Abstract:Heat stress during the post anthesis (seed filling) stage negatively influences the movement of photosynthates to the developing sinks and, thus lowering the seed yield in Indian mustard [ Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss]. The present studywas conducted with the objective to unravel the variability for terminal heat stress (THS) in a fixed diversitygenetic stock of 500 lines of Indian mustard. Germplasm stock exhibited huge variability for seed yield and its contributing traits with variable levels of yield reduction under late sown conditions. The per se yield based computed heat stress susceptibility index (HSI) ranged from 32.3 (highly THS susceptible) to -1.15 (THS tolerant). Based on yield reduction due to THS, 500 test genotypes were grouped into 10 classes and genotypes from each class wererandomly takento constitute a diverse panel of 96 lines. This panel was evaluated under THS by raising crop underpoly-tunnels during reproductive phase along with same set of 96 genotypes raised under normal field conditions (served as control). Based on agronomic advantage and HSI for economic traits, 23 heat tolerant donor lines were selected for utilization in commercial breeding programme. Bangladesh J. Abstract:Two hundred genotypes with seven checks of Indian mustard were sown at two different interval (timely and late) in augmented block design for trait association and comparative phenotyping against heat stress at terminal stage. Correlation studies revealed that seed yield per plant had significant positive association with plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, leaf area index, total number of siliqua per plant, siliqua on main shoot and 1000- seed weight under both normal and late sown conditions. Based on results of heat screening parameters like heat susceptibility index, yield stability index and percent yield change, genotypes viz. NDRE-4, EC-399300, DRMR-13, DRMR-9, DRMR-7, DRMR-357, DRMR-6, EC-766423 and IM76 were found promising for terminal heat tolerance.

Abstract:This research paper investigates the variability in seed oil content (SOC) in Indian mustard ( Brassica juncea L.) under terminal heat stress (THS) conditions. A genetic stock of 488 genotypes of B . juncea was evaluated over two years and grouped into five classes based on the reduction in oil content under THS compared to normal sown crop. Based on heat susceptibility index (HSI), a diverse panel of 96 genotypes was selected and evaluated under THS. Twenty-two heat-tolerant donor genotypes were identified, including introgression lines derived from B . tournefortii , B . carinata and Erucastrum cardaminoides . This study is the first to report on marker–trait associations for SOC in B. juncea under THS using a GWAS approach. Furthermore, candidate genes associated with abiotic stress tolerance and lipid metabolism were identified near the significant SNPs, emphasizing their role in SOC regulation under stress. Notable candidate genes include BjuA003240 (encoding for alcohol-forming fatty acyl-CoA reductase), BjuA003242 (involving in lipid biosynthesis), BjuA003244 (associated with mitochondrial functions and stress tolerance), and BjuA003245 (related to MYB transcription factors regulating lipid biosynthesis). This study provides valuable insights into the genetic basis of SOC variation under THS in B. juncea , highlighting potential breeding targets for improved heat stress resilience in Indian mustard cultivation.

Abstract:The impact of elevated temperature at the reproductive stage of a crop is one of the critical limitations that influence crop growth and productivity globally. This study was aimed to reveal how sowing time and changing field temperature influence on the regulation of oxidative stress indicators, antioxidant enzymes activity, soluble sugars (SS), and amino acids (AA) in Indian Mustard. The current study was carried out during the rabi 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 where, five varieties of mustard viz . Pusa Mustard 25 (PM-25) (V1), PM-26 (V2), BPR-541-4 (V3), RH-406 (V4), and Urvashi (V5) were grown under the field conditions on October 30 (normal sowing; S1), November 18 (late sowing; S2) and November 30 (very late sowing; S3) situations. The S1 and S3 plants, at mid-flowering stage, showed a significant variation in accumulation of SS (8.5 and 17.3%), free AA (235.4 and 224.6%), and proline content (118.1 and 133%), respectively, and played a crucial role in the osmotic adjustment under stress. The results showed that S3 sowing, exhibited a significant induction of the hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) (110.2 and 86.6%) and malondialdehyde (23.5 and 47.5%) concentrations, respectively, which indicated the sign of oxidative stress in plants. Interestingly, the polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase enzyme activities were also significantly increased in S3 plants compared to S1 plants, indicating their significant roles in ameliorating the oxidative stress. Furthermore, the concentration of fatty acid levels such as palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic acids level also significantly increased in S3 plants, which influenced the seed and oil quality. The study suggests that the late sowing significantly impaired the biochemical mechanisms in Indian mustard. Further, the mustard variety V4 (RH-406) was found to be effective for cultivation as well as environmental stress adoption in Indian soils, and it could be highly useful in breeding for developing heat-tolerant genotypes for ensuring the food security.

Abstract:Heat stress at seedling stage has a crucial impact on Indian mustard growth and productivity. Identifying heat stress responsive proteins can be crucial to understand the heat stress adaptive mechanisms. In this work, biochemical, proteomic, and peptidomics response of the thermotolerant genotype, BPR 543-2 was investigated in the early seedlings of mustard under heat stress treatment. A total of 403, 328 and 369 number of proteins were identified to be expressed exclusively during 0, 4 and 8 h of heat-stress while 89, 119 and 81 were differentially accumulated during 0–4 h, 4 h-8 h and 0–8 h using LC–MS/MS based analysis. Notably, BPR 543-2 expressed elevated levels of heat shock proteins, chaperones, enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrate and energy, cell wall modifications and transcription factors. In addition, using MALDI-TOF-MS, overexpressed proteins involved in DNA repair, signal transduction and metabolic adaptation were identified during different time point of heat stress. Moreover, biochemical analysis revealed high TAC, TF and less turbulence in photosynthetic pigments in stressed samples. Through combined analysis of biochemical, proteomics and peptidomics approaches, it was observed that BPR 543-2 was more resilient to heat stress and experienced fewer significant metabolic disruptions in stressed samples, demonstrating its adaptability to heat stress at early seedling stage. The proteins with differential abundance were functionally annotated in-silico for their subcellular localization, biological and molecular functions. This work demonstrates the usefulness of proteomics and peptidomics-based approaches by providing fresh insights into the mechanism behind the heat-stress adaption mechanisms in Indian mustard. The identified critical proteins provide intriguing targets for developing stress tolerance in heat-sensitive brassica crops.

Abstract:A field experiment was undertaken during the Rabi seasons of 2019-20 and 2021-22 at organic farm of Amity Institute of Organic Agriculture, Amity University, Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, for the optimization of the sowing time period to reduce the effect of heat stress on Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.) for increasing productivity. 32 Indian mustard germplasms were sown at three different time periods viz., the last week of September, the last fortnight of October, and the second week of November. Our results revealed that the mustard crop showed a substantial increase in yield supporting characters such as the number of siliqua and seeds per siliqua when sown at last week of September as compared to the second week of October, whereas the late sown crop resulted in less yield due to the heat stress faced by crop during the anthesis stage as compared to early and optimum sowing. The mean seed yield per plant showed a positive correlation with mean test weight. We established the positive effect of early sowing over optimal and late sowing in Indian mustard; further, we found a few mustard accessions were able to resist different climatic conditions. The mustard germplasm accessions IC296688, IC296703, IC296732, IC305130, IC401575, IC426385, and IC589669 were high yielding among all the accessions and can be considered as heat stress tolerant.

Abstract:Heat stress, especially during the reproductive stage, has been exacerbated by changing climatic conditions, resulting in reduced seed yield in crops like Indian mustard. In the present study, 154 genotypes of Indian mustard were used to find novel SSR marker-based associations for seed yield and physiological traits by linkage disequilibrium. Extensive phenotyping of 154 genotypes for seed yield and various physiological traits was done for two consecutive years (2020–2021 and 2021–2022) in timely and late-sown environments. Out of 237 SSR markers, a total of 111 polymorphic markers containing 312 alleles were used for analysis. Two different models, i.e., general linear model (GLM) and mixed linear model (MLM), were used to detect the significant marker–trait associations for timely and late-sown environment separately. A total of 12 and 10 MTAs were found to be associated under timely and late-sown conditions with seed yield and physiological traits using MLM model. Out of these promising MTAs identified in the present study, five SSRs were specifically detected only in late-sown environments which meant that these specific genomic regions and QTLs were associated under terminal heat conditions. This is the first report on the identification of marker-trait associations for physiological traits under terminal heat stress conditions. It may be possible to develop the molecular markers for significant SSRs after due validation. The findings contribute to our understanding of the genetic basis of heat tolerance and provide valuable information for breeding programs aiming to improve crop productivity under heat stress conditions.

Abstract:Mustard (Brassica juncea L.) cultivation was largely confined to northern India, although climate change paved the way for crop introduction to southern parts of the country. This fall, an investigation was conducted to evaluate 68 Indian mustard genotypes in the Main Agricultural Research Station, Dharwad (University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad) in rabi 2018-19. The objective of the present study is to study the genetic variability for yield and yield attributes in Indian mustard. The results of genetic variability study indicated that significant genotypic variation in key traits such as secondary branches, racemes per plant, economic yield, biological yield, harvest index, seed yield, seeds per siliqua, siliqua length, number of siliqua per raceme, and oil yield. Traits like days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, and oil content exhibited low variation. Additionally, traits with high heritability, including plant height, primary branches, racemes per plant, and several yield-related parameters, showed substantial genetic advance,suggesting the potential for effective selection and rapid improvement in these characteristics.

Abstract:The current scanty knowledge about the salt tolerance mechanism underlying the ability of plants to tolerate salt stress hinders the potential production of numerous crops, including Indian mustard. To explore the traits and mechanism for salt tolerance, high throughput phenotyping of 250 stabilized F7:8 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) mapping population of Indian mustard were conducted under control and salinity (ECiw 12 dS m−1) for 54 morpho‐physio‐seed‐quality traits. Most of the traits were reduced with variable percentages under salt stress. The stress tolerance index (STI) of YPP showed a significant negative association with Na+ concentration of root (RNa), indicating that RILs with low Na+ concentration have high seed yield and a positive significant association with STI of yield‐related traits, photosynthesis rate (Pn), intrinsic water use efficiency (inWUE), fresh weight of upper leaf (USFW), fresh weight of branches (BrFW), fresh weight of basal leaf (BLFW), and fresh weight of middle leaf (MLFW) revealed that by improving these traits seed yield per plant (YPP) was improved. Based on principal component analysis (PCA) of 54 STI and new index composite selection index (CSI), RILs viz., R114, R150, R164, R170, and R206 were identified as stable performers which can be exploited for quantitative trait loci (QTLs)/gene discovery and serve as potential donors to combat salt stress. Our research will serve to determine the relative importance of different functional traits of salt tolerance mechanisms that can be used to screen colossal germplasm.

Abstract:The experiment was carried out throughout the winter season rabi under irrigated and rainfed conditions to examine the durability of enhanced and high-yielding cultivars of Indian mustard. Variance analysis on 14 characters was performed individually as well as aggregated across years and places. Irrigated environments were better for expressing a larger range of characters and a higher mean for all characters. Days to maturity, plant height, point to first branch, primary branches/plant, secondary branches/plant, point to first siliqua, seed yield/plant, and days to 50% flowering all showed significant G E interaction, indicating a significant amount of predictable G E interaction. All genotypes passed the tests for the three stability parameters and were found to be stable and high yielding. Although genotype were shown to be appropriate for growth in rainfed (poor) conditions despite having greater performance for seed yield/plant. The "genotype" was discovered to be suited for production in an irrigated (beneficial) environment and outperformed the population mean forseed yield/plant. Any breeding plan that aims to create stable, high-yielding genotypes can contain genotypes. For an increase in seed yield per plant, direct selection in the segregating generations of such parents for 1000-seed weight, point to first branch, secondary branches/plant, siliqua length, and overall number of siliquae/plant will be effective (PDF) Stability analysis in Indian mustard.

Abstract:Wild species are weedy relatives and progenitors of cultivated crops, usually maintained in their centres of origin. They are rich sources of diversity as they possess many agriculturally important traits. In this study, we analysed 25 wild species and 5 U triangle species of Brassica for their potential tolerance against heat and drought stress during germination and in order to examine the early seedling stage. We identified the germplasms based on the mean membership function value (MFV), which was calculated from the tolerance index of shoot length, root length, and biochemical analysis. The study revealed that B. napus (GSC-6) could withstand high temperatures and drought. Other genotypes that were tolerant to the impact of heat stress were B. tournefortii (RBT 2002), D. gomez-campoi, B. tournefortii (Rawa), L. sativum, and B. carinata (PC-6). C. sativa resisted drought but did not perform well when subjected to high temperatures. Tolerance to drought was observed in B. fruticulosa (Spain), B. tournefortii (RBT 2003), C. bursa-pastoris (late), D. muralis, C. abyssinica (EC694145), C. abyssinica (EC400058) and B. juncea (Pusa Jaikisan). This investigation contributes to germplasm characterization and the identification of the potential source of abiotic stress tolerance in the Brassica breeding programme. These identified genotypes can be potential sources for transferring the gene(s)/genomic regions that determine tolerance to the elite cultivars.

Abstract:Fifty-nine diverse Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) genotypes were used to find an effective screening method to identify salt tolerance at the germination and seedling stages. Salinity stress limits crop productivity and is difficult to simulate on farms, hindering parental selection for hybridization programmes and the development of tolerant cultivars. To estimate an optimum salt concentration for screening, seeds of 15 genotypes were selected randomly and grown in vitro at 0 mM/L, 75 mM/L, 150 mM/L, 225 mM/L, and 300 mM/L concentrations of NaCl in 2 replications in a complete randomized design. Various morphological parameters, viz., length of seedling, root and shoot length, fresh weight, and dry weight, were observed to determine a single concentration using the Salt Injury Index. Then, this optimum concentration (225 mM/L) was used to assess the salt tolerance of all the 59 genotypes in 4 replications while observing the same morphological parameters. With the help of Mean Membership Function Value evaluation criteria, the genotypes were categorized into 5 grades: 4 highly salt-tolerant (HST), 6 salt-tolerant (ST), 19 moderately salt-tolerant (MST), 21 salt-sensitive (SS), and 9 highly salt-sensitive (HSS). Seedling fresh weight (SFW) at 225 mM/L was found to be an ideal trait, which demonstrates the extent to which B. juncea genotypes respond to saline conditions. This is the first report that establishes a highly efficient and reliable method for evaluating the salinity tolerance of Indian mustard at the seedling stage and will facilitate breeders in the development of salt-tolerant cultivars.

Abstract:The present investigation was carried out to assessthe components ofseed yield under droughtstress using pathcoefficient analysis. Twenty two genotypes ofIndian mustard were grown in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications during rabi, 2007-08. Analysis of variance indicated presence of variability in theexperimental genotypesforseed yield and other morpho-physiological characters except main shoot length, harvest index, protein content, SLW at 35 days aftersowing (DAS) and seed: husk ratio. Seed yield/plant was positively and significantly correlated at both phenotypic and genotypic levels with days to maturity, plant height, primary branches/plant, secondary branches/plant, siliquae on main shoot, LAI, CGR and biological yield/plant. Seed yield/plant had negative genotypic correlations of moderate strength with transpiration quotient at 35 and 75 DAS indicating its positive relationship with water use efficiency. TheRGRduring 35-75 DAS followed byRGRbetween 75 and 95 DAS exerted the highest direct positive effects on seed yield. Biological yield/plant, SLW at 75 DAS, TDM at 75 and 95 DAS, SCMR at 35 DAS, siliquae on main shoot, days to maturity and siliqua length also had substantial positive direct effects. The characters under study explained about 96.5% and 100% variability in the seed yield at phenotypic and genotypic level, respectively. Dry matter production, early growth and development of the crop are important under drought due to continuous decline in available soil moisture. Since LAI, LGR, CGR, RGR and NAR are the functions of dry matter production and/or leaf area, therefore, selection on the basis of high biological yield and large LAI at 50% flowering should be quite effective in improving seed yield under drought. An increase in LAI might increase radiation load resulting in to high transpiration. Therefore, genotypes having high LAI with erect leaves and low TQ should be accorded priority in the selection programme.

Abstract:Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern and Coss] is cultivated mainly in the northwestern agroclimatic region of India and suffers huge losses in productivity due to salinization. In an effort to figure out adaptation strategies of Indian mustard to salt stress, we conducted a comparative proteome analysis of shoots of its two genotypes, with contrasting sensitivity to salt stress. Differential expression of 21 proteins was observed during the two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE). The identified salt-stress-responsive proteins were associated with different functional processes including osmoregulation, photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, ion homeostasis, protein synthesis and stabilization, energy metabolism, and antioxidant defense system. Salt-tolerant genotype (CS-52) showed a relatively higher expression of proteins involved in turgor regulation, stabilization of photosystems and proteins, and salt compartmentalization, as compared to salt-sensitive genotype (Pusa Varuna). Our results suggest that modulating the expression of salt-responsive proteins can pave the way for developing salt tolerance in the Indian mustard plants.

Abstract:Brassica juncea is an important industrial and commercial oilseed crop grown primarily in India. This study aimed to assess 56 genotypes of Indian mustard to quantify genetic diversity, which aids the breeder in identifying genetically divergent parents to evaluate the proportional contributions of various components towards overall divergence. All the 56 Indian mustard genotypes were tested in RBD with three replications for 2 consecutive years i.e. 2016-17 and 2017-18 during the rabi season. Observations were recorded for 11 yield and its attributing traits. The findings revealed that height up to first branching, aphid count, penetration force and seed yield per plant had maximum PCV and GCV signifying that genetic factors have a greater impact on the inflow of these traits. Height up to first branching, secondary branches per plant, primary branches per plant, siliquae per plant, aphid count and 1000 seed weight had strong heritability combined with GA as % of mean. These indicate that the traits were controlled by additive gene action. Seed yield per plant was significantly correlated with penetration force and siliquae per plant. As a result, it's reasonable to predict that improving these traits by selection, could lead to significant yield gains. Four of the eleven PCs had eigen values greater than 1.0, accounting for 69.94% of the variance. PC I, which explained 30.31% of the overall variance. Mahalanobis D2 statistics revealed considerable genetic diversity among the genotypes. 56 genotypes were distributed into 7 clusters. This is anticipated that genotypes within a cluster are almost genetically related to one another. Cluster VII and II showed maximum inter-cluster divergence. From a breeding perspective, a divergence analysis revealed that genotypes like SKJM-05, RNWR-09-3, RW-351, B-85, DRMR-4001, RGN-386, TM52 276 and SKM-1313 can be selected as genetically divergent parents for hybridization to obtain desirable segregants.
Analysis of the Genetic Diversity in Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern&Coss) Genotypes

Abstract:A study was undertaken during the rabi season (October, 2021 to March, 2022) at the crop research center Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India to find out the genetic divergence in 40 genotypes of Indian mustard using the D2 statistical approach. Forty (40) diverse genotypes of Indian mustard were examined for genetic divergence using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Observations were recorded on various 14 characters viz; days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height (cm), number of primary branches plant-1, number of secondary branches plant-1, siliquae on main axis, length of main axis (cm), siliqua length (cm), number of seeds siliqua-1, 1000 seed weight (g), biological yield plant-1 (g), harvest index (%), oil content (%) and seed yield plant-1 (g). Mahalanobis D2 statistics were applied to the analysis of genetic divergence. Based on D2 values 40 genotypes were grouped into 5 clusters, maximum genotypes eleven obtained in cluster IV after that cluster I with nine genotypes, cluster V with eight genotypes, cluster III with seven genotypes and cluster II with five genotypes. The maximum intra-cluster was in cluster IV. The maximum inter-cluster distance was revealed between cluster II and V. It is clearly indicated that the genotypes included in this cluster are having a wide spectrum of genetic diversity. According to the role of many traits under examination in the manifestation of genetic divergence, plant height had the biggest contribution to divergence.

Abstract:Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. & Coss. (Indian mustard) is an economically important edible oil crop. Over the years, plant breeders have developed many elite varieties of B. juncea with better yield traits, but research work on the introgression of stress resilience traits has largely been lagging due to scarcity of resistant donors. Crop wild relatives (CWRs) are the weedy relatives of domesticated plant species which are left unutilized in their natural habitat due to the presence of certain undesirable alleles which hamper their yield potential, and thus, their further domestication. CWRs of B. juncea namely include Sinapis alba L. (White mustard), B. tournefortii Gouan. (African mustard), B. fruticulosa Cirillo (Twiggy turnip), Camelina sativa L. (Gold-of-pleasure), Diplotaxis tenuisiliqua Delile (Wall rocket), D. erucoides L. (White wall rocket), D. muralis L. (Annual wall rocket), Crambe abyssinica R.E.Fr. (Abyssinian mustard), Erucastrum gallicum Willd. (Common dogmustard), E. cardaminoides Webb ex Christ (Dogmustard), Capsella bursa-pastoris L. (Shepherds purse), Lepidium sativum L. (Garden Cress) etc. These CWRs have withstood several regimes of biotic and abiotic stresses over the past thousands of years which led them to accumulate many useful alleles contributing in resistance against various environmental stresses. Thus, CWRs could serve as resourceful gene pools for introgression of stress resilience traits into Indian mustard. This review summarizes research work on the introgression of resistance against Sclerotinia stem rot (caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum), Alternaria blight (caused by Alternaria brassicae), white rust (caused by Albugo candida), aphid attack, drought and high temperature from CWRs into B. juncea. However, various pre- and post-fertilization barriers due to different ploidy levels are major stumbling blocks in the success of such programmes, therefore, we also insightfully discuss how the advances made in -omics technology could be helpful in assisting various breeding programmes aiming at improvisation of stress resilience traits in B. juncea.

Abstract:Heat is a major abiotic stress that drastically reduces chickpea yield. This study aimed to identify heat-responsive traits to sustain crop productivity by screening a recombinant inbred line (RILs) population at two locations in India (Ludhiana and Faridkot). The RIL population was derived from an inter-specific cross between heat-tolerant genotype GPF 2 (C. arietinum L.) and heat sensitive accession ILWC 292 (C. reticulatum). The pooled analysis of variance showed highly significant differences for all the traits in RILs and most of the traits were significantly affected by heat stress at both locations. High values of genotypic coefficient of variation (19.52–38.53%), phenotypic coefficient of variation (20.29–39.85%), heritability (92.50–93.90%), and genetic advance as a percentage of mean (38.68–76.74%) have been observed for plant height, number of pods per plant, biomass, yield, and hundred seed weight across the heat stress environments. Association studies and principal component analysis showed a significant positive correlation of plant height, number of pods per plant, biomass, hundred seed weight, harvest index, relative leaf water content, and pollen viability with yield under both timely-sown and late-sown conditions. Path analysis revealed that biomass followed by harvest index was the major contributor to yield among the environments. Both step-wise and multiple regression analyses concluded that number of pods per plant, biomass and harvest index consistently showed high level of contribution to the total variation in yield under both timely-sown and late-sown conditions. Thus, the holistic approach of these analyses illustrated that the promising traits provide a framework for developing heat-tolerant cultivars in chickpea.

Abstract:The uncertainties of climatic variability and global warming are leading to rising concerns towards ensuring global food security of an expanding population. Unfavorable climatic conditions, like extremes of temperature, drought, flood, and salinity, in addition to the elevated greenhouse gases adversely affect the physiology, and accordingly the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of plants. Mustard (Brassica juncea) and rape (Brassica rapa), the two important oilseed crops of the Indian subcontinent, are also cultivated in Eastern Europe, Russia, China, and Canada. These oilseed crops are affected by various biotic and abiotic stress during different growth and developmental stages, that severely influences agricultural productivity. Extensive breeding efforts toward the development of Brassica cultivars that can resist these climatic variabilities are under various stages of progress. The Brassica germplasm and the wild relatives of B. juncea and B. rapa, which constitute important genetic stocks, are also being utilized in these breeding programs. An integrated approach is required that will study plant–insect pest and disease–climate interactions for conceiving future strategies to develop disease-, insect-resistant, and climate-resilient plant varieties. Developing mustard varieties, efficient in the utilization of soil nutrients, are also required for improving productivity in impoverished soils and for better uptake/utilization of nutrients in soils rich in resources. Future research in oilseed mustard and rape should, therefore, involve examining the influence of climate-smart traits on yield/production in targeted environments, so that climate-resilient cultivars adapted to climate change conditions could be developed. This chapter summarizes the advances in breeding of climate-smart traits such as, tolerance to drought, heat, salinity, flooding and frost, and efficient nutrient utilization, in oilseed mustard and rape, that could assist in the genomic designing for climate-smart crops.
Deciphering the Information on Inheritance Mode of Erucic Acid Trait in Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea L.)

Abstract:Background: Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern and Coss] is most important oilseed crop grown in Rabi season and have been used as a source of edible oil in the Indian subcontinent. Low use of mustard oil is basically due to the presence of high content of erucic acid which not only deteriorate the quality of oil but also have harmful effects on human body. Methods: Knowledge of erucic acid trait inheritance is crucial so as to define the breeding strategies for erucic acid trait in Indian mustard. In present study the experiment to study mode of inheritance of erucic acid trait was carried out among progeny of crosses involving high erucic acid (NRCHB-101) and low erucic acid (Heera and PDZ-1) cultivars of Brassica juncea. The study was conducted using six generations viz., P1, P2, F1, F2, B1 and B2 derived from the crosses, NRCHB-101 × Heera and NRCHB-101 × PDZ-1. Result: The content of erucic acid of F1’s was found intermediate between the parents while in F2 seeds itwas segregated into 5 classes i.e., less than 2%, 2-10%, 11-20%, 21-30% and greater than 30% with a genotypic ratio of 1:4:6:4:1. Backcross seeds (B1 and B2) derived from the F1 backcrossing with high erucic acid and low erucic acid parents were classified into three classes with a ratio of 1:2:1. The segregation patterns confirmed that in case of B. juncea two genes are responsible for governance of erucic acid trait and these genes are inherited in additive manner. The results of this investigation also showed that inheritance of erucic acid content trait is under embryonic control with absence of maternal effect in B. juncea. This understanding of B. juncea’s erucic acid inheritance will help breeders create B. juncea cultivars with zero erucic acid.
