Abstract:Elevated atmospheric CO, concentrations and warming may affect the quality of litters of form plants and their subsequent decomposition in ecosystems, thereby potentially affecting the global carbon cycle. However, few data on root tissues are available to test this feedback to the atmosphere. In this study, we used fine (diameter <= 2 mm) and small (2-10 mm) roots of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) seedlings that were grown for 4 yr in a 2 x 2 factorial experiment: ambient or elevated (+ 180 ppm) atmospheric CO2 concentrations, and ambient or elevated (+3.8 degrees C) atmospheric temperature. Exposure to elevated CO2 significantly increased water-soluble extractives concentration (%WSE), but had little effect on the concentration of N, cellulose, and lignin of roots. Elevated temperature had no effect on substrate quality except for increasing %WSE and decreasing the %lignin content of fine roots. No significant interaction was found between CO, and temperature treatments on substrate quality, except for %WSE of the fine roots. Short-term (<= 9 mo) root decomposition in the field indicated that the roots from the ambient CO, and ambient temperature treatment had the slowest rate. However, over a longer period of incubation (9-36 mo) the influence of initial substrate quality on root decomposition diminished. Instead, the location of the field incubation sites exhibited significant control on decomposition. Roots at the warmer, low elevation site decomposed significantly faster than the ones at the cooler, high elevation site. This study indicates that short-term decomposition and long-term responses are not similar. It also suggests that increasing atmospheric CO2 had little effect on the carbon storage of Douglas-fir old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest.

Abstract:Soil microbial communities are extremely complex, being composed of thousands of low-abundance species (<0.1% of total). How such complex communities respond to natural or human-induced fluctuations, including major perturbations such as global climate change, remains poorly understood, severely limiting our predictive ability for soil ecosystem functioning and resilience. In this study, we compared 12 whole-community shotgun metagenomic data sets from a grassland soil in the Midwestern United States, half representing soil that had undergone infrared warming by 2 degrees C for 10 years, which simulated the effects of climate change, and the other half representing the adjacent soil that received no warming and thus, served as controls. Our analyses revealed that the heated communities showed significant shifts in composition and predicted metabolism, and these shifts were community wide as opposed to being attributable to a few taxa. Key metabolic pathways related to carbon turnover, such as cellulose degradation (similar to 13%) and CO2 production (similar to 10%), and to nitrogen cycling, including denitrification (similar to 12%), were enriched under warming, which was consistent with independent physicochemical measurements. These community shifts were interlinked, in part, with higher primary productivity of the aboveground plant communities stimulated by warming, revealing that most of the additional, plant-derived soil carbon was likely respired by microbial activity. Warming also enriched for a higher abundance of sporulation genes and genomes with higher G+C content. Collectively, our results indicate that microbial communities of temperate grassland soils play important roles in mediating feedback responses to climate change and advance the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of community adaptation to environmental perturbations.
Warming Enhances Old Organic Carbon Decomposition Through Altering Functional Microbial Communities.

Abstract:Soil organic matter (SOM) stocks contain nearly three times as much carbon (C) as the atmosphere and changes in soil C stocks may have a major impact on future atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and climate. Over the past two decades, much research has been devoted to examining the influence of warming on SOM decomposition in topsoil. Most SOM, however, is old and stored in subsoil. The fate of subsoil SOM under future warming remains highly uncertain. Here, by combining a long-term field warming experiment and a meta-analysis study, we showed that warming significantly increased SOM decomposition in subsoil. We also showed that a decade of warming promoted decomposition of subsoil SOM with turnover times of decades to millennia in a tall grass prairie and this effect was largely associated with shifts in the functional gene structure of microbial communities. By coupling stable isotope probing with metagenomics, we found that microbial communities in warmed soils possessed a higher relative abundance of key functional genes involved in the degradation of organic materials with varying recalcitrance than those in control soils. These findings suggest warming may considerably alter the stability of the vast pool of old SOM in subsoil, contributing to the long-term positive feedback between the C cycle and climate.

Abstract:Climate change may alter soil microbial communities and soil organic matter (SOM) composition. Soil carbon (C) cycling takes place over multiple time scales; therefore, long-term studies are essential to better understand the factors influencing C storage and help predict responses to climate change. To investigate this further, soils that were heated by 5 °C above ambient soil temperatures for 18 years were collected from the Barre Woods Soil Warming Study at the Harvard Forest Long-term Ecological Research site. This site consists of large 30 × 30 m plots (control or heated) where entire root systems are exposed to sustained warming conditions. Measurements included soil C and nitrogen concentrations, microbial biomass, and SOM chemistry using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and solid-state 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. These complementary techniques provide a holistic overview of all SOM components and a comprehensive understanding of SOM composition at the molecular-level. Our results showed that soil C concentrations were not significantly altered with warming; however, various molecular-level alterations to SOM chemistry were observed. We found evidence for both enhanced SOM decomposition and increased above-ground plant inputs with long-term warming. We also noted shifts in microbial community composition while microbial biomass remained largely unchanged. These findings suggest that prolonged warming induced increased availability of preferred substrates, leading to shifts in the microbial community and SOM biogeochemistry. The observed increase in gram-positive bacteria indicated changes in substrate availability as gram-positive bacteria are often associated with the decomposition of complex organic matter, while gram-negative bacteria preferentially break down simpler organic compounds altering SOM composition over time. Our results also highlight that additional plant inputs do not effectively offset chronic warming-induced SOM decomposition in temperate forests.

Abstract:Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi can influence the establishment and performance of host species by increasing nutrient and water absorption. Therefore, understanding the response of ECM fungi to expected changes in the global climate is crucial for predicting potential changes in the composition and productivity of forests. While anthropogenic activity has, and will continue to, cause global temperature increases, few studies have investigated how increases in temperature will affect the community composition of ectomycorrhizal fungi. The effects of global warming are expected to be particularly strong at biome boundaries and in the northern latitudes. In the present study, we analyzed the effects of experimental manipulations of temperature and canopy structure (open vs. closed) on ectomycorrhizal fungi identified from roots of host seedlings through 454 pyrosequencing. The ecotonal boundary site selected for the study was between the southern boreal and temperate forests in northern Minnesota, USA, which is the southern limit range for Picea glauca and Betula papyrifera and the northern one for Pinus strobus and Quercus rubra. Manipulations that increased air and soil temperature by 1.7 and 3.4 °C above ambient temperatures, respectively, did not change ECM richness but did alter the composition of the ECM community in a manner dependent on host and canopy structure. The prediction that colonization of boreal tree species with ECM symbionts characteristic of temperate species would occur was not substantiated. Overall, only a small proportion of the ECM community appears to be strongly sensitive to warming.

Abstract:Climate change globally affects soil microbial community assembly across ecosystems. However, little is known about the impact of warming on the structure of soil microbial communities or underlying mechanisms that shape microbial community composition in subtropical forest ecosystems. To address this gap, we utilized natural variation in temperature via an altitudinal gradient to simulate ecosystem warming. After 6 years, microbial co‐occurrence network complexity increased with warming, and changes in their taxonomic composition were asynchronous, likely due to contrasting community assembly processes. We found that while stochastic processes were drivers of bacterial community composition, warming led to a shift from stochastic to deterministic drivers in dry season. Structural equation modelling highlighted that soil temperature and water content positively influenced soil microbial communities during dry season and negatively during wet season. These results facilitate our understanding of the response of soil microbial communities to climate warming and may improve predictions of ecosystem function of soil microbes in subtropical forests.

Abstract:Global warming may reshape seasonal changes in microbial community diversity and co-occurrence network patterns, with significant implications for terrestrial ecosystem function. We conducted a 2-year in situ field simulation of the effects of warming on the seasonal dynamics of soil microbial communities in a northern subtropical Quercus acutissima forest. Our study revealed that warming had no significant effect on the richness or diversity of soil bacteria or fungi in the growing season, whereas different warming gradients had different effects on their diversity in the nongrowing season. Warming also changed the microbial community structure, increasing the abundance of some thermophilic microbial species and decreasing the abundance of some symbiotrophic microorganisms. The co-occurrence network analysis of the microbial community showed that warming decreased the complexity of the intradomain network in the soil bacterial community in the growing and nongrowing seasons but increased it in the fungal community. Moreover, increasing warming temperatures increased the complexity of the interdomain network between bacteria and fungi in the growing season but decreased it in the nongrowing season, and the keystone species in the interdomain network changed with warming. Warming also reduced the proportion of positive microbial community interactions, indicating that warming reduced the mutualism, commensalism, and neutralism of microorganisms as they adapted to soil environmental stress. The factors affecting the fungal community varied considerably across warming gradients, with the bacterial community being significantly affected by soil temperature, MBC, NO3--N and NH4+-N, moreover, SOC and TN significantly affected fungal communities in the 4 °C warming treatment. These results suggest that warming increases seasonal differences in the diversity and complexity of soil microbial communities in the northern subtropical region, significantly influencing soil dynamic processes regulating forest ecosystems under global warming.

Abstract:Global warming may accelerate soil carbon (C) and nutrient cycling as higher temperatures accelerate soil microbial and enzymatic activities. However, this enhanced soil C cycling can diminish with time due to the depletion of labile soil C or due to thermal acclimation of soil microbes, while the increased N cycling may be dampened over time in N-rich soils. Moreover, soil climate as well as the quality and quantity of plant inputs change between seasons, which could influence the C: nitrogen (N): phosphorus (P) stoichiometry of resources available for microbes and thereby alter the warming effect on microbial activities and nutrient cycling between seasons. Such seasonal changes caused inconsistent warming effects on extracellular enzyme activities and on soil respiration in some experiments, with warming effects turning from positive to negative between seasons, yet the underlying controls of these adverse effects are far from being well understood. In this study, we therefore aimed to investigate soil warming and seasonal effects on soil C, N, and P pools and processes in a temperate calcareous mixed forest. We collected soil samples in spring, summer and fall (May, August, and October 2019) from a long-term (>15 yrs) soil warming experiment in Achenkirch, Northern Limestone Alps, Austria (47&#176;34&#8217; 50&#8217;&#8217; N; 11&#176;38&#8217; 21&#8217;&#8217; E; 910 m a.s.l.). The samples were incubated at the corresponding in-situ temperatures in the laboratory. Microbial growth, respiration and C use efficiency were determined by following 18O-H2O incorporation in DNA and by gas analysis. 15N pool dilution assays were applied to quantify gross rates of protein depolymerization, N mineralization, and nitrification, whilst gross rates of soil inorganic P mobilization were measured by a 33P pool dilution assay. Moreover, we measured the potential soil enzyme activities of four hydrolases and two oxidases, and determined contents of labile (extractable) and microbial biomass C, N, and P. This study will thereby provide a comprehensive insight into how soil warming influences soil microbial C, N, and P cycling in a temperate calcareous mixed forest as well as into their energetic, stoichiometric and soil microclimatic constraints. The long-term nature of this soil warming experiment will therefore allow predictions of the future biogeochemical behavior of calcareous forest soils, and deduce potential feed-backs on forest productivity, atmospheric composition and climate change.
Long‐term soil warming decreases soil microbial necromass carbon by adversely affecting its production and decomposition

Abstract:Our study reveals that prolonged soil warming in temperate forests diminishes microbial necromass carbon (MNC). This decline is primarily due to reduced soil phosphorus, necessary for microbial biomass synthesis, and enhanced soil enzyme activities that accelerate MNC decomposition. These factors create a disconnect between MNC production and decomposition, leading to decreased MNC accumulation under warming conditions. Microbial necromass carbon (MNC) accounts for a large fraction of soil organic carbon (SOC) in terrestrial ecosystems. Yet our understanding of the fate of this large carbon pool under long‐term warming is uncertain. Here, we show that 14 years of soil warming (+4°C) in a temperate forest resulted in a reduction in MNC by 11% (0–10 cm) and 33% (10–20 cm). Warming caused a decrease in the content of MNC due to a decline in microbial biomass carbon and reduced microbial carbon use efficiency. This reduction was primarily caused by warming‐induced limitations in available soil phosphorus, which, in turn, constrained the production of microbial biomass. Conversely, warming increased the activity of soil extracellular enzymes, specifically N‐acetylglucosaminidase and leucine aminopeptidase, which accelerated the decomposition of MNC. These findings collectively demonstrate that decoupling of MNC formation and decomposition underlie the observed MNC loss under climate warming, which could affect SOC content in temperate forest ecosystems more widespread.

Experimental soil warming shifts the fungal community composition at the alpine treeline

Abstract:Increased CO2 emissions and global warming may alter the composition of fungal communities through the removal of temperature limitation in the plant-soil system, faster nitrogen (N) cycling and changes in the carbon (C) allocation of host plants to the rhizosphere. At a Swiss treeline featuring Larix decidua and Pinus uncinata, the effects of multiple years of CO2 enrichment and experimental soil warming on the fungal community composition in the organic horizons were analysed using 454-pyrosequencing of ITS2 amplicons. Sporocarp production and colonization of ectomycorrhizal root tips were investigated in parallel. Fungal community composition was significantly altered by soil warming, whereas CO2 enrichment had little effect. Tree species influenced fungal community composition and the magnitude of the warming responses. The abundance of ectomycorrhizal fungal taxa was positively correlated with N availability, and ectomycorrhizal taxa specialized for conditions of high N availability proliferated with warming, corresponding to considerable increases in inorganic N in warmed soils. Traits related to N utilization are important in determining the responses of ectomycorrhizal fungi to warming in N-poor cold ecosystems. Shifts in the overall fungal community composition in response to higher temperatures may alter fungal-driven processes with potential feedbacks on ecosystem N cycling and C storage at the alpine treeline.
Contrasting Responses of Soil Microbial and Nematode Communities to Warming and Plant Functional Group Removal Across a Post-fire Boreal Forest Successional Gradient

Abstract:Global warming is causing increases in surface temperatures and has the potential to influence the structure of soil microbial and faunal communities. However, little is known about how warming interacts with other ecosystem drivers, such as plant functional groups or changes associated with succession, to affect the soil community and thereby alter ecosystem functioning. We investigated how experimental warming and the removal of plant functional groups along a post-fire boreal forest successional gradient impacted soil microbial and nematode communities. Our results showed that warming altered soil microbial communities and favored bacterial-based microbial communities, but these effects were mediated by mosses and shrubs, and often varied with successional stage. Meanwhile, the nematode community was generally unaffected by warming and was positively affected by the presence of mosses and shrubs, with these effects mostly independent of successional stage. These results highlight that different groups of soil organisms may respond dissimilarly to interactions between warming and changes to plant functional groups, with likely consequences for ecosystem functioning that may vary with successional stage. Due to the ubiquitous presence of shrubs and mosses in boreal forests, the effects observed in this study are likely to be significant over a large proportion of the terrestrial land surface. Our results demonstrate that it is crucial to consider interactive effects between warming, plant functional groups, and successional stage when predicting soil community responses to global climate change in forested ecosystems.

Enhanced Decomposition of Stable Soil Organic Carbon and Microbial Catabolic Potentials by Long-Term Field Warming

Abstract:Quantifying soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition under warming is critical to predict carbon-climate feedbacks. According to the substrate regulating principle, SOC decomposition would decrease as labile SOC declines under field warming, but observations of SOC decomposition under warming do not always support this prediction. This discrepancy could result from varying changes in SOC components and soil microbial communities under warming. This study aimed to determine the decomposition of SOC components with different turnover times after subjected to long-term field warming and/or root exclusion to limit C input, and to test whether SOC decomposition is driven by substrate lability under warming. Taking advantage of a 12-year field warming experiment in a prairie, we assessed the decomposition of SOC components by incubating soils from control and warmed plots, with and without root exclusion for 3years. We assayed SOC decomposition from these incubations by combining inverse modeling and microbial functional genes during decomposition with a metagenomic technique (GeoChip). The decomposition of SOC components with turnover times of years and decades, which contributed to 95% of total cumulative CO2 respiration, was greater in soils from warmed plots. But the decomposition of labile SOC was similar in warmed plots compared to the control. The diversity of C-degradation microbial genes generally declined with time during the incubation in all treatments, suggesting shifts of microbial functional groups as substrate composition was changing. Compared to the control, soils from warmed plots showed significant increase in the signal intensities of microbial genes involved in degrading complex organic compounds, implying enhanced potential abilities of microbial catabolism. These are likely responsible for accelerated decomposition of SOC components with slow turnover rates. Overall, the shifted microbial community induced by long-term warming accelerates the decomposition of SOC components with slow turnover rates and thus amplify the positive feedback to climate change.

Abstract:Abstract Phosphorus (P) is an essential and often limiting element that could play a crucial role in terrestrial ecosystem responses to climate warming. However, it has yet remained unclear how different P cycling processes are affected by warming. Here we investigate the response of soil P pools and P cycling processes in a mountain forest after 14 years of soil warming (+4 °C). Long-term warming decreased soil total P pools, likely due to higher outputs of P from soils by increasing net plant P uptake and downward transportation of colloidal and particulate P. Warming increased the sorption strength to more recalcitrant soil P fractions (absorbed to iron oxyhydroxides and clays), thereby further reducing bioavailable P in soil solution. As a response, soil microbes enhanced the production of acid phosphatase, though this was not sufficient to avoid decreases of soil bioavailable P and microbial biomass P (and biotic phosphate immobilization). This study therefore highlights how long-term soil warming triggers changes in biotic and abiotic soil P pools and processes, which can potentially aggravate the P constraints of the trees and soil microbes and thereby negatively affect the C sequestration potential of these forests.

In a large-scale soil warming experiment in a Chinese fir plantation, fine root dynamics were monitored for four years using minirhizotrons, and the effects of increasing temperature and co-varying factors on fine root lifespan, such as soil moisture, fine root phenology and architecture, were analysed. Fine root non-structural carbohydrate concentrations and respiration rates were measured to test if fine root lifespan is affected by carbon (C) supply. Warming shortened the overall fine root lifespan by 27.6% (warming vs. control: 197.0 ± 3.5 d vs. 272.0 ± 4.5 d). Cox regression models suggest that increased soil temperature directly and negatively affects root lifespan, whereas decreased soil moisture prolongs root lifespan. Fine roots grew thinner and deeper in warm soil and showed higher emergence in winter but lower emergence in summer; all factors affected the fine root lifespan in an integrated manner. Glucose addition stimulated fine root respiration only in warm soil, indicating a depletion of readily available carbohydrates under warming. Overall, our findings suggest that warming could accelerate the input of C by roots into soil due to shortened fine root lifespans, highlighting the important consideration of simultaneously increasing temperature and its co-varying factors to predict root lifespan under climate change.

Abstract:Trees can invest up to one-third of the carbon (C) fixed by photosynthesis into belowground allocation, including fine root exudation into the rhizosphere. It is still unclear how climate and soil warming affect tree root C exudation, in particular quantifying longer-term warming effects remains a challenge. In this study, using a C-free cuvette incubation method, in situ C exudation rates from tree fine roots of a mature spruce dominated temperate forest were measured in regular intervals during the 14th and 15th year of experimental soil warming (+ 4°C). In addition, a short-term temperature sensitivity experiment (up to + 10°C warming within 4 days) was conducted to determine the inherent temperature sensitivity of root exudation. Root exudation rates in the long-term warmed soil (17.9 μg C g –1 root biomass h –1 ) did not differ from those in untreated soil (16.2 μg C g –1 root biomass h –1 ). However, a clear increase (Q 10 ∼5.0) during the short-term temperature sensitivity experiment suggested that fine root exudation can be affected by short-term changes in soil temperature. The absence of response in long-term warmed soils suggests a downregulation of C exudation from the individual fine roots in the warmed soils. The lack of any relationship between exudation rates and the seasonal temperature course, further suggests that plant phenology and plant C allocation dynamics have more influence on seasonal changes in fine root C exudation. Although exudation rates per g dry mass of fine roots were only marginally higher in the warmed soil, total fine root C exudation per m 2 soil surface area increased by ∼30% from 0.33 to 0.43 Mg C ha –1 yr –1 because long-term soil warming has led to an increase in total fine root biomass. Mineralization of additional fine root exudates could have added to the sustained increase in soil CO 2 efflux from the warmed forest soil at the experimental site.

Abstract:Boreal and temperate forests, spanning cold mid- to high-latitude environments and encompassing about 43% of the global forest area, are highly vulnerable to warming. Understanding the response of soil carbon (C) dynamics in these forests to warming is of paramount importance, yet significant uncertainty remains. In this meta-analysis, data from 97 studies across 65 sites were synthesized to investigate the effects of warming on soil C inputs, pools, and outputs in boreal and temperate forests. Our results reveal that warming increased aboveground biomass (by 33%) and litterfall (by 15%), while decreasing litter mass remaining (by 7%), with no significant change observed in fine root biomass. Furthermore, warming led to a 9% increase in soil total respiration and a 15% increase in autotrophic respiration, yet had no discernible impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) content. The methods, magnitude, and duration of warming were found to regulate the responses of soil C dynamics. Buried heater warming elicited the most pronounced effects among warming methods. Additionally, soil total respiration exhibited an acclimation response to warming magnitude and duration, while litter decomposition rates increased and SOC content and microbial biomass C decreased with escalating warming magnitude. Moreover, greater soil respiration response occurred in temperate forests than in boreal forests. These findings underscore the nuanced and context-dependent nature of soil C dynamics in response to experimental warming, providing critical insights for understanding the role of boreal and temperate forests in future climate change mitigation strategies.

Abstract:High‐latitude tundra ecosystems are increasingly affected by climate warming. As an important fraction of soil microorganisms, fungi play essential roles in carbon degradation, especially the old, chemically recalcitrant carbon. However, it remains obscure how fungi respond to climate warming and whether fungi, in turn, affect carbon stability of tundra. In a 2‐year winter soil warming experiment of 2°C by snow fences, we investigated responses of fungal communities to warming in the active layer of an Alaskan tundra. Although fungal community composition, revealed by the 28S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, remained unchanged ( p > .05), fungal functional gene composition, revealed by a microarray named GeoChip, was altered ( p < .05). Changes in functional gene composition were linked to winter soil temperature, thaw depth, soil moisture, and gross primary productivity (canonical correlation analysis, p < .05). Specifically, relative abundances of fungal genes encoding invertase, xylose reductase and vanillin dehydrogenase significantly increased ( p < .05), indicating higher carbon degradation capacities of fungal communities under warming. Accordingly, we detected changes in fungal gene networks under warming, including higher average path distance, lower average clustering coefficient and lower percentage of negative links, indicating that warming potentially changed fungal interactions. Together, our study reveals higher carbon degradation capacities of fungal communities under short‐term warming and highlights the potential impacts of fungal communities on tundra ecosystem respiration, and consequently future carbon stability of high‐latitude tundra.

Abstract:Quantifying soil carbon dynamics is of utmost relevance in the context of global change because soils play an important role in land–atmosphere gas exchange. Our current understanding of both present and future carbon dynamics is limited because we fail to accurately represent soil processes across temporal and spatial scales, partly because of the paucity of data on the relative importance and hierarchical relationships between microbial, geochemical and climatic controls. Here, using observations from a 3,000-kyr-old soil chronosequence preserved in alluvial terrace deposits of the Merced River, California, we show how soil carbon dynamics are driven by the relationship between short-term biotic responses and long-term mineral weathering. We link temperature sensitivity of heterotrophic respiration to biogeochemical soil properties through their relationship with microbial activity and community composition. We found that soil mineralogy, and in particular changes in mineral reactivity and resulting nutrient availability, impacts the response of heterotrophic soil respiration to warming by altering carbon inputs, carbon stabilization, microbial community composition and extracellular enzyme activity. We demonstrate that biogeochemical alteration of the soil matrix (and not short-term warming) controls the composition of microbial communities and strategies to metabolize nutrients. More specifically, weathering first increases and then reduces nutrient availability and retention, as well as the potential of soils to stabilize carbon.

Enzymic moderations of bacterial and fungal communities on short- and long-term warming impacts on soil organic carbon

Abstract:Microbial communities play critical roles in soil carbon-warming feedback, but our understanding of their linkages to soil carbon (C) pools in response to short- and long-term warming is deficient. Here, by conducting a meta-analysis of 150 studies, we show that short-term (<5 years) warming mainly affects soil labile carbon (LC) pools by changing bacterial community structure, while long-term (≥5 years) warming promotes the decomposition of recalcitrant C (RC) pools by increasing fungal biomass and decreasing actinobacterial biomass. Specifically, under short-term warming, significant increases in actinobacterial biomass (+15.9%) and the G+/G- ratio (+8.0%) were accompanied by an increase in carbon-degrading enzyme activities and a decrease in LC (−5.9%). Under long-term warming, the fungal biomass (+20.4%) and related POX (phenol oxidase) activity (+34.9%) increased significantly, while actinobacterial biomass (−20.1%), RC (−18.8%) and SOC (−6.7%) decreased. Meanwhile, we observed that warming impacts on soil microbial communities can be predicted by ecosystem type, the magnitude of warming, pH and elevation. Latitude and warming duration contributed the most to explaining the responses of LC and RC, respectively, across studies. Given that RC accounts for a substantial fraction of global soil C pools, the decline in RC pools greatly contributes to soil C degradation. Our findings suggest that different microbial groups may mediate the temporal dynamics of the decomposition of different soil C components and highlight that incorporating the temporal responses of soil microorganisms will improve predictions of the long-term dynamics of soil C pools in a warmer world.

Abstract:In order to explore the influence of climate warming on soil microbial metabolism in the ecosystem and reveal the relationship between soil microbial metabolism limitation and environmental factors, in this study, the effects of warming on soil enzyme activities and nutrient availability were investigated by setting underground heating cables at 2 °C and 4 °C soil warming in a typical Quercus acutissima forest in the northern subtropics, and enzyme stoichiometric models were used to evaluate the limits of soil microbial metabolism. The results showed that soil warming significantly increased the activities of β-1,4-glucosidase (BG) and L-leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), and significantly increased the contents of nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) and available phosphorus (AP) in soil. The soil warming increased soil microbial C limitation and alleviated soil microbial P limitation. Our study showed that the change of soil microbial C and P limitation caused by warming may cause a large amount of SOM decomposition in a short period, leading to a large fluctuation of soil carbon turnover, which is not conducive to the stability of the soil C pool. This study provides important insights linking microbial metabolism to soil warming and improves our understanding of C cycling in forest systems.
