeric composite (using polyamide, polyethersulfone and polysulfone polymers) as a membrane was fabricated to remove tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solutions as the world's second most used and discharged antibiotic in wastewater. The photocatalyst was synthesised from melamine by ultrasonic-assisted thermal polymerisation method and, along with the membrane, was characterised using various methods, including Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis (BET), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis). The PMR process was optimised, using Design-Expert software for tetracycline removal in terms of UV irradiation time, pH, photocatalyst loading, tetracycline concentration, and membrane separation iteration. It was revealed that a membrane-integrated reactor as a sustainable system could effectively produce clean water by simultaneous removal of tetracycline and photocatalyst from aqueous solution. The maximum removal of 94.8% was obtained at the tetracycline concentration of 22.16 ppm, pH of 9.78 with 0.56 g/L of photocatalyst in the irradiation time of 113.77 min after six times of passing membrane. The PMR system showed reasonable reusability by about a 25.8% drop in TC removal efficiency after seven cycles at optimal conditions. The outcomes demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed PMR system in tetracycline removal from water and suggest that it can be scaled as an effective approach for a sustainable supply of antibiotic-free clean water.

Abstract:Contamination of water sources with various organic and inorganic non-biodegradable pollutants is becoming a growing concern due to industrialization, urbanization, and the inefficiency of traditional wastewater treatment processes. Simultaneous removal of dual pollutants via photocatalytic redox reaction has been tremendously explored in the last five years due to the effective decontamination of pollutants compared to a single pollutants system. In a photocatalysis mechanism, the holes in the valence band can remarkably promote the oxidation of a pollutant. At the same time, photoexcited electrons are also consumed for the reduction reaction. The synergist between the reduction and oxidation inhibits the recombination of electron-hole pairs extending their lifetime. Here we review the use of metal oxide-based photocatalysts for the simultaneous removal of tetracycline and hexavalent chromium. Several strategies for the enhancement of this treatment method which are the pH of mixed pollutants and the addition of additives are discussed This review offers a recent perspective on the development of photocatalysis systems for industrial applications.
Efficient removal of oxytetracycline antibiotic from aqueous media using UV/g-C3N4/Fe3O4 photocatalytic process

Abstract:Residual pharmaceuticals in the environment are a class of emerging pollutants that endanger human health. Tetracycline's family, including oxytetracycline (OTC), are known as one of the most produced and consumed antibiotics worldwide. The g-C3N4/Fe3O4 nanocomposite with high level of catalytic efficiency features suitable performance in water/wastewater treatment. Therefore, in the present study, this nanocomposite was applied to remove the oxytetracycline from the aqueous environment. In this research study, g-C3N4/Fe3O4 nanocomposite (serving as catalyst) was initially synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The effect of key operating parameters such as initial solution pH, dose of catalyst, contact time and initial concentration of OTC in aqueous solutions was investigated under UV irradiation. In addition, COD and TOC tests, the kinetics and the effect of radical scavengers on the applied photocatalytic process were all evaluated. The maximum removal efficiency of OTC (99.8 %) was achieved under the following conditions: neutral solution pH 7; catalyst dose, 0.7 g/L; and an initial OTC concentration of 5 mg/L. The data showed that the kinetics of the reaction followed the first-order model with R2 of 0.9755. The respective COD and TOC efficiency values for the applied photocatalytic process were determined to be 87 and 59 %, respectively. In addition, the lowest removal efficiency of OTC was observed in the presence of tert-butanol radical scavengers, and OH radicals played a main role. The UV/g-C3N4/Fe3O4 photocatalytic process proved to be highly efficient for the removal of OTC antibiotic and could be potentially applied for the removal of other pollutants from aqueous solutions.
