Abstract:As this collection demonstrates, the underrepresentation and marginalisation of women in the film industry are international problems. This introduction will offer context by outlining some of the most pressing contemporary issues relating to gender inequality and the film industry. It will establish the urgency of having more women in key creative roles with the power to change our stories and storytelling; establish the absence of women as a pressing cultural issue; review the data on women’s position in the industry, in front of and behind the camera; identify issues regarding inequality of funding; highlight the importance of increasing the numbers of women in production roles as an employment equality issue; and evaluate the effectiveness of a number of positive action measures.The changing social and political landscape within which gender equality demands have surfaced and circulated will be explored. The work of activist groups and individuals has also emerged as a force to be reckoned with and their contribution, through lobbying, advocacy and other means of maintaining public awareness, will be assessed here. It will be suggested that an acknowledgement and assessment of power relations is crucial to understanding women’s continuing subordination in the industry, with power being understood as a struggle over interests and conscious and unconscious exclusionary practices.The introduction will also outline the debates that follow in each of the chapters. It will critically review the rate and pace of change; compare and contrast policies and practices that are emerging to address the issues and assess patterns of continuity and change. Chapters are underpinned by a feminist analysis of an industry that has sidelined women’s contribution, providing a coherence to the collection. Women in the International Film Industry: Policy, Practice and Power is a critical feminist intervention at an historical moment internationally.

Abstract:This research investigated the forms of gender discrimination experienced by the female character Jo March in the film "Little Women (2019)" and Jo's efforts against the discrimination in her societal life during the post-Civil War era in America. The study is conducted through a contextual approach and utilizes Simone de Beauvoir's feminist study approach. This research identifies the forms of discrimination experienced by the character Jo March in aspects of work, life, and family. Additionally, the research also reveals the forms of resistance carried out by Jo March in confronting gender discrimination including (1) continuing her work; (2) rejecting gender conventions; (3) pursuing independence in education and financial matters; and (4) advocating for women's rights. This research provides insights into the gender inequality faced by women in America at that time. The findings are expected to inspire women to further advocate for their rights and not give up in the face of the discrimination they experience. This study contributes to the field of gender studies by highlighting the pervasive impact of patriarchal norms on gender discrimination, thereby inspiring women to advocate for their rights and fostering a deeper understanding of gender equality. Additionally, it offers valuable insights for future research, encouraging a broader exploration of feminist issues and the diverse cultural contexts affecting women's roles and autonomy.
Controlling for openness in the male-dominated collaborative networks of the global film industry

Abstract:Studies of gender inequality in film industries have noted the persistence of male domination in creative roles (usually defined as director, producer, writer) and the slow pace of reform. Typical policy remedies are premised on aggregate counts of women as a proportion of overall industry participation. Network science offers an alternative way of identifying and proposing change mechanisms, as it puts emphasis on relationships instead of individuals. Preliminary work on applying network analysis to understand inequality in the film industry has been undertaken. However, in this study we offer a comprehensive approach that enables us to not only understand what inequality in the film industry looks like through the lens of network science but also how we can attempt to address this issue. We offer a data-driven simulation framework that investigates various what-if scenarios when it comes to network evolution. We then assess each of these scenarios with respect to its potential to address gender inequality in the film industry. As suggested by previous studies, inequality is exacerbated when industry networks are most closed. We review evidence from three different national film industries on network relationships in creative teams and identify a high proportion of men who only work with other men. In response to this observation, we test several mechanisms through which industry structures may generate higher levels of openness. Our results reveal that the most critical factor for improving network openness is not simply the statistical improvement of the number of women in a network, nor the removal of men who do not work with women. The most likely behavioural changes to a network will involve the production of connections between women and powerful men.

Abstract:This chapter addresses work ‘segregation’ by sex in the cultural industries. We outline some of the main forms this takes, according to our observations: the high presence of women in marketing and public relations roles; the high numbers of women in production co-ordination and similar roles; the domination of men of more prestigious creative roles; and the domination by men of technical jobs. We then turn to explanation: what gender dynamics drive such patterns of work segregation according to sex? Drawing on interviews, we claim that the following stereotypes or prevailing discourses, concerning the distinctive attributes of women and men, may influence such segregation: that women are more caring, supportive and nurturing; that women are better communicators; that women are ‘better organized’; and that men are more creative because they are less bound by rules.

Abstract:Cet article examine les manières dont les pratiques d’emploi des scénaristes de film au cinéma et à la télévision produisent les inégalités de genre et le plafond de verre à Hollywood. S’appuyant sur l’histoire des industries cinématographiques et télévisuelles et sur une analyse quantitative des registres d’emploi et d’adhésion au Writers Guild of America, West, syndicat des scénaristes de film et de télévision d’Hollywood, cet article retrace l’évolution historique de ces industries, passées d’un modèle hiérarchique à celui du marché. Cette vue d’ensemble permet de mieux comprendre la nature des relations d’emploi à Hollywood. Est alors repérée l’influence que jouent les modes spécifiques d’emploi des femmes scénaristes de film et de télévision sur la construction des inégalités de genre. La conclusion montre pourquoi les solutions, pourtant efficaces ailleurs pour réduire les inégalités de genre, s’avèrent difficiles à mettre en place dans l’industrie culturelle d’Hollywood.

Abstract:Why did women writers do so well in the early American film industry? Content analysis of articles published in Moving Picture World and the New York Times, 1907–27, shows early film studios were flexible in job assignments and collaborated with other studios. This non-bureaucratic configuration was more conducive to female screenwriters than the hierarchical studio system that emerged later in the 1920s. Women writers had more visibility and authority in this network form of organization than in the large bureaucratic studio system. Investigating a case prior to World War II suggests how organizational arrangements affect women's place in the labor market when odds are against equality.

Abstract:European Journal of Cultural Studies, Ahead of Print. This article provides a critical overview of gender equality talk within the media, arts and cultural industries, focusing on a case study of Australian cultural policy discourse from the 1970s to 2020s. It aims to expand on existing understandings of postfeminism and popular feminism by exploring how these sensibilities have been taken up and expressed within arts and cultural policy discourse. How has the problem of the cultural gender gap previously been understood? And how has that changed in light of increased public attention to feminist concerns? While there are important differences across the decades there are also recurring notions of pragmatism, self-empowerment, resilience, vigilance and trickle-down logics – which cultivate a sense of movement without progress. By looking at policy discourses and gender equality talk through a longer lens, considering situations of feminist visibility and invisibility, acceptance and repudiation, and inequalities that are speakable and unspeakable, we see how inequalities in the creative and cultural industries come to be both enduring and endurable.

Gender Struggles in the Portuguese Film Industry

Abstract:The struggle for gender equality in the film industry in Portugal sits at the intersection of several conflicting processes. In Portugal, filmmakers are highly dependent on state funding, which is not decided by movie-industry experts, and film production was hit badly by the economic crisis and the political disinvestment in the cultural sector. As in other countries where the movie industry is small and underfunded, the institutionalization of male dominance in Portugal has been a reality and has led to an environment that shifts from a hostile to benevolent sexism/ageism, combined with historical and cultural fragile activism tradition regarding gender equality. Adding to that, there is also some degree of network closure and gender segregation that tends to exclude women from several areas of the industry. However, there have been signs of a shift that even predates the #MeToo Movement impact in the movie industry. The Portuguese Film Academy was founded in 2011 and has had, since its beginning, a strong female presence in both leadership (two female vice-presidents and a direction with gender parity) and the naming of the academy awards as the Sophia’s, recognizing the contributions of Sophia Mello Breyner Andresen, a prolific female author and poet. Additionally, Portugal also has a center-left government coalition that has elected a Secretary of State of Citizenship and Equality (the state branch for women’s issues). This branch has implemented strategies of intervention that have focused on the promotion of cinema made by women or focused on gender identity issues. In this chapter, we assess the current film industry landscape focusing on gender equality politics, woman movements inside the industry, and the impacts of the economic crisis (from 2008 to the present) on gender issues related to the film industry.
Do Women Suffer from Network Closure? The Moderating Effect of Social Capital on Gender Inequality in a Project-Based Labor Market, 1929 to 2010

Abstract:That social capital matters is an established fact in the social sciences. Less clear, however, is how different forms of social capital affect gender disadvantages in career advancement. Focusing on a project-based type of labor market, namely the U.S. film industry, this study argues that women suffer a “closure penalty” and face severe career disadvantages when collaborating in cohesive teams. At the same time, gender disadvantages are reduced for women who build social capital in open networks with higher degrees of diversity and information flow. Using large-scale longitudinal data on career profiles of about one million performances by 97,657 film actors in 369,099 film productions between the years 1929 and 2010, I analyze career survival models and interaction effects between gender and different measures of social capital and information openness. Findings reveal that female actors have a higher risk of career failure than do their male colleagues when affiliated in cohesive networks, but women have better survival chances when embedded in open, diverse structures. This study contributes to the understanding of how and what type of social capital can be either a beneficial resource for otherwise disadvantaged groups or a constraining mechanism that intensifies gender differences in career advancement.

Abstract:Data science can offer answers to a wide range of social science questions. Here we turn attention to the portrayal of women in movies, an industry that has a significant influence on society, impacting such aspects of life as self-esteem and career choice. To this end, we fused data from the online movie database IMDb with a dataset of movie dialogue subtitles to create the largest available corpus of movie social networks (15,540 networks). Analyzing this data, we investigated gender bias in on-screen female characters over the past century. We find a trend of improvement in all aspects of women`s roles in movies, including a constant rise in the centrality of female characters. There has also been an increase in the number of movies that pass the well-known Bechdel test, a popular--albeit flawed--measure of women in fiction. Here we propose a new and better alternative to this test for evaluating female roles in movies. Our study introduces fresh data, an open-code framework, and novel techniques that present new opportunities in the research and analysis of movies.

Abstract:Past research reveals that fewer women than men possess top management positions and statistics imply that in Sweden only 24 percent of all board members are women (European Commission, 2008). Gender differences are even more obvious in the private sector and this is the reality facing today's graduates, regardless of the fact that the number of female and males taking a business degree in Sweden is approximately the same (SCB, 2006). Networking and social capital is argued to be a vital tool for career development (Yukl, 2006), and former studies present information that men and women take advantage of their networks rather differently (Burke, Rothstein and Bristor, 1995). The main conclusion derived from the interviews in this thesis demonstrates that formal networks were less important than informal networks in order to overcome career obstacles and advance professionally. The networks that were considered most beneficial for the interviewees were the ones that evolved naturally and were reciprocal.

Abstract:This article explores how female university students' abilities to present themselves as 'authentic' engineers are imbricated with discursive constructions of gender and gender equality. The empirical data comes from interviews and video diaries collected with three female engineering students. The analysis demonstrates the power of the Swedish gender equality discourse to inform the students' talk as they negotiate their gendered identities to become intelligible as engineering students and engineers. We suggest that gender equality is used as a resource in the repertoires, but we also demonstrate that this discourse becomes a dilemma in that it limits possibilities for gender performances to go beyond old patterns. Despite this, the article still shows three unique ways of negotiating gender and other social categories in different situations connected to university learning and participation in internships.

Abstract:Sweden is a country with an international reputation for gender equality. The political goal of gender equality is based on feminist analysis of what constitutes a just society according to gender and the fight against patriarchal norms. Despite policy recommendations and legislation that counteract discrimination against women, women still fear traveling by public transport and being out in the evenings. This indicates that Swedish society still has patriarchal norms to deal with. The article is based on qualitative interviews and data retrieved from the Swedish National Statistics, SCB. The interviews explored mobility practices and strategies, experiences with different modes of transport, and reliability, affordability, and comfort of the mobility options available. The results shows that travel choices for women are affected by their concerns about safety and related necessary adaptation to situations identified as threatening. Despite the "mythical mantra" of the gender equal society, Sweden share the patriarchal norms with other countries, that delimits women's use and access to public space and public transport.

Abstract:"Independent Women: From Film to Television" explores the significance for feminism of the increasing representation of women on and behind the screen in television contexts around the world. "Independent" has functioned throughout film and television history as an important euphemism for "feminist," and this special issue investigates how this connection plays out in a contemporary environment that popular feminist discourse is constructing as a golden age of television for women. The original essays offer keen insight into how post-network television is being valued as a new site of independent production for women, and examine how the connotations of creative control that attend this orients perceptions of both female creators and their content as feminist. Together, they provide a compelling perspective on the feminist consequences of how independence and "indie" have intensified as cultural sensibilities that coincide and engage with the digital transformation of television over the past decade.

Abstract:Abstract In contemporary American cinema, the representation of women remains disproportionately limited despite significant social movements advocating for diversity and equality. This study examines the depiction of women in top-grossing films of 2018, contrasting those directed by men with those directed by women, to understand the influence of gender dynamics on cinematic portrayal. Analyzing the top five highest-grossing live-action movies directed by each gender, this research utilizes critical mass and critical actor theories to evaluate the impact of female filmmakers on the representation of women both on and off-screen. Findings reveal that films directed by women feature higher percentages of female characters and crew members in key roles, yet face substantial budgetary and box office disparities compared to their male-directed counterparts. Despite some progress, the film industry continues to exhibit systemic biases, necessitating further structural changes to achieve genuine gender equality in cinematic storytelling. This study underscores the need for increased opportunities and resources for female filmmakers to foster a more inclusive and diverse cinematic landscape.

Abstract:This study explored the prevalence of sexual harassment, consequences of harassment, and reasons for not reporting these experiences through a survey among Swedish female university students (N = 1941). One fourth reported one or more incidents of sexual harassment during the 12 months period prior to the survey. Victims were more often younger and with Swedish-born parents compared with nonvictims. Victimization most frequently occurred at clubs or restaurants and the most frequently reported consequences were anger and worry about being victimized again. Few reported the incidents to the police making this, in part, an invisible problem.

Film adaptations can take several forms, ranging from precise replicas of the original source to innovative story telling. Biographies have had a major influence on movies in recent years. These book-to-film adaptations share the real-life accounts of strong women who demanded positive change as well as the stories of trailblazing women who influenced history. This research paper unveils the brilliance of a modern masterpiece, The Queen of Katwe, a book that has gardened widespread acclaim and seamlessly transformed into the cinematic gem. The film uses a moving narrative to spread the message about gender equality, women’s empowerment, and girls’ education throughout the world. This study explores the film’s narrative strategies, portrayal of major themes, and how well it works as an agent of social change.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to identify and explain a possible gender pay gap in the creative industry. By using the salary information of Hollywood actors, this paper restricts the analysis to a relatively homogenous group of workers. In addition, actors' human capital endowments and past performance can be measured precisely. The factors that impact the salaries of movie stars are likely to influence the pay of other high-wage employees, such as athletes and executives. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a rich panel data set including 178 female and male actors in 973 movies released between 1980 and 2019. Using a random-effects model and the Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition approach, this paper distinguishes between a fraction of the gender pay gap that can be explained and another fraction that cannot be explained. Hence, only the unexplained residual typically obtained by estimating two standard Mincer-type earnings functions is due to discriminatory pay practices. Findings This study reveals a pay difference between female and male actors. Gender-specific representation in leading roles and systematic differences in performance measures can explain this pay difference. While female actors' underrepresentation in leading roles reflects consumer tastes and, therefore, reflects discriminatory attitudes, no evidence can be found for direct pay discrimination in Hollywood's movie business. Originality/value To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first Hollywood study to relying on a rich panel data set that includes various measures of the human capital characteristics of the different individual actors. This paper's theoretical contribution lies in applying classic labor economics reasoning to explain pay determination in Hollywood's movie business.

Abstract:In a move that has now been thoroughly documented, the Anglophone West of the past decade or so has become an environment in which feminism is popular . Film and television, and the discourses around them, have been central to this development, with productions from Eternals (Chloé Zhao, 2021) to Fleabag (2016-2019) to Barbie (Greta Gerwig, 2023) prompting an infoglut of commentary that foregrounds and debates the feminist credentials of a wave of new media content that centres women as both characters and creators. But what does it mean to label this content 'feminist'? Focusing on screen culture and education, the short reflections in this forum consider the tensions of this moment from a variety of perspectives – teaching, screen production, criticism, history and the academy.

Abstract:Media, Culture &Society, Ahead of Print. This article examines how gendered workers experience invisibility in the South Korean television industry, focusing on writers who produce non-fiction programs, such as journalism shows and documentaries. Based on my in-depth interviews with 41 research participants, I reveal how the patriarchal, capitalist, and intensely hierarchical labour management in the industry has shaped an invisible writing workforce who are mostly women. Specifically, my research suggests that the exploitation of this invisible writing workforce takes two forms: the devaluation and underpayment of their labour and putting to work their marginalized subjectivities to enhance the quality of the programs in the production process. Finally, this research shows how writers recognize themselves as invisible workers and understand their invisibility as a form of discrimination and exclusion.
