Abstract:We present here a new programmable polymerization route for the synthesis of new conjugated polymers via one pot reaction route. The three component polycoupling reactions of terephthalaldehyde and dibenzylamine with 4,4'diethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl, bis(4-ethynylphenyl)dimethylsilane, 1,2-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene, N,N-bis(4ethynylphenyl)aniline, or 2,5-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,1-dimethyl-3,4-diphenylsilole are catalyzed by indium(III) chloride in oxylene at 140 C, affording soluble polymers with well-defined structures and high molecular weights (M up to 51 200) in high yields (up to 96.9%). Model reaction was carried out to elucidate the chemical structures of the polymers. The resulting polymers are processable and enjoy high thermal stability. The polymers carrying tetraphenylethene and silole units are weakly emissive in solutions but become strong emitters when aggregated in poor solvents or fabricated as thin films in the solid state, displaying a phenomenon of aggregation enhanced emission characteristic Thin films of the polymers show high refractive indices (n = 1.7529-1.6041) in a wide wavelength region of 400-1600 nm with low optical dispersions (D' down to 0.005). The polymers are readily metallified by complexation of their triple bonds with cobalt octacarbonyls. Pyrolysis of the resulting organometallic polymers at high temperature under inert atmosphere generates nanostructured ceramics with high magnetic susceptibility (M-s up to 80.7 emu/g) and near zero coercivity (H-c down to 0.19 kOe).

Abstract:Cyclotrimerization of alkynes to aromatics represents a promising approach to two-dimensional conjugated networks due to its single-reactant and atom-economy attributes, in comparison with other multicomponent coupling reactions. However, the reaction mechanism of alkyne cyclotrimerization has not yet been well understood due to characterization challenges. In this work, we take a surface reaction approach to study fundamental polymerization mechanism by using a diyne monomer named 4,4'-diethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl as a test bed. We have succeeded in directly characterizing reactants, intermediates, and their reaction products with the aid of scanning tunneling microscope, which allows us to gain mechanistic insights into the reaction pathways. By combining with density functional theory calculation, our result has revealed for the first time that the polycyclotrimerization is a two-step [2+2+2] cyclization reaction. This work provides an in-depth understanding of polycyclotrimerization process at the atomic level, offering a new avenue to design and construct of single-atom-thick conjugated networks.

Abstract:Concurrent construction of multiple types of bonds/ linkages in one reaction is a promising protocol to build (macro)molecule with complex architecture but fewer steps. In this article, concurrent construction of C=C and C=C linkages in organic and polymerization reactions has been explored. The orthogonal reductive co-coupling of various pairs of monofunctional benzylic gem-dibromide/gem-tribromide compounds promoted by Cu(0)/polyamine has been achieved, which leads to concurrent construction of C=C and C=C linkages in two molecules. The orthogonality of the coupling reaction has been extended to the polymerization of heterobifunctional monomers having both gem-dibromide and gem-tribromide groups, which results in formation of vinylene-alt-ethynylene-bridged polymers, such as arylene-vinylene-alt-arylene-ethynylene copolymers. Application of the current protocol in polymerization leads to a facile strategy for the construction of two carbon-carbon multiple linkages from monomers without C=C and C=C groups under mild conditions. It is also a simple system with the minimum number of functional groups, two, to achieve orthogonal polymerization.

Abstract:The precise sequence control of polymer chain is an important research topic of polymer chemistry. Although some methods such as iterative synthesis and supramolecular polymerization have been developed to fabricate sequence-controllable polymer, it is still a great challenge to consecutively prepare multiple supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures. In this work, through the reasonable utilization of assembly motifs, we integrated multiple host-guest recognitions and metal coordination interactions to prepare different sequence-controlled supramolecular polymers by a multistep assembly strategy. This research provides inspiration for the design and preparation of supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures.

Covalent Polymerization of Supramonomer: A New Way for Fabrication of Supramolecular Polymers

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers are polymeric arrays of monomeric units that held together by highly directional and reversible noncovalent interactions, resulting in polymeric properties in solution and bulk. Due to the dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions, supramolecular polymers display fascinating properties such as reversibility, adaptiveness, self-healing, and stimuli-responsiveness, which are different from their covalent counterparts. These attributes have endowed supramolecular polymers with great potential applications in the field of functional materials, and also have motivated chemists to construct a variety of supramolecular polymers and supramolecular polymeric materials. In conventional supramolecular polymerization, bifunctional covalent monomers should be first synthesized and then supramolecularly polymerized. In contrast, we have proposed a new method for constructing supramolecular polymers by covalent polymerization of supramonomers. Bifunctional supramonomers are first fabricated through noncovalent interactions and then subjected to covalent polymerization. The driving forces for the fabrication of supramonomers are multiple hydrogen bonds, host-guest interactions, and others. This feature article is aimed to summarize the ways for covalent polymerization of supramonomers, including click polymerization and enzyme-triggered condensation of supramonomers based on the host-guest interactions of cucurbit[8]uril and tripeptide Phe-Gly-Gly derivatives, photo-triggered cycloaddition of anthracene end-capped supramonomers driven by pillar[5] arene based host-guest interactions, and olefin metathesis polymerization of quadruple hydrogen bonded supramonomers. The advantage of the covalent polymerization of supramonomers is to transfer a not-easy tractable supramolecular polymerization to an easy tractable covalent polymerization. We envision that more noncovalent interactions with higher binding affinity could be used to drive the formation of supramonomers; and more controlled covalent reactions with higher efficiency and milder reaction conditions could be used in the covalent polymerization of supramonomers. By utilizing this method, the controllable fabrication of supramolecular polymers could be realized, which is vital to the study of structure-property relationship of supramolecular polymers, as well as to the design and the construction of functional supramolecular polymers.

Abstract:Over the past decade, major progress in supramolecular polymerization has had a substantial effect on the design of functional soft materials. However, despite recent advances, most studies are still based on a preconceived notion that supramolecular polymerization follows a step-growth mechanism, which precludes control over chain length, sequence, and stereochemical structure. Here we report the realization of chain-growth polymerization by designing metastable monomers with a shape-promoted intramolecular hydrogen-bonding network. The monomers are conformationally restricted from spontaneous polymerization at ambient temperatures but begin to polymerize with characteristics typical of a living mechanism upon mixing with tailored initiators. The chain growth occurs stereoselectively and therefore enables optical resolution of a racemic monomer.

Abstract:Among various two‐dimensional (2D) materials, organic 2D polymers have attracted much attention, owing to their specific properties, such as lightweight, good flexibility, adjustable structure, and high adaptability. In recent years, more and more scientists have devoted to the research on their structural design, synthesis, characterization, and potential properties. However, in contrast to traditional one‐dimensional (1D) and three‐dimensional (3D) network macromolecules, the synthesis of 2D structures presents a challenge to polymer chemists, because polymerization usually takes place in a spatially random manner in solution‐phase synthesis. In this review, we will focus on the synthesis methods of organic 2D materials, which have played a pivotal role since the beginning of the development of this field. We will highlight the representative examples according to the different types of polymers, including supramolecular organic 2D layers and covalent organic 2D polymers, and identify possible future research directions. 2D organic materials, which include supramolecular organic 2D layers and covalent organic 2D polymers have attracted extensive attention of scientists. The synthesis methods of organic 2D materials have played a pivotal role since the beginning of the development of this field. Supramolecular organic 2D layers can be formed by cross‐linking between structural units through noncovalent interactions and self‐assembly of polymers or small molecules. The preparation of independent covalent 2D polymers can be divided into three categories: “bottom–up” interfacial synthesis, “top–down” stripping synthesis and direct solution‐phase synthesis.

Abstract:Understanding and mimicking the processes of life has been an endeavour for generations of scientists across all the fields of science and technology. Artificially designing the complexity of living cells from purely synthetic materials poses a significant challenge due to their complex bottom-up assembly. We show that a solvothermal reaction of pre-formed sodium coordinated pyrene and porphyrin based supramolecular structures with azobenzene supramolecules in a one-pot reaction results in an array of superstructures with controlled morphology, featuring curved surfaces and extrinsic chirality. They respond as a single unit to external triggers, such as light, exhibiting transformations to macro-scale extrinsic chirality, as well as bursting and folding behaviours. Finally, we show the growth of two different types of superstructures in parallel by exploiting liquid-liquid phase separation.

Abstract:Multicomponent reactions are of substantial significance not only for organic synthesis but also for polymer synthesis due to their more bond-forming events per synthetic operation. Generally due to that there are two or more reactions in one multicomponent reaction system, synergistic catalysis, in which the two or more reactions are activated by two or more different catalysts at the same time, is very important for achieving high-efficiency transformations. However, achieving synergistic catalysis via using two or more different catalyst simultaneously is a great challenge. Here, we propose a new reactant-synergistically catalyzed multicomponent reaction, in which the units coming from the reactant can synergistically catalyze the two reactions at the same time. Moreover, this multicomponent reaction can be extended to multicomponent polymerization, which is a very promising method for the preparation of functional polymers with defined-sequence.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) organic assemblies possess many intriguing properties such as planar structure, extended surface, flexibility and tailorability. The fabrication of 2D organic structures in a controlled manner is crucial to realize their potential functions and applications. In recent years, we have developed three methods to fabricate 2D organic assemblies through the rational design of building blocks. Firstly, hydrotropic anions will induce cationic bolaamphiphiles to form 2D assemblies, because such anions can insert their hydrophobic parts into the assemblies and weaken the electrostatic repulsion between adjacent headgroups. Secondly, the topology of supra-amphiphiles can be easily tuned because of the dynamic nature of non-covalent bonds, thus providing a facile approach for the fabrication of 2D assemblies. Thirdly, through molecular modification or introduction of new non-covalent bonds, we can lower the dimensionality of three-dimensional (3D) networks to form 2D assemblies. It is highly anticipated that these methods can be further applied for the preparation of functional 2D nano/micro materials for optoelectronics.
Pathway Control of Π‐conjugated Supramolecular Polymers by Incorporating Donor‐Acceptor Functionality

Abstract:Controlling the nanoscale orientation of π‐conjugated systems remains challenging due to the complexity of multiple energy landscapes involved in the supramolecular assembly process. In this study, we have developed an effective strategy for programming the pathways of π‐conjugated supramolecular polymers, by incorporating both electron‐rich methoxy‐ or methanthiol‐benzene as donor unit and electron‐poor cyano‐vinylenes as acceptor units on the monomeric structure. It leads to the formation of parallel‐stacked supramolecular polymers as the metastable species through homomeric donor/acceptor packing, which convert to slip‐stacked supramolecular polymers as the thermodynamically stable species facilitated by heteromeric donor‐acceptor packing. By further investigating the external seed‐induced kinetic‐to‐thermodynamic transformation behaviors, our findings suggest that the donor‐acceptor functionality on the seed structure is crucial for accelerating pathway conversion. This is achieved by eliminating the initial lag phase in the supramolecular polymerization process. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into designing molecular structures that control aggregation pathways of π‐conjugated nanostructures.

Abstract:Cooperative supramolecular polymerization of π-conjugated compounds into one-dimensional nanostructures has received tremendous attentions in recent years. It is commonly achieved by incorporating amide linkages into the monomeric structures, which provide hydrogen bonds for intermolecular non-covalent complexation. Herein, the effect of amide linkages is elaborately studied, by comparing supramolecular polymerization behaviors of two structurally similar monomers with the same platinum(II) acetylide cores. As compared to the N-phenyl benzamide linkages, N-[(1S)-1-phenylethyl] benzamide linkages give rise to effective chirality transfer behaviors due to the closer distances between the chiral units and the platinum(II) acetylide core. They also provide stronger intermolecular hydrogen bonding strength, which consequently brings higher thermo-stability and enhanced gelation capability for the resulting supramolecular polymers. Supramolecular polymerization is further strengthened by varying the monomers from monotopic to ditopic structures. Hence, with the judicious modulation of structural parameters, the current study opens up new avenues for the rational design of supramolecular polymeric systems.

Abstract:Tremendous developments, ranging from new synthetic strategies, properties, and novel functional applications, have emerged in the field of stimuli-responsive polymeric materials. A variety of highly efficient chemical methodologies have been exploited to synthesize stimuli-responsive polymers, aiming to control their molecular weight, polydispersity, chemical composition, monomer sequence, and chain topologies. Of particular interest is the emerging strategy of supramolecular assembly-assisted polymer synthesis, which possesses combined advantages such as facile accessibility, design versatility, multifunctional integration, and promising functions. In this trend article, recent advances are elaborated concerning the fabrication of stimuli-responsive functional polymers assisted by supramolecular self-assembly. The fabrication of three main types of responsive polymers, namely, linear polymers, non-linear shaped polymers, and crosslinked nanostructures, aided by templates of supramolecular assemblies will be discussed.
