Abstract:In this paper, we study an epidemic model in a periodic patchy environment. It is assumed that all the parameters share the same period N∈N. When the basic reproduction number R0>1, we first establish the spreading speed of traveling wave, which is denoted by c*. Then we show that for each c ≥ c*, the system admits a nontrivial traveling wave solution with the speed c if R0>1. We also show that there is no nontrivial traveling wave solution when R0≤1 and c > 0, or R0>1 and c ∈ (0, c*). This indicates that the spreading speed coincides with the minimum wave speed of traveling waves. Finally, we discuss the dependence of R0 and c* on the heterogeneity and amplitude of the parameters of our model.

Abstract:We study the spreading speed of a diffusive epidemic model proposed by Li et al. \cite{LL}, where the Stefan boundary condition is imposed at the right boundary, and the left boundary is subject to the homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann condition, respectively. A spreading-vanishing dichotomy and some sharp criteria were obtained in \cite{LL}. In this paper, when spreading happens, we not only obtain the exact spreading speed of the spreading front described by the right boundary, but derive some sharp estimates on the asymptotical behavior of solution component $(u,v)$. Our arguments depend crucially on some detailed understandings for a corresponding semi-wave problem and a steady state problem.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the spreading speed of a cholera epidemic model, which is built upon a time-periodic reaction-diffusion system that is not necessarily monotonic. When the initial distribution of infected hosts and bacteria appears on a compact domain, we derive a rough expansion speed of the infection and the bacteria over space. Our results indicate that the disease may spread at an almost constant average speed. Although our approach can not give an explicit threshold in general, our conclusions imply that there exists a constant spreading speed and the numerical simulation is applicable to estimate the spreading ability of the disease in further application. Furthermore, if the parameters are constants, we obtain an explicit formulation of spreading speed. When incidence functions take the special form, the spreading speed is the minimal wave speed of traveling wave solutions in earlier works. Additionally, the theoretical findings of this work highlight that the movement of infected hosts and bacteria, and direct and indirect transmission routes are important factors affecting the spatial spreading ability of cholera.

Abstract:This paper investigates the propagation dynamics for an epidemic model with nonlinear incidence rates in a patchy environment. Giving a general setting of the nonlinear incidence rates (monotone or non-monotone), we establish a framework that provides a complete characterization on the existence, non-existence and minimal wave speed of traveling waves which describe the evolution of disease starting from initial disease-free state to final disease-free state. In addition, we obtain the exponential decay rates of infected waves, which reveal that the number of infected individuals increases exponentially when the disease breaks out and decreases exponentially when the disease declines toward extinction. Our results solve the propagation problem for a wide range of spatial discrete epidemic models.

Abstract:This article studies the spreading properties in an asymptotic autonomous non-cooperative system that can be regarded as an epidemic model or a predator–prey system. In particular, due to the effect of nonlocal delay, it is possible that the system does not satisfy the comparison principle for mixed quasimonotone systems. When the initial value has proper decaying behavior, we obtain a constant spreading speed of solutions. Finally, the main result is applied to a stage-structured susceptible-latent-infected-recovered-matured epidemic model to show its spreading feature by presenting the spreading speed about the susceptible and the infected.

Abstract:This article studies the initial value problem in an asymptotic autonomous reaction–diffusion system. Namely, when the time goes to infinity, these parameters converge to constants. The system may be nonmonotonic. With different decaying initial conditions, the leftward and rightward spreading speeds are estimated by constructing auxiliary functions and systems. As an application, we present the propagation properties in a diffusive epidemic model with different decaying initial values, which does not satisfy the classical comparison principle of mixed quasimonotone systems.

Abstract:Social contact networks and the way people interact with each other are the key factors that impact on epidemics spreading. However, it is challenging to model the behavior of epidemics based on social contact networks due to their high dynamics. Traditional models such as susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model ignore the crowding or protection effect and thus has some unrealistic assumption. In this paper, we consider the crowding or protection effect and develop a novel model called improved SIR model. Then, we use both deterministic and stochastic models to characterize the dynamics of epidemics on social contact networks. The results from both simulations and real data set conclude that the epidemics are more likely to outbreak on social contact networks with higher average degree. We also present some potential immunization strategies, such as random set immunization, dominating set immunization, and high degree set immunization to further prove the conclusion.

Abstract:This work is concerned with the spatiotemporal propagation phenomena for a time-periodic reaction-diffusion susceptible-infectious (SI) epidemic model with treatment in terms of the asymptotic speed of spread and periodic traveling waves. First, the asymptotic speed of spread c* is characterized and the spreading properties of the model are analyzed by combining the periodic principal eigenvalue problem, comparison method, and the uniform persistence idea for a dynamical system. Second, by constructing suitable super- and subsolutions for truncation problems corresponding to the traveling wave system, the existence of periodic traveling waves is established via the fixed point theorem twice. It turned out that the asymptotic speed of spread coincides with the minimum wave speed of periodic traveling waves. Finally, via numerical simulation, the effects of some important parameters (such as diffusion rate, treatment rate, etc.) on the spreading speed are discussed, and the asymptotic properties of the periodic traveling waves are explored.

Abstract:The impact that information diffusion has on epidemic spreading has recently attracted much attention. As a disease begins to spread in the population, information about the disease is transmitted to others, which in turn has an effect on the spread of disease. In this paper, using empirical results of the propagation of H7N9 and information about the disease, we clearly show that the spreading dynamics of the two-types of processes influence each other. We build a mathematical model in which both types of spreading dynamics are described using the SIS process in order to illustrate the influence of information diffusion on epidemic spreading. Both the simulation results and the pairwise analysis reveal that information diffusion can increase the threshold of an epidemic outbreak, decrease the final fraction of infected individuals and significantly decrease the rate at which the epidemic propagates. Additionally, we find that the multi-outbreak phenomena of epidemic spreading, along with the impact of information diffusion, is consistent with the empirical results. These findings highlight the requirement to maintain social awareness of diseases even when the epidemics seem to be under control in order to prevent a subsequent outbreak. These results may shed light on the in-depth understanding of the interplay between the dynamics of epidemic spreading and information diffusion.

Abstract:Based on the assumptions that an infectious disease in a population has a fixed latent period and the latent individuals of population may disperse, combined with seasonal factors, an almost periodic model with non-local infections and latency in a patchy environment is investigated. Draw support from the idea of the next generation operator, the definition of the basic reproduction number is given. Furthermore, the global dynamical theory of the model is studied using the basic regeneration number as a threshold parameter. It is shown that the disease will die out in the sense that the disease-free almost periodic solution of the model is globally attractive if , while the disease is uniformly persistent when . Finally, this paper numerically simulates the model in a two patch environment, and verifies the propagation mechanism of the almost periodic infectious disease model. Moreover, Some numerical simulations indicate that population distribution between patches has a significant impact on the spread of diseases and show that the periodic epidemic models may overestimate or underestimate the disease risk comparing with the almost periodic model.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an SIR epidemic model with nonlocal diffusion and double free boundaries, which can be used to describe a class of biological phenomena: the depletion of native resources by all individuals, the infected individuals do not lose their fertility completely, the recovered individuals are immune and no longer infected, the infected and recovered individuals spread along the same free boundary. We first investigate the existence and uniqueness of global solution, long time behaviors and some sufficient conditions for spreading and vanishing. Then we estimate the spreading speed and derive that accelerated spreading could happen when the kernel function does not satisfy a threshold condition.

Abstract:This paper examines an epidemic patch model with mass-action transmission mechanism and asymmetric connectivity matrix. Results on the global dynamics of solutions and the spatial structures of endemic solutions are obtained. In particular, we show that when the basic reproduction number $\mathcal{R}_0$ is less than one and the dispersal rate of the susceptible population $d_S$ is large, the population would eventually stabilize at the disease-free equilibrium. However, the disease may persist if $d_S$ is small, even if $\mathcal{R}_0<1$. In such a scenario, explicit conditions on the model parameters that lead to the existence of multiple endemic equilibria are identified. These results provide new insights into the dynamics of infectious diseases in multi-patch environments. Moreover, results in [27], which is for the same model but with symmetric connectivity matrix, are generalized and improved.

Abstract:We develop a multi-group epidemic framework via virtual dispersal where the risk of infection is a function of the residence time and local environmental risk. This novel approach eliminates the need to define and measure contact rates that are used in the traditional multi-group epidemic models with heterogeneous mixing. We apply this approach to a general n-patch SIS model whose basic reproduction number [Formula: see text] is computed as a function of a patch residence-time matrix [Formula: see text]. Our analysis implies that the resulting n-patch SIS model has robust dynamics when patches are strongly connected: There is a unique globally stable endemic equilibrium when [Formula: see text], while the disease-free equilibrium is globally stable when [Formula: see text]. Our further analysis indicates that the dispersal behavior described by the residence-time matrix [Formula: see text] has profound effects on the disease dynamics at the single patch level with consequences that proper dispersal behavior along with the local environmental risk can either promote or eliminate the endemic in particular patches. Our work highlights the impact of residence-time matrix if the patches are not strongly connected. Our framework can be generalized in other endemic and disease outbreak models. As an illustration, we apply our framework to a two-patch SIR single-outbreak epidemic model where the process of disease invasion is connected to the final epidemic size relationship. We also explore the impact of disease-prevalence-driven decision using a phenomenological modeling approach in order to contrast the role of constant versus state-dependent [Formula: see text] on disease dynamics.
Longtime behaviors of an epidemic model with nonlocal diffusions and a free boundary: rate of accelerated spreading

Abstract:This is the third part of our series of work devoted to the dynamics of an epidemic model with nonlocal diffusions and free boundary. This part is concerned with the rate of accelerated spreading for three types of kernel functions when spreading happens. By constructing the suitable upper and lower solutions, we get the rate of the accelerated spreading of free boundary, which is closely related to the behavior of kernel functions near infinity. Our results indicate that the heavier the tail of the kernel functions are, the faster the rate of accelerated spreading is. Moreover, more accurate spreading profiles for solution component $(u,v)$ are also obtained.

Abstract:International Journal of Biomathematics, Ahead of Print. During the outbreak of major emerging infectious diseases, virus droplets can survive in the environment as aerosols for hours to days, and their impact on human infectious diseases is often overlooked. In addition, the speed of transmission of infectious diseases is often closely related to transportation. Therefore, studying the impact of environmental viruses and transportation on disease development is significant for effective infectious disease prevention and control. We proposed a degenerate reaction–diffusion infectious disease model ([math]) considering environmental virus interference and established a well-posedness and threshold system for this model. We have obtained the system solution approaches the disease-free equilibrium ([math]) when the basic reproduction number [math]. The system has at least one positive steady state solution (PSS) when [math]. This paper used a non-standard finite difference method discretization model while data fitting and parameter estimation were performed based on data provided by the Health Commission. Further sensitivity analysis was conducted on [math]. At the same time, we also discussed the impact of various parameters in the early stages of the outbreak of major emerging infectious diseases on the development of the disease. Research found that even if the contact rate between people is controlled at a shallow level, the disease may persist. In the early stages of major emerging outbreak of infectious diseases, immediately reducing the use of transportation can effectively reduce the speed of disease spread.

Abstract:This paper involves a diffusive epidemic model whose domain has one free boundary with the Stefan boundary condition, and one fixed boundary subject to the usual homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann condition. By using the standard upper and lower solutions method and the regularity theory, we first study some related steady state problems which help us obtain the exact longtime behaviors of solution component $(u,v)$. Then we prove there exists the unique classical solution whose longtime behaviors are governed by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. Lastly, the criteria determining when spreading or vanishing happens are given with respect to the basic reproduction number $\mathcal{R}_0$, the initial habitat $[0,h_0]$, the expanding rates $\mu_1$ and $\mu_2$ as well as the initial function $(u_0,v_0)$. The criteria reveal the effect of the cooperative behaviors of agents and humans on spreading and vanishing.

Abstract:Immuno-epidemiological models with distributed recovery and death rates can describe the epidemic progression more precisely than conventional compartmental models. However, the required immunological data to estimate the distributed recovery and death rates are not easily available. An epidemic model with time delay is derived from the previously developed model with distributed recovery and death rates, which does not require precise immunological data. The resulting generic model describes epidemic progression using two parameters, disease transmission rate and disease duration. The disease duration is incorporated as a delay parameter. Various epidemic characteristics of the delay model, namely the basic reproduction number, the maximal number of infected, and the final size of the epidemic are derived. The estimation of disease duration is studied with the help of real data for COVID-19. The delay model gives a good approximation of the COVID-19 data and of the more detailed model with distributed parameters.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic spreading properties and periodic traveling wave solutions of a time periodic and diffusive SI epidemic model with demographic structure (follows the logistic growth). Since the comparison principle is not applicable to the full system, we analyze the asymptotic spreading phenomena for susceptible class and infectious class by comparing with respective relevant periodic equations with KPP-type. By applying fixed point theorem to a truncated problem on a finite interval, combining with limit idea, the existence of periodic traveling wave solutions are derived. The results show that the minimal wave speed exactly equals to the spreading speed of infectious class when susceptible class is abundant.
