Abstract:By means of high-temperature physical drawing, glasses can be directly drawn into subwavelength-or nanometer-diameter fibers. As-fabricated nanofibers show excellent diameter uniformity and surface smoothness for low-loss optical wave guiding, and may exhibit a series of interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, evanescent guidance and high waveguide dispersion. These fibers provide promising building blocks for photonic applications in optical communications, optical sensing and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofihers are one-dimensional free-standing waveguiding structures with diameters close to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physically drawing glass fiber at high temperature these fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, evident surface field enhancement, and large wavelength/diameter-dependent waveguide dispersion, especially much lower waveguiding loss than all other micro/nanowaveguides with similar geometries. These merits offer them great potentials in applications ranging from near field optical coupling, optical sensing, atom optics, nonlinear optics, laser technology, and optomechanics. In this review, starting from the basic waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofihers, we introduce our recent progress in high precision fiber fabrication and micro/nanofiber-based near field coupling, optical sensors, and nonlinear optical devices. At same time, we also mention relative works from other groups. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief outlook.

Abstract:Abstract (100 Word Limit): When its size goes down to the wavelength of the guided light, an optical nanofibre/nanowire exhibits interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, abnormal dispersion, enhanced surface effects and excellent mechanical flexibilities, which opens opportunities for combining waveguide optics with near-field optics, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, quantum optics and optomechanics on the nanoscale and low power level, and intrigues a variety of novel nanophotonic components/devices. This talk reviews the principles and technological applications of optical nanofibres and nanowires. Future applications of these one-dimensional building blocks for optical communications and sensing are also discussed. Presenter Bio (100 Word Limit): Limin Tong received his BS and MSc degrees in Physics and PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 1991, 1994 and 1997, respectively. In 1997 he joined the Department of Physics, Zhejiang University, China as an assistant professor. In 2001 he joined Mazur group, Harvard University as a visiting scientist, and returned Zhejiang University in 2004. He is currently a professor and director of Department of Optical Engineering at Zhejiang University. His research interest has been in the area of nanophotonics and fibre optics.

Abstract:Silk fibroin (SF) is a structural protein derived from natural silkworm silks. Materials fabricated based on SF usually inherit extraordinary physical and biological properties, including high mechanical strength, toughness, optical transparency, tailorable biodegradability, and biocompatibility. Therefore, SF has attracted interest in the development of sustainable biodevices, especially for emergent bio-electronic technologies. To expand the function of current silk devices, the SF characteristic sequence has been used to synthesize recombinant silk proteins that benefit from SF and other functional peptides, such as stimuli-responsive elastin peptides. In addition to genetic engineering methods, innovated chemistry modification approaches and improved material processing techniques have also been developed for fabricating advanced silk materials with tailored chemical features and nanostructures. Herein, this review summarizes various methods to synthesize functional silk-based materials from different perspectives. This review also highlights the recent advances in the applications of natural and recombinant silks in tissue regeneration, soft robotics, and biosensors, using B. mori SF and silk-elastin-like proteins (SELPs) as examples.

Abstract:Polymer-nanoparticles composites have attracted considerable attention over the years, due to the superior combination performance from both materials. As a versatile natural polymer, silk fibroin has been combined with various nanoparticles. The introduction of nanoparticles brings many optimized and new functionalities to silk fibroin, such as mechanical, biological, thermal, electrical, florescent and magnetical properties. This review focuses on the preparation methods and enhanced properties of silk fibroin-nanoparticle composites, especially their biomedical applications.

Abstract:Biomedical Silk Protein Optics is the subject of intensive research aimed at solving the challenges of traditional medical devices in terms of biocompatibility and performance balance. With significant potential of biomedical applications in the field of drug storage and wound monitoring, it is dedicated to reduce the perturbation of neighbouring tissues. Silk proteins' transparency and biocompatibility make them ideal materials in the field of optical device fabrication, effectively overcoming the challenges posed by conventional materials. In this paper, we explore in detail the complex aspects of design, synthesis and application related to biomedical silk protein optical devices, and comprehensively analyse the potential use of silk protein-centric microstructures (e.g., micropillars, microneedles, and photonic crystals) in the development of optical devices. It also offers insights into the challenges of applying silk protein optical devices to healthcare and their future trends, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of the advances, potential impacts and emerging research directions in the field of biomedical silk protein optical devices.

Abstract:Silk proteins are natural macromolecules with unique properties.Due to excellent physiochemical properties and abundant sources,they are playing an increasingly important role in the field of biomaterials.More and more biomedical studies were conducted by using silk proteins as biomaterials,and significant progress has been achieved.This article reviews the different kinds of silk proteins used for biomaterials and processing techniques for transforming natural silk proteins into various biomedical scaffolds,and summarizes the latest advances of international groups focusing on silk-based material research.In addition,the development history of silk-based biomaterials and their application status in tissue engineering are elaborated.Furthermore,the prospects and trends of silk-based scaffold biomaterials are described.It is anticipated to provide good references for increasing the added value of silk industry and extending the application of silkbased biomaterials in clinical application,wishing that the silk fiber with thousands years of history expand their application space and scope continuously.

Abstract:Conventional integrated photonic devices are fabricated on rigid semiconductor or dielectric substrates and are therefore inherently incompatible with soft biological tissues. Over the past few years, we have developed a suite of active and passive photonic devices and systems integrated on plastic substrates which can be bent, twisted, and stretched without compromising their optical performance. Here we review the latest progress in this emerging field, and discuss the rational material and mechanical engineering principles underlying the extraordinary flexibility of these photonic structures. Leveraging these design strategies, we demonstrated bendable glass waveguide circuits, flexible waveguide-integrated nanomembrane photodetectors, and stretchable photonics.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, the integration of graphene and related two-dimensional (2D) materials in optical fibers have stimulated significant advances in all-fiber photonics and optoelectronics. The conventional passive silica fiber devices with 2D materials are empowered for enhancing light-matter interactions and are applied for manipulating light beams in respect of their polarization, phase, intensity and frequency, and even realizing the active photo-electric conversion and electro-optic modulation, which paves a new route to the integrated multifunctional all-fiber optoelectronic system. This article reviews the fast-progress field of hybrid 2D-materials-optical-fiber for the opto-electro-mechanical devices. The challenges and opportunities in this field for future development are discussed.
Bioactive silk protein biomaterial systems for optical devices

Abstract:Silk-based biomaterial systems have been previously explored for a variety of medical and nonmedical materials needs. The unique biophysical features of silks provide options to generate highly tailored structures and morphologies with this unique family of fibrous proteins. To exploit these features, we have optimized the all aqueous processing of silk fibroin into novel surface nanopatterned protein materials. We have exploited control of this nanomorphology to optimize the optical features of these silk protein systems. We demonstrate control of surface morphology down to 125 nm, with fidelity over large length scales. This surface nanopatterning allows the silk protein to be formed into diffractive optics such as diffraction gratings, pattern generators, and lenses due to novel aqueous processing into optically clear materials via control of beta sheet crystallinity. Further, we incorporate biological components, such as hemoglobin and the enzyme peroxidase, during the process of forming the silk diffraction gratings. The ambient processing of the silk protein in water, in combination with these bioactive components, allows these entrained molecules to retain activity and provide added functions and selectivity to the optically active silk films. Thus, combinations of biochemical and optical readout is feasible and provides in a single, disposable/all degradable element with both spectral discrimination and biological function. These new surface nanopatterned, bioactive silk protein-based material systems offer a unique combination of features potentially useful for a range of biosensor needs, particularly when considered in concert with the remarkable mechanical properties of these proteins, their biocompatibility, and controllable biodegradation.

Abstract:While the vast majority of integrated photonic devices are traditionally fabricated on rigid substrates, photonic integration of both passive and active photonic devices on flexible polymer substrates has been demonstrated in recent years, and its applications in imaging, sensing and optical interconnects are being actively pursued. This paper presents an overview of the emerging field of mechanically flexible photonics, where we examine material processing and mechanical design rationales dictated by application-specific optical functionalities. The examples include semiconductor nanomembranes which serve as the key enabling material for hybrid inorganic-organic flexible active photonics, and monolithically integrated passive photonic structures fabricated from semiconductors, polymers, or amorphous materials. Technical challenges and further research opportunities related to materials engineering and device integration on flexible substrates are also discussed. (c) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Flexible photonic devices, which arc bendable, foldable, and even stretchable, arc not limited to the rigid physical state constraints of traditional optoelectronic devices and thus unique tunable optoelectronic properties could be achieved, which greatly expands the development and practical implementation of traditional optoelectronic devices. Combining with new functional optical materials, novel device integration technologies, and the advantages of photonic devices over electronic devices in material sensing specificity, channel capacity, and resistance to electromagnetic interference, flexible photonic devices show great research and application value in emerging and interdisciplinary fields such as wearable sensing, high-speed optical interconnect, light field manipulation, and optogenetic applications in biology. However, challenges including the fabrication difficulties, mechanical flexibility limitation, and the degree of integration exist in current flexible photonic technologies. This paper briefly reviews the recent progress on flexible photonic materials and devices to address those challenges. And further development and application demonstration for the flexible photonics has also been summarized and discussed.

Abstract:Flexible electronic devices are necessary for applications involving unconventional interfaces, such as soft and curved biological systems, in which traditional silicon-based electronics would confront a mechanical mismatch. Biological polymers offer new opportunities for flexible electronic devices by virtue of their biocompatibility, environmental benignity, and sustainability, as well as low cost. As an intriguing and abundant biomaterial, silk offers exquisite mechanical, optical, and electrical properties that are advantageous toward the development of next-generation biocompatible electronic devices. The utilization of silk fibroin is emphasized as both passive and active components in flexible electronic devices. The employment of biocompatible and biosustainable silk materials revolutionizes state-of-the-art electronic devices and systems that currently rely on conventional semiconductor technologies. Advances in silk-based electronic devices would open new avenues for employing biomaterials in the design and integration of high-performance biointegrated electronics for future applications in consumer electronics, computing technologies, and biomedical diagnosis, as well as human-machine interfaces.
