Abstract:The editors approached the 40th anniversary of the International Journal of Lifelong Education as an opportunity to consider the field by exploring how a corpus of 1462 articles (the first 40 volumes of the journal) questioned and shaped the field. A subset of advisory board members and the editors gathered in 2021 in groups to analyse major topics. The records of the reading, analyses and discussions of these groups offer a unique snapshot of the field and the journal's place in it. In this paper, the editors draw three topics from that work which delineate fundamental debates of lifelong education and reveal how the journal's authors have contributed to them. The topics are: citizenship and its learning; learning in, through and for work; and widening participation and higher education. Comparing the works contributing to these topical areas indicates how the field is evolving. It becomes clear that research and theory in lifelong education should remain vigilant, critical and robust if the field is to continue as a site of hope for future citizens, workers and students, rather than appropriated as an object for measurement, calculation and deployment for relatively narrow, less-than-human interests.

Abstract:With this issue, the International Journal of Lifelong Education enters its fortieth year of publication. It was launched, under the editorship of Peter Jarvis and J.E. (Teddy) Thomas, in a different era. We are now embarking on a two-year project to mark the completion of this anniversary, and to launch us into our fifth decade. The project involves looking back and peering forward. It comprises two main elements, the outcomes of which will, we hope, be published in two forthcoming special issues of the journal. The first element, and the first special issue, will explore key themes in the development of adult lifelong education over the past four decades, reflect on how the field has changed and is changing, and discuss priorities for research, policy and practice to ensure lifelong education plays a full and effective part in addressing human concerns for the next decade and beyond.

Abstract:In 2007, the British Department of Education and Skills published a white paper titled "Curriculum Review: Diversity and Citizenship". Based on the analysis of the citizenship education in the past few years, the white paper proposed some suggestions for reforming citizenship education which include hearing pupils' voice in citizenship education, conducting citizenship education in all subject teaching and providing related training for school leaders and teachers. It especially put great importance on education for diversity to build a more harmonious society.

Abstract:With the 50th anniversary of the journal, this special issue takes stock of the progress that has been made within sociology to become a more globally oriented discipline and discusses the new challenges for the future that emerge as a consequence. From its inception, classical sociology was primarily concerned with the European origins of processes of modernity that were to become global. There was little discussion of how the global might be understood in terms of structures, processes and social movements not directly identified as European but nonetheless contributing to modernity. The challenge for sociology has been to take into account these other phenomena and to rethink its core categories and concepts in light of newly understood alternative formations of the global and the social movements that bring them about.

Abstract:Business &Society, Ahead of Print. This Special Issue commemorates the 60th anniversary of Business & Society with nine rigorous literature reviews that address important societal problems and provide opportunities for theory development in the business and society field; in this introduction we present an overview of the Special Issue. With the theme "Building on Its Past," the nine articles address a host of contemporary issues, including climate change, wicked problems, business and human rights, human health, certifications standards, the governance of artificial intelligence, stakeholder engagement, stakeholder theory, and corporate political activity. Together, these reviews offer a wealth of suggested themes, theories and approaches that can drive our research forward for the next decades in business and society research and practice. Using the lens of a miner-prospector continuum to categorize the diversity of articles within this special issue, a common theme emerges across the portfolio of reviews: they all call for a more systemic and integrative perspective toward studying the complex interactions that link business and society actors and issues. Building on these findings, we encourage future scholars to fill long-standing researched gaps through a more open systems approach, which supports both contextually sensitive and multi-level and multi-disciplinary approaches to address grand societal challenges. We conclude with specific suggestions as to how business and society scholars might use an open systems approach, including embracing methodologies to address complex causal pathways, theorizing with a view towards spanning external and internal elements of an organization, and reflecting on the temporal and spatial dynamics of complex systems.

Abstract:2010 marks the thirtieth anniversary of Social Sciences in China (founded in January 1980).Over the past thirty years,under the guidance of Marxism,this journal has been committed to becoming an authoritative locus for the presentation of an in-depth picture of cutting-edge scholarly achievement,the spirit of the times and Chinese experience,and to being a high quality platform promoting the flourishing of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics as well as an important window for displaying the contemporary wisdom of the Chinese people,wisdom of world-historical significance.With its consistent encouragement of original works by new authors,Social Sciences in China has attracted large numbers of like-minded scholars and become a nursery for leading researchers in philosophy and social sciences.In commemoration of its thirtieth anniversary,the editorial office has organized a special issue on the topic "Social Sciences in China and Academic Progress in Contemporary China." Among others,Professor Yu Wujin from the Institute of Philosophy of Fudan University has used his own research experience and academic background to look back and reflect on the significant role of this journal in creatively advancing Marxist philosophical research.He trusts that as the most innovative and foremost theoretical journal in China,it will make a still greater contribution to the development of contemporary Chinese scholarship.Professor Gu Hailiang,President of Wuhan University,addresses the necessity of and pathways to interdisciplinary study in modern society and expresses the hope that Social Sciences in China will undertake new initiatives in promoting interdisciplinary study across humanities and social sciences.Professor Wang Shaoguang from the Department of Government and Public Administration of the Chinese University of Hong Kong offers a review of the thirty years of development of political science in China.He holds that after the stages of "learning," "imitation" and "self-consciousness," China's political science should take a further bold step toward localization.By the time Social Sciences in China celebrates its sixtieth anniversary,Chinese political scientists should be producers and exporters of concepts,methods,theories and ideas.Research Fellow Yu Pei from the Institute of World History of CASS argues that during the thirty-plus years of reform and opening up,China's world history research has undergone a profound change,from translation,compilation and general introduction to systematic,independent and in-depth research.The intellectual force and character of the times reflected in Social Sciences in China are of fundamental guiding significance for academic progress in contemporary China.Professor Tang Yijie from the Department of Philosophy of Peking University explores the value and significance for the current construction of a harmonious society of Confucianism's dominant role in Chinese traditional culture.According to Tang,it is impossible to build a harmonious society without cultural tradition as a basis.Our present study of Confucianism should absorb and utilize the Confucian mode of thinking,life wisdom and other valuable ideas in order to provide an intellectual pathway and worthwhile ideas for the construction of a harmonious human society.Professor Tang Kailin from the Center for Studies in Moral Culture of Hunan Normal University explores the basic connotation and evolution of the ethics of wealth as well as the fundamental principles and contemporary relevance of research on this topic,which he believes will effectively overcome the moral shortcomings arising from the unregulated character of the market economy and promote healthy and orderly economic operation.Professor Xu Xianming,President of Shandong University,discusses some normative issues relating to the idea of a university from the perspective of human rights and the rule of law; he holds that universities should be marked by the integration of moral excellence,intellectual depth,innovation and uniqueness.

Abstract:This article discusses the expansion of education systems that now, following international declarations, are expected to offer an “Education for All” to children, young people and adults. Since in these declarations special education and inclusive education are conjoined, sociological questions can be asked as to what sort of social relationships and conflicts are involved in this expansion of a sub-system that underpins mass education. The article uses recent research asking school and college heads, teachers and administrators, how they defined and treated the young people and what future they envisaged for them, given that an ideology of human capital dominates government thinking and policy.

Abstract:The Digital Journalism editorial team is thrilled to introduce this 10th anniversary special issue. At the beginning of 2022, we invited our international editorial board to contribute to this important collection, which aims to explore the diverse and multi-disciplinary nature of digital journalism studies. We called for contributions that consider the "big picture" of the field and look at the past and the present of digital journalism studies. We also invited articles focusing on digital journalism studies for the future, considering trends, concepts, theories, methodologies, and key issues that will shape research in the decades ahead. This special issue features six articles, advancing systematic empirical assessments of developments in the field, as well as critical discussions around the developments and politics of digital journalism studies.

Abstract:National styles of ‘doing sociology’ exist, all celebrating respective founding fathers’. Timid, British pragmatism has tended to misrecognise Durkheim ever since our barely transcended early 20th century origins. In relatively low‐status teacher education, even when sociology of education was popularly taught from the late sixties through the seventies, Durkheim was presented as a conservative anti‐hero. The only important exception to this condition was the teaching and research of Basil Bernstein, unfortunately buried by the excesses both of ‘New Directions’ and the neo‐Marxisms which recoiled from it in the seventies. His always numerous and active group of research students became the main carriers of his voice. There are now some signs that failure strewn, maligned and substantially dispersed sociology of education is evincing fresh interest in his and Durkheim's work. Bernstein's interest, since the middle 1950s, has been the study of symbolic systems which function as pedagogic relays. He alone in modern sociology has attempted to move from the seconds that make up the classroom moment, through institutional to societal power structures, in a way that not only insists on conceptual consistency but thinks it not worth having unless it produces both models and empirical markers.

Abstract:In the current (2021) volume, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Journal of Moral Education. It is, indeed, an honour for me to be at the helm of this venerable journal—still the leading one in the fields of moral education and (developmental) moral psychology—at such a significant juncture, especially as the 50-year-old seems to be fairly sprightly for its age. My original aim was to write an anniversary editorial for the summer issue, coinciding with the joint AME/JME/APNME conference, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the JME, in the UK in July. Although that conference had to be postponed for a year for pandemic-related reasons, I still decided to put pen to paper and offer some anniversary-inspired reflections for readers of our journal.

Abstract:On the fiftieth anniversary of Joyce Ladner’s The Death of white Sociology, we write this critical reflection to explore the discipline’s historical, often explicit oversight and investment in Whiteness. The historical roots of “mainstream”, white sociology are inundated with pathologization, dehumanization, and exclusion of Black people, the Black community, and Black scholarship. From graduate program training and conferencing to peer-review processes and the academic job market, Black sociologists are expected to center white hegemonic ideals of professionalism and academic rigor. We write this critical reflection exploring the edited volume’s implications for discussing anti-Blackness as well as the methodological and theoretical significance of Black sociology past and present. As Black sociologists and doctoral scholars, this reflection serves as a call to the discipline to grapple with texts such as The Death of white Sociology, the discomfort it may cause, and how the exclusion of such work directly harms the training and careers of Black graduate students.

Abstract:This study reviews the process of research development of sociology of education in mainland China,with special references to focus,self-consciousness and knowledge system of the discipline of sociology of education. The study argues that sociology of education has been well established in China,with its sub-disciplines quickly developed,and its three streams of research—practically-oriented formative research,education and social stratification,and interpretative sociology of education—well progressed. The study calls for engaging in unique and systematical theoretical studies as the main direction for the future development of sociology of education.

Abstract:In an effort to address the relationship between globalisation, education and Niklas Luhmann’s branch of systems theory, we present his essay, published here for the first time in English translation, ‘Education: Forming the life course’, next to the nine contributions that compose this special issue and build on this and his other writings to take up the theme of education in world society. To conclude, we underline that systems theory’s emphasis on functional differentiation helps to address two lacunae in the today prevailing sociological practice. By positing the development of self-referential domains as modernity’s central mode of differentiation, it provides sociology with a comprehensive theory of world society. By the same token, it also allows one to observe education as a global affair with, so to speak, a life of its own.

PurposeThis study provides an overview of the changes and developments of the sociology of education in China as it enters the new era as well as its future outlook.Design/Approach/MethodsThis study combed and analyzed research in the field of the sociology of education in China during the period from 2012 to 2022 on three issues—educational fairness, rural education, and educational reform—to clarify the field's research characteristics and trends.FindingsIn the new era, scholarship on the sociology of education has shifted to focus on achieving high-quality education, modernization, and digitization as new avenues for promoting educational fairness, rural education, and educational reform. As a result, research on the sociology of education in China has employed broader perspectives, adopted a more reflexive approach toward research objects, and embraced more humanistic values.Originality/ValueThis study compiles research on the sociology of education in China in the new era and identifies that the field is moving toward a highly integrative approach. The findings provide useful references for learning and understanding the sociology of education in China.

Notes on the history of SocialScienceResearch: In celebration of its 50th anniversary

Abstract:This paper reports a first look at the founding of Social Science Research, providing a few key signposts but keenly aware that a full history must await recovery of many additional documentary materials. The journal was founded by James S. Coleman and Peter H. Rossi, who had trained at Columbia, taught at Chicago, and founded the interdisciplinary Department of Social Relations at Johns Hopkins. The Coleman-Rossi vision statement embeds three key ideas: (1) quantitative theoretical work and quantitative empirical work are close and constant partners; (2) quantitative theoretical work and quantitative empirical work each require special methods; and (3) crossing disciplinary lines spurs the growth of knowledge. The first issue of Social Science Research appeared in 1972. Then as now, SSR welcomed papers that may be too innovative or too technical (or too long or too short) for other journals, inclusive of papers that cross traditional disciplinary lines. Examination of the first four volumes (1972-1975) reveals a beautiful realization of the founders' vision - a collection of rigorous quantitative papers from across the social sciences, pushing frontiers in both theory and empirics and in both substance and methods. There is innovation and creativity - and a touch of the playfulness that accelerates the growth of knowledge.
