Abstract:Selective oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a promising pathway for glycerol utilization. In order to fabricate a highly stable supported Au catalyst for the reaction, a series of CuO-ZnO mixed oxides derived from different minerals were synthesized. Then, the Au/CuO-ZnO catalysts were prepared by the deposition-precipitation. High yield of DHA (70%) and conversion of glycerol (76%) were obtained over the rosasite-derived Au/CuO-ZnO catalyst. While over the aurichalcite-derived Au/CuO-ZnO catalyst, the yield of DHA was only 20%. By means of XRD, H 2 -TPR, TEM, XPS, CO 2 -TPD characterization, it was found that the higher yield of DHA was attributed to the stronger interaction between CuO and ZnO, higher dispersion of Au species, higher content of Au 0 and proper amount of surface basic sites. The rosasite-derived Au/CuO-ZnO catalyst also showed good stability and no obvious decrease in reactivity and DHA selectivity could be seen after five recycles. The stable structure of the support not only enhanced the interaction between CuO-ZnO that stabilized the support itself, but also improved the interaction between Au and the support, further stabilizing the particle size and chemical valence of Au.

Oxidative Lactonization of Diethylene Glycol to High-Value-added Product 1, 4-Dioxan-2-one Promoted by a Highly Efficacious and Selective Catalyst ZnO-ZnCr2O4

Abstract:For the first time, the desired product 1,4-dioxan-2-one (PDO) was successfully synthesized via the oxidative lactonization of diethylene glycol (DEG) under mild conditions. After screening several catalysts (M-Cr-O), we found ZnO-ZnCr2O4 (Zn-Cr-O) catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance and this chemical transformation obtained moderate to excellent selectivity (96.22%) and conversion (81.95%) within a 4 h reaction time. Subsequently, the morphology of calcined M-Cr-O was investigated by FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, TEM, and N-2 adsorption-desorption tests for further study on catalytic performances. The strength and quantity of acid and base sites over Zn-Cr-O were also detected by NH3-TPD and CO2-TPD, and it was worth noting that the acid/base sites over ZnO-ZnCr2O4 (Zn-Cr-O) catalyst could promote this catalytic process well. Recycle studies demonstrated exceptional stability and recyclability of the prepared catalyst without significant efficiency and selectivity loss after 10 consecutive cycles.
Specific Selectivity of Au-Catalyzed Oxidation of Glycerol and Other C3-Polyols in Water Without the Presence of a Base

Abstract:A big challenge in upgrading bio-oxygenate platform molecules is to develop catalysts for the selective oxidation of a nonterminal HO-bonded carbon atom in polyols. We report herein the first finding of a specific selectivity of oxide-supported nano-Au catalysts for dihydroxyacetone (DHA) production in glycerol oxidation in water without NaOH. Though the support nature (Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2, NiO, and CuO) significantly affects the Au activity, a highly active Au/CuO catalyst offering DHA yields up to 80% at 40–50 °C has been identified. Rich data are provided to clarify that DHA is the only primary product of glycerol oxidation. This propensity of nano-Au for oxidizing the HO-bonded secondary (central) carbon is further verified by comparing the oxidation of propanediols and propanols. Molecular insight into the reactions is given on the basis of the kinetic isotopic effect study of deuterium on the oxidation of 2-propanol, uncovering an unanticipated chemistry of Au catalysis.

Abstract:Efficient conversion of glycerol to 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is the affirmation and guarantee of the feasible development of biodiesel industry, but the biocompatibility of catalyst must be considered due to the wide application of DHA in food and medicine industries. In this work, an environmentally benign biosynthesis approach with Syringa oblata Lindl. (SoL) leaf extract was employed to fabricate Au/CuO catalysts for the oxidation of glycerol to DHA. The biosynthesized SoL-Au/CuO catalysts were characterized and the effects of plant extracts concentration, gold loading, calcination temperature and reaction conditions on the catalytic performance were systematically analyzed. High catalytic performance with glycerol conversion rate of 95.7% and DHA selectivity of 77.9% can be attained under optimum conditions. This work provides the first example of preparing biocompatible catalyst for the thermal catalytic oxidation of glycerol to DHA, which can not only reach efficient conversion of glycerol and selectivity to DHA, but also is simple, green, environmentally friendly and promising.

Abstract:In this work, N-doped porous carbon stabilized CuxO (Cu-NPCs) were synthesized by a one-pot method using copper nitrate as copper precursor with the aid of Pluronic F127 under acidic condition. The characterization results confirmed that CuxO species (CuO and Cu2O) existed in NPC in a highly dispersed state due to the strong interaction between CuxO and the doped N atoms. The obtained Cu-NPCs were used as supports to prepare Au catalysts for glycerol (GLY) oxidation to dihydroxyacetone (DHA) under base-free conditions. During the reaction, GLY preferentially adsorbed onto Au nanoparticles via the secondary OH groups due to the porous characteristics of the supports, the enhanced surface basicity from the N functionalities accelerates the alkoxide formation by abstracting proton from GLY, and the surface Cu+ sites instead of Au nanoparticles activate O2 molecules to produce active oxygen species, as a result, Au/Cu-NPC-15 %-H, which is the best catalyst in Au/Cu-NPCs, exhibited much higher catalytic activity and selectivity than those of Au/CuO. Moreover, due to the stabilization of CuxO species by NPC, relatively stable surface Cu+ content, and the strong interaction between Au nanoparticles and the supports, Au/Cu-NPC-15 %-H also possessed much better catalytic stability than that of Au/CuO during four consecutive catalytic runs.

Abstract:The oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone (DHA) represents an efficient and economical process route. Although preparing Au/CuO catalysts from plant constituents has emerged as a novel approach for synthesizing biocompatible products, the complexity of plant constituents means that the active components still need to be clarified, making it challenging to control catalytic activity. In this study, we effectively separated and identified the active components of Syringa oblata Lindl. (SoL) leaf using column chromatography, and synthesized a series of Au/CuO catalysts from the different separated samples. Glycerol catalytic evaluation experiments showed that the S3 fraction, mainly consisting of phenolic substances, exhibited the highest catalytic activity, with a glycerol conversion rate of 86.6% and DHA selectivity of 82.0%, exceeding the activity of most current catalysts. A series of experiments and characterizations demonstrated the differences in reducibility and protective ability among the separated samples, and the preparation and glycerol reaction conditions for optimal performance are systematically optimized. This work provides in-depth insights into the preparation of catalysts using plant-based methods.

Abstract:Catalytic transformation of glycerol to value-added products has attracted the attention of scientists all over the world. Among various transformations, selective oxidation of glycerol with molecular oxygen to dihydroxyacetone, glyceric acid, glyceraldehydes, and tartronic acid is challenging both from the viewpoint of academic research and industrial application. Herein, we review the recent progresses in the selective oxidation of glycerol under base-free conditions. Those catalysts widely reported for the selective oxidation of the terminal hydroxyl and secondary hydroxyl groups in glycerol, such as monometallic Au, Pt, and Pd NPs, and bimetallic Au-Pt, Au-Pd, Pt-Bi, Pt-Sb, and Pt-Cu, were compared and discussed in detail. The reaction mechanism over Pt-based catalysts, possible catalyst deactivation, and the corresponding improvements are presented. Further, the recent progresses in the continuous oxidation of glycerol in fixed bed reactors and its excellent selectivity in the formation of dihydroxyacetone are highlighted.

Abstract:Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) glycerol oxidation offers a sustainable approach to produce dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as a valuable chemical, which can find use in cosmetic, pharmaceutical industries, etc. However, it still suffers from the low selectivity (≤60%) that substantially limits the application. Here, we report the PEC oxidation of glycerol to DHA with a selectivity of 75.4% over a heterogeneous photoanode of Bi2O3 nanoparticles on TiO2 nanorod arrays (Bi2O3/TiO2). The selectivity of DHA can be maintained at ∼65% under a relatively high conversion of glycerol (∼50%). The existing p–n junction between Bi2O3 and TiO2 promotes charge transfer and thus guarantees high photocurrent density. Experimental combined with theoretical studies reveal that Bi2O3 prefers to interact with the middle hydroxyl of glycerol that facilitates the selective oxidation of glycerol to DHA. Comprehensive reaction mechanism studies suggest that the reaction follows two parallel pathways, including electrophilic OH* (major) and lattice oxygen (minor) oxidations. Finally, we designed a self-powered PEC system, achieving a DHA productivity of 1.04 mg cm–2 h–1 with >70% selectivity and a H2 productivity of 0.32 mL cm–2 h–1. Abstract:Oxidation of the secondary O–H bond of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone is an important reaction in the production of high-value-added chemicals. The heterogeneous catalytic oxidation route using supported Au as a catalyst in this crucial reaction has attracted considerable attention. However, targeted activation of the secondary O–H bond and satisfactory catalytic efficacy remain considerable challenges. This work reports layered double hydroxide (LDH) supported Au catalysts for the targeted activation of the secondary O–H bond and provides deep insights into the active sites and the roles of the LDH support in glycerol selective oxidation. By virtue of the tailorable chemical composition of the LDH brucite-like layer, Zn2Fe-, Co2Al-, Zn2Al-, Zn2Ga-, and Mg2Al-LDHs, displaying varied surface basic densities and hydroxyl vacancies (VOH), were applied as supports for Au nanoparticles in this work. A glycerol conversion of 72.9 ± 0.2% and a dihydroxyacetone selectivity of 63.8 ± 0.2% were achieved on ZnGa-LDH-supported Au. In addition to Au0, surface Aun+ (Au+ and Au3+) species are abundant in the interfacial MII–O–Aun+ linkages. Detailed investigations verify the cooperation between the surface basic sites on the LDH support for the activation of the secondary O–H bonds and the interfacial MII–O–Au+ sites for the activation of the secondary C–H bonds. Abstract:The activation of molecular oxygen is a critical step in gold-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of alcohols. In this paper, we demonstrate that the charge of Au-adsorbed oxygen as well as the length of the O-O bond provides a useful descriptor for predicting effective catalysts for glycerol oxidation under base-free conditions. ZnO was theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed to be the most effective support for Au to activate molecular oxygen and thus to catalyze aerobic oxidation of glycerol. Kinetic studies as well as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra indicate that the as-generated O-2(-) species on the surface of Au/ZnO could selectively abstract protons from the central hydroxyl group of glycerol to form dihydroxyacetone (DHA), resulting in a selectivity to DHA of up to 85%.

Abstract:High-performance electrocatalysts with excellent activity and selectivity hold the key to the electrochemical conversion of glycerol. Herein, well-defined bimetallic Au@Ag and trimetallic PdAu@Ag coreshelled nanoparticles were fabricated using a seed-mediated growth process and further examined as electrocatalysts for glycerol oxidation in both alkaline and acidic solutions. The activity of the catalysts was evaluated via cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometric measurements. The Au@Ag and PdAu@Ag nanoparticles are highly active in alkaline solutions, but inactive in acidic solutions. In alkaline solutions, the PdAu@Ag and Au@Ag nanoparticles show current densities of 3.94 and 2.57 mA cm(-2), which are 4.3 and 25.7 times those of the commercial Pd/C and Au/C catalysts, respectively. The products of glycerol electro-oxidation were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Three major products, namely dihydroxyacetone (DHA), glyceric acid, glyceraldehyde and five minor products including oxalate acid, tartronic acid, formic acid, glycolic acid (GA) and glyoxylic acid were detected. Notably, a remarkable DHA selectivity of 70.1% was obtained from the PdAu@Ag catalyst at 0.9 V. The Au@Ag yields the largest GA selectivity of 31.6% at 1.1 V. High DHA Selectivity and Low-Cost Electrode for Glycerol Oxidation: CuO Regulates MnO2 Electron Density to Promote DHA Desorption

Abstract:Glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) is an attractive alternative reaction for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the electrochemical water splitting and can be used to generate high-value products. However, the development of GOR electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and low cost is challenging. In this research, a self-supported copper-manganese electrode (MnO2-CuO/CF) was developed, which attains a current density of 10.7mAcm-2 at a low potential of 1.3V, while yielding 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA), with a selectivity of 60%. DFT calculations reveal the synergistic effect between CuO and MnO2, enhancing glycerol adsorption. Additionally, the overlap configuration of CuO and MnO2 results in a lower electron density on MnO2, preventing further oxidation and increasing DHA selectivity. By coupling GOR and water electrolysis, the dual output of high value-added organic products and high-purity hydrogen can be realized, which provides a new idea for green hydrogen production and electrochemical synthesis of high value-added chemicals.
Promoting the Effect of Au on the Selective Hydrogenolysis of Glycerol to 1,3-Propanediol over the Pt/WO x /Al 2 O 3 Catalyst

Abstract:The selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) is an important yet challenging reaction because it requires the selective cleavage of the sterically hindered secondary C–O bond of glycerol. In this work, we have developed a new catalyst, 0.1Au-2Pt/7.5W/Al, which affords both high glycerol conversion (77.5%) and 1,3-PDO selectivity (54.8%), which are significantly higher than the Au-free counterpart. HAADF-STEM reveals that the structure of 0.1Au-2Pt/7.5W/Al is characterized with ∼2 nm Pt NPs decorated with Au-WO x at the periphery, where the Au additive exists most likely as single atoms. Chemisorption and XPS show that the electron transfer from W to Au can help to weaken the strong metal support interaction (SMSI) between Pt and WO x , and thus greatly enlarges the exposed Pt surface and increases the H-spillover capacity. The 2-butanol dehydration in H2 reveals that the H-spillover capacity is proportional to the number of Brönsted acid sites, which, in conjunction with the only water desorption in H2-TPD results, strongly suggests that the active sites for breaking the secondary C–O bond of glycerol should be Brönsted acid sites generated by the H-spillover at the interface between Pt and WO x , and the modification by the Au additive increases the number of interfacial sites, and thus enhances the 1,3-PDO yield.

Abstract:Glycerol is a significant by-product of biodiesel production and a functional molecule with three hydroxyl groups. Glycerol can be transformed through different catalytic processes, among which the selective oxidation of glycerol over heterogeneous catalyst is appealing due to its environmental friendliness and the facile production of various value-added products from glycerol. Owing to the structural sensitivity of the reaction, the activity and products selectivity not only depend on the active metal sites, but also is affected by many other factors, such as the pH of the reaction system, the structure and characters of metal and support. This article provides a comprehensive review of recent developments on glycerol selective oxidation over supported noble metal catalysts. Critical attention is paid to the influence of metal-support and metal-metal interactions on the electronic and geometrical structure of catalysts and the consequent catalytic performances, which is conducive to better understanding of the reaction mechanism and more rational design of catalyst to enhance the catalytic activity and selectivity of desired products, such as 1,3-dihydroxyacetone.

A review of aerobic glycerol oxidation processes using heterogeneous catalysts: a sustainable pathway for the production of dihydroxyacetone

Abstract:The world's biodiesel increasing production is leading to the accumulation of its main by-product, crude glycerol, with almost no economic value, which valorization is crucial to increase biodiesel production sustainability and competitiveness. Glycerol is a potential platform chemical, with several valorization routes identified. Among them, selective catalytic aerobic oxidation is an attractive and sustainable solution, as high added value products ensure the process robustness against raw material price fluctuations. When glycerol's secondary hydroxyl group is selectively oxidized, dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is obtained. DHA is a high added value compound, used in cosmetics as the active compound in sunless skin tanning lotions, and its current industrial production by bio-fermentation is not satisfactory; therefore a more efficient production process is needed to overcome the market deficit. The state-of-the-art of DHA production by glycerol aerobic catalytic oxidation in the liquid phase with water as solvent was reviewed and, although it is still in the lab-scale phase, some routes to reach a robust commercial application were already suggested. For DHA production, catalysts should be active under base free conditions, in order to achieve high DHA selectivity. Promoted Pt nanoparticles, as Pt-Bi and Pt-Sb supported in carbon and mesoporous materials, and Au nanoparticles, supported late transition metal oxides as Au/CuO and Au/ZnO, are among the most promising catalysts for high DHA yield processes. For a better understanding of the main variables associated with this process, the effect of catalyst support, particle size, preparation and activation methods, and catalyst deactivation problems were analyzed. In addition, the reaction conditions effect in catalyst performance, including the presence of crude glycerol impurities was considered. Finally, the main studies regarding DHA continuous flow production were reviewed, identifying the major obstacles to overcome, so that commercial DHA production processes through glycerol aerobic catalytic oxidation can finally be implemented.

Abstract:Glycerol is considered as a significant green platform chemical, and many efforts have been devoted to design and prepare the efficient catalysts to convert glycerol to glyceric acid; however, the active site as well as reaction mechanism of glycerol oxidation remains rather ambiguous in terms of different oxygen sources. Herein, we studied the oxidation reaction of glycerol to glyceric acid over the catalytic systems of Au/CeO2− x and Pt/CeO2− x on periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculation in detail. By the optimization of catalyst structure models and comparison of substrate adsorption configurations, the interfacial sites of supported catalysts (Au/CeO2− x and Pt/CeO2− x ) are regarded as the intrinsic active sites. Potential energy curve confirms that the reaction mechanism of glycerol oxidation includes two main pathways: OH− and O2 as oxygen sources in base and base-free environment, respectively. Mechanism studies indicate that Au/CeO2− x interface facilitates the dehydrogenation of C−H/O−H bond, which further promotes the formation of glyceraldehyde. Moreover, Pt/CeO2− x is favorable for the transfer of intramolecular H, resulting in excellent catalytic performance for the oxidation of glyceraldehyde to glyceric acid. The O2 − was involved in oxidative dehydrogenation as active oxygen in base-free condition, and Pt/CeO2− x was more favorable for base-free glycerol oxidation. This work offers detailed insights into interfacial synergy effects of supported catalytic systems and the reaction mechanism of glycerol oxidation, which will pave the way for the selection of solvent conditions toward selective oxidation reaction.

Abstract:Biomass glycerol is an important raw material for many available chemicals, such as 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO is considered as a sustainable process with renewable potential application. In this paper, a series of bimetallic PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3 were prepared and the structures of catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM and CO2-TPD. By measuring the activity of the catalyst, we found that PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3 (Pd:Cu:KF=0.05:1:0.5) can be used as an efficient catalyst for hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO, with 98.3% selectivity and nearly 100% conversion (200°C, 2.5MPa initial H2 pressure, 20h).
Au‐Promoted Pt nanoparticles supported on MgO / SBA ‐15 as an efficient catalyst for selective oxidation of glycerol

Abstract:A systematic study of Au‐promoted and unpromoted Pt/MgO/SBA‐15 catalyst is developed to separate the promoter effect from electron transfer effect between Au and Pt. Multi‐characterizations revealed that Au and Pt metals in these bimetallic catalysts mainly exist in the form of alloy, and the main role of Au is to reduce the size of AuPt alloy nanoparticles, thus enhancing the adsorption and activation of intermediate products. Through the optimization of various factors (including MgO content, Au/Pt molar ratio, reaction temperature and time), the Au1Pt2/MgO/SBA‐15 (0.05) catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and glyceric acid selectivity for the selective oxidation of glycerol. Density functional theory calculation confirmed that the synergistic effect between Pt and Au active sites could facilitate the oxidation of primary hydroxyl group by promoting the activation of C‐H bond and the oxidation of aldehyde group. The results may give insights on designing effective Pt based bimetallic catalyst for selective oxidation of glycerol.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
