Abstract:Combustion characteristics of bio-oil from sewage sludge were investigated using thermogravimetry (TG) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. The combustion process could be divided into two weight loss stages. Light compounds volatilized and were oxidized in the first stage and the heterogeneous combustion between oxygen and heavy compounds happened in the second stage, which were confirmed by FT-IR technique. Most weight loss occurred in the first stage. The effect of heating rate was also studied and higher heating rates were found to facilitate the combustion process. The kinetic parameters of the two stages were calculated and the change of activation energy indicated higher heating rates benefited combustion.
Laminar Burning Characteristics of Upgraded Biomass Pyrolysis Fuel Derived from Rice Husk at Elevated Pressures and Temperatures

Abstract:Biomass energy is an emerging alternative energy source with an attractive carbon balance in its life cycle. Recently, a biomass fast pyrolysis fuel was produced from rice husk, and it was further upgraded using supercritical ethanol with a 5%Pt/SO42−/ZrO2/SBA-15 catalyst in a hydrogen atmosphere. This upgraded biomass pyrolysis fuel is mainly composed of ethers, esters, alcohols and ketones. After analysing the composition of this upgraded biomass pyrolysis fuel, the authors reproduced a mixed fuel to mimic the upgraded biomass pyrolysis fuel. This mixed fuel contained ethanol, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether, acetone, and 2-butanone, with mass ratios of 9:6:2:1:1. This fuel has been used in a gasoline engine with some minor modifications; however, there is no data available for its laminar burning characteristics. In this study, the laminar burning characteristics of this mixed fuel were investigated in a constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC) at an initial pressure of 0.1MPa and initial temperatures of 358, 388 and 418K), and at an initial temperature of 358K and initial pressures of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4MPa. By using a Schlieren high-speed imaging technique and a linear extrapolation method, laminar burning characteristics including the unstretched flame propagation speed, laminar burning velocity and other key parameters were calculated and discussed. Experiments were also conducted for two main components, ethanol and ethyl acetate, and results were used as benchmarks. The results indicated that the peak laminar burning velocity of the mixed fuel can be observed near the equivalence ratio of 1.1 under the tested conditions. At the same equivalence ratio, the laminar burning velocity was increased as initial temperature was increased, and it was decreased as initial pressure was increased. Markstein length decreased as equivalence ratio was increased, and it dropped below zero when the equivalence ratio was 1.4, indicating increased flame instability with equivalence ratio increased. Among the three examined fuels, the laminar burning velocity ranking was: ethanol>mixed fuel>ethyl acetate.

Abstract:Bio-oil is a promising fuel as one of the main products from biomass fast pyrolysis for improving energy density and reducing transportation cost, but high acidity and low calorific value limit its direct application. It can be used to prepare coal bio-oil slurry as partial green fuels for potential feeds for synthesis gas production via gasification with the advantages over traditional coal-water slurries of calorific values and being additives-free. In the present work, three bio-oils were blended with lignite to prepare slurry fuels for the investigation of the effect of bio-oil species on rheological behaviors and gasification characteristics of coal bio-oil slurry fuels. Results show that slurry prepared with bio-oil from fruit tree pyrolysis is highly viscous and has higher activation energy in gasification. Slurries prepared with bio-oils from straw pyrolysis and pyroligneous acid from wood pyrolysis exhibited an acceptably lower viscosity, and the gasification temperatures were lower than for coal. The activation energy decreased by 15.98 KJ/mol and 2.77 KJ/mol, respectively, which indicates these bio-oils are more suitable with lignite for slurries preparation.

Abstract:In this paper, thermogravimetric-infrared spectroscopy was used to analyze co-pyrolysis of oily sludge (OS) from oil penetration and rice husks (RH) at various ratios (1:0; 3:1; 1:1; 1:3; 0:1), obtaining pyrolysis weight-loss behaviors, the laws of mutual synergy, and gas volatilization characteristics. The Coats-redfern and response surface method were employed to analyze kinetics and optimize pyrolysis, respectively. The T i , T max , and T f increase as the heating rate increases, and the weight loss increases in the second stage. With the increase of the proportion of RH, the T i and T max of the mixture increase, while the T f and residual content decrease. The co-pyrolysis of the OS and RH has synergistic effects. The addition of RH is beneficial to reduce the E of OS pyrolysis. The mixing ratio affects the strength of small-molecular-gases volatilization. When the RH ratio is 58.9% at 10K/min, the minimum predicted E and residual amount of co-pyrolysis are 58.602 kJ/mol and 42.6%, respectively.

Abstract:The utilization of biomass resources could optimize the energy consumption structure and achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Torrefaction and densification pretreatment could improve the defects of high oxygen content, low energy density, and low bulk density of biomass. In this work, high-density and hardness pellets were prepared by torrefaction coupling densification (in-situ torrefaction-densification without binders). In-situ torrefaction-densification significantly reduced the pressure required for the densification process. In-situ torrefaction-densification lowered the pressure required to prepare RH pellets with a bulk density of 1000 kg/m3 from 88.23 MPa to 30.95 MPa. The effects of the in-situ torrefaction-densification method and pelletizing pressure on the pellet combustion process were investigated by non-isothermal and isothermal combustion. The volatile and carbon of TCDP could be burned intensively during combustion, and the emissions of CO and CxHy were reduced during combustion. The original structural strength of TCDP was still maintained in the combustion process. The alkali metal K in TCDP was difficult to escape, effectively reducing the emission of K in the flue gas. In-situ torrefaction-densification could not only improve the quality of biomass solid fuel but also facilitate the storage and transportation of biomass solid fuel.

Abstract:Pyrolysis is potentially an effective treatment of waste oil residues for recovery of petroleum hydrocarbons, and the addition of biomass is expected to improve its dewatering and pyrolysis behavior. In this study, the dewatering and low-temperature co-pyrolysis of oil-containing sludge in the presence of various agricultural biomasses, such as rice husk, walnut shell, sawdust, and apricot shell, were explored. As a result, the water content gradually decreases with the increase of biomass addition within 0-1.0 wt % in original oily sludge. Comparatively, the dewatering efficiency of sludge in the presence of four types of biomasses follows the order of apricot shell > walnut shell > rice husk > sawdust. On the other hand, rice husk and sawdust are relatively more efficient in the recovery of petroleum hydrocarbons compared with walnut shell and apricot shell. The recovery efficiency generally increased with the increase in the biomass content in the range of 0-0.2 wt %, then exhibited a gradually decreasing trend with the increase in the biomass content from 0.2 to 1.0 wt %. The results suggest that optimum amount of biomass plays an important role in the recovery efficiency. In addition, the addition of biomass (such as rice husk) also promotes the formation of CxHy and CO, increasing the calorific value of pyrolysis residue, and controlled the pollution components of the exhaust gas discharged from residue incineration. The present work implies that biomass as addictive holds great potential in the industrial dewatering and pyrolysis of oil-containing sludge.

In-depth Study of Synergism Between Torrefaction and Catalyst for Balanced Production of Bio-Oil from Rice Husk Pyrolysis Based on Hydrocarbons Production, Energy Yield and Deoxygenation Degree

Abstract:Previous studies concerning biomass to bio-oil mainly focused on hydrocarbons production, and how to balance the bio-oil production in terms of hydrocarbons production, energy yield and deoxygenation degree is a challenging issue. After the pretreatment of torrefaction, catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) was performed at two-zone fixed-bed reactor. The synergism between torrefaction and catalyst during torrefaction-catalytic fast pyrolysis (T-CFP) was investigated for the balanced production of bio-oil from rice husk. Firstly, the results of two catalysts (ZrO2/n-ZSM-5 and ZrO2/n-ZSM-5/attapulgite) indicated that the catalyst with the incorporation of attapulgite (ATP) could realize the balance between the acid and basic sites, which resulted in deeper deoxygenation. Then, the results of torrefaction-catalytic pyrolysis showed that, among three torrefaction temperatures adopted, mild torrefaction (210 degrees C) had better synergistic effects with both catalysts. Specifically, catalytic pyrolysis of biomass after mild torrefaction over both catalysts realized the enhancement of deoxygenation degree and energy yield. Moreover, with the pretreatment of mild torrefaction, the performance of ZrO2/n-ZSM-5/ATP turned out to be obviously superior to ZrO2/n-ZSM-5 in terms of hydrocarbons production (7.5% > 0.8%) and deoxygenation mode. Therefore, the combination of ZrO2/n-ZSM-5/ATP and mild torrefaction could achieve more balanced production of bio-oil from T-CFP process.
Properties of Bio-oil from Fast Pyrolysis of Rice Husk

Abstract:Physicochemical properties of bio-oil obtained from fast pyrolysis of rice husk were studied in the present work. Molecular distillation was used to separate the crude bio-oil into three fractions viz. light fraction, middle fraction and heavy fraction. Their chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The thermal behavior, including evaporation and decomposition, was investigated using thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (TG-FTIR). The product distribution was significantly affected by contents of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The bio-oil yield was 46.36% (by mass) and the yield of gaseous products was 27% (by mass). The chemicals in the bio-oil included acids, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, phenols, sugars, etc. The light fraction was mainly composed of acids and compounds with lower boiling point temperature, the middle and heavy fractions were consisted of phenols and levoglucosan. The thermal stability of the bio-oil was determined by the interactions and intersolubility of compounds. It was found that the thermal stability of bio-oil was better than the light fraction, but worse than the middle and heavy fractions.

Abstract:Abstract Under the pressure of environmental problems and fossil energy shortage, countries all over the world are looking for fuel to replace fossil energy. Oil shale and rice husk are potential fuels, but they both have some problems, such as high ash content and low calorific value .In the present study,oil shale and rice husk were used as feedstock for the high quality fuel through hydrothermal approach,it provides a new way for the resource utilization of oil shale and rice.Thermogravimetric method was used to analyze the functional groups change and thermal transformation characteristics of mixed hydrochars prepared for oil shale(OS) and rice husk(RH) at different hydrothermal temperatures(150,200 and 250°C), including combustion and pyrolysis processes, and analyze the synergistic effects. Results showed that the co-hydrocharsization pretreatment had a significant effect on the thermal transformation behavior of oil shale and rice husk.On the one hand, the mixture of hydrocar has higher volatile content than its calculated value.On the other hand,a synergistic effect(promoting combustion and pyrolysis behavior) was found in both combustion and pyrolysis processes, and this effect was the most obvious when the hydrothermal temperature was around 200°C,and the characteristic peak of functional groups vibration was strong.Since the synergistic effect of pyrolysis process is lower than that of combustion process, co-hydrocharsation products are considered to be more suitable for combustion.These findings have positive significance of energy generation and utilization of organic waste by the combination of co-hydrocharsization modification and subsequent thermochemical process.

Abstract:The amount of industrial sludge (IS) produced in the treatment of industrial wastewater is significant, with high water and ash content, and low calorific value. However, the recovery of energy from IS can be improved through the coordinative processing with biomass. In this study, we explored the comprehensive pyrolysis characteristics of IS, rice straw (RS), and the synergistic effects of blending and pelletization. Additionally, this study investigated the pyrolysis kinetic behavior of IS-RS pellets for the first time. Our findings suggest that both blending and pelletization treatments improved heat and mass transfer characteristics. Pelletization treatment also promotes low-temperature pyrolysis, torrefaction (<553 K), over direct blending. Blending and pelletization contribute to the release of gaseous products at a lower temperature, which improved the inner passage of pellets, leading to CO 2 reduction. Pelletization also hindered the emission of N and S-related gases, while blending facilitated the release of NO at a high heating rate. Moreover, our study found that direct blending treatment had no significant effect on pyrolysis activation energy ( E a ) based on Friedman model-free estimation. The first stage of pellet feedstock had an E a value of 115.05 kJ/mol, while the second stage had an E a value of 226.50 kJ/mol. Lastly, we applied the compensation effect method to investigate pre-exponential factor ln A ( α ), and mechanism values ( f ( α )) were also estimated, along with the list of compensating parameter functions. Our finding could be helpful in the design of sludge thermal treatment.

Abstract:Process parameters play a crucial role in governing the physical and chemical properties of biochar. An optimization tool, response surface methodology (central composite design) was employed to identify the linear and interaction effects of process parameters (temperature, heating rate and time) on selected responses, namely biochar yield, higher heating value, energy density and energy yield of biochar. The optimized values for temperature, heating rate and time were found to be 432 °C, 4 °C/min and 40 min respectively. At these optimized conditions, the biochar yield, higher heating value, energy density and energy yield of biochar were found to be 54.65%, 25.08 MJ/kg, 1.46 and 79.66% respectively. The fuel ratio of optimized biochar was found to be 2.10 which is near to that of bituminous coal having fuel ratio in range of 1.5 to 2.0. This study performs an in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis of the synthesized biochar so as to ensure higher yield and improved quality of solid fuel for possible practical utility. The thermal conversion of biomass can therefore be a potential route to provide an economically viable, clean and environment friendly source of good quality solid fuel through utilization of biomass or biomass-derived waste.

Abstract:Co-pyrolysis of low-rank coal and rice stalk is an important way to achieve hierarchical and efficient utilization of energy. This work explored how blend ratios (0–100 wt%) and temperatures (773–1073 K) affect pyrolysis product distribution and characteristics. The results showed that a higher rice straw ratio (80 wt%) significantly reduced the yield of char (22.38–26.9 wt%) compared with 20 wt% of rice straw at different temperatures. The yield and physicochemical properties of target products were closely related to process parameters, which can provide a promising opportunity to acquire desired products by reaction conditions optimization. Co-pyrolysis was able to inhibit the production of large aromatic ring structures in char. High temperature promoted the generation of cross-linked structures, which was influenced by the blend ratio. The synergistic effects of BET surface area and pore volume were most pronounced when the J content was 40 wt% at 873 K, and their increments were 59.6 m2/g and 0.027 cm3/g, respectively. For the char derived from lower rice straw proportions (0, 20, and 40 wt%), the main combustion range and the maximum combustion rate temperature showed a progressive shift towards higher values with temperature increasing. The research is valuable of guiding high-value utilization of agricultural residues and energy transitions.

Abstract:Pyrolysis experiment with sawdust, rice husk, cornstalk and cotton stalk shows that the yields of bio-oil of these feedstock are 63%, 53%, 57% and 56% respectively, and the caloric value of different bio-oil are all 17-18MJ/kg. Bio-oil is a complicated mixture of organic compounds with water containing almost all kinds of organic compounds such as aether, ester, aldehyde, ketone, hydroxybenzene, alcoholic, organic acid and etc. The research also shows that bio-oil viscosity will be increased with temperature increasing when temperature is below 85°C, and otherwise will be decreased with temperature when temperature is above 85°C, which implies that bio-oil will be polymerized when its temperature is more than 85°C.

Abstract:Aiming at the low oil yield of oil shale, and the high content of oxygen in biomass pyrolysis oil, the co-pyrolysis of oil shale and peanut shell were studied by thermogravimetric analyzer and fixed bed reactor. Based on the co-pyrolysis characteristics, kinetic and oil phase products analysis, a series of co-pyrolysis interaction mechanism has been proposed. The co-pyrolysis caused the earlier decomposition of oil shale and higher conversion rate of blended feedstock. The contribution of co-pyrolysis to the total conversion and oil phase products yield was most significant with biomass blending ratio of 50 %, while the contribution to the activation energy and the generation of aliphatic hydrocarbons was most significant when the ratio was 25 %. The co-pyrolysis interaction at low-temperature (160–400 °C) is dominated by oil shale radicals promoting biomass bond breaking and the minerals catalysis on biomass decomposition. For high-temperature (400–600 °C), it is dominated by biomass alkali/alkaline earth metals which catalyze oil shale decomposition. The interaction promotes the formation of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons in the oil, reduces the average carbon chain length and increases the light oil content.

Abstract:Photo-thermal (PT) pyrolysis has emerged as a promising technique for efficiently converting biomass into high-quality bio-oil. The pyrolysis characteristics of rice straw (RS) and rapeseed cake (RC) were analyzed using a photo-thermal reactor with heating rates of 20, 200 and 500 °C/min and compared with 20 °C/min fixed-bed (FB) pyrolysis at 750 °C. Due to the uneven temperature distribution caused by its limited heating area, fast PT heating significantly increased the presence of high molecular weight components (>650) in the bio-oil. PT pyrolysis of RS exhibited higher phenolic contents compared to FB pyrolysis, whereas RC oil showed enhanced decomposition of fatty acids through ketonization. In terms of N-compounds, PT slow pyrolysis oil contained more nitriles but fewer linear amines/amides than FB, while more cyclic amides were formed under fast PT pyrolysis. Furthermore, the analysis of heavy components revealed that more aromatic compounds with low H/C ratios were produced in fast PT pyrolysis oil. Overall, PT heating exerted dual effects by reducing secondary reactions and synergistically enhancing inner-particle reactions with fast heating. This study provides valuable insights into the mechanism of bio-oil evolution under PT pyrolysis.

Effects of interactions between organic solid waste components on the formation of heavy components in oil during pyrolysis

Abstract:This study focused on the interaction between organic solid waste (OSW) components on the formation and chemical composition of heavy components (>150 m/z) in OSW-oil. Rice husk (RH) and polypropylene (PP) as typical biomass and plastic fractions in OSW, were co-pyrolyzed at different blend ratios and different temperatures. The heavy components were characterized by FT-ICR MS, UV-F and GC MS. The results indicated that the yield of heavy components in PP-oil was higher than in RH-oil under the same temperature. Heavy hydrocarbons were found in PP-oil, while heavy phenols and heavy lipids existed in RH-oil. Significant interactions occurred at high temperatures (>600 °C). The interactions promoted the heavy components in all the blend-oils, corresponding to an increase of 20–35% compared to the calculated value of the content in PP-oil and RH-oil. At low PP ratio (25PP + 75RH), PP provided hydrogen to the reactive O-containing species in RH, leading to promoted heavy phenols and heavy lipids. At high PP ratio (50PP + 50RH and 75PP + 25RH), large aromatics (>3 rings) increased of 48–111% with respect to the calculated values. Plenty of PP‑hydrogen and a rich oxygen environment provided by RH radicals enhanced the formation of heavy aromatics and heavy PAH.

Abstract:Waste residues produced by agricultural and forestry industries can generate energy and are regarded as a promising source of sustainable fuels. Pyrolysis, where waste biomass is heated under low-oxygen conditions, has recently attracted attention as a means to add value to these residues. The material is carbonized and yields a solid product known as biochar. In this study, eight types of biomass were evaluated for their suitability as raw material to produce biochar. Material was pyrolyzed at either 350 °C or 500 °C and changes in ash content, volatile solids, fixed carbon, higher heating value (HHV) and yield were assessed. For pyrolysis at 350 °C, significant correlations (p < 0.01) between the biochars’ ash and fixed carbon content and their HHVs were observed. Masson pine wood and Chinese fir wood biochars pyrolyzed at 350 °C and the bamboo sawdust biochar pyrolyzed at 500 °C were suitable for direct use in fuel applications, as reflected by their higher HHVs, higher energy density, greater fixed carbon and lower ash contents. Rice straw was a poor substrate as the resultant biochar contained less than 60% fixed carbon and a relatively low HHV. Of the suitable residues, carbonization via pyrolysis is a promising technology to add value to pecan shells and Miscanthus.

Abstract:Co-pyrolysis of biomass components (cellulose, xylan and lignin) and polyethylene (PE) was performed based on simplex-lattice mixture design, and the thermal decomposition behaviors, kinetics, and bio-oil compositions were investigated. The results showed that PE could promote the reduction of residual chars for co-pyrolysis of single biomass component and PE, and the variation of blending ratios resulted in the different interactions for co-pyrolysis of two biomass components and PE. When PE ratio was low, co-pyrolysis of any two biomass components could reduce the reaction order, and only in the presence of lignin, the interaction between cellulose and PE was significant in case of reaction order. The interactions between any biomass component and PE were all significant in affecting activation energy. In terms of reducing reaction activation energy, the interaction induced by xylan was stronger than that induced by lignin, and the synergy of cellulose was the weakest. The integration of organic products between cellulose and PE and between xylan and PE was limited, but obvious integration of lignin and PE -derived products was observed. During co-pyrolysis, lignin intermediates could be quenched to stable products, attributing to the effective hydrogen transfer and interactions between PE-derived radicals and lignin intermediates.

Abstract:The vapor-/solid-phase interactions are the inevitable phenomenon in biomass pyrolysis process, which significantly affects the formation of heavy components (molecular weight > 200 Da) in bio-oil (HCO). In this study, to deeply understand the mechanism of the formation of HCO during biomass pyrolysis, the effects of the vapor-/solid-phase interactions among cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin (biomass three components) on the formation of HCO during pyrolysis were studied in a fixed-bed reactor system. The HCO were analyzed by the FT-ICR MS spectrometer and the UV-F spectrometer. The results showed that the vapor-phase interactions mainly promoted the formation of heavy phenolic compounds at a slow heating rate, and the total content of HCO was increased. The vapor-phase interactions decreased the total content and the O content of HCO obviously at a fast heating rate; meanwhile, the highly reactive compounds (e.g., furans, acids, and ketones) generated from the pyrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose could interact with the phenol monomers. Thus the phenolic compounds were transformed into large aromatic compounds via the vapor-phase interactions. The solid-phase interactions facilitated the transformation of O-containing structures of the HCO into the char via cross-condensation reaction, decreasing the yield of HCO, especially the phenolic compounds and the saccharides.
