Abstract:Robotic drilling for aerospace structures demands a high positioning accuracy of the robot, which is usually achieved through error measurement and compensation. In this paper, we report the development of a practical monocular vision system for measurement of the relative error between the drill tool center point（TCP） and the reference hole. First, the principle of relative error measurement with the vision system is explained, followed by a detailed discussion on the hardware components, software components, and system integration. The elliptical contour extraction algorithm is presented for accurate and robust reference hole detection. System calibration is of key importance to the measurement accuracy of a vision system. A new method is proposed for the simultaneous calibration of camera internal parameters and hand-eye relationship with a dedicated calibration board. Extensive measurement experiments have been performed on a robotic drilling system. Experimental results show that the measurement accuracy of the developed vision system is higher than 0.15 mm, which meets the requirement of robotic drilling for aircraft structures.

Abstract:In order to obtain absolute heading angle and position, lunar rover needs the support of autonomous celestial navigation system (CNS). This paper proposes a sun observation based simultaneous celestial positioning and orientation (SCPO) algorithm for the lunar rover under stationary position. Firstly we measure the sun orientation by a sun sensor and the gravity orientation by an inclinometer; secondly combine them with sun ephemeris; finally solve this problem with quaternion estimation (QUEST). By analyzing affects of the sensor's system error (such as the installation errors, bias, etc.) and random noise under stationary conditions, these two types of errors can be eliminated using joint calibration. Executing the SCPO on the moon is demonstrated through simulation. The algorithm is carried out with an experiment on the earth surface, and results demonstrate the high consistency of our simulation.
An Indoor Positioning Framework Based on Panoramic Visual Odometry for Visually Impaired People

Abstract:Positioning is one of the most urgent problems for assisting visually impaired people, especially in indoor environments where GPS signals are weak. In this paper, we present a positioning framework based on panoramic visual odometry for assisting visually impaired people. We introduce a panoramic annular lens to visual odometry and use the Taylor camera model to describe its projection rules. Some critical techniques in visual odometry, including direct image alignment and stereo matching, are extended to fit this camera model. Besides, an easy-to-maintain coordinate alignment method based on multi-pinhole image rectification and marker detection is also proposed to unify the results of visual odometry in the world coordinate system. We evaluate our system on both synthetic and real-world datasets in a comparative set of experiments and compare against state-of-the-art algorithms. The experiment results show that the robustness of positioning has been significantly improved by the proposed visual odometry algorithm with a panoramic annular lens and the system has the ability to provide reliable positioning results in indoor environments.

Abstract:The navigation camera images of Zhurong Rover can be utilized to reconstruct high-resolution 3-D models, which play a vital role in scientific analysis and engineering tasks. Existing studies can effectively obtain individual block 3-D models within localized regions. However, due to the unique operational and environmental conditions of the Mars rovers, it is difficult to provide corresponding points as well as a unified coordinate system for all individual block models. This also results in reconstructed models that cannot be validated and corrected, and it is not possible to stitch multiple individual models together. Fortunately, the inertial measurement unit (IMU) of the Zhurong Rover provides continuous coordinate information along the trajectory. Building upon this, we proposed a rover-oriented model reconstruction (ROMR) method that effectively corrects the drift error of the IMU track. Then, it converts all individual block models, derived from navigation camera images, into a unified coordinate system, ultimately achieving a spatially continuous 3-D model. We validated the ROMR method using the first batch of data from the Zhurong Rover (the first 46 navigation points) and generated a high-resolution 3-D model as well as a precise digital elevation model (DEM) along the trajectory. Within a 10 m radius of the travel path, the average resolution can reach 5 cm/pixel. Subsequently, we analyzed the fine landform texture and weathering effects on the Martian surface, yielding crucial insights to unravel the paleoclimate changes on Mars.

Abstract:Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) plays a crucial role in geodesy and astrometry, and it is also being successfully used in spacecraft tracking. Phase referencing VLBI is a technique that uses phase information rather than the traditional VLBI group time delay to achieve higher measurement accuracy. The newly developed source-frequency phase referencing (SFPR) VLBI has been proven to be a powerful method to eliminate errors, but for positioning purposes, only "core shifts" are left in SFPR. Therefore, in this paper, an in-beam SFPR (IB-SFPR) VLBI method based on SFPR is proposed to overcome the positioning deficiency in SFPR, and to achieve high positioning accuracy. The proposed IB-SFPR method is further researched in more detail and shown to have the ability to achieve high positioning accuracy. For the first Martian rover of China, the IB-SFPR is first applied in its positioning. The positioning results of the rover have shown that the 1σ formal position error is hundreds of meters, with a formal error of post-fitted phase time delay of about 1.3 ps. However, the position discrepancies among the results of IB-SFPR, the guidance, navigation and control system, and the visual localization are at kilometer level, which are mainly affected by the orbit error of the orbiter. Therefore, considering the external reference's (the obiter) orbit error, the final positioning accuracy of the Martian rover is at the kilometer level.

Abstract:As part of the Chinese Tianwen-1 mission, the Zhurong Rover began its scientific investigation in the southern Utopia Planitia after its successful landing in 15 May, 2021. The Zhurong Rover magnetometer (RoMAG), one of the six payloads onboard the rover, includes two identical high-sensitivity triaxial fluxgate magnetometers and can implement mobile magnetic measurements on the surface of Mars. Although a rover magnetic compensation procedure was conducted to remove the magnetic interferences pre-launch, due to the different state of the payloads and electric power system such as the solar panel, an along-track calibration of the magnetometer is necessary to obtain a more accurate Martian magnetic field. Two methods, mast yaw rotations and Rover yaw rotations were utilized separately to determine the Martian horizontal magnetic components. Results show that the Martian horizontal magnetic components determined by the two methods are in good agreement, with the root mean square deviation less than 2.0 nT. The vertical component was also constrained through the pitch movements of the mast by assuming the interferences field distributes like a dipole field. A linear correlation between magnetic field measurements and the solar array currents was derived to calibrate the body field during the regular exploration. We conclude that more accurate measurements could be made when applying the calibration results in the magnetic survey on the surface of Mars.

Abstract:Rocks, prominent features on the surface of Mars, are a primary focus of Mars exploration missions. The accuracy of recognizing rock information, including size and position, deeply affects the path planning for rovers on Mars and the geological exploration of Mars. In this paper, we present a rock measurement method for the Mars surface based on a Rover Attitude and Camera Parameter (RACP). We analyze the imaging process of the Navigation and Terrain Camera (NaTeCam) on the Zhurong rover, which involves utilizing a semi-spherical model (SSM) to characterize the camera's attitude, a projection model (PM) to connect the image data with the three-dimensional (3D) environment, and then estimating the distance and size of rocks. We conduct a test on NaTeCam images and find that the method is effective in measuring the distance and size to Martian rocks and identifying rocks at specific locations. Furthermore, an analysis of the impact of uncertain factors is conducted. The proposed RACP method offers a reliable solution for automatically analyzing the rocks on Mars, which provides a possible solution for the route planning in similar tasks.

Mars Rover Localization Based on A2G Obstacle Distribution Pattern Matching

Abstract:Rover localization is one of the perquisites for large scale rover exploration. In NASA's Mars 2020 mission, the Ingenuity helicopter is carried together with the rover, which is capable of obtaining high-resolution imagery of Mars terrain, and it is possible to perform localization based on aerial-to-ground (A2G) imagery correspondence. However, considering the low-texture nature of the Mars terrain, and large perspective changes between UAV and rover imagery, traditional image matching methods will struggle to obtain valid image correspondence. In this paper we propose a novel pipeline for Mars rover localization. An algorithm combing image-based rock detection and rock distribution pattern matching is used to acquire A2G imagery correspondence, thus establishing the rover position in a UAV-generated ground map. Feasibility of this method is evaluated on sample data from a Mars analogue environment. The proposed method can serve as a reliable assist in future Mars missions.

Abstract:In order to realize position-pose measurement system of monocular camera, a measurement accuracy test system was established. First, we introduce the system principle, theoretical accuracy analysis, computational experiments and computational results. In order to solve the problem of obtaining the true value of high precision pose measurement and the poor accuracy evaluation results caused by accuracy of the simulated motion platform, we proposed single laser tracker with higher accuracy as the method to verify the system accuracy. By establishing the relevant coordinate system and coordinate system conversion, the absolute accuracy of the camera position-pose measurement can be accurately obtained. The result of the 16m measurement accuracy verification experiment shows that, the position measurement accuracy x and y can reach the sub millimeter level. Due to the weak distance perception of monocular camera, the orientation error of z-axis is large, on the order of tens of millimeters. The minimum accuracy of the angle measurement result is 0.2°. Using a single laser tracker for relative measurement to evaluate the accuracy of the measurement system can effectively evaluate the measurement accuracy of the high-precision relative position and attitude measurement system under the limited laboratory conditions.

A novel precise pose prediction algorithm for setting the sleeping mode of the Yutu-2 rover based on a multiview block bundle adjustment

Abstract:Abstract To set the sleeping mode for the Yutu-2 rover, a visual pose prediction algorithm including terrain reconstruction and pose estimation was first studied. The terrain reconstruction precision is affected by using only the stereo navigation camera (Navcam) images and the rotation angles of the mast. However, the hazard camera (Hazcam) pose is fixed, and an image network was constructed by linking all of the Navcam and Hazcam stereoimages. Then, the Navcam pose was refined based on a multiview block bundle adjustment. The experimental results show that the mean absolute errors of the check points in the proposed algorithm were 10.4 mm over the range of $\boldsymbol{L}$ from 2.0 to 6.1 m, and the proposed algorithm achieved good prediction results for the rover pose (the average differences of the values of the pitch angle and the roll angle were −0.19 degrees and 0.29 degrees, respectively). Under the support of the proposed algorithm, engineers have completed the remote setting of the sleeping mode for Yutu-2 successfully in the Chang’e-4 mission operations.

Abstract:The space environment is characterized by unstructured features, sparsity, and poor lighting conditions. The difficulty in extracting features from the visual frontend of traditional SLAM methods results in poor localization and time-consuming issues. This paper proposes a rapid and real-time localization and mapping method for star chart surveyors in unstructured space environments. Improved localization is achieved using multiple sensor fusion to sense the space environment. We replaced the traditional feature extraction module with an enhanced SuperPoint feature extraction network to tackle the challenge of challenging feature extraction in unstructured space environments. By dynamically adjusting detection thresholds, we achieved uniform detection and description of image keypoints, ultimately resulting in robust and accurate feature association information. Furthermore, we minimized redundant information to achieve precise positioning with high efficiency and low power consumption. We established a star surface rover simulation system and created simulated environments resembling Mars and the lunar surface. Compared to the LVI-SAM system, our method achieved a 20% improvement in localization accuracy for lunar scenarios. In Mars scenarios, our method achieved a positioning accuracy of 0.716 m and reduced runtime by 18.682 s for the same tasks. Our approach exhibits higher localization accuracy and lower power consumption in unstructured space environments.

Abstract:As part of China's first Mars exploration mission 'Tianwen-1', the Zhurong rover has successfully touched down on the surface of southern Utopia Planitia on May 15th 2021 and has been conducting surface operations for several months. A multispectral camera (MSCam), as an important payload onboard the Zhurong rover, aims to acquire multispectral images to investigate the morphological characteristics and mineralogic properties of the Martian surface. In this study, a detailed optimization design for the MSCam was carried out to achieve the abovementioned scientific objectives. The MSCam can perform multispectral imaging without chromatic aberration by utilizing eight narrow bandwidth filters made of glass of different thicknesses. Clear images of observation targets at different distances can be obtained by utilizing the six focal plane compensation lenses of varying thicknesses through the rotation of wheels. Calibration experiments, key specification tests and ground verification tests were also conducted in this study. Our results show that the pixel resolution of the MSCam can reach 0.146 mrad, the system static modulation transfer function (MTF) of the MSCam is better than 0.25@525 nm, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is higher than 40 dB, all of which allow clear imaging and accurate multispectral data acquisition of the targets. The high-resolution images obtained by the MSCam will provide detailed geological context for the data interpretation of other payloads on the rover, such as the Mars surface composition detector (MarSCoDe). The mineralogy information of the targets (e.g., fresh rock, dune) indicated by the MSCam multispectral data will also help to constrain the surface material composition of Mars.

GEOMETRIC ACCURACY EVALUATION OF THE ZY-3 STEREO MAPPING SATELLITE FOR 8 YEARS

Abstract:Abstract. The Ziyuan-3 (ZY-3) is the first civil high-resolution optical stereoscopic mapping satellite developed by China. It was launched on January 9, 2012, and as of January 9, 2020, it has been in a continuous operation for 8 years in orbit. The direct geolocation performances of ZY-3 based on the Rational Polynomial Coefficients (RPC) model are discussed, and the monoscopic and stereoscopic geometric accuracy of ZY-3 with ground control point (GCP) have also been studied using a bundle block adjustment with the affine correction in image space. Through the analysis of 47 sets of ZY-3 stereo data in Harbin, China, it can be found that from 2012 to 2019, the ZY-3 geolocation accuracy without GCP remains stable, with an average planimetric accuracy of approximately 16.2m, an average elevation accuracy of about 7.5m. The internal accuracy of the panchromatic triplet images is better than 1.0 pixel, the planimetric accuracy and elevation accuracy of stereo triplets and and stereo pairs are better than 2.0 meters with control points. In general, the results show that the ZY-3 satellite has been in good and stable condition during in-orbit operation in the past 8 years, and the various test indicators have been able to meet the design specifications.

Abstract:ZiYuan-3 (ZY-3) surveying satellite is China's first civilian high-resolution stereo mapping satellite. The satellite's objective is oriented towards plotting 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 topographic maps. Compared with plotting using foreign commercial mapping satellite imagery, establishment of the image geometry model is the core technical problem for different products and various applications of ZY-3 surveying satellite. This article analyses key problems of high-precision geometry processing based on the overall design, and proposes ZY-3 surveying satellite image geometry model with the technology of virtual CCD line-array imaging. In addition, this article utilises the first orbit imagery of ZY-3 satellite with coverage of Dalian region in Liaoning Province, and produces forward, backward and nadir camera calibrated products. Different ground control points are selected for the block adjustment experiment and the digital surface model (DSM), digital ortho-map (DOM) are generated. The accuracy is validated by check points. The experiment reveals that the planar accuracy of DOM and vertical accuracy of DSM are better than 3 m and 2 m, respectively. The experiment demonstrates the effectiveness of ZY-3 surveying satellite image geometry model.
A study of high-precision stereo positioning with multi-scene and multi-mode GF-3 satellite images

Abstract:Due to factors that include systematic sensor delay, it is difficult for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite stereo positioning to meet the requirements of large-scale mapping. In traditional stereo positioning methods, ground control points (GCP) are required to eliminate errors. In this study, a method is proposed to improve the stereo positioning accuracy without GCP. First, the factors influencing the Gaofen-3 (GF-3) satellite stereo positioning accuracy were analysed. The errors were divided into systematic fixed errors, spatial and temporal variation errors, and random errors. Subsequently, a systematic geometric error compensation model and a stereo adjustment model were constructed, and a method to improve the multiscene and multimode stereo positioning accuracy without GCP was proposed. Finally, the effects of different intersection angles on the accuracy of stereo positioning were compared and analysed, and the optimal intersection angle of the SAR satellite was quantitatively analysed. The effectiveness and accuracy of this method were verified using GF-3 high-resolution image data. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can improve the SAR satellite stereo positioning accuracy. The plane positioning accuracy improved by 95.1%, and the elevation positioning accuracy improved by 97.9%. In general, the plane and elevation positioning accuracies of the GF-3 satellite were better than 3 m and 2 m, respectively. The stereo-positioning accuracy of the SAR satellite was the best and most stable when the intersection angle was between 40° and 50°.

Precision Instrument Targeting via Image Registration for the Mars 2020 Rover

Abstract:A key component of Mars exploration is the operation of robotic instruments on the surface, such as those on board the Mars Exploration Rovers, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), and the planned Mars 2020 Rover. As the instruments carried by these rovers have become more advanced, the area targeted by some instruments becomes smaller, revealing more fine-grained details about the geology and chemistry of rocks on the surface. However, thermal fluctuations, rover settling or slipping, and inherent inaccuracies in pointing mechanisms all lead to pointing error that is on the order of the target size (several millimeters) or larger. We show that given a target located on a previously acquired image, the rover can align this with a new image to visually locate the target and refine the current pointing. Due to round-trip communication constraints, this visual targeting must be done efficiently on board the rover using relatively limited computing hardware. We employ existing ORB features for landmark-based image registration, describe and theoretically justify a novel approach to filtering false landmark matches, and employ a random forest classifier to automatically reject failed alignments. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach using over 3,800 images acquired by Remote Micro-Imager on board the "Curiosity" rover.

Abstract:In virtual reality devices, positioning virtual information onto the real‐world scene accurately has always been a challenge. Such performance feature has been widely requiring high precision in vehicle HUD navigation, AR surgery, industrial production assembly and maintenance, and so on. For applications such as surgical use and assembly in the industry, positioning accuracy is essential to evaluate and measure. The accuracy of virtual image positioning depends on the imaging lens, the combiner optics, eye position, etc., and showing the individual parameters of each component is often not adequate to demonstrate the actual performance of the product. As such, the measurement that simulates the human eye under actual product use conditions is crucial for achieving accurate measurement. In this paper, we use a high‐angular resolution 2D imaging luminance meter that mimics the optics of the human eye, together with a two‐axis goniometer, to achieve precise measurement of positioning accuracy. This paper further analyzes the positioning accuracy based on the measurements around both the eye pupil center and eyeball rotation center. In addition, the effects of the applications of the positioning uncertainty were studied.

Abstract:The precise attitude determination and imagery positioning is crucial for remote sensing satellites to accomplish diverse observation missions. However, the complex fluctuations of environmental conditions result in severe and time-variant camera misalignment, which degrades the inertial attitude determination precision of optical payloads greatly and further hinders the improvement of positioning accuracy. Here, we develop a high-accuracy real-time attitude determination and imagery positioning system. With multiple laser sources integrated on the camera focal plane and a retroreflector reflecting the laser into a star tracker, the active optical monitoring path between the camera and the star tracker is constructed and provides the ability to monitor the camera misalignment. Using a dichroic mirror, the star tracker can detect the stars and the laser simultaneously. Then, the camera attitude determination and imagery positioning model based on the “star–laser” joint detection is established, which can precisely monitor the camera misalignment by the laser imaging and determine the inertial camera attitude combined with the star imaging. The ground simulation experiment is conducted and the results demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method in monitoring the camera misalignment. Therefore, the proposed method provides an innovative idea for high-accuracy positioning.
A reflectance calibration method for Multispectral Camera (MSCam) on the Zhurong rover

Abstract:The Multispectral Camera (MSCam) onboard the Zhurong rover, collecting eight band images in the visible and near-infrared wavelengths, aims to investigate the morphological characteristics and mineralogic properties of the Martian surface. Due to the perturbation of Martian atmosphere, accurate reflectance calibration for the MSCam data is crucial for the further spectral interpretation. Here, we proposed a reflectance calibration method to convert the MSCam radiance to reflectance factor using the MSCam calibration target. This study begins with the laboratory multi-angle measurements to characterize the photometric properties of the MSCam calibration target. Based on these photometric characteristics, a reflectance model consisting of a directional reflection term and a specular reflection term is developed. The constructed reflectance model achieves a high precision, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) between the modeled and measured reflectance factor are 99.3% in all cases. We then applied this reflectance model to the in-flight observations to derive the reflectance of the Martian surface. The validations indicate that the in-flight derived reflectance factors of the calibration target are consistent with the laboratory measurements, and the derived reflectance spectra of the Martian surface are comparable to the spectra captured by the other mission.

Abstract:The determination of reference points for telescopes is crucial for obtaining the local‐tie vector for a multi‐technology co‐located station. Traditional methods suffer from labor‐intensive fieldwork, long execution cycles, and systematic errors due to the incident angle of the total station's laser beam on the prism. In this paper, we propose an algorithm aligning the prism pointing vector with the prism‐to‐total station vector and introduce a pan‐tilt platform and the Tianma VGOS telescope for sub‐millimeter unmanned reference point monitoring. Our results show that the prototype system based on the pan‐tilt achieves a formal error of ±100 μm (1σ) in reference point positions with just 2.5 hr of automated monitoring. The consistency of reference point positions is comparable to the local control network accuracy. Single‐direction observations may introduce a deviation of ±1 mm in the reference point compared to multiple direction observations. Preliminary experiments on the Tianma VGOS telescope have also shown that this system can efficiently automate the monitoring of prism scatter points (one measurement every minute) and achieve sub‐millimeter horizontal precision in reference point positions within a single day.
