Abstract:Carbon peaking and carbon neutralization trigger a technical revolution in energy & environment related fields. Development of new technologies for green energy production and storage, industrial energy saving and efficiency reinforcement, carbon capture, and pollutant gas treatment is in highly imperious demand. The emerging porous framework materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), owing to the permanent porosity, tremendous specific surface area, designable structure and customizable functionality, have shown great potential in major energy-consuming industrial processes, including sustainable energy gas catalytic conversion, energy-efficient industrial gas separation and storage. Herein, this manuscript presents a systematic review of porous framework materials for global and comprehensive energy & environment related applications, from a macroscopic and application perspective.

Abstract:The additive-manufacturing (AM) technique, known as three-dimensional (3D) printing, has attracted much attention in industry and academia in recent years. 3D printing has been developed for a variety of applications. Printable inks are the most important component for 3D printing, and are related to the materials, the printing method, and the structures of the final 3D-printed products. Carbon materials, due to their good chemical stability and versatile nanostructure, have been widely used in 3D printing for different applications. Good inks are mainly based on volatile solutions having carbon materials as fillers such as graphene oxide (GO), carbon nanotubes (CNT), carbon blacks, and solvent, as well as polymers and other additives. Studies of carbon materials in 3D printing, especially GO-based materials, have been extensively reported for energy-related applications. In these circumstances, understanding the very recent developments of 3D-printed carbon materials and their extended applications to address energy-related challenges and bring new concepts for material designs are becoming urgent and important. Here, recent developments in 3D printing of emerging devices for energy-related applications are reviewed, including energy-storage applications, electronic circuits, and thermal-energy applications at high temperature. To close, a conclusion and outlook are provided, pointing out future designs and developments of 3D-printing technology based on carbon materials for energy-related applications and beyond.

Three dimensional graphene based materials: Synthesis and applications from energy storage and conversion to electrochemical sensor and environmental remediation

Abstract:With superior electrical/thermal conductivities and mechanical properties, two dimensional (2D) graphene has become one of the most intensively explored carbon allotropes in materials science. To exploit the inherent properties fully, 2D graphene sheets are often fabricated or assembled into functional architectures (e.g. hydrogels, aerogels) with desired three dimensional (3D) interconnected porous microstructures. The 3D graphene based materials show many excellent characteristics including increased active material per projected area, accessible mass transport or storage, electro/thermo conductivity, chemical/electrochemical stability and flexibility. It has paved the way for practical requirements in electronics, adsorption as well as catalysis related system. This review shows an extensive overview of the main principles and the recent synthetic technologies about fabricating various innovative 3D graphene based materials. Subsequently, recent progresses in electrochemical energy devices (lithium/lithium ion batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and solar cells) and hydrogen energy generation/storage are explicitly discussed. The up to date advances for pollutants detection and environmental remediation are also reviewed. Finally, challenges and outlooks in materials development for energy and environment are suggested.

Abstract:Energy shortage and environmental deterioration have become two intractable global issues with the eruptive evolution of industry and technology. Porous-engineered electrospun nanofiber materials with highly tailored pore traps, topological porous channels, and high surface areas have garnered great concern and become a central topic for environmental and energy applications. Herein, a comprehensive overview covering the state-of-the-art developments made in the rational design of 1D, 2D, and 3D electrospun porous nanofiber materials and their progression toward energy and environmental applications is presented. First, the principles of electrospinning for constructing customizable intra- and inter-fiber porous architectures are presented. Second, a detailed retrospective on ingenious designs and strategies for fabricating polymeric, carbon, and ceramic porous nanofiber materials is given. Third, emerging environmental and energy applications of porous nanofiber materials, particularly in significant areas of energy storage and conversion, gas adsorption and separation, organic solvent nanofiltration, electrochemical catalysis, and water treatment are discussed. Finally, the challenges, future perspectives, and plausible research directions of porous nanofiber materials are highlighted. This comprehensive review is anticipated to be valuable in the context of understanding the design and synthesis of application-driven porous nanofiber materials for the onerous demands of energy and environmental processes in the coming decades.

Abstract:<p>Carbon-based functional nanomaterials have attracted remarkable attention from the scientific community for their unique combinations of advantageous chemical and physical properties, such as superb electrical conductivity, excellent heat conductivity, chemical stability, advanced optical properties, and high mechanical strength. Our research group has been very actively involved in the study and further development of carbon-based functional nanomaterials and their potential applications for many years. In this feature article, we introduce our recent endeavors in the development of carbon-based nanomaterials with superior functionalities for potential application in diverse fields including solar thermal fuels, advanced thermal management, and electrochemical energy storage. The key design concepts of these advanced functional nanomaterials are highlighted, specific synthesis strategies are discussed, their potential usage in devices and applications is emphasized, and background information is succinctly furnished wherever warranted. We begin with an overview on the chemistry of carbon nanomaterials, in which the synthesis and chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes and graphene are introduced, respectively. We then showcase the design, fabrication and properties of different functional carbon nanomaterials for diverse applications, including photoactive azobenzene/carbon nanomaterials for solar thermal fuels and light-driven carbon-based actuators, advanced carbon nanomaterials with directional thermal conductivity, and carbon-based electrodes for electrochemical energy storage. Finally, we conclude by briefly summarizing the advantages of the application of functional carbon-based nanomaterials in various fields, and list challenges that remain to be solved and potential that remains to be tapped.</p>

Abstract:The development of high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices is critical for addressing energy crises and environmental pollution. Hence, the design and preparation of next-generation electrode materials have been gaining increasing attention. Recent progress has demonstrated that three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanomaterials are extremely promising candidates for the electrodes of electrochemical energy storage devices due to their unique structural advantages of interlinked architecture. Herein, recent advances in the scalable fabrication of 3D carbon nanofiber (CNF)-based materials and their applications for electrochemical energy storage devices are summarized. Some representational 3D CNF architectures, such as CNF gels, 3D CNF films, 3D CNF arrays, and their nanocomposites, are highlighted with regard to various applications, including supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), lithium-sulfur (Li-S), lithium-selenium (Li-Se), and metal-O-2 batteries, as well as other new battery systems. Finally, contemporary challenges in the scalable fabrication of 3D CNF architectures are outlined and a brief outlook to future studies is given. This review illustrates significant opportunities for the macroscopic fabrication of 3D CNF architectures, and therefore inspires new discoveries to promote the practical applications of 3D CNF architectures in electrochemical energy storage fields.

Abstract:Since the discovery of buckyballs in 1985, the family of carbon materials has been rapidly growing. From zero-dimensional (0D) fullerene, 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and recent 2D graphene to traditional 3D nanoporous carbon and nanodiamond, carbon nanomaterials exhibit a variety of structures and forms due to the existence of three hybridization forms, namely, sp3, sp2, and sp1, of carbon atoms. In recent years, they have increasingly gained interests from both scientific and industrial communities due to the unique physical and chemical properties. They show diverse potential applications in structure, electronics, energy, environment, water, and others. The purpose of this special issue is to report some latest research results on synthesis, characterization, and applications of carbon nanomaterials and related nanostructures. The accepted papers cover various carbon materials, namely, CNTs, graphene, carbon nanofibers, nanodiamonds, amorphous carbon films, carbon nanocomposite, graphite-like layered materials, and so on. These papers cover a wide range of topics related to synthesis and applications of these carbon nanomaterials in mechanics and tribology, thermal management, energy conversion (photoelectronic devices, solar cells, and photocatalysis), energy storage (lithium-ion batteries), and drug delivery fields. Abstract:There is considerable attention on the field of nanotechnology because it has transformed many technologies such as information technology, medicine, food safety, environmental science, and energy. The unique and flexible characteristics of nanomaterials make them suitable candidates for various applications such as medicine, electronics, energy, photocatalytics, catalysis, sensors, energy storage, solar cells, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), ultracapacitors, fuel cells, and environmental remediation. Nanomaterials in several shapes or morphologies—such as nanosized particles, tubes, wires, or fibers—and their polymeric composites are used for production of energy and removal of various contaminants such as chemicals (heavy metal ions, dyes, and pharmaceutical compounds); gases, including SO2, nitrous oxide, and CO; and biological contaminants—mainly Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Carbon-based nanomaterials contribute to a broad range of environmental applications, sorbents, high-flux membranes, depth filters, antimicrobial agents, renewable technology, and pollution prevention strategies. Advances in the fabrication of novel nanosized materials for treatment of contaminants and production of energy are described in this chapter. Moreover, research trends and outlines of future opportunities in environmental and energy applications are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Recently, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), a promising visible-light-driven semiconductor material, has received enormous attention for photocatalytic water splitting, organic pollutant degradation, and CO2 reduction. However, the photocatalytic activity of bulk g-C3N4 is restricted due to the insufficient light adsorption, ineffective utilization of photogenerated charge carriers, and low specific surface area. Compared with bulk g-C3N4, the three-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride based materials (3D CNBMs) have outstanding physical and chemical characteristics, such as large specific area, plentiful active sites, and excellent electrical conductivity. This article reviews the latest achievements in 3D CNBMs, and presents the state-of-the-art advances in the synthetic methods of 3D CNBMs. Meanwhile, various applications of 3D CNBMs in photocatalysis, photo-electrochemistry, and electrochemistry are systematically reviewed and discussed. In addition, possible improvements and perspectives of 3D CNBMs are proposed. This review aims to summarize a panorama of the up-to-date processes of 3D CNBMs in environmental and energy applications and provide some innovative thoughts to accelerate the ground-breaking research and development of 3D CNBMs for a sustainable future.

Abstract:<p>Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have exhibited wide applications in the fields of materials science, nanotechnology, energy storage, environmental science, biomedicine, and others due to their unique structure, function, and properties. In this review, we present recent advance in the production and applications of various CNF-based nanomaterials. The methods for the production of CNFs are introduced firstly, and then different structures of CNFs related to corresponding synthesis methods are analyzed. In addition, the functional tailoring of CNFs by combining with other nanoscale building blocks such as nanoparticles, quantum dots, carbon materials, biomolecules, and others are demonstrated and discussed. Finally, the potential application of the CNF-based functional nanomaterials in the fields of supercapacitors, chemical batteries, solar cells, fuel cells, environmental adsorbents, sensors, biosensors, tissue engineering, antibacterial materials, electromagnetic interference shielding, and sharp memory materials are introduced and discussed in detail. It is expected this comprehensive review will not only help the readers to obtain the preliminary information on the production, modification, and applications of CNFs, but also promote the design and synthesis of novel CNF-based nanostructures and nanomaterials for advanced applications.</p>

Abstract:Nanocarbon materials play a critical role in the development of new or improved technologies and devices for sustainable production and use of renewable energy. This perspective paper defines some of the trends and outlooks in this exciting area, with the effort of evidencing some of the possibilities offered from the growing level of knowledge, as testified from the exponentially rising number of publications, and putting bases for a more rational design of these nanomaterials. The basic members of the new carbon family are fullerene, graphene, and carbon nanotube. Derived from them are carbon quantum dots, nanohorn, nanofiber, nano ribbon, nanocapsulate, nanocage and other nanomorphologies. Second generation nanocarbons are those which have been modified by surface functionalization or doping with heteroatoms to create specific tailored properties. The third generation of nanocarbons is the nanoarchitectured supramolecular hybrids or composites of the first and second generation nanocarbons, or with organic or inorganic species. The advantages of the new carbon materials, relating to the field of sustainable energy, are discussed, evidencing the unique properties that they offer for developing next generation solar devices and energy storage solutions.

Abstract:Abstract Nanofibers have attracted extensive attention and been applied in various fields due to their high aspect ratio, high specific surface area, flexibility, structural abundance, etc. The electrospinning method is one of the most promising and effective ways to produce nanofibers. The electrospun nanofibers-based films and membranes have already been demonstrated to possess small pore sizes, larges specific surface area, and can be grafted with different functionalities to adapt to various purposes. The environmental applications of nanofibers are one of the essential application fields, and great achievements have been made in this field. To well summarize the development of nanofibers and their environmental applications, we review the nanofiber fabrication methods, advanced fiber structures, and their applications in the field of air filtration, heavy metal removal, and self-cleaning surface. We hope this review and summary can provide authors a comprehensive understanding of the structural design and environmental applications of electrospun nanofibers.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based composites have drawn increasing attention for energy applications due to their unique structures and properties. By combining the merits of 3D graphene (3DG), e.g., a porous and interconnected network, a high electrical conductivity, a large accessible surface area, and excellent mechanical strength and thermal stability, with the high chemical/electrochemical activities of active materials, 3DG-based composites show great promise as high-performance electrode materials in various energy devices. This article reviews recent progress in 3DG-based composites and their applications in energy storage/conversion devices, i.e., supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, dye-sensitized solar cells, and fuel cells.

Abstract:Carbon in its single entity and various forms has been used in technology and human life for many centuries. Since prehistoric times, carbon-based materials such as graphite, charcoal and carbon black have been used as writing and drawing materials. In the past two and a half decades or so, conjugated carbon nanomaterials, especially carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, activated carbon and graphite have been used as energy materials due to their exclusive properties. Due to their outstanding chemical, mechanical, electrical and thermal properties, carbon nanostructures have recently found application in many diverse areas; including drug delivery, electronics, composite materials, sensors, field emission devices, energy storage and conversion, etc. Following the global energy outlook, it is forecasted that the world energy demand will double by 2050. This calls for a new and efficient means to double the energy supply in order to meet the challenges that forge ahead. Carbon nanomaterials are believed to be appropriate and promising (when used as energy materials) to cushion the threat. Consequently, the amazing properties of these materials and greatest potentials towards greener and environment friendly synthesis methods and industrial scale production of carbon nanostructured materials is undoubtedly necessary and can therefore be glimpsed as the focal point of many researchers in science and technology in the 21st century. This is based on the incredible future that lies ahead with these smart carbon-based materials. This review is determined to give a synopsis of new advances towards their synthesis, properties, and some applications as reported in the existing literatures.

Abstract:Increasing concerns over climate change and energy shortage have driven the development of clean energy devices such as batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and solar water splitting in the past decades. And among potential device materials, 3D hierarchical carbon-rich micro-/nanomaterials (3D HCMNs) have come under intense scrutiny because they can prevent the stacking and bundling of low-dimensional building blocks to not only shorten diffusion distances for matter and charge to achieve high-energy-high-power storage but also greatly expose active sites to achieve highly active, durable and efficient catalysis. Based on this, this review will summarize the synthetic strategies and formation mechanisms of 3D HCMNs, including 3D nanocarbons, polymers, COFs/MOFs, templated carbons and derived carbon-based hybrids with a focus on 3D superstructures such as urchins, flowers, hierarchical tubular structures as well as nanoarrays including nanotube, nanofiber and nanosheet arrays. This review will also discuss the application of 3D HCMNs in energy storage and catalysis systems, including batteries, supercapacitors, electrocatalysis and photo(electro)catalysis. Overall, this review will provide a comprehensive overview of the recent progress of 3D HCMNs in terms of preparation strategies, formation mechanisms, structural diversities and electrochemical applications to provide a guideline for the rational design and structure–function exploration of 3D hierarchical nanomaterials from different sources beyond carbon-based species.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:Carbon nanotube functional materials (CNTFMs) represent an important research field in transforming nanoscience and nanotechnology into practical applications, with potential impact in a wide realm of science, technology, and engineering. In this review, we combine the state-of-the-art research activities of CNTFMs with the application prospect, to highlight critical issues and identify future challenges. We focus on macroscopic long fibers, thin films, and bulk sponges which are typical CNTFMs in different dimensions with distinct characteristics, and also cover a variety of derived composite/hierarchical materials. Critical issues related to their structures, properties, and applications as robust conductive skeletons or high-performance flexible electrodes in mechanical and electronic devices, advanced energy conversion and storage systems, and environmental areas have been discussed specifically. Finally, possible solutions and directions are proposed for overcoming current obstacles and promoting future efforts in the field.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has a more than important role in deducing the materials’ structure, especially carbon-based nanomaterials, including determining their properties and consequently their application field, such as: energy storage, environmental protection, biosensing and soil treatment. In this investigation, we report a comparison of three kinds of nanostructured carbon based smart nanomaterials synthesized at different dimension (1D, 2D and 3D) using physico-chemical growth processes. These carbonaceous products have been characterized in order to identify their attractive properties using different techniques, such as XRD, FT-IR, TGA/DTA, FESEM microscopy, Raman and XSP spectroscopy. These obtained nanostructured carbon have shown structural forms in the case of MWNTs and graphene type having 1D and 2D configuration, respectively, as well as an amorphous form in the case of biochar having 3D porous configuration which contains less cohesive bonds than graphene and MWNTs. These two structured ones have a much more solid and cohesive structure thanks to the strength of their carbon bonds and their graphitization rate is proved from their Raman and XPS-C1s analysis spectra. Abstract:Engineered carbon nanomaterials have shown great promise in many applications. With the rapid increase in the production and use of these materials, their environmental behaviors and implications have received much attention. Carbon nanomaterials can undergo significant physical, chemical and biological transformation in the environment, resulting in remarkable changes in their surface charge, hydrophobicity and surface functionality. Environmental transformation of carbon nanomaterials can significantly affect their colloidal stability, transport and toxicity, as well as their capabilities to accumulate/mobilize environmental contaminants and to catalyze environmentally relevant reactions. Thus, environmental transformation largely dictates the environmental behaviors and implications of carbon nanomaterials. This paper summarizes the recent key research findings in the area, with an emphasis on the underlying mechanisms and structure-effect correlations.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and their assemblies represent a unique type of materials in diverse formats and dimensions. They feature a large surface area, superior conductivity, fast charge transport, and intrinsic stability, which are essentially required for various electrochemical energy storage (EES) systems such as Li‐ion batteries, supercapacitors, and redox flow cells. The scaled‐up and reliable production and assembly of carbon nanomaterials is a prerequisite for the development of carbon nanomaterial‐based EES devices. In this progress report, the preparation of carbon nanostructures and the state‐of‐the‐art applications of carbon nanomaterials with different dimensions in versatile EES systems are summarized. The importance of the synergetic effect induced by interactions between nanocarbons and active electrode species is highlighted. The main challenges and prospects in this field are also discussed. Carbon nanomaterials including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and their assemblies represent a unique type of materials for electrochemical energy storage. In this progress report, state‐of‐the‐art applications of carbon nanomaterials with different dimensions in Li‐ion batteries, supercapacitors, and redox flow cells are described and discussed in detail, with the most recent and typical progresses being the focus.
