Abstract:Thermal sensation, which is the conversion of a temperature stimulus into a biological response, is the basis of the fundamental physiological processes that occur ubiquitously in all organisms from bacteria to mammals. Significant efforts have been devoted to fabricating artificial membranes that can mimic the delicate functions of nature; however, the design of a bionic thermometer remains in its infancy. Herein, we report a nanofluidic membrane based on an ionic covalent organic framework (COF) that is capable of intelligently monitoring temperature variations and expressing it in the form of continuous potential differences. The high density of the charged sites present in the sub-nanochannels renders superior permselectivity to the resulting nanofluidic system, leading to a high thermosensation sensitivity of 1.27 mV K −1 , thereby outperforming any known natural system. The potential applicability of the developed system is illustrated by its excellent tolerance toward a broad range of salt concentrations, wide working temperatures, synchronous response to temperature stimulation, and long-term ultrastability. Therefore, our study pioneers a way to explore COFs for mimicking the sophisticated signaling system observed in the nature.

Abstract:Mechanochromic smart membranes capable of optical modulation have great potential in smart windows, artificial skins, and camouflage. However, the realization of high-contrast optical modulation based on light scattering activated at a low strain remains challenging. Here, we present a strategy for designing mechanochromic scattering membranes by introducing a Young's modulus mismatch between the two interdigitated polydimethylsiloxane phases with weak interfaces in a periodic three-dimensional (3D) structure. The refractive index-matched interfaces of the nanocomposite provide a high optical transparency of 93%. Experimental and computational studies reveal that the 3D heterogeneity facilitates the generation of numerous nanoscale debonds or "nanogaps" at the modulus-mismatching interfaces, enabling incident light scattering under tension. The heterogeneous scatterer delivers both a high transmittance contrast of >50% achieved at 15% strain and a maximum contrast of 82%. When used as a smart window, the membrane demonstrates effective diffusion of transmitting sunlight, leading to moderate indoor illumination by eliminating extremely bright or dark spots. At the other extreme, such a 3D heterogeneous design with strongly bonded interfaces can enhance the coloration sensitivity of mechanophore-dyed nanocomposites. This work presents insights into the design principles of advanced mechanochromic smart membranes.

Abstract:Two-dimensional nanosheet membranes with responsive nanochannels are appealing for controlled mass transfer/separation, but limited by everchanging thicknesses arising from unstable interfaces. Herein, an interfacially stable, thermo-responsive nanosheet membrane is assembled from twin-chain stabilized metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets, which function via two cyclic amide-bearing polymers, thermo-responsive poly(N-vinyl caprolactam) (PVCL) for adjusting channel size, and non-responsive polyvinylpyrrolidone for supporting constant interlayer distance. Owing to the microporosity of MOF nanosheets and controllable interface wettability, the hybrid membrane demonstrates both superior separation performance and stable thermo-responsiveness. Scattering and correlation spectroscopic analyses further corroborate the respective roles of the two polymers and reveal the microenvironment changes of nanochannels are motivated by the dehydration of PVCL chains.

Thermally Responsive Photonic Fibers Consisting of Chained Nanoparticles

Abstract:Fibers that can reversibly and passively change colors along with body temperatures are highly desired for potential applications including temperature sensors, smart wearables, and photonic devices. Here, we develop a facile strategy to fabricate thermochromic photonic fibers, which could exhibit tunable structural colors as a function of temperatures. The thermochromic fibers are prepared by aligning superparamagnetic, carbon-encapsulated Fe3O4 colloidal nanocrystal clusters (Fe3O4@C CNCs) in a thermoresponsive hydrogel, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), forming chain-like structures under an external magnetic field before gelation. When the fiber is transferred from air to water at room temperature, it changes color from dark green to red as it swells. The red color can be reversibly changed back to green as the temperature is raised to 36 °C, while the fiber shrinks and the reflection peak shifts from 642 to 494 nm. The swelling of the fiber is anisotropic: by 60% in the diameter direction but 45% in the length direction. Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) based Nanofiltration (NF) membranes have promising advantages in the separation of dyes and salts to purify the industrial polluted water. Herein, we report the synthesis of porphyrinic, porous and ultra-fast photothermal sensitive iron tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) (Fe-TCPP) MOFs nanofibers and the corresponding thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes by facile interfacial polymerization (IP). The Fe-TCPP nanofibers based TFN membrane enhances the pure water permeance to 28.1 L.m(-2).h(-1).bar(-1) (i.e., 3.5-fold higher than thin film composite (TFC)) by providing continuous hydrophilic flow pathways to permeate. The Fe-TCPP nanofibers contribute to the surface of TFN membrane, resulting not only fast permeation, but also ultra-high rejection of dyes i.e., 97.2%, 98.3% and 99.1% for Indocyanine Green, Brilliant Blue-R and Direct Red-80, respectively. Additionally, the TFN membrane also demonstrates 23-43 % salts rejection. Due to the ultra-fast photothermal responsive nature of Fe-TCPP nanofibers (88.4 degrees C increased temperature in 2 sec photo exposure), the water permeation of TFN NF membrane increases 30 % with 0.5 min under visible light-irradiation. This photo-induced ON/OFF separation is switchable. The enhanced permeation, high dyes rejection and photo-modulated ON/OFF nano-separation opens a new avenue for TCPP-based MOFs in the water purification technologies.
Fabrication of High-Performance Colorimetric Membrane by Incorporation of Polydiacetylene into Polyarylene Ether Nitriles Electrospinning Nanofibrous Membranes

Abstract:Polyarylene ether nitrile (PEN) is a novel high-performance engineering plastic with various applications, particularly in thermoresistance-required fields. In this study, a well-known stimuli-response polydiacetylene monomer, 10, 12-pentacosadiynoic acid (PCDA), was encapsulated within electrospun PEN nanofibers to fabricate a colorimetric membrane with satisfactory thermal and corrosion resistance. To optimize the compatibility with PCDA, two PENswith distinct molecular chains were utilized: PEN−PPL and PEN−BPA. The chemical structure and elemental mapping analysis revealed that the PCDA component was successfully incorporated into the PEN fibrous. The PCDA bound significantly better to the PEN−PPL than to the PEN−BPA; due to the carboxyl groups present on the side chains of PEN−PPL, the surface was smooth and the color changed uniformly as the temperature rose. However, owing to its poor compatibility with PEN−BPA, the PCDA formed agglomerations on the fibers. The thermal analysis demonstrated that the membranes obtained after PCDA compounding maintained their excellent heat resistance. The 5% weight loss temperatures of composite nanofibrous membranes manufactured by PEN−PPL and PEN−BPA were 402 °C and 506 °C, respectively, and their glass transition temperatures were 219 °C and 169 °C, respectively, indicating that the blended membranes can withstand high temperatures. The evaluation of application performance revealed that the composite membranes exhibited good dimensional stability upon high thermal and corrosive situations. Specifically, the PEN−P−PCDA did not shrink at 170 °C. Both composite membranes were dimensionally stable when exposed to the alkali aqueous solution. However, PEN−P−PCDA is more sensitive to OH−, exhibiting color transition at pH > 8, whereas PEN−B−PCDA exhibited color transition at high OH− concentrations (pH ≥ 13), with enhanced alkali resistance stability owing to its nanofibrous architecture. This exploratory study reveals the feasibility of PEN nanofibers functionalized using PCDA as a desirable stimulus-response sensor even in high-temperature and corrosive harsh environments.

Abstract:From energy storage to separation applications, performances of nanoporous membranes are typically limited by an inherent trade-off between transport rate and selectivity. For example, conventional protective garments sacrifice breathability to prevent exposure to harmful agents, and this trade-off severely hinders the duration of their active use. The discovery of enhanced fluid flow in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) has provided a path toward combining the diametric properties of high selectivity and permeability into a single SWCNT-based material, yet successful demonstration of this promise remains elusive. Using as example the design of novel materials for protective clothing applications, herein we demonstrate a smart, nanoporous, SWCNT membrane that overcomes the limitation of conventional protective garments. Specifically, we show that the adoption of nanometer-wide SWCNTs for ultrafast moisture conduction [1] enables a simultaneous boost in size-sieving selectivity and water-vapor permeability by decreasing nanotube diameter, thereby overcoming the breathability/protection trade-off [2].Our membrane platform can rapidly and selectively transition from a highly breathable state in a safe environment to a protective state when exposed to a chemical threat. Dynamic response to chemical stimuli is achieved through the physical collapse of an ultrathin copolymer layer on the membrane surface, which efficiently gates transport through the SWCNT membrane pores [2].Multifunctional SWCNT membranes such these present exciting opportunities in many other areas including energy-efficient separations, energy storage, and smart delivery. Rationally Integrating Charge-Transfer Cocrystal and Ni(II) Organometallics for Visualized Photo/Thermochromic Sensors

Abstract:Smart materials demonstrate fascinating responses to environmental physical/chemical stimuli, including thermal, photonic, electronic, humidity, or magnetic stimuli, which have attracted intensive interest in material chemistry. However, their limited/harsh stimuli-responsive behavior or sophisticated postprocessing leads to enormous challenges for practical applications. Herein, we rationally designed and synthesized thermochromic Ni(II) organometallic [(C2H5)2NH2]2NiCl4-xBrx via a facile mechanochemical strategy, which demonstrated a reversible switch from yellow to blue color with a tunable phase-transition temperature from 75.6 to 61.7 °C. The simple electrospinning technology was applied to fabricate thermochromic Ni(II) organometallic-based nanofiber membranes for temperature monitoring. Furthermore, the organic charge-transfer cocrystal with a wide spectral absorption of 300-1950 nm and a high-efficiency photothermal conversion was combined with thermochromic Ni(II) organometallics for the desired dual-stimuli photo/thermochromism. This work supplies a new strategy for realizing multiple stimuli-responsive applications, such as thermal/light sensor displays and information storage.
Preparation of Thermosensitive Fluorescent Polyacrylamide Nanofiber Membrane and Visual Temperature Sensing

Abstract:Fluorescent fibers are capable of discoloration behavior under special light sources, showing great potential for applications in biomedicine, environmental monitoring, heavy-metal-ion detaction, and anti-counterfeiting. In the current paper, temperature-sensitive fluorescent poly-acrylamide (PAM) nanofiber (AuNCs@PAM NF) membranes are prepared by mixing red fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) synthesized in-house with PAM using the electrospinning technique. The AuNCs@PAM nanofibers obtained using this method present excellent morphology, and the AuNCs are uniformly dispersed in the fibers. The average diameter of the AuNCs@PAM NFs is 298 nm, and the diameter of AuNCs doped in the fibers is approximately 2.1 nm. Furthermore, the AuNCs@PAM NF films present excellent fluorescence and temperature-sensitive performance between 15 and 65 degrees. While under the 365 nm UV light source, the fiber film changes from white to red; this discoloration behavior weakens with the increase in temperature, and changes from deep to light red. Therefore, the approximate temperature can be identified using the color change, and a visual temperature-sensing effect can be achieved. The dual functions of temperature-sensitivity and fluorescent properties improve the scientificity and safety of nanofibers in the use of anti-counterfeiting technology.

Abstract:A key challenge to the creation of chemically responsive electro-functionality of nonconductive, hydrophobic, and free-contacted textile or fibrous network materials is how to impart the 3D structure with functional filaments to enable responsive structure sensitivity, which is critical in establishing the fibrous platform technology for sensor applications. We demonstrate this capability using an electrospun polymeric fibrous substrate embedded with nano-filaments defined by size-tunable gold nanoparticles and structurally sensitive dendrons as crosslinkers. The resulting interparticle properties strongly depend on the assembly of the nano-filaments, enabling an interface with high structure sensitivity to molecular interactions. This is demonstrated with chemiresistive responses to vaporous alcohol molecules with different chain lengths and isomers, which is critical in breath and sweat sensing involving a high-moisture or -humidity background. The sensitivity scales with the chain length and varies with their isomers. This approach harnesses the multifunctional tunability of the nano-filaments in a sensor array format, showing high structure sensitivity to the alcohol molecules with different chain lengths and isomers. High-Performance Waterproof, Breathable, and Radiative Cooling Membranes Based on Nanoarchitectured Fiber/Meshworks

Abstract:Smart membranes with protection and thermal-wet comfort are highly demanded in various fields. Nevertheless, the existing membranes suffer from a tradeoff dilemma of liquid resistance and moisture permeability, as well as poor thermoregulating ability. Herein, a novel strategy, based on the synchronous occurrence of humidity-induced electrospinning and electromeshing, is developed to synthesize a dual-network structured nanofiber/mesh for personal comfort management. Manipulating the ejection, deformation, and phase separation of spinning jets and charged droplets enables the creation of nanofibrous membranes composed of radiative cooling nanofibers and 2D nanostructured meshworks. With a combination of a true-nanoscale fiber (∼70 nm) in 2D meshworks, a small pore size (0.84 μm), and a superhydrophobic surface (151.9°), the smart membranes present high liquid repellency (95.6 kPa), improved breathability (4.05 kg m-2 d-1), and remarkable cooling performance (7.9 °C cooler than commercial cotton fabrics). This strategy opens up a pathway to the design of advanced smart textiles for personal protection.

Reusable Structural Colored Nanostructure for Powerless Temperature and Humidity Sensing

Abstract:Integrating an ultrathin poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) layer on a self‐assembled aluminum nanostructure results in a tunable thermoresponsive gap‐plasmon that transduces environmental changes in temperature and humidity into color variation. This new artificial composite material can be exploited as a fully reusable sensor and tamper‐proof dew‐label readable from a simple smartphone application. Nanostructured materials have enabled new ways of controlling the light–matter interaction, opening new routes for exciting applications, in display technologies and colorimetric sensing, among others. In particular, metallic nanoparticles permit the production of color structures out of colorless materials. These plasmonic structural colors are sensitive to the environment and thus offer an interesting platform for sensing. Here, a self‐assembly of aluminum nanoparticles in close proximity of a mirror is spaced by an ultrathin poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) layer. Hybridizing the plasmonic system with the active polymer layer, a thermoresponsive gap‐plasmon architecture is formed that transduces changes in the temperature and relative humidity of the environment into color changes. By harnessing the environmentally induced structural changes of PNIPAM, it was estimated from the finite difference time domain simulation that the resonance can be tuned 7 nm per every 1 nm change in thickness, resulting in color variation. Importantly, these fully reversible changes can be used for reusable powerless humidity and temperature colorimetric sensing. Crucially if condensation on the structure happens, the polymer layer is deformed beyond recovery and the colors are washed away. We leverage this effect to produce tamper‐proof dew labels that a straightforward smartphone app can read by taking a picture.

Abstract:Hybrid organic/inorganic nanocomposites based on aramid nanofibers (ANFs) and different amounts of poly-hedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanostructured chemicals were prepared via solution blending and vacuum-assisted flocculation, compared with traditional film fabrication methods, this process is time-saving by adopting ethanol as agglomerator. The mechanical properties of ANFPs membranes could be altered by changing the POSS content, in which the POSS served as a cross-linking agent between nanofibers, and ANFPs composite membrane presented the optimal tensile strength with 6 wt.% POSS NPs embedding in the nanocomposite. In addition to the satisfactory mechanical performance and vitreousness, the unique thermal assets of ANFs and POSS further enabled the membranes with high thermal stability. Based on these results, it could be concluded that the ANFPs membranes developed here might provide the alternative materials for the practical application of strong, transparent and heat-resistant membrane.

Abstract:Highly sensitive and flexible pressure sensors were developed based on dielectric membranes composed of insulating microbeads contained within polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers. The membrane is fabricated using a simple electrospinning process. The presence of the microbeads enhances porosity, which in turn enhances the sensitivity (1.12 kPa(-1) for the range of 0-1 kPa) of the membrane when used as a pressure sensor. The microbeads are fixed in position and uniformly distributed throughout the nanofibers, resulting in a wide dynamic range (up to 40 kPa) without any sensitivity loss. The fluffy and nonsticky PVDF nanofiber features low hysteresis and ultrafast response times (similar to 10 ms). The sensor has also demonstrated reliable pressure detection over 10 000 loading cycles and 250 bending cycles at a 13 mm bending radius. These pressure sensors were successfully applied to detect heart rate and respiratory signals, and an array of sensors was fabricated and used to recognize spatial pressure distribution. The sensors described herein are ultrathin and ultralight, with a total thickness of less than 100 mu m, including the electrodes. All of the materials comprising the sensors are flexible, making them suitable for on-body applications such as tactile sensors, electronic skins, and wearable healthcare devices.

Abstract:Accurately and sensitively sensing and monitoring the pH in the environment is a key fundamental issue for human health. Nanomaterial and nanotechnology combined with fluorescent materials can be emerged as excellent possible methods to develop high-performance sensing membranes and help monitor pH. Herein, a series of fluorescent nanofiber membranes (NFMs) containing poly-1,8-naphthimide derivative-3-[dimethyl-[2-(2-methylprop-2-enoyloxy)ethyl]azaniumyl]propane-1-sulfonate (PNI-SBMA) are fabricated by electrospinning the solution of PNI-SBMA blended with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The surfactant-like functionalities in side chains of PNI-SBMA endow the NFMs with outstanding hydrophilicity, and the naphthimide derivatives are sensitive to pH by photoinduced electron transfer effect, which contribute to highly efficient pH fluorescence sensing applications of NFMs. Specifically, the PNI-SBMA/PVA NFM with a ratio of 1:9 (NFM2) shows high sensitivity and good cyclability to pH. This work demonstrates an effective strategy to realize a fluorescent sensor NFM that has a fast and sensitive response to pH, which will benefit its application of pH sensor monitoring in the water treatment process.

Abstract:The development of personal thermal management textile is of great significance to satisfy the individual thermal comfort in an energy saving manner. However, major challenges remain, such as the sacrificed permeability, and limited mechanical durability, hindering long-term wearing comfort and reliability. Herein, a breathable, integrated thermoregulating fibrous membrane combining photo/electrothermal conversion and energy storage/release performance was fabricated for all-weather, on-demand, personal thermal management. We have delicately constructed a hierarchically ordered coaxial fiber structure that assembled functional components together for a versatile platform, through facile coaxial electrospinning followed by polydopamine (PDA) assisted metal deposition techniques. Interestingly, the intermediate PDA layer not only favors homogeneous loading of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), but also facilitates the interfacial bonding of the adjacent metal layer and the phase change fiber substrate for a seamlessly integrated system with improved structural stability and robust electrical performance. As a result, benefiting from the hierarchical coaxial structure of individual fibers and the overall well-preserved porous structure, we have fabricated an highly integrated, breathable, metalized phase change fibrous membrane with admirable heat enthalpy of 101.1 J/g, decent solar heating capability (up to 63.2 °C at 100 mW/cm 2 ), and low voltage-driven Joule heating performance (up to 76.8 °C at 3.5 V), which exhibited a broad application prospect in next-generation wearable personal thermal management.
