Abstract:In real life, negotiations occur in specific social contexts where negotiators always play certain roles. The current study explored how negotiators’ roles influence their bargaining outcomes in buy-sell transactions. Based on Neal, Huber, Northcraft (1987), we proposed that the buyer-seller role induces framing effect (s), and that negotiators’ perceived bargaining pie (or the total value of the resources they are considering) mediates negotiators’ roles and outcomes. In buy-sell bargaining settings, the buyer’s role typically induces a loss frame, whereas the seller’s role evokes a gain frame. Thus, are more risk-seeking than sellers. These dynamics prompt to perceive their pie as larger than sellers’, and thus the former outperform the latter. Two hundred and four undergraduate students participated in two single-issue buy-sell simulated negotiation exercises. In both experiments, the power of the two parties was set to be equal by manipulating their number of best alternative to negotiated agreement (BATNA). In experiment 1, we explored how negotiators’ roles influenced their bargaining outcomes. Eighty-two undergraduate students, i.e., 41 dyads, were randomly designated as or sellers. The item for exchange was an eye-protection lamp. The result of experiment 1 showed that the outperformed the sellers, and that the perceived size of the pie mediated the effect of negotiation role on bargaining performance. Moreover, the communication strategies used by the and the did not contribute to their performance, which means that the behavioral differences among the and the did not account for their contrasting performance. In experiment 2, we explored why negotiators’ roles influenced negotiators’ perceived size of the bargaining pie. One hundred and twenty-two participants i.e., 61 dyads, were randomly assigned to the experimental group (20 dyads), control group 1 (20 dyads), and control group 2 (21 dyads), respectively. In the experimental group, participants played the role of and sellers, similar to experiment 1. In control group 1, participants played the role of chief of a tribe and man. The role of caciques was similar to buyers, except they held shells, rather than money to complete the exchange. And the civilized men were similar to sellers, except they exchanged items for shells, rather than money. Participants in control group 2 played the role of buyers and sellers as in the experimental group, while the medium of exchange was shells as in the control group 1. Each seller (civilized man) held a watch as the item for exchange. The reservation price of (caciques) and (civilized men) was set to be equal to avoid the confounding caused by the difference of the reservation price between the two parties. Results of Experiment 2 showed that in the experimental condition, buyers’ perceived size of the pie was larger than sellers’, whereas no differences in perceived pie size were observed in the two control groups. These results suggest that the perception difference between buyer and seller can only be accounted for by buyer-seller roles, only when money was used as the medium of exchange. These findings reveal how negotiators’ roles influence their bargaining outcomes via their perceptions about the size of the pie. This research also suggests that the function of role may be independent of negotiators’ power differentials and communication strategies. Practical implications of this research include the following: Although negotiation practitioners realized that their respective roles exerted some influence on their performance, they did not specifically understand the role of those context features in negotiation nor did they try to modify or manage them. Also, this study suggests that and could be aware that they are acting in accord with the loss (for buyer) or gain (for seller) frame, while the other party is behaving according to the opposite frame. Therefore, negotiators could adjust their perceived pie intentionally to avoid the influence of this cognitive bias.

Abstract:Communal eating, whether in feasts or everyday meals with family or friends, is a human universal, yet it has attracted surprisingly little evolutionary attention. I use data from a UK national stratified survey to test the hypothesis that eating with others provides both social and individual benefits. I show that those who eat socially more often feel happier and are more satisfied with life, are more trusting of others, are more engaged with their local communities, and have more friends they can depend on for support. Evening meals that result in respondents feeling closer to those with whom they eat involve more people, more laughter and reminiscing, as well as alcohol. A path analysis suggests that the causal direction runs from eating together to bondedness rather than the other way around. I suggest that social eating may have evolved as a mechanism for facilitating social bonding.

Abstract:If you are sharing a meal with a companion, how best to make sure you get your favourite mouthfuls? Ethiopian Dinner is a game in which two players take turns eating morsels from a common plate. Each morsel comes with a pair of utility values measuring its tastiness to the two players. Kohler and Chandrasekaharan discovered a good strategy -- a subgame perfect equilibrium, to be exact -- for this game. We give a new visual proof of their result. The players arrive at the equilibrium by figuring out their last move first and working backward. We conclude that it's never too early to start thinking about dessert.

Abstract:Mealtimes shared with other people define how, what, how much, and with whom we eat. On such occasions, whether in private or public spaces, and as formal or informal events, our eating practices are inseparable from our interactions with other people. In this Editorial for the Special Issue on Interactional approaches to eating together and shared mealtimes, we provide an overview of the interdisciplinary field of research on eating together and shared mealtimes to illustrate the breadth and depth of work that has been developed in this area to date. The overview is divided into three broad clusters of research that focus primarily on (1) cultural or societal aspects, (2) individual outcomes, or (3) interactional practices. Commonalities across these clusters are discussed, the need for more research across a greater global and cultural diversity of eating practices is highlighted, and the potential for interdisciplinary collaboration on research on eating together and shared mealtimes across diverse scientific disciplines is explored. The papers in this Special Issue showcase a sample of contemporary work from within the cluster of research on interactional practices, and a brief overview of these papers is discussed. Finally, it is argued that as a common area of interest, social interaction as the foundation of eating practices within shared mealtimes poses considerable potential for interdisciplinary collaboration across scientific disciplines, and between scientists, professionals, and participants from the study populations.

Abstract:In the Ultimatum Game, two players are offered a chance to win a pie. The proposer suggests how to split the pie. The responder can either accept or reject the deal. If an agreement is not reached, neither player gets anything. Both game theory and evolutionary game theory predict the rational solution that the proposer offers the smallest possible share and the responder accepts it. Fairness thus requires additional mechanisms for natural selection to favor it. Studies to date assumed that individuals have competed for the fixed size of pies, in sharp contrast with real situations, where randomness is ubiquitous. Here we study the impact of random allocation of pies on the evolution of fairness in the Ultimatum Game. Interestingly, we find that the evolution of fairness can be promoted by the randomness associated with the size of pies, without the support of any additional evolutionary mechanisms.

Abstract:To address the growing obesity crisis, governments are promoting home cooking to improve dietary habits. Home-cooked food-sharing platforms, a manifestation of the sharing economy, offer consumers healthy food options. While the economic benefits of the sharing economy have been extensively studied, little is known about its impact on non-economic factors, such as consumers’ health. To address this gap, we conduct an empirical study using data from a mobile kitchen-sharing platform and four controlled experiments to investigate whether the sharing economy helps consumers develop healthy eating habits. We use manual coding and machine learning methods to evaluate the healthiness of over 180,000 unique dishes and examine food provision and consumption on the platform. Our findings indicate that as consumers use the platform more frequently, they tend to consume more unhealthy food. Additionally, sellers who receive more orders and earn more revenue tend to offer less healthy food over time. Two controlled experiments prove consumers are more likely to order unhealthy food online. Furthermore, these experiments provide causal evidence that consumer food consumption patterns drive seller food provision rather than vice versa. Our results suggest that the sharing economy may have negative consequences due to misaligned interests between sellers and consumers. Fortunately, we identify conditions that may mitigate these effects in empirical analyses and two experiments. Specifically, consumers who choose dine-in options (as opposed to takeaway) and those who order for groups (as opposed to individual orders) tend to make healthier food choices on the platform due to impression management motivation.

Abstract:Sharing platforms gained importance in recent years. Little is known about whether and why novel means to digitally share meals are incorporated into people's everyday portfolios of everyday food provisioning. The objective of this paper is accordingly to explore why digitally mediated meal sharing is incorporated (or not) into an array of everyday food provisioning practices. We use observations of and interviews with users of the Dutch platform Thuisgekookt , on which home cooks offer meals to be picked up by neighbors. Our practice theoretically inspired analysis starts with the concept of teleoaffective structures. These consist of a teleological dimension which points to objects (such as food) motivating action. The second, affective dimension indicates motivational engagement and emotional states. Three teleoaffective episodes - anticipating, actualizing and assessing - assist in explaining why meal sharing recruits practitioners (or not). We find that while meal sharing has advantages over other food provisioning practices, the generated affect is often not sufficient to recruit the new means of digitally mediated meal sharing in daily life, especially because of meal sharing's relative inconvenience. Temporal conditions as well as a limited array of food provisioning practices, however, afford coordination of meal sharing with other everyday practices. The three episodes of teleoaffectivity enabled the understanding that meal sharing is not only evaluated on its own terms, but also anticipated and assessed in relation to other options and the recruitment of practitioners proofed difficult.

Abstract:We conducted two studies to investigate the influence of food sharing on people's social evaluation. In Study 1, the results of an online survey revealed that Chinese adults expected voluntary food sharing to influence the recipient's social evaluation of the sharer. In Study 2, we ran a laboratory-based experiment in which each participant broke bread with one of two unacquainted individuals. When the participants could choose whom to share food with, they rated the selected person as being more prosocial than the person they did not choose. These results demonstrate the influence of voluntary food sharing with choice on people's social evaluation of unacquainted individuals, and shed some light on the influence of eating behavior on social perception.

Abstract:Purpose In view of the intense competition between businesses in the sharing economy and the conventional hospitality industry, this study aims to compare consumers’ private social dining and restaurant dining experiences. Design/methodology/approach In-depth interviews with 29 private social diners were conducted to yield 10 dining experiential domains, which were then validated using online survey data from 840 diners across four sample groups – local (Hong Kong) private social diners, local (Hong Kong) restaurant diners, overseas private social diners and overseas restaurant diners – to empirically examine a mechanism through which the dining experience influences diners’ psychological and behavioral responses. Findings The significant differences emerged among the four sample groups in their evaluations of dining experiences. The mediating role of memorability appeared weaker in overseas settings than in local settings. Practical implications The findings suggest restaurateurs be creative and open-minded in designing dining experiences that go beyond food-related satisfaction. Destination marketers should also find the findings insightful because they can diversify their catering offerings by differentiating private social dining with conventional restaurants. Originality/value The study presents a novel angle on experiential consumption in the sharing economy to focus on food-sharing activities, which is thought to complement the currently skewed research focus in the sharing economy. A theoretically driven mechanism was also validated to explain the experiential differences between conventional restaurants and private social dining.

Abstract:Negotiations that involve contributions or distributions of shared resources are ubiquitous. However, the empirical literature has predominantly focused on how parties negotiate the exchange of exclusive resources in transaction negotiations (e.g., buyer–seller negotiations) and ignored shared-resource negotiations. We develop a novel negotiation task to investigate how parties resolve conflicts over the contribution versus distribution of resources via negotiations. We propose that when parties negotiate the allocations of shared resources, their exclusive ownership becomes the dominant reference point in the negotiation which induces reference-dependent frames throughout the negotiation process. Whereas negotiating contributions should induce give frames that highlight losses, negotiating distributions should induce take frames that highlight gains. These different allocation frames should, therefore, distinctly affect parties’ tradeoff aversion (i.e., willingness to trade off exclusive resources against shared resources), their allocation behaviors, and the quality of the final negotiation agreements. We further predict that these effects of give and take frames should be reversed when negotiating burdens. Across two preliminary and one preregistered, incentivized, and interactive negotiation experiments, we show that parties reach less integrative agreements when they have to contribute their own benefits to the shared ownership (i.e., inducing a give frame that highlights losses) than when they have to distribute benefits into their exclusive ownership (i.e., inducing a take frame that highlights gains). For negotiating the allocations of burdens, this finding reversed and parties reached less integrative agreements when they had to distribute burdens to the exclusive ownership (i.e., inducing a take frame that highlights losses) than when they had to contribute own burdens to shared ownership (i.e., inducing a give frame that highlights gains). Our findings suggest that parties’ aversion against tradeoffs prevents negotiators from reaching integrative agreements. The present studies are among the first to systematically elucidate negotiation processes over the contribution versus distribution of shared resources and point towards future research pathways to overcome reference-dependent biases.

Abstract:This article documents a robust pattern from diverse sequential bargaining settings: agents favor offers that split the difference between the previous two offers. Our empirical settings include used cars, insurance claims, home sale, trade tariffs, a TV game show, eBay, and auto‐rickshaws. These even‐split offers are more likely to be accepted, less likely to spur exit by the opponent, and more likely to be followed by subsequent split‐the‐difference offers if bargaining continues. We propose several theoretical frameworks to explain this behavior, including an inference argument under which split‐the‐difference offers can be viewed as an equal split of the potential surplus.

Abstract:Cooperating with competitors can be a mutually beneficial strategy for companies. To achieve continuous gains from the partnership, profit-sharing rules for the collective benefits are critical. This paper proposes a new allocation scheme that focuses on sustainable relationships based on cooperative game theory. Our min-variance solution deploys joint profits by minimizing the intent to form sub-groups, thus ensuring the alliance's stability. The min-variance is reasonable in a network collaboration where the preservation of the network itself is essential. By application to a numerical example of an airline joint venture, we examine the validity of the proposed distribution rule in the cooperation-allocation problem. The collective surplus of logistics collaboration is suggested by a mixed-integer programming model to solve the optimal value of combinations of the multi-commodity flow problem under the network shared. In addition, the results are interpreted by comparison with other solutions in cooperation game theory, such as the Shapley value, the τ–value, and the nucleolus. We offer further insights into changes in profit-sharing using a sensitivity analysis considering efficiency abatement.

Abstract:Social and human sciences have demonstrated again and again how commensality—the practice of eating together—has substantial implications, across time and place, for how social life is configured. Closely related phenomena have also been explored in biologically oriented sciences focused on human behavior. Yet, there is still little dialogue between these and the mainstream social science analysis of food and eating, despite their shared interests in the role played by food and eating in the organization of social life. The paper strengthens this dialogue and proposes that eating together be analyzed as a social tool: an innovation for the organization of complex behavior. More precisely, the proposition is that the habitual, routinized, and ritualized communal eating we see today developed into a social tool for exercising a diverse set of biologically evolved social traits. Through in‐depth analyses of food sharing, meal sharing, and feasting, I propose three distinct propositions of commensality as a social tool: social coordination of needs (mainly nutritional); social order and complex interaction (primarily conversations); and the symbolic display of stratified social relations. Understanding communal eating as a social tool thus opens up for a unified theory to explain seemingly disparate social phenomena, such as the underlying sociality displayed through different meal arrangements. For a thorough understanding of this, intensified conversations across the borders of scientific paradigms are required. Commensality is a social tool that satisfies both the social and biological appetites.

Abstract:Cooking and eating together is a prominent social experience amongst families. Older adults and their adult children who live apart often communicate about these experiences to stay aware of each other's health and wellbeing. In this paper, we examine current practices surrounding the communication of eating habits and meal preparation between older adults and their adult children living apart. We interviewed 18 older parents and nine adult children to understand their experiences. While most participants found the sharing of eating experiences to be rewarding and enlightening of family health behaviors, family roles and contexts could create tensions around this type of conversation. Applying the lens of symbolic interactionism theory, we examine how changing roles and contexts influence the conversation of eating and meal preparation and how participants manage tensions. We discuss future design opportunities to support family collaboration around food and eating, accounting for the transition of roles and contexts.

Abstract:While study abroad homestays are often credited with providing opportunities for language and cultural learning, at times they can be characterized by communicative, cross‐cultural, or interpersonal discord. In documenting these conflicts and their consequences, research to date has relied largely on students' self‐reports, often focusing on their negative effect on students' orientations to learning. Grounded in Vygotskian sociocultural theory, this study adopts a longitudinal approach to the multimodal, multisensory process of learning table etiquette in Chinese homestays, including the perspectives of both hosts and students. Analysis of communicative interactions, photographs, diaries, and interviews reveals that the hosts directed students' attention to their inadequate etiquette at mealtimes through contextualized directives and accusations. These face‐threatening acts stipulated dos and don'ts while also ultimately cultivating some habits of virtuous eating. Over time, face‐threatening acts became repertoires of communicative resources invoked by students to control their social and mental activity. The findings suggest that students and hosts can collaboratively resolve homestay problems, transforming them into opportunities for learning.

Abstract:The problem of dividing a pie between two persons is considered. An arbitration procedure for dividing the pie is proposed, in which the arbitrator is a random number generator. In this procedure, the arbitrator makes an offer to the players at each step, and the players can either accept or reject the arbitrator's offer. If there is no consensus, negotiations move on to the next step. At the same time, the arbitrator punishes the rejecting player by reducing the amount of the resource in favor of the consenting player. A subgame perfect equilibrium is found in the process.

Abstract:This research aims to demystify the links between meal-sharing experience, overall satisfaction, and behavioral intentions (e.g., re-purchase and word-of-mouth) based on social practice theory and planned behavior theory. It utilized a questionnaire to test the relationships through the purposeful sampling of 217 Indian domestic travelers. The current study applied both the symmetric method of partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and the asymmetric method of fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). The PLS-SEM results showed that only the hospitality dimension of the meal-sharing experience positively relates to travelers' overall satisfaction, re-purchase, and word-of-mouth (WoM) intentions. Apart from this, the results of fsQCA demonstrated several sufficient combinations of dimensions to generate satisfaction, re-purchase, and WoM intentions. It has several practical implications for hosts of meal-sharing platforms as to how they can improve their guests' experience to delight and get them to re-purchase their services.

Abstract:We conducted two studies on participants from China and the USA to investigate their beliefs about food sharing. In Study 1, the participants were asked to rate the influence of different types of sharing on the interpersonal relationships between two individuals. Compared to sharing non-food material, both groups expected sharing food to exert a more positive influence on the intimacy and mutual trust between the sharer and the recipient. In Study 2A, the participants were asked to rate to which extent it is appropriate to share a certain food with another person. The results revealed that the solid or liquid state and the type of foods influenced both groups of participants? beliefs about whether a food is appropriate for sharing. In Study 2B, the participants were asked to rate the likelihood of ordering certain foods when they were eating alone, eating together, or sharing food with another person in a restaurant scenario. When sharing food with other people, both groups of participants were less likely to order foods that were inappropriate for sharing and more likely to order foods that were appropriate for sharing, thus suggesting the influence of beliefs about food sharing on food choices. Despite some crosscultural differences in both studies, the results revealed some cross-cultural shared beliefs about food sharing. These findings suggest that people?s beliefs regarding the positive influence of food sharing on interpersonal relationships influence food choices and may help explain why foods are shared while eating with others even there is no social obligation to do so.

Abstract:Leveraging an established exercise in negotiation education, we build a novel dataset for studying how the use of language shapes bilateral bargaining. Our dataset extends existing work in two ways: 1) we recruit participants via behavioral labs instead of crowdsourcing platforms and allow participants to negotiate through audio, enabling more naturalistic interactions; 2) we add a control setting where participants negotiate only through alternating, written numeric offers. Despite the two contrasting forms of communication, we find that the average agreed prices of the two treatments are identical. But when subjects can talk, fewer offers are exchanged, negotiations finish faster, the likelihood of reaching agreement rises, and the variance of prices at which subjects agree drops substantially. We further propose a taxonomy of speech acts in negotiation and enrich the dataset with annotated speech acts. Our work also reveals linguistic signals that are predictive of negotiation outcomes.
