Abstract:Dynamic analysis of a two-layered elasto-piezoelectric composite hollow sphere under spherically symmetric deformation is developed. An unknown function of time is first introduced in terms of the charge equation of electrostatics and then the governing equations of piezoelectric layer, in which the unknown function of time is involved, are derived. By the method of superposition, the dynamic solution for elastic and piezoelectric layers is divided into quasi-static and dynamic parts. The quasi-static part is treated independently by the state space method and the dynamic part is obtained by the separation of variables method. By virtue of the obtained quasi-static and dynamic parts, a Volterra integral equation of the second kind with respect to the unknown function of time is derived by using the electric boundary conditions for piezoelectric layer. Interpolation method is employed to solve the integral equation efficiently. The transient responses for elastic and electric fields are finally determined. Numerical results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of a multilayered, perfectly bonded piezoelectric/magnetostrictive composite hollow cylinder under radial deformation is investigated. The superposition method, the state space method as well as the separation of variables method are elegantly integrated in the solution approach. The governing equations are finally transformed into two Volterra integral equations of the second kind with respect to two functions of time. The elastic, electric and magnetic fields are finally obtained according to solving the integral equations. Free vibrations and transient responses are demonstrated by numerical experiments.

Abstract:The theoretical study of the control of stress is developed for a rotating infinite hollow multilayered radially polarized piezoelectric cylinder. The exact solution is obtained by means of the state-space method. As an illustrative example, the distribution of the radial and tangential stresses in a rotating hollow internally pressurized five-layered piezoelectric cylinder subjected to different electric potential at the internal and external surfaces are performed. Numerical results show that the distribution of the stress can be controlled by applying appropriate electric potentials at the correct surfaces.

Abstract:Based on the general solution of the three-dimensional problem for piezoelectric materials, the problem of a piezoelectric cone subjected to concentrated loads at its apex is solved by trial-and-error method. The displacements and stresses are explicitly given for the cases of compression in the presence of point charge, bending and torsion. These solutions are simple in form and convenient for application. When the apex angle 2α equals π, the solutions for concentrated force, point charge and torsion reduce to solutions of the half-space problem.

Abstract:The piezoelectric hollow sphere sensor is analyzed theoretically to predict the dynamic pressure with the knowledge of electric potential difference between the internal and external surfaces. The analysis is based on the three-dimensional theory of spherically isotropic piezoelectricity and is suitable for the piezoelectric hollow sphere sensor with arbitrary thickness. Under the free electric charge boundary condition, the relation between the dynamic pressure and the measured electric potential difference is derived as a second kind Volterra integral equation by means of the separation of variables method. The dynamic pressure is determined by solving the integral equation.

Abstract:Theoretical analysis is developed for an infinite composite hollow cylinder constructed of elastic and pyroelectric layers subjected to axisymmetric dynamic thermal loads. The solutions are based on piezothermoelastic theory. In terms of the charge equation of electrostatics, the radial electric displacement is first expressed as a product of a known function of radial coordinate and an unknown function of time. Then, the solution for the elastic field is obtained by the method of superposition. Finally, by means of the electric potential boundary conditions, a second kind of Volterra integral equation, which can be solved by the interpolation method, is derived to determine the unknown function of time. As a numerical experiment, the transient responses for the uniformly heated steel/CdSe composite hollow cylinder are illustrated graphically.

Abstract:By means of the three-dimensional general solution in displacement functions (weighted harmonic functions) for piezoelectric materials, the general solution of stress components and electric displacements expressed by the displacement functions is derived by use of the constitutive relation and the equilibrium equations. Based on this general solution, a series of problems is solved by the trial-and-error method, including circular plate (or cylinder), annular plate (or hollow cylinder), cone and hollow cone. These problems are circular plates and cylinders under uniform radial or axial tension and electric displacements as well as pure bending, simply-supported circular plates subjected to uniformly distributed loads, rotating disks and circular shafts, cones or hollow cones subjected to concentrated forces plus charge and concentrated force couple at their apex, etc. Analytical solutions to various problems are obtained. When the cone apex angle 2α equals π, the solutions for the cases of concentrated forces plus point charges and torsion reduce to the simple and practical solutions of the half-space problem.

Abstract:The paper presents a theoretical method to investigate the multiple scattering of shear waves and dynamic stress around a circular cavity in a semi-infinite functionally graded piezoelectric material. The analytical solutions of wave fields are expressed by employing wave function expansion method and the expanded mode coefficients are determined by satisfying the boundary conditions of the cavity. Image method is used to satisfy the free boundary condition of the semi-infinite structure. According to the analytical expression of this problem, the numerical solutions of the dynamic stress concentration factor around the cavity are presented. The effects of the piezoelectric property, the buried depth of the cavity, the incident wave number and the nonhomogeneous parameter of materials on the dynamic stress around the cavity are analyzed. Analyses show that the piezoelectric property has great effect on the dynamic stress in the region of intermediate frequency and the effect increases with increasing wave number. When the nonhomogeneous parameter of materials is less than zero, it has less influence on the maximum dynamic stress around the cavity; however, it has greater influence on the distribution of the dynamic stress around the cavity. When the nonhomogeneous parameter of materials is greater than zero, it has greater influence on both the maximum dynamic stress and the distribution of dynamic stress around the cavity, especially in the case that the buried depth is comparatively small.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials are used widely in sonar transducers and intelligent structures. These materials are brittle and could fail in service due to stress concentration around flaws or defects that were introduced by manufacturing. The analytic solution of stress field is obtained for a piezoelectric material with a spheriodal inclusion. By appropriate selection of the piezoelectric constants, the stress concentration can be suppressed.

Abstract:In this paper, a method to calculate the dynamic stress concentration around the triangular defect of piezoelectric material under electroelastic coupling is studied and applied to the promising barium calcium zirconate titanate. Firstly, the electroelastic governing equation is decomposed by decoupling technique, and the analytical solutions of elastic wave field and electric field are obtained by wave function expansion method. Then, the conformal transformation is used to simplify the triangle boundary into a circular boundary, and the corresponding modal coefficients are determined according to the simplified boundary conditions. Finally, the analytical solution of the dynamic stress concentration factor can be obtained according to the constitutive equation. Substitute the relevant material parameters of (Ba0.85Ca0.15)(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3 and set different temperatures, Ce doping amount, and incident wave number for numerical simulation. The numerical results show that the incident wave number, piezoelectric properties, and the shape parameters and deflection angle of the triangular defect have a great influence on the dynamic stress around the defect, and some meaningful laws are summarized through analysis.

Analysis of General Stress and Displacement in Piezoelectric Ceramics with an Elliptic Hole

Abstract:Considering exact electric boundary conditions on the hole surface, the explicit and closed-form expressions of general stress function and displacement in the medium were presented on the basis of the general stress and displacement expressions. When the elliptic hole is reduced to a main crack, the solution for the conductive crack is obtained. It is shown that the present solution is a more general result for practical piezoelectric components. Furthermore, the general stress distribution was given on the rim of the elliptic hole induced by ferroelectric domain switching, which is very important for researching the toughening in ferroelectrics due to domain switching.

Abstract:The scattering behavior of elastic P-waves by a transversely isotropic piezoelectric cylinder embedded in an infinite polymer matrix is studied. The method of wavefunction expansion is used to formulate the problem. Numerical calculations are carried out for the distribution of stresses, mechanical displacements and electrical potential around the piezoelectric cylinder, respectively. Effects of normalized frequency and incident angle of incident waves, radius of the cylinder on the dynamic stress and electric field concentrations are investigated in detail. It is found that the effect of the incident angle on the dynamic stress concentration is markedly only for the low frequency waves and the maxima of the magnitudes of stresses shift toward the incident side of the piezoelectric cylinder as the normalized frequency increases. This study is useful in designing piezoelectric composites, especially for the case of piezoelectric cylinders aligned sparsely in a matrix medium.

Abstract:This paper presents an analytical solution for stress wave propagation in piezoelectric fiber reinforced laminated composites subjected to thermal shock loading. The thermoelectrodynamic equation for each separate material layer is solved by means of finite Hankel transforms and Laplace transforms. Then by using the interface continuity conditions between the piezoelectric fiber layer and the matrix layer, and the boundary condition at the external surface of the piezoelectric fiber reinforced laminated composite the unknown constants are determined. Thus, an exact solution for stress wave propagation in piezoelectric fiber reinforced laminated composites subjected to thermal shock loading is obtained. From the exact analytical expression and the corresponding numerical example, this paper reveals some phenomena of the dynamic focusing effect of a piezoelectric fiber reinforced composite laminated cylinder subjected to thermal shock of a transitory temperature change. The dynamic focusing effect gives rise to very higher tensile stress magnitudes and electric potential at the center of the piezoelectric fiber, which easily results in a fracture along the axial direction of the piezoelectric fiber at the higher tensile stress region. It is important to know the mechanism of the dynamic focusing effect of the piezoelectric fiber reinforced laminated composites to evaluate the dynamic strength and electric signal of the composite systems.

Abstract:Potential function and complex function in the elliptic coordinate system are employed to solve the problem of scattering harmonic plane waves by multiple elliptic cavities in water saturated soil medium. The steady state Biot’s dynamic equations of poroelasticity are uncoupled into Helmholtz equations via given potentials. The stresses and pore water pressures are obtained by using complex functions in elliptic coordinates with certain boundary conditions. Finally, the dynamic stresses for the case of two interacting elliptic cavities are obtained and discussed in details via a numerical example.

Abstract:The dynamic stress and electric displacement intensity factors of impermeable cracks in homogeneous piezoelectric materials and interface cracks in piezoelectric bimaterials are evaluated by extending the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM). In this method, a piezoelectric plate is divided into polygons. Each polygon is treated as a scaled boundary finite element subdomain. Only the boundaries of the subdomains need to be discretized with line elements. The dynamic properties of a subdomain are represented by the high order stiffness and mass matrices obtained from a continued fraction solution, which is able to represent the high frequency response with only 3-4 terms per wavelength. The semi-analytical solutions model singular stress and electric displacement fields in the vicinity of crack tips accurately and efficiently. The dynamic stress and electric displacement intensity factors are evaluated directly from the scaled boundary finite element solutions. No asymptotic solution, local mesh refinement or other special treatments around a crack tip are required. Numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed technique with the analytical solutions and the results from the literature. The present results highlight the accuracy, simplicity and efficiency of the proposed technique. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
