Abstract:Artificial intelligence is reshaping building design processes to be smarter and automated. Considering the increasingly wide application of shear wall systems in high-rise buildings and envisioning the massive benefit of automated structural design, this paper proposes a generative adversarial network (GAN)-based shear wall design method, which learns from existing shear wall design documents and then performs structural design intelligently and swiftly. To this end, structural design datasets were prepared via abstraction, semanticization, classification, and parameterization in terms of building height and seismic design category. The GAN model improved its shear wall design proficiency through adversarial training supported by data and hyper-parametric analytics. The performance of the trained GAN model was appraised against the metrics based on the confusion matrix and the intersection-over-union approach. Finally, case studies were conducted to evaluate the applicability, effectiveness, and appropriateness of the innovative GAN-based structural design method, indicating significant speed-up and comparable quality.

Abstract:The preliminary layout design of the shear wall is critical for the design of reinforced concrete shear wall structures. Deep learning-based methods can learn design experience from existing design data and generate new designs efficiently. However, existing research is insufficient for the design of the local layout of shear walls in critical zones. The attention mechanism can identify the critical zones in an image that must be focused on and provides a new potential solution for improving the local design of shear wall structures. Therefore, this study proposed an attention-enhanced generative adversarial network model, named StructGAN-AE, for the intelligent design of shear wall structures. Additionally, a pre-training method was proposed to overcome the limitation of data shortage. Case studies showed that, compared with existing models, StructGAN-AE could generate a more reasonable local layout of shear walls in critical zones, such as elevator shafts, and the rationality of the generated shear walls was improved. The comprehensive evaluation metric of shear wall design results was improved by up to 30%. In terms of structural performance, the shear wall structures designed using StructGAN-AE demonstrated better anti-torsion performance, closer to engineers' design, and lower consumption of concrete and steel than those designed using existing methods.

Abstract:In the design of high-rise buildings, the lateral structural system that resists seismic and wind actions often dominates the overall design, and as a result, the optimum design of the lateral structural system is important for material efficiency. This paper aims to present a new design methodology that relies on an extended Evolutionary Structural Optimization (ESO) method to optimize the shear wall layout for the design of high-rise buildings. By discretizing all the shear walls of the ground structure into wall elements, different shear wall layouts were described by a binary matrix where '0' and '1' indicate the absence or presence of a wall element respectively. The proposed framework borrowed the intuitive concept of the ESO method, where the less stressed wall elements in the structure were gradually removed but the highly stressed wall elements were reserved. The conceptual design method was combined with the optimization algorithm to control the optimization process and to reduce structural eccentricity considering architecture, strength and serviceability constraints. Then, the structural weight could be automatically minimized under multiple loading cases and design constraints. By integrating the commercially available ETABS, a dedicated optimization software with an independent interface was developed and details were also presented in this paper for practical software development. The proposed framework was used to optimize the layouts of different shear wall structures, and case studies showed that the proposed framework could optimize shear wall structures with a material saving of up to 14% compared to the conventional design, which proved the feasibility and effectiveness of the framework. The paper can therefore be referenced by other researchers and software engineers to further explore the layout optimization of shear wall structures and to reduce material usage for a more sustainable design.

Abstract:The scope of this paper is to present a novel design methodology that relies on the tabu search (TS) algorithm and aims to optimize the shear wall layout of high-rise buildings. By discretizing the distributable area of a shear wall into wall elements, different possible shear wall layouts can be described by binary code where '0' and '1' indicate the absence or presence of a wall element respectively. Furthermore, the conceptual design is combined with the optimization algorithm to play a guiding role in the optimization, and the surrogate model is built through support vector machine (SVM) to drive the optimization process with historical data and reduce the cost of the real model's evaluation. Then, the structural weight can be automatically minimized with constraints on the story drift and period ratio and an optimization program with an independent interface is compiled in this paper. Abstract:In multi-tower buildings, the towers interact with each other because the bodies of each tower are connected by a podium, thus making the optimization design of this type of building challenging. Optimizing such structures will enable safer designs and the use of less material. To optimize the layout of shear walls in multi-tower building systems, an extended evolutionary structural optimization method based on a conceptual design method is proposed herein. The optimization process considers a complete range of professionally codified and construction constraints of building designs, making the method practical. Finally, some practical examples are presented to demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the efficiency of the shear wall layout optimization for multi-tower buildings and obtain a result that satisfies the requirements of the specification.

Abstract:The generative intelligent design of building structures has been a rapidly evolving field in recent years, with shear wall structures efficiently designed using generative adversarial networks (GANs). Nevertheless, using RGB images to represent structural design drawings may not accurately capture the correlations and distinctions between building components, leading to shear-wall structure design inaccuracies. To address these challenges, this study proposes an optimized data representation and understanding method for the intelligent design of shear wall structures. Specifically, a component-based feature space data representation method was introduced to achieve a more accurate description of drawing features. A feature mask was also employed to precisely locate the key target areas for generating shear walls, enhancing the model's understanding of the data features. Additionally, a GAN with global and local discriminators was established to enhance the neural network's ability to generate shear wall designs at both the global image and local component levels. Finally, a training method for a GAN with dual discriminators based on feature masks is proposed. Experimental analyses and case studies showed that, compared with existing widely used GAN-based designs, the structural designs generated by the GAN trained with the proposed data representation and understanding methods demonstrated superior consistency with engineer-designed structures and outperformed structural seismic resistance.

Abstract:Compared to the increasingly programmable and automated structural analysis methods, the current joint design suffers from long design time, poor quality and a low degree of automation. Developing an efficient and intelligent method to generate structurally novel and high-performing joints has become an urgent task. This paper combines artificial intelligence, topology optimization and reverse engineering techniques to develop a method named HD-JointGEN, and elaborates the idea and implementation steps of this method through an actual engineering example of a single-layer reticulated shell structure. The joints generated in batch by HD-JointGEN are analyzed and evaluated, revealing that the selected representative joint can reduce self-weight by 29.55%, maximum displacement by 0.99%, and maximum equivalent stress by 1.28% compared to the topology optimization joint. HD-JointGEN not only automatically generates a variety of innovative and previously unimaginable joints but also offers design solutions with superior force performances. It leads the research on intelligent generative design of the connection in complex three-dimensional structures and has broad application prospects.

Abstract:Deep learning-driven intelligent generative design for building structures provides novel insights into intelligent construction. In a structural scheme design, the cross-sectional design of the shear wall components is critical. However, the current manual method is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and a statistical regression-based design is insufficiently accurate. Satisfying the requirements of a complex shear wall design in the real world is difficult for both methods. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) can extract implicit design laws by learning from design data and conduct end-to-end design effectively and rapidly. Although GANs have been adopted for intelligent structural design, some design rules established by competent engineers are difficult to capture. Hence, this study developed and subsequently adopted a rule-embedded GAN called StructGAN-Rule to address the demand for a rapid and accurate cross-sectional design of shear wall components. Specifically, a representation method that integrates design images and multiple design conditions was first established, which was followed by the construction of the training data set. Subsequently, based on the design rules, a differentiable tensor operator was built as a rule evaluator, which was embedded in the GAN to guide and constrain the training process. Finally, following the training of StructGAN-Rule, intelligent generative cross-sectional design based on the developed postprocessing method was effectively completed. Case studies on typical shear wall structures demonstrated that the StructGAN-Rule design satisfied the rule constraints well and was highly consistent with the design of engineers (approximately 1% difference). Moreover, the design efficiency was improved 6-10 times compared with that of the latter.

Abstract:Intelligent design technology for shear wall structures has great potential for enhancing design efficiency and addressing the challenges of tedious and repetitive design tasks. Recently, there has been a surge in the development of this technology. However, existing deep learning-based design methods for shear wall structures suffer from poor quality and usability issues. To address these challenges, this study proposes an intelligent design and optimization system for shear wall structures based on large language models (LLMs) and generative artificial intelligence (AI). The system employs an LLM as the core controller, which interacts with engineers to interpret their language descriptions and translate them into executable computer code. Subsequently, the system utilizes the corresponding structural generation and optimization methods to accomplish intelligent design tasks automatically. Furthermore, the system incorporates such critical factors as the empirical rules, mechanical performance, and material consumption into the structural optimization process. A unique three-level, two-stage optimization method is constructed based on topology, pattern, and size to enhance the overall design quality. Being able to complete the entire workflow of architectural drawing processing, structural scheme generation, and analysis model establishment, the proposed system enables automated and efficient design of shear wall structures. Through the analysis and validation of multiple cases, it was demonstrated that this system can significantly speed up the design by approximately 30 times compared to that of traditional methods whilst ensuring the safety and cost-effectiveness of the design schemes. Consequently, this study provides valuable insights for the advancement of automated structural design undertakings.

Abstract:The high‐rise residential shear wall structure is a crucial component of urban building clusters, while the limited availability of detailed structural information becomes a critical bottleneck in improving the accuracy of seismic performance assessment for high‐rise residential shear wall buildings in urban areas. Based on easily obtainable yet limited structural data at the urban scale, this paper proposes a method to address the shortcomings of existing research on reconstructing hidden structural information and enhance the accuracy of structural seismic performance assessment. It includes a physics‐constrained generative adversarial network module and a fuzzy inference system module to reconstruct the spatial arrangement of shear walls, and material strength grades within buildings, respectively. Validated against two actual buildings, the method outperforms the widely used simplified analysis method at the urban scale, achieving 85.9% accuracy in predicting damage states across various floors.

Abstract:The intelligent design method based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) represents an emerging structural design paradigm where design rules are not artificially defined but are directly learned from existing design data. GAN-based methods have exhibited promising potential compared to conventional methods in the schematic design phase of reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall structures. However, for the following reasons, it is challenging to apply GAN-based approaches in the industry and to integrate them into the structural design process. (1) The data form of GAN-based methods is heterogeneous from that of the widely used computer-aided design (CAD) methods, and (2) GAN-based methods have high requirements on the hardware and software environment of the user's computer. As a result, this study proposes an integrated schematic design method for RC shear wall structures, providing a workable GAN application strategy. Specifically, (1) a preprocessing method of architectural CAD drawings is proposed to connect the GAN with the upstream architectural design; (2) a user-friendly cloud design platform is built to reduce the requirements of the user's local computer environment; and (3) a heterogeneous data transformation method and a parametric modeling procedure are proposed to automatically establish a structural analysis model based on GAN's design, facilitating downstream detailed design tasks. The proposed method makes it possible for the entire schematic design phase of RC shear wall structures to be intelligent and automated. A case study reveals that the proposed method has a heterogeneous data transformation accuracy of 97.3% and is capable of generating shear wall layout designs similar to the designs of a competent engineer, with 225 times higher efficiency.

Abstract:Seismic isolation can significantly improve the seismic resilience of buildings, resulting in a growing demand for seismic isolation designs. Meanwhile, the deep generative network‐based intelligent design can significantly increase scheme design efficiency. However, the performance of existing intelligent scheme designs is constrained by data quality and quantity. The limited availability of isolation design data hinders the development of intelligent seismic isolation design. Therefore, there is an emerging demand to establish an intelligent scheme design method that is free from data constraints and that can learn the physical mechanism and design rules. Consequently, this study proposes a physics‐rule‐co‐guided self‐supervised generative adversarial network (GAN) that can generate the layout and parameters of seismic isolation bearings by inputting the layout drawings of the shear wall structures. The critical physics‐rule‐co‐guided network model consists of a physics estimator, rule evaluator, discriminator, and design generator. The physics estimator is a deep neural network‐based surrogate model for predicting the mechanical response of an isolated structure, whereas the rule evaluator is a tensor operation‐based loss calculator that considers design rules. Furthermore, the proposed GAN model masters the schematic design ability of the seismic isolation of shear wall structures through multiphase hybrid learning of the pseudo‐labels, physical mechanism, and isolation design rules, obviating the need for ground‐truth data. Case studies also prove the rationality of the method, where the design results can effectively meet the code requirements and reduce the seismic response of the structure.

Abstract:This study explores artificial intelligence (AI) for shear wall layout design, aiming to overcome challenges in data feature sparsity and the complexity of drawing representations in existing AI‐based methods. We pioneer an innovative method leveraging the potential of diffusion models, establishing a suitable drawing representation, and examining the impact of various conditions. The proposed image‐prompt diffusion model incorporating a mask tensor featuring tailored training methods demonstrates superior feature extraction and design effectiveness. A comparative study reveals the advanced capabilities of the Struct‐Diffusion model in capturing engineering designs and optimizing performance metrics such as inter‐story drift ratio (in elastic analysis), offering significant improvements over previous methods and paving the way for future innovations in intelligent designs.

Abstract:Shear wall structures are widely used in high-rise buildings. However, the design process of shear wall structures suffers from inefficiencies. This paper introduces StructDiffusion, an end-to-end intelligent system for shear wall layout generation and analysis. The proposed approach tackles the layout design task by employing a novel diffusion model architecture to generate conditional images. Key components of the proposed method include pretrained diffusion models, ControlNet for conditional control, and LoRA for efficient adaptation. Notably, the method allows for architectural plan images and basic textual design conditions as inputs, enabling manipulation of the generated layouts by adjusting attributes such as building height and seismic intensity. To evaluate the quality of the model's design swiftly, this paper presents a comprehensive evaluation framework that incorporates perceptual and structural validity metrics. Through experimental analyses, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed model in generating layouts, surpassing the capabilities of GAN-based methods. Furthermore, our study investigates model-specific parameter configuration, text-guided capabilities, code compliance, and computational efficiency. StructDiffusion significantly enhances the automation and intelligence of structural engineering workflows. The framework effectively addresses challenges associated with instability, data scarcity, and limitations in assessment. This pioneering application of diffusion models opens up promising avenues for advancing data-driven structural design.

Abstract:Beam and slab design is a critical component of shear wall structure design. Currently, conventional manual design is time-consuming, and defining objective functions and design variables of an optimization design is challenging. In contrast, deep learning methods can learn high-dimensional image features and generate new designs, providing new solutions for efficient and intelligent structural design. Therefore, based on deep neural networks, this study proposes an intelligent layout design method for beams of reinforced concrete shear-wall structures using the input of fused building space and element attributes. This method learned the implicit laws of existing designs and realized the inferential generation of new layout schemes. Subsequently, based on mathematical statistics, methods to determine the type and size of coupling and frame beams are proposed. A typical case study shows that the structural performance of the beam and slab designed by this method was comparable to that of competent engineers. The maximum inter-story drift ratio of the result designed by the proposed method differs from that designed by engineers by no more than 5 x 10(-5). The differences in the maximum vertical typical-floor-slab displacement, the concrete consumption, and the steel consumption between the design result of the proposed method and the engineer's design result are 0.8%, 2.88%, and 6.20%, respectively. Moreover, the design efficiency was significantly improved by more than 30 times.

Abstract:Double-corrugated-plate shear wall (DCPSW), which is composed of two identical corrugated plates and assembled by connecting bolts, is an innovative type of lateral force resistant device for high-rise building structures. In this paper, the shear resistant behavior of the DCPSW is investigated via tests and additional finite element (FE) parametric study. First, the test results of two DCPSW specimens subjected to monotonic in-plane shear loads are reported. Second, FE models are introduced to perform simulations on the shear resistant behavior of the test specimens; it is seen that the numerical results fit well with the test results, and hence the FE models for simulations of the DCPSWs are validated. Then, an additional parametric study is presented by changing the geometrical parameters including aspect ratio, bolt column number, corrugation amplitude and dimensions of boundary elements of the DCPSWs. As a result, the effects of these parameters on the shear resistant behavior of the DCPSWs are further revealed. It is shown that the ultimate shear resistance of the DCPSWs increases with the increase of aspect ratio, bolt column number and corrugation amplitude, yet the dimensions of the boundary elements have little effect on the shear resistance of the embedded corrugated plates. Finally, by analyzing the results of the parametric study, some design remarks are concluded to provide valuable references for the design of the DCPSWs in practice.
Constructing a personalized AI assistant for shear wall layout using Stable Diffusion

Abstract:Shear wall structures are widely used in high-rise residential buildings, and the layout of shear walls requires many years of design experience and iterative trial and error. Currently, there are methods based on heuristic algorithms, but they generate results too slowly. Those based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) or Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) can only generate single arrangements and require large amounts of training data. At present, Stable Diffusion is being widely used, and by using the Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) method to fine-tune large models with small amounts of data, good generative results can be achieved. Therefore, this paper proposes a personalized AI assistant for shear wall layout based on Stable Diffusion, which has been proven to produce good generative results through testing.

Abstract:A direct strut-and-tie model to calculate the ultimate shear strength of structural walls based on an interactive mechanical model (C.Y.Tang et al.) is presented. Two common failure modes, namely, diagonal splitting and concrete crushing, are examined in this paper. Ultimate shear strengths of structural walls are governed by both the transverse tensile stresses perpendicular to the diagonal strut, and the compressive stresses in the diagonal strut. Such proposed model is verified aganist three experimental case studies of structural walls. Generally, predictions by the proposed model are not only accurate and consistent in each case study, but also conservative.
