Abstract:The paper focuses on the issue of foreign language teaching in primary and pre-primary education. The research analysed the national concept of promoting foreign language education in Slovakia since the 1990s. The methodology was based on a content analysis of curriculum documents and their accompanying methodological materials. The research tool allowed us to define and describe the indicators in the diachronic aspect in terms of the main objectives, forms, methods and content of foreign language teaching. The article presents the results of analysis of documents on teaching foreign languages in primary and pre-primary education in Slovak conditions. They provide the basis for the possibilities of solving the current state of centrally institutionalised foreign language teaching regarding the interests and needs of the target groups. The discussion discursively confronts the current challenges and trends of foreign language teaching in national conditions.

Abstract:Inclusive education is a controlled process that creates an environment for education and training, respect for diversity, abilities, and various educational needs of a child or pupil. It is topical in most countries’ professional and legislative discourse. It turns out that teachers’ attitudes are one of the main pillars of inclusive education policy implementation. The present research aimed to pursue connections and relationships between the teachers’ pro-inclusive attitudes, length of experience, and content of their learning activities. The research sample consisted of 926 kindergarten and elementary school teachers; the TAIS was used (Saloviita, 2015) as the research tool. Results showed that kindergarten teachers had more positive attitudes towards inclusive education than elementary school teachers. There are themes in education through which elementary school teachers can be developed pro-inclusive attitudes.
Foreign language teacher preparation in Slovakia and Poland from skills to competences

Abstract:The paper discusses the challenges of foreign language teacher preparation in Slovakia and Poland resulting from observed tendencies such as digitalisation, mobility and specialisation of disciplines. The background for these reflections on the state of teacher training education is the document European Profile for Language Teacher Education – a Frame of Reference (2004) and DigComp 2.2 The Digital Competence Framework for Citizens (2022), which point out the main fields essential for the development of high-quality foreign language teachers in terms of digital, life and entrepreneurial competences. The authors of the paper analyze example curricula at two universities, one in Poland (Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań) and one in Slovakia (Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra) to answer the following research questions: how will future foreign language teachers be supported in developing their competences at the tertiary level? How do the current foreign language teacher training curricula at universities in Slovakia and Poland incorporate the need for the development of new competences? The results of the analysis present the discrepancies at both universities in the way the recommendations concerning competence development are incorporated, however they also reveal the weaknesses and strengths of the existing solutions.

Abstract:The article considers and analyzes the peculiarities of the professional training of educators in the developed countries of the world, and educators’ progressive achievements, and a high level of high school teacher training, which develop professional qualities in line with world standards, as the State standards of preschool education and all development programs. Children have stated an integrated approach to the educational process in the pedagogy. The works of leading scientists, which reveal various aspects of the future teachers training for pedagogical activities, are analyzed in the works of domestic scientists, in which the specificity of education, the state of pre-university vocational training, problems of higher education, various aspects of adult education, in particular integration of pedagogical training, foreign systems of pedagogical technologies of development, reform of European higher education in general. It is concluded that the systems of training teachers of preschool education in the leading European countries are different. They have their own peculiarities and their own promising experience, as well as the basic qualities of the training of future preschool specialists of European countries, not only is the system of organization of educational process in higher educational institutions established, but also the complex implementation of further training and professional development, the design of a new educational policy in the framework of the European integration processes that ensure the quality of preschool education in countries.
Early literacy curriculum and its journey to kindergarten classroom

Abstract:Abstract Implementing new school reforms in school practice is extremely challenging mostly because of teacher resistance to change, or uncertainty, fear, or nostalgia for the previous curriculum. Since 2016 a new preschool curriculum including a new early literacy curriculum has been in force in Slovakia. The aim of the study is to assess how well teachers follow the requirement to use a variety of texts in the classroom to promote early literacy development. The analysis is performed on 138 observations out of a total of 215 structured observations, in which teachers used a text as part of an educational activity. The predominant use of narrative texts is linked to more traditional early literacy activities; however, the employment of different text genres relates to the use of different sources of text presentation, engagement with different ways of working with the text and is accompanied by different reading activities.

Abstract:The Slovak education is currently experiencing a turbulent period associated with ongoing efforts to reform the education system, under-funding of education with low teacher salaries, overworked and feminized teaching staff, low social status of a teacher in society, problems in the creation and distribution of current textbooks, insufficient interest in studying natural sciences, leaving of young people to study abroad, etc. This situation is also reflected in the training of future teachers including the geography teachers (in combination with other subjects). The aim of this study is to provide basic information on the development of future geography teacher education in Nitra, which has almost a 60-year tradition. Moreover, it characterizes the current state of this education in the context of the subject field didactics and pedagogical practice and identifies the challenges of their future preparation. Methods of text analysis, information comparison, and statistical processing of quantitative information were used in this study. Key findings include the dynamics of the number of graduates from geography teaching study programs, responding to the situation in education system and demographic decline in the population, and reduction of contact lessons at the university leading to a reduction in the professional and didactic extent of knowledge and skills of future teachers. The most important conclusions or recommendations as well as scientific contribution concern the necessity to change the attitude of teachers towards the practically oriented teaching with stronger emphasis on training students’ creativity not only through ICT, but also using creative and critical thinking strategies.

Abstract:The problem of providing lifelong learning opportunities at the present stage of global community development remains relevant and is a top-priority agenda for practically all civilized countries. Positive experience in organizing professional training of preschool teachers in European countries requires that perspective trends in the modernization of future preschool teachers’ professional training should be specified following European standards of teacher education and the most significant achievements of higher education, its peculiarities and specifics should be preserved. Conceptual principles, peculiarities of historical development and key trends in the system of professional teacher education in Germany, France and the UK have been analyzed and determined; professional profiles, professional competency profiles and qualification requirements have been characterized; both national specific and general common trends in development of preschool teachers’ professional training in European countries have been outlined. The development of professional standards for teacher education in European countries contributes to specifying and developing professional profiles of preschool teachers in Europe that are rather diverse and determine the multifacetedness and multifunctionality of professional training. The main trends in education policy and qualification requirements for professional training of preschool teachers in European countries include: providing public sector specialists with initial training; adjusting consecutive education to the provisions of the Bologna Declaration; ensuring continuing professional development of specialists involved in educational activities in preschool institutions; implementing the European conception of professional training with the use of competency-based approach.

Development of Intercultural Competence during Pedagogical Practice of Ukrainian Students in Vocational Schools in Slovakia

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: In the presented paper, the role of practical training in the formation of intercultural competencies is considered in terms of Dublin descriptors on the basis of educational intercultural practice. Methods: For the purposes of the study, a multi-stage model of intercultural practice was developed. The method of comparative analysis showed the correspondence of the model to the main descriptors. The study is based on the results of intercultural practice of Ukrainian students in vocational schools in Slovakia. Results: It has been shown that the four levels of practice in the form of short-term introductory intercultural practice, ethno-cultural educational practice, scientific and pedagogical communication practice abroad, as well as long-term intercultural training correspond to the Dublin competence descriptors in the form of knowledge, skills, communication, autonomy and responsibility. Discussion: The results of the research show the directions in the formation of intercultural competencies of students. Close cultures such as the Ukrainian and the Slovak can be a launching pad for building deeper competencies. The pedagogical practice of Slovak and Ukrainian students develops the intercultural competencies of both the trainees and the students. Limitations: The study was conducted in a limited number of educational institutions in Ukraine and Slovakia. It is expected to increase their number on the principles of reciprocity in order to develop intercultural competencies in the students of the two countries. Conclusions: The model is practically implemented in the process of the teaching practice of Ukrainian students in selected schools in Slovakia. An increase in the level of intercultural competencies was observed both in the Ukrainian students and in the students of Slovak schools.

Abstract:The article provides a comparative analysis of preschool educator training for professional activity in foreign education systems. It characterizes higher pedagogical education and innovative tendencies in foreign countries. An innovative aspect of preschool teacher training is singled out in the course the analysis of preschool educator training systems abroad: maximum continuity, perspective, and continuity of educational programs of various degrees, their mutual integration, which guarantees the continuation of education. The future pedagogue training is viewed through wide use of such innovative methods as discussions, heuristic conversation, «aquarium,» the method of synectics, didactic games, etc. The results of the analysis of innovative methods used abroad during the preschool specialist training demonstrate the uniformity of its key criteria, namely conceptuality, consistency, manageability, effectiveness, and reproducibility. The research emphasizes that in the aspect of integration into the European educational system abroad, future preschool specialist training acquires the features of knowledge generalization and universalization, curriculum diversification, disciplines courses integration, standardization and unification of education content, and appraisal of students’ educational achievements, etc. Considering these principal statements, the process of Ukrainian pedagogical educational development can be projected saving organizational forms and models that were shaped historically, taking into account European and world tendencies. Conclusions regarding organization tendencies of future preschool teacher training in the world countries allow focus on those aspects that can be determined as innovative ones for the modern domestic system of preschool teacher training.
Training Pathways for Adult Learning Professionals in Higher Education: Case of Hungary and Serbia

Abstract:The topic of the professionalization of adult education is receiving a great deal of attention worldwide. This is justified because the competencies among adult learning professionals have a significant impact on the effectiveness of adult learning. The professional preparedness of adult learning practitioners is therefore a basic condition for the high-quality realization of the adult learning process. Nevertheless, the training system for adult learning professionals varies greatly from country to country. Professionals in adult education are often andragogically unskilled individuals, and national education policy also plays a key role in this. A comparative approach has been used in this study to examine the historical development and content elements of university-level andragogy programs in Hungary and Serbia. The findings show that although Hungary and Serbia are neighbors, the development of adult education as a profession has followed completely different trends in the two countries.

Social disadvantage from the perspective of a teacher in preschool education

Abstract:Introduction. The problematic of social disadvantaged children and compulsory pre-primary school year are actual theme not just for teachers in kindergartens. The aims of compulsory pre-primary school year are equalizing the developmental differences in children development, eliminate handicaps which they bring from families and easier the beginning of primary schooling. The main aim of the research in this chapter, is to highlight the issue of social disadvantaged children and their status in the kindergarten. Methodology. By using three case studies the author has found out how a status of a social disadvantaged child influence a child and its family. The children were from the second class of the kindergarten in the age 5-7. Also, how this problematic is seen by pedagogical workers in chosen kindergarten. As respondents were chosen two teachers in the kindergarten and one teacher assistant, who works directly with the children. The qualitative research was conducted in the kindergarten which is placed in small village with 700 habitats in Vysočina district, Czech Republic. Findings. According to the teachers it is crucial to work differently with the social disadvantaged children. It is important to keep the individual attitude to each child, use diverse method of work with children and keep the motivation high. The children from the social disadvantaged families not always visit the kindergarten. In the Czech Republic, it is an obligation to attend at least one year before the start of compulsory schooling. The environment where they live is not always stimulating enough for the equal development. The kindergarten is place where they can get the potential, familiarize with many activities and rituals. Conclusions. The main challenge is link families of children who visit the kindergarten and continue developing the idea of active family and child from social disadvantaged environment. Due to this attitude the next generation can be influence by this positive thinking. Thus, it can help to build next positive and engaging generation.
Quality of education and care in kindergartens and their readiness for inclusive education in Bulgaria

Abstract:A high-quality pre-school education will improve the well-being of all children, especially those with special needs for support, will enhance their development, with respect of diversity and dignity. The article presents the results of an exploratory study on those aspects of the quality of pre-school education that are important for implementing of inclusive education. The significant effect of three structure characteristics: group's composition, location, teachers' experience on overall quality and on two groups of process characteristics measured with ECERS-3 were found through the multiple regression analysis on the data of a moderately representative sample (40 kindergartens). The longer professional experience and the smaller group size have been confirmed as factors for the improvement of the educational quality, especially for the effectiveness of the instructional approach. Our study revealed positive teacher–child interactions, but certain flaws such as insufficient individualisation, neglect of free choice activities, lack of practices stimulating learning and language acquisition of children from marginal social groups and ethnic minorities. Evidence-based measures for improvement of teachers' in-service qualification andfor provision of better facilities specific to the rural and urban areas should be initiated. They will guarantee the successful implementation of inclusive education in line with current legislative reforms.

Abstract:The study presents the brief analysis of existing concepts of pedagogical education; experience of foreign educational institutions in educators training presented. A number of important steps taken in 2020 by the Ministry of Education and Science and the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, in the direction of coordinating the activities of the first, preschool level of the education system with the next, primary outlined. Development trends of modern higher education in Ukraine in the context of European integration: competence orientation, integrative approach to teaching professional disciplines, practical orientation, priority of moral and spiritual development of the teacher, use in the educational process of innovative, partner, interactive forms of work with students are identified. Strategic vectors of training of future preschool educators in Ukraine: academic integrity, integration of the content of educational disciplines, strengthening of ethical and aesthetic component of professional training, practical orientation of educational training, technologicalization and informatization of educational process, orientation of teaching methods on development of leadership skills, critical thinking, responsibility and independence of students in the process of gaining knowledge, readiness for life in the changing conditions of society are presented. The new strategy of training preschool teachers who will work in the conditions of constant transformational changes in society, development of information and nanotechnologies, network learning and communication is based on multiconceptual, interdisciplinary, integrated and systemic approaches. It provides an opportunity for future preschool teachers in the educational process to understand and maintain a balance between the pedagogical traditions of European rationalism and the sensory approaches of Ukrainian folk pedagogy according to the preschool-children education. The main focus of the strategy of training preschool teachers — shifting the emphasis from the teacher’s educational activities to the student’s activities, the transition from reproductive to a productive learning. In some EU countries, these issues have been successfully resolved, so their experience is being effectively implemented in the practice of training future preschool teachers in Ukraine.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to showcase first of the results from the ongoing qualitative research, which focuses on the course of compulsory pre-school education in Czech Republic. This case study describes approaches to compulsory preschool education and tries to contribute to the creation of typology of those approaches. In this article are presented results from interviews with 11 teachers from 3 different types of kindergartens and from 2 preparatory classes at primary schools. Two research questions are answered: how education takes place in the last year of pre-school education according to the teachers. And what are the important factors that relate to compulsory preschool education. The approaches that emerged are whole day school preparation, afternoon school preparation, British approach and morning school preparation. The important factors related to preschool according to teachers are: areas of development, problematic areas, children, needed improvement, parents, assistant teacher, education and planning.
Basic pillars of the concept and strategy of teaching Slovak language and Slovak literature in primary schools with Hungarian as the language of instruction

Abstract:Abstract Slovak language and Slovak literature is a specific subject in schools with Hungarian as the language of instruction and occupies a leading place in the hierarchy of subjects. Its specific role is determined by the fact that Slovak language has the status of a state language in the Slovak Republic, it is the language of the majority, a means of communication, i.e. a tool for communication for citizens of Hungarian nationality with citizens of other nationalities in the Slovak Republic and at the same time it is a second (specific target) language in schools with Hungarian as the language of instruction. Social requirements are taken into account when planning the curriculum and the educational process. Children and pupils of citizens belonging to national minorities and ethnic groups are guaranteed the right to learn the state language. The educational process in schools with the language of instruction of nationalities is carried out in accordance with the instrument of ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. The importance of being able to speak the majority language by members of minorities is supported by a number of European recommendations. The paper deals with the concept and strategy of teaching Slovak language and Slovak literature as well as its central position: helping the overall personal development of students, acquiring habits of good behaviour, especially in the field of speech, positively influencing the development of language-analogous abilities, the development of feelings connected with the language, creativity and positive attitudes towards Slovak language.
The phenomenon of institutional preschool education from the parents’ perspective

Abstract:Abstract In Slovak kindergartens, teachers are increasingly encountering increased diversity from both children and parents. This is due to the introduction of compulsory preschool education from 2021 for all 5-year-old children and the gradual implementation of the vision of inclusive education, which increases the demands on teachers’ approach to children and the search for more effective strategies in mutual communication and cooperation with parents. This has received minimal consideration in the research field, despite the fact that it is the parents who can serve as important allies for teachers in the development and progress of children. The purpose of the present study was to explore parents’ experiences with institutional preschool education and to discover what kindergarten teachers and directors should know about parents with preschooler. Qualitative research was conducted with 7 parents whose experiences were explored using the methods of constellation with figures, semi-structured interview and researcher’s diary. The data collected were analysed and interpreted through an interpretative phenomenological analysis. The results of the research showed that parents’ subjective experience of their children’s preschool education in kindergarten is linked by 5 common themes, which include (1) selection of kindergarten, (2) the adaptation process, (3) teacher’s personality, (4) cooperation with kindergarten, (5) the importance of preschool education, while each theme includes subthemes and quotations that further specify parents’ experiences. At the same time, the research results revealed that institutional preschool education has significant relevance not only in the lives of children, but also for the parents.

Abstract:In 2018 a new, more inclusive concept, of preschool education was adopted in Serbia with plans to implement the change from September 2019 to 2022. This paper examines how the national reform in Early Childhood Education (ECE) was perceived by Hungarian kindergarten pedagogues, who are the largest ethnic minority group in Vojvodina, Serbia. To consider the possible impact this change has on both kindergarten pedagogues and children the research aims were to explore, and to increase scholarly awareness of, potential issues Hungarian ethnic kindergarten pedagogues are facing in their understanding of the new approach. Narratives from Hungarian kindergarten pedagogues who were working with preschool age children were collected. To illuminate different understandings, we propose to apply dialogical self, I positions and intersectionality as a fruitful approach for analysing personal and cultural positioning. Findings show uncertainty, resistance, and sentient ways educators interpret the new programme. Findings also demonstrated many kindergarten pedagogues applied a reflexive method of professional practice that remained unchanged for decades. It was demonstrated that in the professional context, the interactions between different selves, and intersection between different cultures contribute to different positions, and storylines, cumulatively resulting in new we and they positioning. Our recommendation is that further opportunities need to be developed to advance the kindergarten pedagogues’ competencies how to deal with change.
Teacher's Work with Children with Special Needs in Kindergarten

Abstract:The preschool period is a susceptible stage of children's development, and it is essential that children receive the necessary support for their optimal development during this period. This is especially important for children with special educational needs. The present study highlights the importance of early childhood education teachers and teacher assistants to provide optimal conditions for the development of children with special educational needs. Our research includes 148 early childhood education teachers and teacher assistants, who completed a questionnaire about the general tasks they perform when working with children with special educational needs. The results show that while teachers perform various tasks intended for children with special educational needs and cooperate with the kindergarten counselling service, parents and other professionals, they do not feel competent to work with children with special educational needs. Additionally, the results indicate that there are differences between early childhood education teachers and teacher assistants, as the results are more favourable for the former.

The aim of including knowledge and partial topics of traditional folk culture in teaching is mainly to motivate students and arouse their interest in the cultural heritage of their ancestorsand country. We use comparative methods to clarify the relationships between ethnology, pedagogy, ethnopedagogy, and their interconnection in the pedagogical process. We define the primary goals of regional education, methods, and forms of teaching regional education, focusing on interactive forms of teaching. Results and conclusion. The values and the importance of traditional culture should be assessed in terms of the functions of education and training ina broader societal perspective.Regional education should make a significant contribution to the transmission of culture in education. The research results indicate the need to implement ethnopedagogy into the current educational process at all levels of education and scientifically verify its success. Research restrictions. The main research problems or limitations are related to the factthat this subdiscipline has not yet received attention in Slovakia. Originality. The paper presents an original view of ethnopedagogy and regional education issues through the lens of ethnology and pedagogy and defines key subjects of interest focusing on Slovak/Central European needs and contexts.
