Abstract:We report an unprecedented strategy for using achiral monomer to construct chiral helical polymer nanomaterials with tunable morphologyhelix-sense-selective precipitation polymerization induced by a chiral solvent (HSSPP-CS). CHCl3, chiral α-pinene, and an alkanol were employed to constitute a solvent mixture for performing HSSPP-CS. (R)- or (S)-α-pinene worked as chiral source and transferred its chirality to the resulting helical polyacetylenes derived from achiral monomer in the course of polymerization, thereby forming chiral helical polymers and endowing the nanomaterials thereof with optical activity. Simply changing solvent composition provided chiral polymer products varying in morphology from fibrous to rod-like and finally to spherical morphology. This is the first report dealing with chirality transfer from chiral solvent to induce helix-sense-selective precipitation polymerizations. The study establishes a straightforward and effective alternative for making use of achiral monomers to construct chiral helical polymer nanomaterials with diverse morphology.

Abstract:Polymerization of phenyl isocyanide using achiral Pd(II) initiator with the presence of chiral L- or D-lactide (L-LA or D-LA) as additive was found to proceed in helix-sense-selective manner. The polymerization of achiral phenyl isocyanide, 4-isocyanobenzoyl-2-aminoisobutyric acid decyl ester (1) by this method produced optically active helical poly-1(m)(L), whose chirality was solely come from the helical conformation without containing of any other chiral atoms. The added chiral LA can be facilely recovered and reused in the helix-sense-selective polymerizations without significantly loss of its chiral induction, and the chiral economy of the polymerization is high. When enantiomerically pure phenyl isocyanide bearing an R-or S-alanine pendent with a long n-decyl chain (1r or 1s) were polymerized by this method, the polymerization was found to proceed in a highly enantiomer-selective manner with one of the enantiomers preferentially polymerized over the antipode by a factor of 3.6. Single-handed helical polyisocyanides can be achieved when the chirality of the monomer was appropriately matched with the added LA.
Helix-Sense-Selective Polymerization of Achiral Substituted Acetylenes in Chiral Micelles

Abstract:Helix-sense-selective polymerizations have been developed to control the screw sense of helices, by which optically active helical polymers can be formed from achiral monomers. The current methodologies for helix-sense-selective polymerizations can be grouped into three categories: 1) by using chiral initiators or chiral catalysts (cocatalysts), well exemplified by the leading studies from the groups of Okamoto, Nakano, Masuda, Novak, Chen, and Aoki; 2) by using a chiral structure-directing agent, as demonstrated by the excellent work from Meijer and co-workers; and 3) by using external asymmetric field effects creatively developed by the Akagi and Shirakawa groups. Chiral micelles 12] have been widely applied for chiral recognition, chiral separation, and enantioselective synthesis. The latter is of particular significance and promise, as chiral micelles provide an alternative for effectively controlling chiral stereostructures, and thus they can be expected to provide asymmetric environments for performing helix-sense-selective polymerizations. To confirm this hypothesis, we prepared optically active nanoparticles consisting of substituted helical polyacetylenes by asymmetric polymerization of achiral monomers in chiral micelles, whereas nonasymmetric polymerizations occurred in achiral micelles and provided nanoparticles without optical activity. Unfortunately, in the asymmetric polymerizations, even though the helical polymers forming the nanoparticles adopted one predominant handedness, they lost optical activity in solution. In the present study, a novel strategy was created by which helicalsense-selective polymerizations were achieved in chiral micelles; moreover, the as-prepared helical polymers kept their preferential helicity even in solution. Abstract:Helical polymers have attracted a great deal of attention and been extensively investigated due to their various applications. One of the most important applications of helical polymers is chiral recognition and resolution of enantiomers for the reason that a pair of enantiomers is commonly with different physiological and toxicological behaviors in biological systems. Helical polymers usually present unexpected high chiral recognition ability to a variety of racemic compounds. What's more, the chiral recognition and resolution abilities of the system are dependent on the highly ordered helical structures of the helical polymers. This mini review mainly focuses on the recent progress in chiral recognition and resolution based on helical polymers. The synthetic methodology for helical polymers is firstly discussed briefly. Then recent advances of chiral recognition and resolution systems based on helical polymers, especially polyacetylenes and polyisocyanides, are described. We hope this mini review will inspire more interest in developing helical polymers and encourage further advances in chiral-related disciplines.

Abstract:Many researches have been done on synthetic helical polymers because of their wide applications such as chiral recognition, enantiomeric separation, asymmetric catalysis, circularly polarized luminescence, liquid crystallization and so on. Synthetic helical polymers can be generally divided into static helical polymers and dynamic helical polymers on the basis of whether the helix inversion barriers are high or low. And this mini review mainly describes the three common selectively synthetic methods of static helical polymers such as polymerization with chiral monomers, helix-sense-selective polymerization and enantiomer-selective polymerization. We hope that this mini review can provide more ideas on synthesis of chiral materials and encourage further development on novel synthetic methods of helical polymers.

Abstract:Any polymers composed of racemic segments are obviously optically inactive and lack any chiroptical applications. Here, we present an intriguing method for precisely generating global chirality in racemic copolymer assemblies without any external asymmetrical intervention via step-wise polymerization-induced chiral self-assembly (PICSA). Global supramolecular chirality of the nanoaggregates could be dynamically switched by the two diametrically opposed chiral conflict effects: "first come, first serve" effect and "late-comer lives above" effect, which can be controlled by the precisely specified the number and sequence of enantiomeric segments. Significantly, the supramolecular stacking manners of the racemic mesogenic building units as well as the liquid crystallinity of the solvophobic core play a crucial role for the chiral communication pathway of enantiomeric mesogens. Furthermore, such switchable global chirality in racemic polymers is broadly applicable and well regulable. We propose that this research may challenge the notion that racemic systems lack optical activity while highlighting their potential applications in functional racemic polymer materials and providing insights into the evolution of racemates towards homochirality on early Earth.

Abstract:Biological homochirality is a signature of life. Supramolecular polymerization is effective to achieve high hierarchical homochirality in nature, but has not been well-explored. Herein, we report regioselective and homochiral supramolecular polymerization of chiral nanotadpole aggregates made of either synthetic helical poly(phenylacetylene)s or chirality-amplified co-assembly of chiral and achiral poly(phenylacetylene)s. The twisted nanotadpole aggregates with high screw-sense preference polymerized as monomers (aggremers) into supramolecular chains in a head-to-tail regioselective and stepwise manner. Supramolecular copolymerization of enantiomeric aggremers favored formation of homochiral hierarchical supramolecular structures as visualized by TEM. Chiral hexagonal columnar mesophase of aggremers was responsive for the stereoselectivity. The work opens a gate to controllably and effectively construct functional chiral supramolecular materials and deepens the understanding of hierarchical biological homochirality.

Abstract:The synthesis of chiral substances, especially chiral polymers is currently one of the hottest issues in the field of chiral materials and chemistry due to their unique structural characteristics and potential applications. However, the acquisition of chiral polymers by chemical synthesis or asymmetric catalysis may often involve expensive chiral reagents and tedious synthesis routes. The types of chiral substances in nature are undoubtedly limited. Except for the design and synthesis of chiral compounds, utilizing external stimulus factors to induce chirality in achiral polymers is a promising approach. Inspired by nature, researchers tend to design rational interaction systems that attempt to precisely transfer chiral information from natural species to artificial polymers, which has been proven to be an excellent method to construct macro-molecular/supramolecular chirality in achiral polymer systems. In this review, an account of the typical development of chirality transfer from naturally occurring chiral substances, including chiral dopants, chiral solvents, and chiral polymers to achiral artificial polymers is summarized. Finally, we further briefly introduce the future scope, opportunities, and challenges of developing novel and functional chiral polymeric materials.

Abstract:Recently polymers become excellent candidates to construct artificial chiral aggregates, due to the diverse conformations and components. Although regulating the chiral morphology is challenging in polymer aggregates, it attracts lots of research interests because of its crucial role in applications. Herein, this review summarizes typical examples of construction methods of supramolecular chirality in aggregated state and their applications. Inspired by the mystery of natural homochirality, the design and construction of artificial chiral systems with special functions including mechanics, chiroptical devices, and chiral separation have aroused the great interest of scientists. Due to its diverse conformations and components, polymers become an excellent candidate to construct artificial chiral aggregates, which provides an opportunity to fabricate advanced chiral materials. Herein, in this review, we summarized not only the different strategies for construction and regulation of supramolecular chirality in chiral or achiral polymer systems, mainly including post‐assembly and polymerization‐induced chiral self‐assembly in chiral polymer systems and several chirality transfer and induction strategies in achiral polymer systems, but also the formation mechanisms of chiral aggregates by the chirality amplification from the molecular level to supramolecular level. Furthermore, we present the typical applications of chiral polymeric aggregates in circularly polarized light emission, chiral recognition and separation, and chiral elastomer. Finally, the current challenges and future directions of chiral polymeric aggregates are also elaborated.

Polymers Bearing Covalently Linked Chiral Proline-Based Pendants: Induction of a Highly Stable Helical Sense that Mimics Double-Stranded Helical Morphology and Their Chiral Resolution Ability

Abstract:Synthesis of common organic polymers bearing a helical sense in aqueous media is still an inflexible area. Here, we report proline-derived imidazolium-functionalized water-soluble, highly stable chiral polymers/chiral polyelectrolytes whose chiral pendant groups exist at the cation part of the polymer chains with different counteranions. Despite chiral pendants, chiral polymers with chloride counteranions did not respond to circular dichroism (CD) absorption spectroscopy, which suggests that they exist as random coils. Interestingly, hydroxy-containing poly-( l-)-2-OH and poly-( d-)-2-OH showed two intense CD signals (with opposite loops), suggesting that the hydroxyl anion facilitates the noncovalent interactions in the chiral polymers to realize this “random coil to helical” transformation, which failed with the chloride anion. l-Prolinate-substituted polymers (poly-( l-)-2-OH) showed a positive Cotton effect with a double-stranded, right-handed helical sense in the presence of achiral and chiral counteranions. Under identical conditions, d-prolinate-substituted chiral polymers (poly-( d-)-2-OH) showed a negative Cotton effect with a left-handed helical sense, which is exactly opposite to its counterpart. This study discusses the influence of the type of chiral center on a preferred helical sense and tries to establish the influence of chirality at the main chain vs side chain on the type and extent of helicity. The synthesized chiral polymers were successfully used for the chiral resolution of racemic d,l-alanine through enantioselective crystallization. These helical polymers showed good enantio-separation efficiency with an enantiomeric excess (ee) of up to 90%. Here, we demonstrated that by selective choice of the chiral helical polymers, a targeted enantiomer could be recrystallized.

Abstract:The tunability nature of supramolecular chirality is subtly employed where various small amounts of achiral diaminopyridines are used to copolymerize with m‐phenylenediamine based on a copolymerization‐mediated strategy to modulate the macroscopic helicity as well as the chiroptical activity of the resulting robust covalent polymers in an enantiopure template molecular system. Designing artificial systems to mimic chiral superstructures and exploring how achiral molecules precisely modulate their chirality is crucial to understand the origin of homochirality in nature. Herein, the tunability nature of supramolecular chirality is subtly applied to fabricate robust chiral covalent polymers with controlled macroscopic helicity. When using conventional supramolecular transcription methods to prepare chiral poly(m‐phenylenediamine), simply introducing various small amounts of achiral diaminopyridines (DAPs) to copolymerize with m‐phenylenediamine (MPD) enables the resulting chiral copolymers with adjustable helical configurations and chiroptical activities in an enantiopure template system. The strong hydrogen bonds between DAPs and the template molecules ((S)/(R)‐PhgC16) proved to be the driving force for guiding the chiral polymerization mode of MPD. Impressively, the exquisite self‐sorting phenomenon is observed by tuning the stoichiometric ratio of DAP and (R)‐PhgC16, where the as‐prepared copolymers with opposite helicity can exist simultaneously to form a double network structure and their chiroptical activity can be well regulated. In addition, based on such a copolymerization strategy, a conceptual library of helical functional copolymers is built with editable polymer types including conducting polymers and designable amine‐aldehyde condensation‐based polymers. This copolymerization‐mediated synthetic strategy may facilitate the development of chiral polymers with controlled morphologies and dynamic compositions.

Abstract:Design and synthesis of novel optically active helical polymers are active subjects and frontiers in the field of polymer science. Optically active helical vinylterphenyl polymers are physically and chemically stable and are of potential applications in chiral recognition and asymmetric catalysis. In this review, the helix. sense-selective radical polymerization of vinylterphenyl monomers, chiral teleinduction in radical copolymerization, and self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers consisting of helical chains as rigid segments in solution and at the air/water interface are comprehensively introduced. The results obtained up to now are summarized and a short outlook on the development of optically active vinylaromatic polymers is provided.

Abstract:Chiral stationary phases (CSPs) derived from synthetic helical polymers showed efficient resolution towards a wide range of racemates. Hence, synthesizing various effective stereoregular helical polymers has attracted a great deal of attention. In helical polymer, the highly ordered structure with its preferred handed helical conformation plays a key role during enatioseparation. Moreover, two types of helical polymers such as static and dynamic/stimuli-responsive helical polymers were majorly studied for chiral resolution. The synthetic approach plays a significant role in forming these helical polymers. Including this, the dynamic helical polymers are very much sensitive to both external and internal stimuli, resulting changes in helical handedness as well as helical pitch. The separation efficiency of helical polymers varies depending on its helical conformations, pendant groups, molecular weights, coating solvents, and chiroptical properties. This present review mainly focuses on the progress of different synthetic approaches for getting synthetic helical polymers, and their applications for enatioseparation as CSPs in liquid chromatography.

Abstract:Chirality is one of the most important structural features in biological systems. Peptides, as a class of small biomolecules, can self-assemble into various chiral supramolecular polymers with unprecedented levels of diversity and complexity, which have practical ramifications in various fields from catalysis to sensing, optics, and biomedicine. In this review, we will focus on the chiral transfer during peptide self-assembly from the molecular scale to the nano-, micro- and mesoscale, and highlight the vital roles of chirality in determining the structures and functions of the self-assembled supramolecular polymeric materials. By rational control of the chiral self-assembly of peptide monomers, supramolecular polymers with sophisticated hierarchical structures and enhanced chemical and biological functions can readily be achieved. These can provide inspiration for researchers to design highly efficient asymmetric catalysts, templates fabricating materials with tunable chiroptics, or to synthesize biomaterials with chirality-encoded properties for biomedical applications.

Abstract:While manipulating the helicity of nanostructures is a challenging task, it attracts great research interest on account of its crucial role in better understanding the formation mechanisms of helical systems. For the supramolecular chirality in self-assembly systems, one challenge is how to understand the origin of supramolecular chirality and inherent helicity information on nanostructures regulated by functionality-oriented stacking modes (such as J- and H-aggregation) of building blocks. Herein, two-component hydrogels were prepared by phenylalanine-based enantiomers and achiral bis(pyridinyl) derivatives, where helical nanofibers with inverse handedness as well as controllable helical pitch and diameter were readily obtained through stoichiometric coassembly of these building blocks. The helix inversion was achieved by the transition between the J- and H-aggregation of bis(pyridinyl) derivatives, which was collectively confirmed by circular dichroism, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and single X-ray crystallography. Interestingly, the helical coassemblies with opposite handedness could be obtained not only from the enantiomeric building blocks but also from the chiral monomers with the same configurational chirality by exchanging achiral additives. This work provides insight into the origin and helicity inversion of supramolecular chirality in molecular self-assembly systems and may shine light on the precise fabrication of chiral nanostructures for potential applications in smart display devices, optoelectronics, and biological systems.
Polymerization-induced Chiral Self-assembly for the In-situ Construction, Modulation, Amplification and Applications of Asymmetric Suprastructures

Abstract:In the polymerization-induced chiral self-assembly (PICSA) process, chiral functional monomers undergo spontaneous supramolecular self-assembly and asymmetric stacking during living polymerization, leading to the in-situ generation of chiroptical polymer assemblies characterized by diverse morphologies. The PICSA strategy facilitates precise control and manipulation of both non-covalent supramolecular helices and covalent macromolecular helices within aggregated cores, thereby driving significant advancements in fields such as chiral recognition materials, asymmetric catalysts, nonlinear optical materials, and ferroelectric liquid crystals (LC). This minireview summarizes recent developments in the in-situ chiroptical construction and modulation associated with the PICSA methodology. Furthermore, it seeks to elucidate emerging PICSA systems founded on various living polymerization mechanisms, exploring hierarchical chirality transfer processes and the pathway complexities in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions. This minireview also presents several illustrative examples that demonstrate the practical applications of chiral polymer materials synthesized through the PICSA approach, thereby illuminating future opportunities in this innovative field.

Abstract:Here, we present the chemoenzymatic synthesis of two pairs of configuration-customized unsaturated chiral polyesters and discover that they are able to self-assemble into a helical superstructure. The chiral (R)- or (S)-polyesters with a polar unsaturated main-chain and an apolar side chain were designed to be stereoregular and amphiphilic-like. The solvent polarity, stereoregularity, unsaturated bond in the backbone and the structure of side chains were found to be the key factors to affect the self-assembly performance of the chiral polyesters. As the solvent polarity increased, the nanostructures of stereoregular unsaturated polyesters transformed from spheres to helical fibers, while there was no such transformation for the racemic or saturated polyesters.

Abstract:Chiral helicenes are widely used in fields related to organic materials and molecular machines relevant molecules, as well as serving as privileged frameworks for chiral ligands and catalysts. Therefore, the research into asymmetric routes for the synthesis of chiral helical compounds has garnered significant interest in recent years. In this regard, chirality conversion/transfer from chiral precursors has emerged as a powerful strategy for the construction of chiral helicenes, allowing the synthesis of various types of chiral helical compounds. This strategy has become and will remain a prominent research topic in the field of asymmetric synthesis. In this review article, described between 2012 and 2024, the approaches for the synthesis of chiral helicenes by chirality conversion or transfer from centrally chiral precursors are summarized.

Concurrently, chiral self-assembly is one of the most important subjects in supramolecular research, which can broaden the applications of chiral materials. This study focuses on the morphology control of amphiphilic rod-coil molecules composed of the rigid hexaphenyl unit and flexible oligoethylene and butoxy groups containing lateral methyl groups, carried out using an enantioseparation application. The methyl side chain being located on different blocks influences the driving force through steric hindrance, which determines the direction and degree of tilted packing during the π-π stacking of the self-assembly process. Interestingly, the amphiphilic rod-coil molecules aggregated into long helical nano-fibers, which further hierarchically aggregated into nano-sheets or nano-tubes upon increasing the concentration of the THF/H<sub>2</sub>O solution. In particular, the hierarchical-chiral assembly effectively amplified the chirality and was validated by the strong Cotton signals; playing a vital role in the enantioselective nucleophilic substitution reaction. These results provide new insights into the applications of chiral self-assemblies and soft chiral materials.

Abstract:Chiral resolution is very important and still a big challenge due to different biological activity and same physicochemical property of one pair (R)‐ and (S)‐isomer. There is no doubt that chiral selectors are essentially needed for chiral resolution, which can stereoselectively interact with a pair of isomers. To date, a large amount of optically active helical polymers as chiral selectors have been synthesized via two strategies. First, the target helical polymers are derived from natural polysaccharide such as cellulose and amylose. Second, they can be synthesized by polymerization of chiral monomers. Alternatively, an achiral polymer is prepared first followed by static or dynamic chiral induction. Furthermore, a part of them is harnessed as chiral stationary phases for chromatographic chiral separation and as chiral adsorbents for enantioselective adsorption/crystallization, resulting in good enantioseparation efficiency. In summary, the present review will focus on recent progress of the polymers with optical activity for chiral resolution, especially the literature published in the past 10 years. In addition, development prospects and future challenges of optically active helical polymers will be discussed in detail.
