What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop a design framework capable of rapidly screening alloy catalysts by combining machine - learning methods and descriptors based on the inherent properties of materials. Specifically, the authors aim to: 1. **Improve the efficiency of catalyst design**: Traditional catalyst design methods, such as density functional theory (DFT) calculations, can provide accurate results, but they are time - consuming in calculations and difficult to be applied on a large scale. Therefore, the authors hope to use machine - learning methods combined with descriptors to achieve rapid screening of a large number of alloy catalysts while maintaining accuracy comparable to DFT calculations. 2. **Understand the structure - performance relationship of alloy catalysts**: The geometric structures of alloy catalysts are complex, and the combinations of different metal elements are diverse, resulting in many potential high - performance catalysts that have not yet been discovered. The authors hope to analyze the descriptors to reveal the size of the active centers in alloy catalysts, the influence of alloying on the adsorption energy, and the coupling mechanisms between different adsorbates and substrates, so as to better understand the structure - performance relationship of alloy catalysts and the reaction mechanism of the CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR). 3. **Provide general design principles**: By establishing a general design framework, which is not only applicable to CO₂RR but can also be extended to other catalytic reactions, to help design efficient and low - cost catalysts. ### Main methods and techniques - **Descriptor selection**: The authors used the electronic descriptor ψ, the geometric descriptor CN, and the characteristic parameter α of the adsorbate. These descriptors can effectively capture the interaction trends between the substrate and the adsorbate. - **Machine - learning algorithm**: Mainly adopted the gradient - boosted regression (GBR) algorithm, which performs well in handling continuous and discrete values, and has strong robustness and less dependence on hyper - parameters. - **Data set**: Used the data set obtained from the literature, including DFT calculation results of different near - surface alloy structures (such as M₃X@M, M - X@M and X@M) to verify the prediction ability of the model. ### Results and discussion - **Model performance**: Through multiple training and testing, the GBR model performed best in predicting the adsorption energy of CO*, with a coefficient of determination R² reaching 0.982, a mean absolute error (MAE) lower than 0.1 eV, a root - mean - square error (RMSE) of about 0.1 eV, and the training time was much shorter than that of DFT calculations. - **Feature importance**: The atomic descriptor ψ plays the most important role in predicting the adsorption energy of CO*, while other local descriptors (χl, SVl and ψl) further supplement the description. - **Model verification**: By comparing with other descriptors (such as the d - band center), the effectiveness of the proposed descriptors was verified. Even without including the d - band center, the prediction error of the model was small, indicating that the proposed descriptors are an effective alternative. In conclusion, this paper proposes an efficient and accurate alloy - catalyst design framework by combining machine - learning and inherent descriptors, providing new ideas and tools for future catalyst design.
