Abstract:Evaluation of the outdoor thermal comfort and comprehension of the impact of urban morphology are essential for assessing heat-related risks and implementing urban planning strategies that enhance the resilience of urban populations to extreme heat events. However, the challenge lies in achieving city-wide thermal comfort mapping at high spatial and temporal resolutions, which requires consideration of the complex urban morphology (urban geometry and land cover) at a microscale, as well as the background meteorological factors at larger scale. Here, we introduce an effective framework for city-scale thermal comfort mapping at high spatial-temporal resolution that integrates WRF-UCM and SOLWEIG model, aiming to achieve fine-grained thermal comfort mapping at the city scale and to explore the impact of urban morphology on these thermal conditions. In the proposed framework, we employ the WRF-UCM model (The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the urban canopy model) to establish the background meteorological condition at local-scale (500m resolution). Additionally, we utilize the SOLWEIG (Solar and Longwave Environmental Irradiance Geometry) model for the simulation of mean radiant temperature at a finer micro-scale (10m resolution), a critical determinant of thermal comfort. These simulations are performed using detailed 3D urban morphological data and land cover information. Subsequently, the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) is calculated on hourly basis, integrating the aforementioned factors. A case study conducted for a Chinese city with a population of 15 million demonstrates a significant correction between the rise in the UTCI during daytime and an increase in impervious surface area, evidenced by a maximum correlation coefficient of 0.80. Furthermore, our findings emphasize the significance of tree canopy coverage in mitigating heat, demonstrating that an implementation of 40% tree cover could diminish daytime UTCI by approximately 1.5 to 2.0 ºC. This methodological framework is not only instrumental in assessing heat-related risks and human thermal discomfort within intricate urban environments but also offers pivotal insights for the adoption of climate-resilient urban planning strategies.

Abstract:In the face of an increasing number of urban climate modelling studies performed at sub‐kilometre resolution, systematic investigations of the performance of high‐resolution urban climate simulations and their dependency on spatial resolution are still very sparse. This study investigates the impact of the scale of representation of the urban area on the urban climate simulation with a multi‐layer urban canopy model integrated in a mesoscale numerical weather prediction model for different sub‐kilometre resolutions. The potential of using such a model system for representing the intra‐urban climate variability is explored. The weather and climate model CCLM, coupled with the multi‐layer urban canopy model DCEP (CCLM‐DCEP), was used at increasing resolution from 1 km to 250 m grid spacing to simulate the pronounced heat wave event of June‐July 2015 over the city of Zurich, Switzerland. Air temperature and wind speed measurements from a network of urban stations as well as surface temperatures from Landsat 7 imagery have been used to evaluate the model results.CCLM‐DCEP showed good performance against observed air temperature, surface temperature and wind speed in the urban area. The model performance did not change significantly with model resolution and a performance improvement with model resolution was not found.Small‐scale features such as urban parks and large railway areas started to be resolved at sub‐kilometre grid spacing. At the finest model resolution (250 m), a spatial variability in air temperature of up to 2 K and wind speed of up to 1.5 m s‐1 was found within the grid cell of the coarsest resolution grid (1 km).CCLM‐DCEP showed the potential to represent the urban climate at the neighbourhood scale when used at high (sub‐kilometre) resolution, which is needed to support applications such as urban planning, building energy use and urban air quality.

Abstract:The availability of high spatio-temporal resolution of urban air temperature is paramount for understanding urban heat island (UHI) and developing effective mitigation strategies, in particular for local-scale mitigations. Obtaining high spatial resolution of air temperature at city-scale is challenging as the quantity of weather stations is often limited in cities, particularly in those less developed ones. In this study, based on the existing weather station network in Guangzhou city, China, we compare eight different air temperature predictive models and select one with the best performance to interpolate city-scale air temperature. The training and validation of the models are performed using observatory meteorological data of 321 weather stations in Guangzhou. Deep learning-derived land cover information and social-economic data are encoded to be used as explanatory variables. The regression kriging combined with multiple linear regression is found to result in the best performance, with an average root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.92 degrees C and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.959. Furthermore, the quantities and locations of current weather stations can be optimized by the proposed model. Guided by the k-means clustering alongside the information of geocoordinates and land cover, the number of current weather stations in Guangzhou can be reduced by 50% (i.e., 160 weather stations) while retaining the model performance. This study proposes and demonstrates an effective model for obtaining city-scale air temperature at high spatio-temporal resolution with data from sparse weather stations, which is much needed for cities which want to enhance their city-scale air temperature mapping by complementing new weather stations to their existing weather station network.

Abstract:Climate data matching the scales at which organisms experience climatic conditions are often missing. Yet, such data on microclimatic conditions are required to better understand climate change impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Here we combine a network of microclimate temperature measurements across different habitats and vertical heights with a novel radiative transfer model to map daily temperatures during the vegetation period at 10 m spatial resolution across Switzerland. Our results reveal strong horizontal and vertical variability in microclimate temperature, particularly for maximum temperatures at 5 cm above the ground and within the topsoil. Compared to macroclimate conditions as measured by weather stations outside forests, diurnal air and topsoil temperature ranges inside forests were reduced by up to 3.0 and 7.8 ∘ C, respectively, while below trees outside forests, e.g. in hedges and below solitary trees, this buffering effect was 1.8 and 7.2 ∘ C, respectively. We also found that, in open grasslands, maximum temperatures at 5 cm above ground are, on average, 3.4 ∘ C warmer than those of the macroclimate, suggesting that, in such habitats, heat exposure close to the ground is often underestimated when using macroclimatic data. Spatial interpolation was achieved by using a hybrid approach based on linear mixed-effect models with input from detailed radiation estimates from radiative transfer models that account for topographic and vegetation shading, as well as other predictor variables related to the macroclimate, topography, and vegetation height. After accounting for macroclimate effects, microclimate patterns were primarily driven by radiation, with particularly strong effects on maximum temperatures. Results from spatial block cross-validation revealed predictive accuracies as measured by root mean squared errors ranging from 1.18 to 3.43 ∘ C, with minimum temperatures being predicted more accurately overall than maximum temperatures. The microclimate-mapping methodology presented here enables a biologically relevant perspective when analysing climate–species interactions, which is expected to lead to a better understanding of biotic and ecosystem responses to climate and land use change.

Abstract:The capability to evaluate city-scale outdoor thermal comfort is crucial for understanding the public's experience of heat stress, especially during heat waves. Nevertheless, there remains a methodological gap in accurately mapping thermal comfort with high spatial and temporal resolutions in complex urban environment and in quantifying the contributions of various urban climate drivers, such as sky view factors and tree canopy fraction. To bridge this gap, we propose an innovative WRF-UCM-SOLWEIG framework that couples a mesoscale model with an urban microclimate model. Specifically, it integrates the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the urban canopy model (WRF-UCM) and the Solar and Longwave Environmental Irradiance Geometry model (SOLWEIG). This framework is then applied to a densely populated tropical city in China, to quantify the impact of urban climate drivers on the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). The results reveal a significant diurnal variation in the impact of urban morphology. Notably, the most significant drivers affecting daytime UTCI are the impervious surface fraction and the tree canopy fraction, with maximum Pearson's correlation coefficients of 0.80 and -0.70, respectively. These findings suggest that urban heat mitigation strategies should prioritize on reducing impervious surfaces and enhancing shade management, alongside expanding urban forestry measures.

Abstract:Knowledge about changes in ground temperatures under a changing climate is important for many environmental, economic, and infrastructure applications and can be estimated by transient numerical simulations. However, a full annual cycle of precipitation data is needed to achieve this, yet is often unavailable in high alpine regions where a lack of infrastructure precludes installation of heated instruments capable of measuring the solid precipitation component. This paper presents a method to reconstruct a full year precipitation dataset at high alpine weather stations, which is then used to model ground temperature and snow depth for 16 alpine sites in Switzerland for the past and three climate scenarios. Differences in the possible temperature trajectories are highlighted with a focus on elevation and regional climatic differences within Switzerland. Snow height and ground temperatures under a changing climate are modeled with the one-dimensional physical model SNOWPACK by applying a delta change signal to the meteorological data set obtained from the CH2011 climate scenarios of Switzerland. All sites showed a decrease of snow cover, a shortening of the snow season and an increase in ground temperature to the end of the century. Sites in the inner alpine regions of Grisons were found to be less sensitive to climate change than sites in the western Alps. The magnitude of reduction of mean snow height depends mainly on location, whereas for the contraction of the snow season elevation is the key factor. It could be shown that the temperature–precipitation combination as expressed in the snow dynamics explain changes in ground temperatures more than the individual changes in either parameter. Alpine meadow and thin snow cover appear to delay warming of the ground.

Abstract:We present a high‐resolution dataset covering the mean air temperatures of every night in the summers of 2007–2022 in a medium‐sized city in Europe. The dataset is conducted using a land use regression approach that follows the principles of open data and low costs. We apply the dataset for two possible use cases and discuss the applicability and possible extensions as well as the limitations of such a dataset and the technique in general. To prepare for a hotter future, information on intra‐urban temperature distributions is crucial for cities worldwide. In recent years, different methods to compute high‐resolution temperature datasets have been developed. Such datasets commonly originate from downscaling techniques, which are applied to enhance the spatial resolution of existing data. In this study, we present an approach based on a fine‐scaled low‐cost urban temperature measurement network and a formerly developed land use regression approach. The dataset covers mean nocturnal temperatures of 16 summers (2007–2022) of a medium‐sized urban area with adapted land cover data for each year. It has a high spatial (50 m) and temporal (daily) resolution and performs well in validation (RMSEs of 0.70 and 0.69 K and mean biases of +0.41 and −0.19 K for two validation years). The dataset can be used to examine very detailed statistics in space and time, such as first heatwave per year, cumulative heat risks or inter‐annual variability. Here, we evaluate the dataset with two application cases regarding urban planning and heat risk assessment, which are of high interest for both researchers and practitioners. Due to potential biases of the low‐cost measurement devices during daytime, the dataset is currently limited to night‐time temperatures. With minor adaptions, the presented approach is transferable to cities worldwide in order to set a basis for researchers, city administrations and private stakeholders to address their heat mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Abstract:CHclim25 is a climatic dataset with a 25 m resolution for Switzerland that includes daily, monthly and yearly layers for temperature, precipitation, relative sunshine duration, growing degree-days, potential evapotranspiration, bioclimatic variables and aridity. The dataset is downscaled from a daily 1 km resolution dataset from the Swiss federal agency for meteorology using local regressions with an elevation model to better account for local topography and complex local climatic phenomena. Climatic layers are provided for individual years, 1981–2010 baseline period and future periods 2020–2049, 2045–2074, and 2070–209. Future layers incorporate three regional/global circulation models and three representative concentration pathways. We compare our predictions with values observed at independent weather stations and show that errors are minimal in comparison to the original dataset at 1 km resolution, and that the dataset is more accurate than available climatic global datasets at 30' resolution, especially at high elevation. CHclim25 improves the temporal and spatial accuracy of climatic data available for Switzerland and enables new studies at very high resolution in ecology and environmental sciences.

Abstract:With global climate change, temperatures in Switzerland are projected to rise in the coming decades, according to the national climate scenarios CH2018. Associated with the mean temperature increase, heatwaves are expected to become longer, more frequent, and more intense. The changing climate will affect the indoor climate as well as heating and cooling needs. In building design, these climatic changes have to be planned for today in order to ensure a comfortable indoor climate in the future. In collaboration with practitioners, a reference climate data set for the future is created that specifically targets building designers and engineers. The data set consists of hourly weather data of one-year length based on the Swiss climate change scenarios CH2018. These future reference years are representative of two time periods in the future: one around 2030 and one around 2060. Climate change uncertainty is considered by using two emission scenarios (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5). Reference data for the future is provided not only for a typical year (called Design Reference Year, or DRY) but also for an above-average warm summer. The data is available at the sites of 45 measurement stations across Switzerland, including four stations inside major cities to take the urban heat island effect into account. The generated climate data set is applied to a building model to provide an application example. The results point out that the cooling needs will substantially increase, which is why an adaptation of the building design to the changing climate is vital.

Abstract:To improve our understanding of the health impacts of high and low temperatures, epidemiological studies require spatiotemporally resolved ambient temperature (Ta) surfaces. Exposure assessment over various European cities for multi-cohort studies requires high resolution and harmonized exposures over larger spatiotemporal extents. Our aim was to develop daily mean, minimum and maximum ambient temperature surfaces with a 1 × 1 km resolution for Europe for the 2003–2020 period. We used a two-stage random forest modelling approach. Random forest was used to (1) impute missing satellite derived Land Surface Temperature (LST) using vegetation and weather variables and to (2) use the gap-filled LST together with land use and meteorological variables to model spatial and temporal variation in Ta measured at weather stations. To assess performance, we validated these models using random and block validation. In addition to global performance, and to assess model stability, we reported model performance at a higher granularity (local). Globally, our models explained on average more than 81 % and 93 % of the variability in the block validation sets for LST and Ta respectively. Average RMSE was 1.3, 1.9 and 1.7 °C for mean, min and max ambient temperature respectively, indicating a generally good performance. For Ta models, local performance was stable across most of the spatiotemporal extent, but showed lower performance in areas with low observation density. Overall, model stability and performance were lower when using block validation compared to random validation. The presented models will facilitate harmonized high-resolution exposure assignment for multi-cohort studies at a European scale.

Abstract:We present a high-resolution hydrometeorological and snow dataset from the alpine Dischma watershed and its surroundings in eastern Switzerland, including station measurements of variables such as snow depth and catchment runoff. This dataset is particularly suited for different modelling experiments using distributed and process-based models, including physics-based snow and hydrological models. Additionally, the data is highly useful for testing various snow data assimilation schemes and for developing models representing snow-forest interactions. The dataset covers seven water years from 1 October 2016 to 30 September 2023. The complete domain spans an area of 333 km2 with altitudes ranging from 1250 to 3228 meters. The Dischma basin, with its outlet at 1671 m elevation, occupies 42.9 km2. Included in the dataset are high-resolution (100 m) hourly meteorological data (air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, precipitation, as well as long- and shortwave radiation), land cover characteristics (primarily forest properties), and a digital elevation model. Noteworthy, the dataset includes snow depth acquisitions obtained from airborne lidar and photogrammetry surveys, constituting the most extensive spatial snow depth dataset in the European Alps. Along with these gridded datasets, we provide daily quality-controlled snow depth recordings from seven sites, biweekly snow water equivalent measurements from two locations, and hourly runoff and stream temperature observations for the Dischma watershed. The data compiled in this study will be useful for further developing our ability to forecast snow and hydrological conditions in high-alpine headwater catchments that are particularly sensitive to ongoing climate change.

Abstract:Temperature increases are associated with an intensification of heavy sub‐daily extreme rainfall by approximately 7% per °C, in accordance with the Clausius‐Clapeyron (CC) relation. As a result of this intensification, there are concerns regarding the increased frequency and magnitude of floods in small to medium‐sized catchments. The high‐resolution two‐dimensional weather generator (WG), AWE‐GEN‐2d, offers an ideal tool to simulate the climate variables required to assess the catchment‐scale hydrological response at high resolution. However, it lacked an explicit representation of the relationship between temperature and precipitation that can mimic the CC relationship. Therefore, we introduce a newly revised version of the model, named AWE‐GEN‐2d‐CC, designed to mirror the observed CC scaling by conditioning the simulation of precipitation properties (intensity and area) on temperature. We demonstrate the model's efficacy in representing future extreme rainfall by simulating their potential impact on the hydrological response of a mountainous catchment in the Swiss Alps. Based on observations and future climate model projections, AWE‐GEN‐2d‐CC was used to generate large ensembles of present and end‐of‐century climate data at hourly and 2‐km resolutions, used subsequently as input to Topkapi‐ETH, a physically‐based, distributed hydrological model. The new version of the WG successfully mimics the CC scaling of heavy rainfall, leading to an intensification of short‐duration heavy rainfall in future climates, in contrast with the results obtained using the original model. This allows for a more realistic assessment of future rainfall impact on hydrological response, which, in the demonstration application, shows a modulated effect even for short durations.

Modeling Monthly Near-Surface Air Temperature from Solar Radiation and Lapse Rate: Application over Complex Terrain in Yellowstone National Park

Abstract:Spatially distributed surface temperature over complex topography is important to many ecological processes, but it varies spatially and temporally in complex ways and is difficult to measure at landscape scales at tens of meters resolution. Our goal is to develop a methodology that accurately predicts Surface temperature in mountain ecosystems. First, we modeled monthly incoming solar radiation (insolation) based on topography and observed variation in atmospheric conditions, and accounting for site latitude, elevation, and Surface orientation (slope and aspect), daily and seasonal shifts in sun angle, and effects of shadows cast by surrounding topography. Then we investigated the ability to predict monthly average temperature from lapse rates together with energy input from insolation. Monthly lapse rates are not constant and have a seasonal variation. Monthly temperature is not highly correlated with the corresponding monthly insolation; however, it is highly correlated with a one-month-lag insolation, enabling calculation of a lag-corrected linear regression. We used this regression to calculate 30 m resolution surface temperature maps for mountain areas at Yellowstone National Park. The comparison between our modeled temperature and observed temperature shows the mean average errors range from 0.90 degrees C to 1.49 degrees C. Our approach, with consideration of influences of topography and variable atmospheric conditions on energy from insolation, and with appropriate time lags, greatly improves the ability to calculate spatially distributed temperature regimes in complex terrain.
High-resolution spatiotemporal modeling of daily near-surface air temperature in Germany over the period 2000–2020

Abstract:The commonly used weather stations cannot fully capture the spatiotemporal variability of near-surface air temperature (Tair), leading to exposure misclassification and biased health effect estimates. We aimed to improve the spatiotemporal coverage of Tair data in Germany by using multi-stage modeling to estimate daily 1 × 1 km minimum (Tmin), mean (Tmean), maximum (Tmax) Tair and diurnal Tair range during 2000-2020. We used weather station Tair observations, satellite-based land surface temperature (LST), elevation, vegetation and various land use predictors. In the first stage, we built a linear mixed model with daily random intercepts and slopes for LST adjusted for several spatial predictors to estimate Tair from cells with both Tair and LST available. In the second stage, we used this model to predict Tair for cells with only LST available. In the third stage, we regressed the second stage predictions against interpolated Tair values to obtain Tair countrywide. All models achieved high accuracy (0.91 ≤ R2 ≤ 0.98) and low errors (1.03 °C ≤ Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) ≤ 2.02 °C). Validation with external data confirmed the good performance, locally, i.e., in Augsburg for all models (0.74 ≤ R2 ≤ 0.99, 0.87 °C ≤ RMSE ≤ 2.05 °C) and countrywide, for the Tmean model (0.71 ≤ R2 ≤ 0.99, 0.79 °C ≤ RMSE ≤ 1.19 °C). Annual Tmean averages ranged from 8.56 °C to 10.42 °C with the years beyond 2016 being constantly hotter than the 21-year average. The spatial variability within Germany exceeded 15 °C annually on average following patterns including mountains, rivers and urbanization. Using a case study, we showed that modeling leads to broader Tair variability representation for exposure assessment of participants in health cohorts. Our results indicate the proposed models as suitable for estimating nationwide Tair at high resolution. Modeling Near-Surface Air Temperature from Solar Radiation and Lapse Rate: New Development on Short-Term Monthly and Daily Approach

Abstract:Short-term monthly mean temperature (T-m) and short-term daily mean temperature (T-d) rather than long-term monthly and daily mean temperature ((T) over bar (m) and (T) over bar (d)) are preferred for some ecosystem studies such as carbon source and sink, pine beetle mortality, and snow melting. The recent progress of modeling T-m and T-d (based on the previous work on (T) over bar (m)) supported by climatologically aided interpolation (CAI) is reported over the mountainous Yellowstone National Park. With the spatial scale of a 30 m digital elevation model (DEM), the slope, aspect, and shadows cast by surrounding topography, which could not be well captured by very coarse DEM, could be taken into account. Data from 12 months (Jan-Dec 2008) and 12 dates (25 Jan-Dec 2008) were used to demonstrate the approach. Inverse distance weighting (IDW) interpolations of limited temperature anomalies were adopted to represent the deviations from normality. (T) over bar (m), as a preexisting climatology surface, was added to deviations in order to model T-m. Linear temporal interpolation of adjacent (T) over bar (m) was used to create a climatology surface, which was then added to deviations in order to model T-d. Results show the mean absolute errors (MAEs) for T-m ranged from 0.75 degrees C to 1.78 degrees C, while the MAEs for T-d ranged from 1.14 degrees C to 2.02 degrees C. The four factors of elevation, seasonal change of lapse rate, temperature difference caused by variation in solar radiation, and preexisting climatology surface for the CAI approach were comprehensively considered in this approach.

Abstract:This research applied clustering to unsupervised learning of meteorological data and evaluated the impact of urban morphology on temperature in different weather. Air Temperature Learning Algorithms (ATLAS) was developed for the cluster analysis of urban meteorological data and regression analysis of urban morphology and outdoor air temperature. The case study experiment was conducted on the university campus. Based on principal component analysis (PCA) reduced K-means clustering, this study evaluated the characteristics of reference meteorological data, and local solar irradiance and air temperature. Three weather conditions were identified for the given reference meteorological data. Revised selection criteria for clear, hot, and calm weather in tropical climate were proposed. The mean R a i n t o t shall be less than 0.01 mm, with 25th, 50th and 75th quartile to be 0 mm, respectively. The mean W a v g and its quartiles shall be less than 3 m/s. The mean, 50th and 75th quartile of S t o t , S m a x , and S a v g shall be higher than 5000 Wh/m2, 800 W/m2 and 200 W/m2, respectively. The mean, 50th and 75th quartile of T a v g , T m a x and T m i n shall be higher than 29 °C , 32 °C and 26 °C , respectively. The hourly ground level air temperature models were established in different weather. The results indicate the ground level air temperature in rainy and cool weather conditions are more predictable than hot and dry weather conditions. The sky view factor, exterior wall area, and green plot ratio have a greater impact on air temperature in sunny days than rainy days.

Simulated hailstorms over Switzerland in May 2018 in current and future climate conditions

Abstract:Several remarkable hailstorms have occurred on the territory of Switzerland during the month of May, 2018. This period has been simulated, using the WRF4.0 model at a convection-permitting resolution (1.5 km), using different microphysical schemes (Thompson, Morrison, P3). The surrogate climate change approach has been used for imitating the climate conditions, corresponding to the end of the 21st century (CMIP5 model data, RCP8.5 scenario). The HAILCAST-1D model output has been used as a measure of simulated hail size and 5- minute 3-D radar reflectivity field has been used for cell identification and tracking. Hailstorms produced in the current climate and in surrogate climate change simulations have been examined using neighborhood methods and a storm-tracking algorithm. Current-climate simulated hailstorms were compared with the ground observations and MeteoSwiss radar data. The influence of microphysical schemes to the characteristics of simulated hailstorms has been studied.&#160;
Mapping Local Climate Zones (LCZ) Change in the 5 Largest Cities of Switzerland

Abstract:In the face of climate change and population growth, Local Climate Zone (LCZ) maps have emerged as crucial tools for urban planners and policymakers to address Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects, thereby playing a significant role in mitigating climate change. This study presents a methodology for classifying major Swiss cities into LCZs, offering an efficient, cost-effective, and uniform tool for supporting climate action plans across municipalities and cantons. Initial results show that Sentinel-2, Landsat 8, and Landsat 5 imagery perform well in LCZ classification with an overall accuracy usually exceeding 80%, and Sentinel-2 displays marginally superior performance. Temporal analysis reveals that the built-up classes of Open low-rise and Open mid-rise have increased by ~3%, while Large low-rise and Bare rock or paved have decreased, and Compact mid-rise remains stable. For the natural classes, Water and Dense trees remain stable, but Low plants have declined (~4%). A general decline in overall accuracy over time is noted, attributed to landscape changes. This preliminary effort emphasizes the need to enhance and automate the methodology, integrate it into the Swiss Data Cube, and potentially extend analyses with climate data to better study UHI effects. Future work will include developing visualization and tracking services for urban planners and authorities.

Abstract:This work provides a significant contribution on the open debate in the climate community to establish the added value of very high-resolution configurations, characterized by a horizontal resolution below 4 km with respect to current state-of-the-art climate simulations (10–15 km). Specifically, it aims at assessing quantitative gains and losses in the performance of climate models caused by an enhancement in temporal and spatial resolution by evaluating the capability of different climate simulations in reproducing daily and sub-daily present precipitation dynamics over a complex orographic context such as the Alpine region. In this perspective, the results of three experiments (EURO-CORDEX ensemble mean, CCLM 8 and CCLM 2.2) at different spatial (~ 12, 8 and 2.2 km) and temporal (daily, 6 h and 3 h) scales are compared to gridded and point-scale observational datasets. Precipitation data are analyzed by mean of the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices indicators, as well as with statistical models able to evaluate the precipitation distribution and the extreme values for different durations of precipitation events. To objectively assess gains and losses in adopting high-resolution RCMs, data are elaborated assuming the distribution added value as metric, particularly focusing on the role of orography. The work returns, at daily scale, a gain in climate model performances moving from lower to higher horizontal resolution. At the same time, investigating the effect of the orography the simulation with the finest grid proves to better capture local precipitation dynamics at higher altitudes in terms of both sub-daily precipitation and extreme events.

Abstract:Abstract. This study describes and evaluates a new downscaling scheme that specifically addresses the need for hillslope-scale atmospheric-forcing time series for modelling the local impact of regional climate change projections on the land surface in complex terrain. The method has a global scope in that it does not rely directly on surface observations and is able to generate the full suite of model forcing variables required for hydrological and land surface modelling in hourly time steps. It achieves this by utilizing the previously published TopoSCALE scheme to generate synthetic observations of the current climate at the hillslope scale while accounting for a broad range of surface–atmosphere interactions. These synthetic observations are then used to debias (downscale) CORDEX climate variables using the quantile mapping method. A further temporal disaggregation step produces sub-daily fields. This approach has the advantages of other empirical–statistical methods, including speed of use, while it avoids the need for ground data, which are often limited. It is therefore a suitable method for a wide range of remote regions where ground data is absent, incomplete, or not of sufficient length. The approach is evaluated using a network of high-elevation stations across the Swiss Alps, and a test application in which the impacts of climate change on Alpine snow cover are modelled.
