Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Background</h3><p>C‐reactive protein (CRP) is a well‐known acute‐phase protein in dogs that may discriminate bacterial bronchopneumonia from other pulmonary conditions. Bronchopneumonia caused by <i>Bordetella bronchiseptica</i> (Bb) is common but the associated increase in CRP concentration in naturally infected dogs has not been fully explored. </p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Objective</h3><p>To compare CRP concentrations of dogs with Bb infection, with or without radiographic pulmonary lesions, to dogs with aspiration bronchopneumonia (ABP).</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Animals</h3><p>Sixteen dogs with Bb infection and 36 dogs with ABP.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>Retrospective study. In all dogs, CRP concentration was mildly increased (14‐38 mg/L). In the 5 dogs without alveolar lesions, CRP concentration was within the reference range in all but 1 dog, in which it was slightly increased. Median CRP concentration was significantly higher in dogs with alveolar lesions (20 mg/L) compared with dogs without alveolar lesions (5 mg/L; <i>p</i> < .002). In dogs with Bb infection, median duration of clinical signs was not different between dogs with normal CRP concentration and dogs with increased concentration. In dogs with Bb infection either with or without alveolar lessions, median CRP concentration was significantly lower (20 mg/L) than in dogs with ABP (118 mg/L; <i>p</i> < .001). </p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions and Clinical Importance</h3><p>In contrast to dogs with APB, CRP was not a good marker for the diagnosis of dogs suspected to have bordetellosis. Abstract:Background Acute phase proteins (APP) may guide treatment of pneumonia in dogs but correlations with radiographic abnormalities are poorly characterized. Objectives Develop a thoracic radiographic severity scoring system (TRSS), assess correlation of radiographic changes with APP concentrations, and compare time to APP and radiograph normalization with duration of antimicrobials treatment. Animals Sixteen client‐owned dogs, 12 with aspiration pneumonia, and 4 with community‐acquired pneumonia. Methods Concentrations of C‐reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA), and haptoglobin were measured on days 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, and 60 and orthogonal 2‐view thoracic radiographs were obtained on days 1, 7, 14, 28, and 60. Treatment was clinician‐guided and blinded to APP concentrations. Radiographic severity scores were assigned by blinded, randomized retrospective review by 2 board‐certified radiologists with arbitration by a third radiologist. Results Median (interquartile range [IQR]) time to normalization of CRP (7 days [7‐14]) and SAA concentrations (7 days [7‐14]) were shorter than antimicrobial treatment duration (17.5 days [14.5‐33.5]; P = .001 and .002, respectively) and TRSS normalization (14 days [8.8‐52], P = .02 and .02, respectively). Abstract:BACKGROUND: In dogs, antimicrobial drugs are widely prescribed for aspiration pneumonia (AP) despite poor documentation of bacterial infection in AP (b-AP) using bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) analysis. Interpretating discordant cytology and culture results is challenging, contributing to lack of a criterion standard, and highlighting differences between veterinary and human medical criteria for b-AP.OBJECTIVES: Determine how many dogs with AP had BALF collection and differences in diagnosis of b-AP using veterinary vs human medical criteria. Report findings of noninvasive markers (e.g. fever, band neutrophilia, radiographic severity score) in dogs with and without b-AP.ANIMALS: Retrospective cohort study of client-owned dogs (n = 429) with AP at 2 university veterinary hospitals. Twenty-four dogs met enrollment criteria.METHODS: Inclusion criteria were radiographic diagnosis of AP, ≥1 risk factor, CBC findings, and BALF cytology and culture results. Veterinary medical b-AP criteria were cytology findings compatible with sepsis with or without positive culture, or cytology findings not consistent with sepsis and positive culture (≥1.7 × 10<sup>3</sup> cfu/mL). Human medical b-AP criteria required culture with ≥10<sup>4</sup> cfu/mL or > 7% cells with intracellular bacteria on cytology.RESULTS: Only 24/429 dogs met all enrollment criteria; 379/429 dogs lacked BALF collection. Diagnosis of b-AP differed using veterinary (79%) vs human (29%) medical criteria. Fever, band neutrophils and high radiographic scores were noted in dogs with and without b-AP.CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Lack of routine BALF collection hampers definitive recognition of bacterial infection in AP. Differences in dogs meeting veterinary vs human medical definitions for b-AP and usefulness of noninvasive markers warrant further study to improve understanding of the role of bacteria in AP.

Clinical course and radiographic resolution of pneumonia in dogs treated with a shorter versus longer course of antimicrobials: a randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled study

Abstract:Objective: To describe clinical and radiographic outcomes in dogs with uncomplicated pneumonia receiving a shorter (2-week) versus longer (4-week) duration of antimicrobial therapy. Animals: 30 client-owned dogs with radiographic evidence of pneumonia. Methods: Dogs were randomly assigned to either a 2-week course of antimicrobials followed by a 2-week course of placebo medication (2-week group) or a 4-week course of antimicrobials (4-week group). All study investigators and owners were masked to the treatment group. Dogs were reevaluated at 12 ± 2 days and again at 28 ± 2 days for a physical examination and thoracic radiography. Standard documentation at visits included owner-reported clinical signs, nurse-acquired history, the clinician's physical examination, the number of affected lung lobe segments, and the global radiographic severity scores assigned. Outcomes investigated included the persistence of clinical and radiographic signs of pneumonia. Results: 28 dogs (93.3%) experienced complete resolution of clinical signs by the first visit, and no dogs in either group experienced relapse of clinical signs during the study period. Eighteen of 30 dogs (60%) and 25 of 30 dogs (83%) experienced complete resolution of radiographic lesions at the first and second study visits, respectively. The remaining 5 dogs (17%) had either stable (4 dogs) or continued (1 dog) improvement in radiographic lesions. Clinical relevance: Resolution of clinical and radiographic signs followed similar courses in dogs with uncomplicated pneumonia receiving a 2-week course of antimicrobials compared to a 4-week course. Clinical signs may be more useful for guiding discontinuation of antimicrobial therapy for pneumonia than radiographic signs.
Comparison of 4 point-of-care techniques to detect correct positioning of nasogastric tubes in dogs (2020-2021)

Abstract:Objective: To compare 4 point-of-care (POC) techniques to assess nasogastric (NG) tube placement versus radiographs as a reference standard. POC methods included air inflation with auscultation, fluid aspiration with pH measurement, ultrasonography, and capnography. Design: Prospective observational study in hospitalized dogs between 2020 and 2021. Setting: University teaching hospital. Animals: Fifty-one dogs requiring NG tube placement as part of their normal care. Interventions: After standard blind NG tube placement, each POC method was performed following standardized instructions. All POC methods were scored as to whether the investigator believed the tube to be in the gastrointestinal tract (as indicated by positive auscultation of borborygmus during insufflation, positive fluid aspiration with pH ≤5, presence of hyperechoic shadow in the esophagus, or absence of capnographic waveform). Subsequently, radiographs were taken to determine NG tube position as a gold standard. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of each test as compared to 2-view thoracic radiographs were determined. Measurements and main results: Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for each POC technique were as follows: air auscultation (84.4%, 50.5%, and 80.4%, respectively), neck ultrasound (95.6%, 83.3%, and 94.1%, respectively), capnography (91.1%, 33.3%, and 84.3%, respectively), and fluid aspiration with pH measurement (22.2%, 100%, and 31.4%, respectively). Conclusions: Among the 4 techniques evaluated, neck ultrasound had the best overall performance for assessing NG tube placement. Fluid aspiration with pH measurement might also have potential due to perfect specificity, but its clinical utility may be limited by low sensitivity and accuracy. Nonetheless, 2-view thoracic radiography should still be considered the standard method for confirmation of NG tube placement as none of the 4 POC techniques investigated showed both high sensitivity and perfect specificity.
A pilot study comparing bone marrow aspirates and venous blood for emergency point-of-care blood parameters in healthy dogs

Abstract:Objective: To compare intravenous and intraosseous blood aspirates using point-of-care diagnostic equipment available in veterinary hospitals. Design: Prospective study. Setting: Private referral hospital. Animals: Dogs undergoing a tibial plateau leveling osteotomy or extracapsular anterior cruciate ligament stabilization procedure were enrolled. Methods: Under general anesthesia, simultaneous 0.5 mL intravenous and intraosseous blood samples were collected from the jugular vein and proximal tibia, respectively. Samples were evaluated in duplicate within 10 minutes of collection and averaged for each of the following parameters: blood urea nitrogen (BUN), glucose, packed cell volume, total plasma protein (TPP), plasma lactate, sodium, potassium, chloride, urea, glucose, pH, anion gap, pO2, and pCO2 . Normalcy was tested with Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. A Student's t-test and Bland-Altman plot were used to compare intravenous and intraosseous samples. Results: Twelve dogs were recruited into the study. There were statistically significant differences between intravenous and intraosseous samples for sodium (P = 0.0216), chloride (P = 0.0225), BUN (P = 0.014), and potassium (P < 0.0001), respectively. No significant differences were detected for the other parameters evaluated. Discussion: The intraosseous space provides an easily accessible, noncollapsible alternative for assessing blood parameters. Omitting potassium, the statistically significant differences noted between sites was not felt to be clinically significant. Although statistically insignificant, the large difference in hematocrit values indicates that the samples should not be used interchangeably. Conclusion: Intraosseous aspirates, excluding potassium and hematocrit, appear to be a reliable alternative for assessing most point-of-care analytes in healthy dogs, although a larger sample size should be investigated. The application of these data in shock patients is unknown.
Ex vivo MRI and histological comparison of the canine adrenal glands

Abstract:Cross-sectional imaging is widely used to characterize adrenal gland tumors in humans. In small animal veterinary medicine, while some studies have attempted to distinguish between types of adrenal gland neoplasia using CT, peer-reviewed studies investigating canine adrenal glands on MRI are scant. This prospective, pilot, single-center, method comparison, cadaveric study aimed to assess the agreement between ex vivo MRI findings and analogous histopathological findings of the adrenal glands in dogs. The adrenal glands of randomly selected dogs presented for necropsy were examined by MRI (n = 31). Additionally, five adrenal masses in dogs who underwent invasive adrenalectomy (including three adrenocortical carcinomas, one pheochromocytoma, and one adenoma) were imaged. Subsequently, gross pathology and histopathology of all the specimens were performed and correlated with the imaging findings. Adrenal gland lesions were identified on MRI with a sensitivity of 24%, a specificity of 100%, a positive predictive value of 100%, a negative predictive value of 31%, and an accuracy of 45%. The present study provides MRI features of multiple adrenal gland lesions that had never been described in dogs, including cortical hyperplasia, nodular fibrosis, hemorrhage, or multiple tumors, such as adenoma, carcinoma, and hemangiosarcoma. While MRI identified numerous adrenal gland lesions, a significant portion of those went undetected. Therefore, the absence of adrenal gland lesions on MRI does not exclude the possibility of histological lesions being present.
Clinico-radiological features of aspiration-related lung disease: a retrospective observational clinical study

Abstract:Abstract Background Aspiration-related lung disease may mimick a variety of pulmonary disorders. Complex clinical presentations, non-specific radiologic characteristics, lack of aspiration history and difficulties in obtaining lung biopsy make diagnosis challenging. Methods This retrospective observational study reviewed all patients of aspiration pneumonia identified on lung pathology in Peking university first hospital from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2021.Clinical information including risk factors, symptoms, bronchoscopic examinations, chest imaging findings and outcomes on discharge were analyzed. Results A total of 20 inpatients with aspiration-related lung disease were included. Median age was 64 years (interquartile range: 55 to 67.75) and 14 (70%) were male patients. Aspiration-related lung disease was confirmed by lung biopsy (histologic presence of foreign body or other particulate matter) or cytologic pathology in BALF. Of these,19(95%) lung specimens included 6 (30%) surgical biopsy, 12 (60%) bronchoscopic biopsy and 1 CT-guided lung aspiration biopsy. One patient was identified by cytologic examination of BAL fluid. Recurrent cough was the most common symptom (70%). Four patients (20%) were asymptomatic and were discovered pulmonary nodules incidentally. Fourteen patients (70%) had one or more risk factors for aspiration, with dysphagia or choking the most common one (10 cases, 50%). Only 7 patients (35%) were clinically suspected of aspiration prior to biopsy. Twelve patients (66.7%) showed at least 2 lung lobes involved. Chest CT imaging revealed a variety of abnormalities, including mass in 9 patients (50%), ground glass opacity in 8 patients (44.4%), consolidation in 7 patients (38.9%), bronchiolitis in 5 patients (27.8%). The proportion of neutrophils in BALF cytological classification increased significantly during all 7 patients who underwent bronchoalveolar lavage. Five patients occurred respiratory failure and one patient needed endotracheal intubation for auxiliary ventilation. Conclusions Our study confirmed the atypical clinical manifestations of aspiration-related disease, which should be considered in the differentiation of pulmonary lesions even without risk factors or respiratory symptoms.
Aspergillus fumigatus Bronchopneumonia in a Hellenic Shepherd Dog

Abstract:A 3 yr old intact female Hellenic shepherd dog was referred due to depression, partial anorexia, fever, and a mild productive cough of 2 mo duration. Thoracic radiographs showed increased opacity of all of the left lung lobes. Upon bronchoscopy, a sanguineous, purulent discharge was detected in the tracheal lumen with hyperplastic tissue narrowing the left main stem bronchus. Cultures were positive for bacteria (Bacillus spp. and Clostridium spp.) but negative for fungi. Due to the severity of the lesions, a complete left lung pneumonectomy was performed. Histopathological examination of the excised lung tissues revealed a severe granulomatous bronchopneumonia with numerous alveolar macrophages laden with structures stained positively by periodic acid-Schiff and Grocott stain that had morphology consistent with fungi. PCR and sequencing of internal transcribed spacer regions 1 and 2 from genetic material extracted from paraffin-embedded pulmonary tissue confirmed the presence of Aspergillus fumigatus. Itraconazole was administrated for 5.5 mo and the dog was clinically normal 26 mo after surgery.
Recognition and Diagnosis of Underlying Disease Processes in Bacterial Pneumonia

Abstract:Bacterial pneumonia can present in both dogs and cats as either acute or chronic disease, and clinical signs may suggest respiratory or systemic impairment. Aspiration pneumonia, a common form of disease, can be caused by esophageal or laryngeal disease, vomiting, or altered mentation, such as with CNS disease or general anesthesia. Bacterial pneumonia can also develop due to inhaled airway foreign bodies, reduced local immune function, or impaired clearance of respiratory secretions. Rapid identification of the etiology and associated risk factors for pneumonia can help veterinarians develop a targeted therapeutic plan and prevent recurrence of disease.
Detection of bacterial DNA in synovial fluid in dogs with arthritis: a comparison between bacterial culture and 16S rRNA polymerase chain reaction

Abstract:Background: Septic arthritis (SA) is a serious condition in dogs that requires a prompt diagnosis and treatment to minimize long-term joint pathology. Although bacterial detection in synovial fluid (SF) through culture or cytology is often performed to confirm diagnosis, the sensitivity of these tests is low. The need for a reliable diagnostic tool to confirm the presence of bacteria in SF in humans has led to the increased use of 16S rRNA (i.e., ribosomal RNA) gene sequencing by polymerase chain reaction (16S rRNA PCR). The aim of this prospective clinical study was to compare the sensitivity and specificity of 16S rRNA PCR with bacterial culture on blood agar plates after pre-incubation of SF in paediatric blood bacterial culture bottles to identify bacteria in dogs with clinical signs of SA and to investigate the usefulness of these methods as diagnostic tools. Results: Ten dogs with clinical signs of SA, nine with osteoarthritis (OA, control group) and nine with clinical signs of immune-mediated polyarthritis (IMPA, second control group) were examined. Bacterial culture was positive in seven of 10 dogs with clinical SA, of which only two were positive by 16S rRNA PCR. The sensitivity of 16S rRNA PCR and bacterial culture analysis for dogs with clinical SA were 20% and 70%, respectively. All SF samples collected from control group (n = 9) and second control group (n = 14) animals were negative on culture, and 16S rRNA PCR rendered a specificity of 100%. Conclusions: Our study showed a lower sensitivity of 16S rRNA PCR than bacterial culture for dogs with clinical SA. Our findings suggest that there is currently no advantage in using 16S rRNA PCR as a diagnostic tool for dogs with clinical SA. Furthermore, our study indicates that pre-incubation in paediatric blood bacterial culture bottles before bacterial cultivation on blood agar plates might enhance bacterial culture sensitivity compared to other culture methods.

Abstract:Objective: To review the clinical and pathophysiologic aspects of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in dogs and cats. Data sources: Data from human and veterinary literature were reviewed through Medline and CAB as well as manual search of references listed in articles pertaining to acute lung injury (ALI)/ARDS. Human data synthesis: Since the term ARDS was first coined in 1967, there has been a abundance of literature pertaining to this devastating syndrome in human medicine. More complete understanding of the complex interactions between inflammatory cells, soluble mediators (e.g., tumor necrosis factor, interleukin (IL)‐6, IL‐8, platelet activating factor) and the clinical patient has provided for timely recognition and mechanistically based protective strategies decreasing morbidity and mortality in human patients with ARDS. Veterinary data synthesis: Although little is known, ARDS is becoming a more commonly recognized sequela in small animals. Initial case reports and retrospective studies have provided basic clinical characterization of ARDS in dogs and cats. Additionally, information from experimental models has expanded our understanding of the inflammatory mechanisms involved. It appears that the inflammatory processes and pathologic changes associated with ARDS are similar in dogs, cats, and humans. Conclusions: Unfortunately, current mortality rates for ARDS in small animals are close to 100%. As our capability to treat patients with advanced life‐threatening disease increases, it is vital that we develop a familiarity with the pathogenesis of ARDS. Understanding the complex inflammatory interactions is essential for determining effective preventative and management strategies as well as designing novel therapies for veterinary patients.

Comparison of bacterial culture results obtained from three different sampling locations in dogs and cats with chronic nasal disease

Abstract:Aims: To assess agreement of bacterial culture results from samples taken from nasal discharge, the nasal cavity and nasal biopsy from dogs and cats with nasal disease. Methods: Nineteen dogs and 21 cats with different nasal diseases (chronic rhinitis, n = 30; neoplasia, n = 7; sinonasal aspergillosis, n = 3) were prospectively enrolled in the study. Nasal swabs were taken bilaterally from nasal discharge at the nares, the nasal cavity, and one nasal mucosal biopsy per side. All samples were subjected to aerobic bacterial culture. Kappa statistics were used to evaluate agreement for the most prevalent bacterial species between sampling sites. Results: A positive culture result for at least one bacterial species was detected in 80% of samples from nasal discharge/nares, 92% of nasal cavity samples, and 75% of biopsy samples. The mean agreement between the three sampling sites for positive vs. negative culture results was never greater than moderate and the precision of the estimates of agreement varied widely.The most frequently isolated bacterial species in dogs were Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. In cats, Pasteurella spp. and Staphylococcus felis were the bacterial species cultured most frequently.For the most prevalent cultured species, Staphylococcus spp., mean agreement between sites was never greater than fair and the precision again varied widely. Conclusion: This study indicates that bacterial culture results in feline and canine nasal disease are site-specific and there was no evidence from this study for consistency between sites within a patient for many bacterial species. Consequently, if bacterial culture results from nasal swabs are used to guide therapeutic antimicrobial choice, different treatments may be selected depending on the site of culture. As a consequence, there is no evidence from this study that nasal bacterial cultures should be recommended as a routine diagnostic measure.

Abstract:Purpose To compare diagnostic accuracy between dual-energy CT lung perfused blood volume (Lung PBV) imaging and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in detecting chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) with histopathological results as reference standard in a canine model. Materials and methods Eighteen CTEPH canines were included into this experimental study. All procedures including paracentesis, embolization, scanning, pressure measurement and feeding medicine were repeated each two weeks, until systolic/diastolic pressure in canines was ≥30/15 mmHg or mean pulmonary artery pressure ≥20 mmHg, and then sacrificed for histopathology examination. Two radiologists (readers 1 and 2) and two nuclear radiologists (readers 3 and 4) analyzed images of conventional CT pulmonary angiography in dual-energy CT mode, Lung PBV imaging and SPECT, respectively. The presence, numbers, and locations of pulmonary emboli (PE) were recorded on a per-lobe basis. Pathological examination was served as reference standard. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of Lung PBV and SPECT were calculated. Kappa statistics were used to quantify inter-reader agreement. Results With histopathological results as reference standard, the sensitivities of 72.2%, 78.8%, 81.2%, specificities of 75.9%, 87.5%, 84.8%, accuracies of 73.8%, 83.1%, 83.1%, for readers 1, 2 and both with Lung PBV, respectively. Readers 3, 4 and both had sensitivities of 14.3%, 25.7%, 33.3%, specificities of 90.0%, 86.7%, 93.3%, accuracies of 49.2%, 53.8%, 60.0% with SPECT for detecting CTEPH. Inter-reader agreements were good for dual-energy CT (kappa = 0.662) and SPECT (k= 0.706) for detecting CTEPH. Conclusion Dual-energy CT had a higher accuracy to detect CTEPH than SPECT in this canine model study.

Abstract:Abstract Traditionally, the lung has been excluded from the ultrasound organ repertoire and, hence, the application of lung ultrasound (LUS) was largely limited to a few enthusiastic clinicians. Yet, in the last decades, the recognition of the previously untapped diagnostic potential of LUS in intensive care medicine has fueled its widespread use as a rapid, non-invasive and radiation-free bedside approach with excellent diagnostic accuracy for many of the most common causes of acute respiratory failure, e.g., cardiogenic pulmonary edema, pneumonia, pleural effusion and pneumothorax. Its increased clinical use has also incited attention for the potential usefulness of LUS in preclinical studies with small animal models mimicking lung congestion and pulmonary edema formation. Application of LUS to small animal models of pulmonary edema may save time, is cost-effective, and may reduce the number of experimental animals due to the possibility of serial evaluations in the same animal as compared with traditional end-point measurements. This review provides an overview of the emerging field of LUS with a specific focus on its application in animal models and highlights future perspectives for LUS in preclinical research.

Role of echocardiographic views adapted for lung evaluation in diagnosis of cardiogenic pulmonary edema in Dogs

Abstract:The objective of this study was to determine whether echocardiographic views adapted for lung evaluation may aid in diagnosis of dyspnea in dogs. Fifteen chronic valvular heart disease (CVHD) dogs without cardiac remodeling, 30 CVHD dogs with cardiac remodeling, 15 CVHD dogs with cardiogenic pulmonary edema and 15 dogs with pulmonary disease were prospectively enrolled. Loop recordings of pericardial-lung ultrasound were gathered during echocardiographic evaluation, and four videos of 4 different adapted views were recorded for each dog. Chest X-rays were used as reference-standard for pulmonary edema and/or disease. The videos were classified based on the number of B- lines as NEGATIVE (0, 1, 2 or 3) or POSITIVE (> 3 or confluent). Accuracy of a POSITIVE classification in identifying pulmonary edema and/or disease was calculated. Multivariate analyses were performed using echocardiographic variables that reflect increased left ventricular filling pressure (LVFP) to distinguish pulmonary edema from disease. Results showed that a POSITIVE classification distinguished dogs with pulmonary edema or disease from asymptomatic CVHD dogs in all four views. The best views were right parasternal short axis at papillary muscle level and long axis 4- chamber view, both with the same sensitivity (86.7%) and a specificity of 95.6% and 82.2%, respectively. Multivariate analyses showed that adding cutoff values of peak E wave > 130, E/IVRT > 2.5 or LA/Ao > 2.0 distinguished pulmonary edema from disease with 100% specificity. In conclusion, echocardiographic views adapted for lung evaluation, in addition to conventional echocardiography, may help identify the cause of dyspnea in dogs.

Assessment of the circulating inflammatory mediator interleukin-8 in dogs with tracheal collapse

Abstract:Objective: Tracheal collapse (TC) is an obstructive respiratory disorder in dogs that can affect lifespan and quality of life. Systemic inflammation has been identified in other obstructive airway conditions in dogs and humans. We hypothesized a systemic pro-inflammatory state exists in dogs with TC. Animals: Dogs with TC (TC, n = 15) and healthy, non-affected controls (C, n = 15), were prospectively enrolled. Procedure: Signalment and body condition score (BCS) were recorded for all dogs. For TC dogs, cough duration, pharyngeal collapse, bronchial collapse, and previous stent placement were recorded. Plasma samples were banked at -80°C and batch-analyzed for interleukin-8 (IL-8). Differences between groups were evaluated. Results: Yorkshire terriers were overrepresented in the TC group. The TC group was older than the C group and had a higher BCS. Interleukin-8 was significantly greater in the TC compared to the C group. Interleukin-8 was not correlated with age sex, BCS, breed, cough duration, pharyngeal collapse, bronchial collapse, or stent placement. Conclusion and clinical relevance: Increased plasma IL-8 concentration supports the presence of systemic inflammation in canine TC. Dogs with TC were older than controls, with a higher BCS, but this did not account for the increased IL-8. Further investigation of IL-8 as a potential biomarker for monitoring TC progression and therapeutic response is warranted.
Predictors of inflammatory lower airway disease in cats presented to the emergency room in respiratory distress: a case-control study

Abstract:The objective of the study was to identify whether venous blood gas (VBG) variables may serve as a predictor of inflammatory lower airway disease (ILAD) in cats presenting with respiratory distress. A secondary objective of this study was to compare the diagnostic utility of patient signalment, history and physical examination findings, as compared with VBG variables. The medical records of cats presenting with respiratory distress secondary to ILAD (54 cases) and non-ILAD (121 controls) were retrospectively reviewed. No admission VBG variables were predictive of a final diagnosis of ILAD. Comparatively, multivariable analysis identified a history of a cough ( P <0.001), increased respiratory rate ( P = 0.001), the presence of an abdominal component to respiration ( P = 0.007) and the absence of pleural effusion ( P <0.01) to be independently associated with a final diagnosis of ILAD. Cats with a history of a cough and an abdominal component to respiration had 7.86 and 5.81 greater odds of being diagnosed with ILAD, respectively. Cats with pleural effusion had 7.43 lower odds of having this final diagnosis. For every 10 breaths/min increase in respiratory rate, cats had 1.48 greater odds of being diagnosed with ILAD. Cats diagnosed with ILAD had a survival rate of 94% (95% CI 84–99%) vs 61% (95% CI 51–70%) for non-ILAD controls ( P <0.001). The results of this study found patient history and physical examination findings to be more useful predictors of a final diagnosis of ILAD in comparison with VBG variables at presentation. A history of a cough, an abdominal component to respiration and a lack of pleural effusion were found to be significant predictors of this diagnosis. Further investigation into the role of respiratory rate in ILAD is warranted.

Prospective comparison of prostatic aspirate culture and cystocentesis urine culture for detection of bacterial infection in dogs with prostatic neoplasia

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether prostatic aspirate culture is a superior method to detect infection compared to culture of urine collected by cystocentesis in dogs with prostatic neoplasia. Materials and methods: A prospective study was conducted and dogs with suspected or confirmed prostatic neoplasia were enrolled. Urinalysis was done and culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed on paired urine and prostatic aspirate samples collected at a single timepoint. Results: Ten dogs with prostatic neoplasia were enrolled. All dogs had one or more clinical sign consistent with lower urinary tract disease. One dog (10%) had a positive urine culture, but negative prostatic aspirate culture, one dog (10%) had a positive prostatic aspirate culture, but negative urine culture, and one dog (10%) had both positive urine and prostatic aspirate cultures. Using prostatic aspirate culture as the reference standard, urine culture had a sensitivity for detecting infection of 87.5% (95% confidence interval 52.9 to 99.4) and specificity of 50% (92.6 to 97.4) in this population of dogs. Clinical significance: Positive cultures were uncommon with both culture collection methods. Study results did not identify prostatic aspirate culture to be a more sensitive method of detecting prostatic infection than urine culture collected by cystocentesis in these dogs with prostatic neoplasia.

Abstract:Abstract Background Interstitial lung disease is a heterogeneous group of conditions characterized by severe radiographic changes and clinicopathological findings. However, in the vast majority of cases, the cause remains unknown. Case description In the present study, we reported the clinical case of a 3 years old female Bull Terrier presented in October 2020 to the Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Department of the Turin Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a progressive pulmonary illness characterized by dyspnea, exercise intolerance, and a diffuse and severe pulmonary interstitial pattern at imaging investigations. Considering the clinical findings, the dog was included in a serological survey for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in companion animals, showing positive results. Due to the further clinical worsening, the owners opted for euthanasia. At necroscopy, dog showed severe and chronic bronchopneumonia compatible with a Canine Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and with serological features linked to a SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conclusions The comparison of these lesions with those reported in humans affected by Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) supports the hypothesis that these findings may be attributable to the post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a dog with breed predisposition to Canine Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (CIPF), although direct evidence of SARS-CoV-2 by molecular or antigenic approaches remained unsolved.
