Abstract:With the ambition of solving the challenges of the shortage of fossil fuels and their associated environmental pollution, visible‐light‐driven splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen using semiconductor photocatalysts has emerged as a promising technology to provide environmentally friendly energy vectors. Among the current library of developed photocatalysts, organic conjugated polymers present unique advantages of sufficient light‐absorption efficiency, excellent stability, tunable electronic properties, and economic applicability. As a class of rising photocatalysts, organic conjugated polymers offer high flexibility in tuning the framework of the backbone and porosity to fulfill the requirements for photocatalytic applications. In the past decade, significant progress has been made in visible‐light‐driven water splitting employing organic conjugated polymers. The recent development of the structural design principles of organic conjugated polymers (including linear, crosslinked, and supramolecular self‐assembled polymers) toward efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, and overall water splitting is described, thus providing a comprehensive reference for the field. Finally, current challenges and perspectives are also discussed.

Abstract:Photocatalysts based on semiconducting conjugated polymers have shown great potential in solar-driven water splitting. The synthetic conjugated polymers offer great versability to design photocatalyts with suitable electronic structures for photocatalytic reactions. So far much efforts have been devoted to developing semiconducting conjugated polymers for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. However, conjugated polymers that are able to efficiently split pure water under visible light (>400 nm) via a four-electron pathway have been proved to be challenging. We show that 1,3-diyne-linked conjugated polymer nanosheets obtained by oxidative coupling of terminal alkynes such as 1,3,5-tris-(4-ethynylphenyl)-benzene (TEPB) and 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene (TEB) are possessing suitable band structures for photocatalytic overall water splitting and can act as highly efficient photocatalysts for splitting pure water (pH~7) into stoichiometric amounts of H2 and O2 under visible light irradiation. We also reveal that these conjugated polymers are indeed able to split pure water via first-principles calculations. Using in situ techniques, we could further elucidate the molecular intermediates that are formed during the photocatalytic process, providing strong evidence that the water splitting reaction could occur on the surface of polymer photocatalysts. We believe that our study could provide new insights in design and synthesis of semiconductors that are able to catalyze overall water splitting at neutral pH with sunlight as the only energy input.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers featuring tunable band gaps/positions and tailored active centers, are attractive photoelectrode materials for water splitting. However, their exploration falls far behind their inorganic counterparts. Herein, we demonstrate a molecular engineering strategy for the tailoring aromatic units of conjugated acetylenic polymers from benzene- to thiophene-based. The polarized thiophene-based monomers of conjugated acetylenic polymers can largely extend the light absorption and promote charge separation/transport. The C≡C bonds are activated for catalyzing water reduction. Using on-surface Glaser polycondensation, as-fabricated poly(2,5-diethynylthieno[3,2-b]thiophene) on commercial Cu foam exhibits a record H2 -evolution photocurrent density of 370 μA cm-2 at 0.3 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode among current cocatalyst-free organic photocathodes (1-100 μA cm-2 ). This approach to modulate the optical, charge transfer, and catalytic properties of conjugated polymers paves a critical way toward high-activity organic photoelectrodes.

Abstract:Solar-to-chemical energy conversion for the generation of high-energy chemicals is one of the most viable solutions to the quest for sustainable energy resources. Although long dominated by inorganic semiconductors, organic polymeric photocatalysts offer the advantage of a broad, molecular-level design space of their optoelectronic and surface catalytic properties, owing to their molecularly precise backbone. In this Review, we discuss the fundamental concepts of polymeric photocatalysis and examine different polymeric photocatalysts, including carbon nitrides, conjugated polymers, covalent triazine frameworks and covalent organic frameworks. We analyse the photophysical and physico-chemical concepts that govern the photocatalytic performance of these materials, and derive design principles and possible future research directions in this emerging field of 'soft photocatalysis'.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting (PWS) is a highly promising technique for generating sustainable fuel by using light energy. Significant progress has been made in the development of PWS innovations over recent years. In addition to various water-splitting (WS) systems, the focus has primarily been on one- and two-step-excitation WS systems. These systems utilize singular or composite photocatalysts for WS, which is a simple, feasible, and cost-effective method for efficiently converting prevalent green energy into sustainable H2 energy on a large commercial scale. The proposed principle of charge confinement and transformation should be implemented dynamically by conjugation and stimulation of the photocatalytic process while ensuring there is no unintentional connection at the interface. This study focuses on the fundamentals of overall water splitting (OWS) using single/double-step stimulation and various techniques. It also discusses the current advancements in the development of new light-absorbing materials and provides perspectives and approaches for isolating photoinduced charging. This article explores various aspects of advancement, encompassing both chemical and physical changes, environmental factors, different photocatalyst types, and distinct parameters affecting the PWS. Significant factors for achieving an efficient photocatalytic process include the presence of detrimental conditions, strong light absorption, and the production of nanostructures with a small size. Future research will focus on developing novel materials, investigating potential synthesis techniques, and improving existing high-energy raw materials. The objective of these endeavors is to enhance the efficiency of energy conversion, the absorption of radiation, and the coherence of physiochemical processes.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting is considered one of the most important and appealing approaches for the production of green H2 to address the global energy demand. The utmost possible form of artificial photosynthesis is a two-step photoexcitation known as "Z-scheme", which mimics the natural photosystem. This process solely relies on the effective coupling and suitable band positions of semiconductors (SCs) and redox mediators for the purpose to catalyze the surface chemical reactions and significantly deter the backward reaction. In recent years, the Z-scheme strategies and their key role have been studied progressively through experimental approaches. In addition, theoretical studies based on density functional theory have provided detailed insight into the mechanistic aspects of some breathtakingly complex problems associated with hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. In this context, this critical review gives an overview of the fundamentals of Z-scheme photocatalysis, including both theoretical and experimental advancements in the field of photocatalytic water splitting, and suggests future perspectives.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting using sunlight is a promising technology capable of providing high energy yield without pollutant byproducts. Herein, we review various aspects of this technology including chemical reactions, physiochemical conditions and photocatalyst types such as metal oxides, sulfides, nitrides, nanocomposites, and doped materials followed by recent advances in computational modeling of photoactive materials. As the best-known catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution, TiO₂ is discussed in a separate section, along with its challenges such as the wide band gap, large overpotential for hydrogen evolution, and rapid recombination of produced electron-hole pairs. Various approaches are addressed to overcome these shortcomings, such as doping with different elements, heterojunction catalysts, noble metal deposition, and surface modification. Development of a photocatalytic corrosion resistant, visible light absorbing, defect-tuned material with small particle size is the key to complete the sunlight to hydrogen cycle efficiently. Computational studies have opened new avenues to understand and predict the electronic density of states and band structure of advanced materials and could pave the way for the rational design of efficient photocatalysts for water splitting. Future directions are focused on developing innovative junction architectures, novel synthesis methods and optimizing the existing active materials to enhance charge transfer, visible light absorption, reducing the gas evolution overpotential and maintaining chemical and physical stability.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalytic water splitting to produce H 2 is ideal for converting solar energy into clean hydrogen energy, and the key to achieving solar H 2 production is to develop stable, efficient, and inexpensive photocatalysts. Recently, strategies based on self-assembly organic supramolecular using noncovalent interactions offer the possibility to mimic this functional correlation among molecules to optimize photocatalytic water splitting. As promising building blocks, perylene diimide (PDI) and porphyrins have demonstrated great potential in visible-light photocatalytic H 2 production, because of their electrical, optical, and catalytic properties. From this perspective, we have summarized the recent significant advances in the design and photocatalytic water splitting performance of PDI and porphyrin-based supramolecular materials. Rational strategies are described, such as molecular structure, crystal modification, and interfacial heterostructure. Finally, the ongoing challenges and opportunities for the future development of supramolecular photocatalysts in high-quality nanodevices are also proposed.

Abstract:Since the global energy demand and consumption increased sharply, photocatalytic water splitting becomes a promising solution to provide continuous and sustainable energy resources. However, exploring photocatalysts that could meet energy needs and put into industrial manufacture remains a challenging task. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a class of porous crystalline materials with tailorable structure and ultrahigh surface area, are regarded as an ideal candidate for photocatalysis application. Recently, their peculiar employment in photocatalytic water splitting aroused tremendous interests. Although this topic still in early stage, recent advanced experiments results have certified its potential for future application. This review starts with the fundamentals of photocatalytic water splitting, and subsequently summarizes and exemplifies recent developments of MOFs based- and derived-photocatalysts for water splitting, including water-splitting half reaction and overall water splitting. Particularly, two strategies to enhance photocatalytic performance of MOFs are specific emphasized, namely functional modification and surface or pore decoration. Finally, this review identifies the scarcities of MOFs based- and derived-photocatalysts and proposes pertinent suggestions for further improvement, whilst highlights a green future for photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Various photocatalysts have been developed for photocatalytic water splitting-one of the most important processes that produces dihydrogen as clean energy for fuel cells. The successful achievements for this application are based mainly on transition metal oxides and some metal sulfides/nitrides. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of hybrid functional materials comprising organic backbone tethered infinitively in limitless way by metal-oxide clusters, both of which can be customized accurately at the molecular level for targeted applications, have been able to photocatalytically degrade water. Apart from representing an array of intrinsic structural and physicochemical characteristics, MOFs are well susceptible for various post-synthetic modifications to address specific challenges. Despite years of research in this field and a good number of seminal studies, further efforts should be geared toward the improvement of light absorption and stability of MOFs, which are the principal challenges that should be overcome. This review includes the most recent research that has been committed to MOFs materials for photocatalytic water-splitting applications. It also encompasses a variety of synthetic techniques and post-modifications that have been employed to increase the performance of MOFs. In addition, a brief discussion of the techno-feasibility analysis of water splitting has been offered, extending the conversation to include current challenges and future direction recommendations. The recent advancements of using MOF photocatalysts for water splitting are further described in a way that benchmark achievements and limitations are considered so that the readers can imagine the big picture in this field and pay considerable attention to future solutions.

Abstract:Splitting of water with the help of photocatalysts has gained a strong interest in the scientific community for producing clean energy, thus requiring novel semiconductor materials to achieve high-yield hydrogen production. The emergence of 2D nanoscale materials with remarkable electronic and optical properties has received much attention in this field. Owing to the recent developments in high-end computation and advanced electronic structure theories, first principles studies offer powerful tools to screen photocatalytic systems reliably and efficiently. This review is organized to highlight the essential properties of 2D photocatalysts and the recent advances in the theoretical engineering of 2D materials for the improvement in photocatalytic overall water-splitting. The advancement in the strategies including (i) single-atom catalysts, (ii) defect engineering, (iii) strain engineering, (iv) Janus structures, (v) type-II heterostructures (vi) Z-scheme heterostructures (vii) multilayer configurations (viii) edge-modification in nanoribbons and (ix) the effect of pH in overall water-splitting are summarized to improve the existing problems for a photocatalytic catalytic reaction such as overcoming large overpotential to trigger the water-splitting reactions without using cocatalysts. This review could serve as a bridge between theoretical and experimental research on next-generation 2D photocatalysts.

Abstract:Exploration of high-efficiency stabilization and abundant source-conjugated polymers semiconductor materials with suitable molecular orbital energy levels has always been a hot topic in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) from water splitting. In the recent years, constructing the intramolecular donor–acceptor (D–A)-conjugated architecture copolymers has been proved as one of the most excellent photocatalyst modification tactics for optimizing the PHE properties because of unique advantages, including easy regulate band-gap position, fast transfer charge carrier in the intramolecular architecture, superior sunlight absorption capacity and range, large interfacial areas, and so forth. Therefore, in this minireview, we summarize the latest research progress of D–A architecture semiconductor materials for PHE from water splitting. First, we briefly overview the fundamental description and principles for the construction D–A heterostructures in the photocatalytic system. After that, the application of D–A architecture photocatalyst for PHE reaction over different classes of organic semiconductors have been discussed in detail. At last, the present development prospects and future potential challenges of D–A architecture materials are proposed. We hope this minireview has some parameter values for the further developments of intermolecular special structured organic semiconductor material in the future PHE research.

Abstract:Efficient polymer photocatalysts that mimic natural photosynthesis to generate H2 through the visible‐light‐promoted splitting of water are ideal systems for the conversion of solar energy into usable fuel with high energy density and in an environmentally friendly manner. In this article, we review recent reports on donor–acceptor‐based π‐conjugated polymers as photocatalysts, including conjugated linear polymers, microporous polymers, triazine frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, polymer dots, and other related organic polymers, which show superior photocatalytic activity and robust stability under visible‐light irradiation, for hydrogen production. Moreover, their syntheses and material design strategies, photophysical properties, proposed mechanisms, and applications are systematically summarized. Finally, recent research on and challenges related to organic polymer photocatalysts are discussed. This minireview will help readers to more easily understand the recent advances in and future direction of this field.

Abstract:In the past decades, enormous efforts have been put into visible light–promoted photocatalytic chemical transformations. Among the intensely studied photocatalytic systems, metal‐free, pure organic and heterogeneous photocatalysts based on conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), a class of organic porous materials featuring π‐conjugated backbone and permanent microporosity, draw much attention. The CMP‐based photocatalysts are highly attractive because of their pure organic nature, ease of synthesis, structural diversity, and nontoxicity, as well as low costs. Over the past years, various CMPs have been synthesized for a broad range of photocatalytic applications. Herein, the aim is to deliver an updated summary of this field with the focus on crucial factors, which largely affect the catalytic performance of CMPs. To name a few, band structure, charge separation and transfer, and morphology are described combined with specific energy‐ and organosynthesis‐related applications such as water splitting, CO2 reduction, organic photoredox reactions, etc.

Abstract:Photocatalysis with stable, efficient and inexpensive metal-free catalysts is one of the most promising options for non-polluting energy production. This review article covers the state-of-the-art development of various effective metal-free polymeric photocatalysts with large pi-conjugated units for chemical transformations including water splitting, CO2 and N-2 reduction, organic synthesis and monomer polymerisation. The article starts with the catalytic mechanisms of metal-free photocatalysts. Then a particular focus is on the rational manipulation of pi-conjugation enlargement, charge separation, electronic structures and band structures in the design of metal-free polymeric photocatalysts. Following the design principles, the selection and construction of functional units are discussed, as well as the connecting bonds and dimensions of pi-conjugated polymeric photocatalysts. Finally the hot and emerging applications of metal-free polymeric photocatalysts for photocatalytic chemical transformations are summarized. The strategies provide potential avenues to address the challenges of catalyst activity, selectivity and stability in the further development of highly effective metal-free polymeric photocatalysts.

Abstract:AbstractPhotocatalytic water splitting and carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction provide promising solutions to global energy and environmental issues. In recent years, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of crystalline porous solids featuring well‐defined and tailorable structures as well as high surface areas, have captured great interest toward photocatalytic water splitting and CO2reduction. In this review, the semiconductor‐like behavior of MOFs is first discussed. We then summarize the recent advances in photocatalytic water splitting and CO2reduction over MOF‐based materials and focus on the unique advantage of MOFs for clarifying the structure‐property relationship in photocatalysis. In addition, some representative characterization techniques have been presented to unveil the photocatalytic kinetics and reaction intermediates in MOF‐based systems. Finally, the challenges, and perspectives for future directions are proposed.
