Abstract:The potential field (gravity & magnetic) data, along with results of available seismic and magnetotelluric studies over the Southern India Shield comprising the Dharwar craton (DC), Southern Granulite Terrane (SGT) and southern part of the Eastern Granulite Mobile Belt (EGMB), were synthesized. The study attempts to elucidate the geometry and continuity of greenstone belts/shear zones, isostatic condition and deeper crustal architecture. We observed a characteristic elevation-gravity relationship for each of the tectonic domains. The greenstone belts of the DC are characterized by N-S to NW-SE trending positive residual gravity anomalies and continue beneath the Cuddapah sediments. The basement of the Cuddapah basin is characterized by NW-SE trending greenstone belts with low-density intrusive rocks. The gravity anomaly suggests occurrence of a high-density rock unit occurs at mid-crustal depth beneath the ‘Closepet granite’ and ‘Chitradurga schist belt’. The potential field signatures of the DC and SGT are distinctly different. The Cauvery Shear Zone is characterized by positive residual gravity and magnetic anomalies with ∼E-W to ENE-WSW trend that continues further east under sediment covers of the east coast. The residual gravity signatures and horizontal gravity gradient signatures suggest that the orogenic systems encompassing the Cauvery Shear Zone and the eastern part of the EGMB may be a part of a common structural belt or tectonic regime associated with the assembly of the Gondwana supercontinent. The potential field modelling reveals the presence of a thick, high-density material resting over the base of the crust in the entire stretch of the east-coast of India.

Abstract:The Singhbhum craton is among the five Archean cratons of Peninsular India that preserves some of the oldest continental nuclei. In this work, we present a new and complete Bouguer gravity map of this craton with insights into its deep crust-mantle structure, lithospheric thickness and density variations beneath this craton. The conspicuous presence of high-order residual gravity low anomalies, together with low estimated densities, suggests voluminous presence of Singhbhum granitic batholiths that built the dominant crustal architecture. The isolated residual gravity highs correspond to the mafic and ultramafic volcanic suites like, Dhanjori, Simlipal and Dalma, while the relatively low gravity anomalies observed over the western volcanic suites like Malangtoli, Jagannathpur and Ongarbira, indicate their relatively felsic nature. The estimated lithospheric thickness of about similar to 130 km below the granitic batholithic region, and about 112 km beneath the Precambrian volcanic terranes, together with low effective elastic thickness (T-e,) of only about 31 km, suggest a thin and weak lithosphere. The craton witnessed extensive lithospheric destruction with the removal of nearly 100-150 km of the cratonic root. The decratonization may be linked to subduction during the Paleo-Mesoproterozoic period, together with mantle plumes at different times, suggesting a combined mechanical, thermal and chemical erosion of the cratonic keel.

Abstract:The Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains (GSMs) in the interior East Antarctic Craton are entirely buried under the massive East Antarctic ice sheet, with a ~50–60 km thick crust and ~200 km thick lithosphere, but little is known of the crustal structure and uplift mechanism. Here, we use airborne gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies for characteristic analysis and inverse calculations. The gravity and magnetic images show three distinct geophysical domains. Based on the gravity anomalies, a dense lower crustal root is modelled to underlie the GSMs, which may have formed by underplating during the continental collision of Antarctica and India. The high frequency linear magnetic characteristics parallel to the suture zone suggest that the upper crustal architecture is dominated by thrusts, consisting of a large transpressional fault system with a trailing contractional imbricate fan. A 2D model along the seismic profile is created to investigate the crustal architecture of the GSMs with the aid of depth to magnetic source estimates. Combined with the calculated crustal geometry and physical properties and the geological background of East Antarctica, a new evolutionary model is proposed, suggesting that the GSMs are underlain by part of a Pan-African age advancing accretionary orogen superimposed on Precambrian basement.
Crustal structure of Northeast India as evidenced by receiver function imaging: tectonic and geodynamic implications

Abstract:Crustal structure beneath the major tectonic domains comprising northeast India is investigated using receiver function analyses of teleseismic earthquakes recorded at 19 new broadband seismic stations, combined with Moho depth and Poisson's ratio information from 14 previous studies. Velocity structure inverted from receiver functions are combined with results from H–k stacking and validated using forward modeling of gravity data. The Shillong Plateau in the western Brahmaputra River Valley, later representing the Himalayan foredeep, is inferred to have a thin (33–35 km) felsic crust. A dome-shaped, 5-km-thick high-velocity layer in the upper crust likely accounts for positive Bouguer anomaly over the plateau. The Upper Assam basin in the eastern Brahmaputra River Valley is marked by pronounced gravity low, high Poisson's ratio, and a pair of low- and high-velocity layers in the crust. This narrow segment demarcates the crust of oceanic affinity extending from the Indo-Burmese Wedge. Further to the south of Dauki fault, under the ~ 10-km-thick wedge, a two-layered crust comprising 5–15-km-thick delta sediments overlying a ~ 20-km-thick basement of oceanic affinity extends from Bay of Bengal to the Churachandrapur-Mao Fault, where the deep basement subducts upon collision with the Burmese micro-plate. East of the collision boundary, the overriding Burmese micro-plate having a thin crust of ~ 30 km, including ~ 15-km-thick low-velocity sediments, is imaged beneath Central Myanmar Basin. The findings shed new light on the tectonic reactivation of the different domains of northeast India upon collision with the Himalaya to the north and Burmese micro-plate to the east.

Abstract:The construction and destruction of continents, cratons and supercontinents on the globe involved multiple events of plume, rifting, subduction-accretion, and collision through the long history of evolution of our planet. Archean cratons preserve the records of continent building in the Early Earth and understanding their lithospheric architecture is fundamental to building geodynamic models. The Dharwar craton in southern India is among the major cratons on the globe. Recent geological and geochronological studies indicate that the craton formed through the assembly of a number of micro-blocks, although the terrane boundaries and lithospheric structure have not been well-defined. Here, we analyze satellite gravity data, covering the entire Dharwar craton and its surrounding regions, with a view to understand the regional lithospheric architecture and the geodynamic evolution. Our results on the residual gravity field, based on finite element approach, can clearly demarcate the boundaries of the major geotectonic units in the Dharwar craton and surrounding regions. We identify the presence of a conspicuous residual gravity low (-55 mGal) that runs north-south for about 700 km, paralleling the western margin of the Dharwar craton. This gravity low passes through the Chitradurga schist belt and covers the Koyna seismogenic region in the north to Coimbatore in the south. The gravity patterns observed over this region, might suggest a deep-seated paleo- rift zone, which we term as 'Koyna-Coimbatore rift'. The prominent gravity low associated with this rift structure, can be explained by the presence of a 70 km thick low velocity/low density zone (LVZ) in subcrustal lithospheric mantle, suggesting asthenospheric flow into the upper mantle. The Western Dharwar Craton (WDC) might extend further north encompassing the Koyna-Warna seismic zone. Another major finding from this study is delineation of the Central Dharwar Cratonic (CDC) block between the Chitradurga shear zone and the Kolar greenstone belt, which is characterized by a prominent residual gravity high zone (+20 mGal), coinciding with the exposures of the Closepet granitoids and their equivalents, possibly marking a collisional suture between two microblocks. The 21/2D residual gravity modeling across an E-W profile, which cuts all the major geotectonic features of WDC, CDC and Eastern Dharwar Craton (EDC), reveals popping-up of the CDC terrane, below which Moho has upwarped to a depth of 36 km and the lithosphere is considerably thinner at about 120 km, compared to 48 km and 175 km respectively in the WDC. This feature corresponds to lithospheric destruction of almost 100-120 km below the Dharwar craton, with magma underplating. On the eastern side of the craton, the positive residual gravity contours that correspond to the Eastern Ghats Belt rocks, take a sharp turn into the adjacent offshore region northeast of Ongole, and continue further south, until the granulite terrane north of Chennai, indicating the absence of the Eastern Ghats Belt rocks east of Cuddapah Basin. Our gravity model is able to demarcate three collisional boundaries between (i) WDC and CDC, (ii) CDC and Cuddapah Basin, and (iii) Nellore Schist Belt and adjoining east coast terrane. The extensive lithospheric destruction with removal of nearly 100 km of the cratonic root is correlated to prolonged subduction during Paleo-Neoproterozoic, together with mantle plumes at different times playing a subordinate role, thus indicating combined mechanical, thermal and chemical erosion. Abstract:The Manabhum structural high, situated on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River in the foreland part of the Upper Assam basin, is characterised by an elongated NNW-SSE direction of the fold axis. This study utilises seismic and satellite gravity data to model subsurface geological cross-sections across the Manabhum structure, providing insights into the presence of high-density material at the basement level, supported by the distribution of ophiolites at varying depths. The Manabhum, a compressional structure controlled by the complex folding involved in the Mishmi Hills and Naga Schuppen belt, subjected to compression at different stages, presents an excellent opportunity to understand subduction orogeny involving the collision between the Indian plate and the Tethys oceanic lithosphere subducting beneath the Myanmar continental lithosphere.

Abstract:The stretched structure and heterogeneity of the crust of the Nansha Block, the southern continental margin of the South China Sea (SCS), are not well understood. We used published ocean bottom seismic (OBS)/multichannel reflection seismic (MCS) profiles across the Nansha Block to establish five two-dimensional crustal structure models. Using gravity modelling with magnetic anomaly inversion, we obtained the distribution of density and local magnetic susceptibility of the crust. The models show that the distribution of density and thickness of the upper crust in the Nansha Block is uneven, and the thick upper crust is prevalent in the regions close to the continent-ocean transition (COT) showing different characteristics. The interpreted Mesozoic granite blocks and Precambrian rigid basement reflects the heterogeneity in the material composition of the SCS continental margin. Based on the thinning styles of different crustal layers, we suggest that the Nansha Block has a three-layer thinning pattern. The uppermost pre-rift layer was deformed via brittle fractures, the upper crust was sheared by discrete shear zones, and the lower crust experienced ductile deformation. The inherited pre-rift thermal regime, mechanical state, and material composition of the SCS continental margin affected the extensional structure of the crust.
Crustal structure and tectonic evolution of the Pranhita-Godavari Rift: A comprehensive study using edge enhancement techniques and 2D gravity modeling

Abstract:The Pranhita-Godavari Rift basin is a significant tectonic feature in peninsular India. The Bouguer gravity anomaly digital grids from the gravity map of India (after NGRI-GSI, 2006 ) were analyzed to present a detailed discussion of the Pranhita-Godavari rift basin's crustal structure and contribute to understanding its regional geology (i.e., Sediment thickness, depth of the basement, Conrad, and Moho) and tectonics. Using advanced techniques like the horizontal gradient method (HGM), first vertical derivative (FVD), and tilt derivative (TDR), we successfully mapped the regional tectonic features. The identified key lineaments and faults have trends primarily in NW-SE, WNW-ESE, NNE-SSW to N-S, and NE-SW directions.The depth of the Moho, Conrad, and basement was computed using 2D gravity modeling. The modeling reveals significant findings, including substantial crustal thickening within the rift, with Moho depths ranging from 38.6 km to 41 km, indicating considerable tectonic subsidence and sediment accumulation. Conrad discontinuity depths vary between 18 km and 26 km, reflecting complex crustal deformation associated with rifting processes. Basement depths range from 3.5 km to 6.2 km; the Alluvium, Barakar, Sullavai, and Pakhal sediments are deposited over the Archean basement, highlighting differential subsidence within the rift compared to adjacent cratonic regions. Additionally, several major and newly observed faults were mapped using 3D Euler deconvolution and 2D gravity modeling. The Ahiri-Tippapuram, Godavari Valley, Kinnerasani Godavari, Koddam, and Kolleru Lake faults were identified, extending to the Moho with significant downthrows, indicating varied tectonic activity. These findings provide valuable insights into the tectonic evolution and structural dynamics of the PGR, offering a deeper understanding of rift-related processes and aiding future research in the region.

Tracing the Proterozoic continental collision in NW India: a geophysical approach

Abstract:The 800?km-long AravalliDelhi Fold Belt (ADFB) in the Aravalli Mountains of Rajasthan defines the largest tectonic feature in the northwestern (NW) Indian shield, situated between the late Proterozoic Marwar Basin in the west and the Vindhyan Basin in the east. The final collision between the Aravalli and Delhi domains defining ocean closure and continental amalgamation is critical in understanding the culmination of the Proterozoic Wilson Cycle in NW India. We present for the first time a regional three-dimensional (3-D) gravity model to evaluate the architecture of the continental collision signature of this region. The deep seismic reflection data along a 400?km-long profile across the ADFB highlights two sets of reflection bands with opposite dips. The prominent west-dipping reflections observed in the central domain, towards the western margin of the Mangalwar Complex could be related to the Palaeoproterozoic subduction of an oceanic lithosphere, and suggest a clear northwestward subduction polarity. The data showing gravity highs, the high elevation features, and the models proposed in the present study, together with the presence of high-density bodies in the deep crust, is interpreted as a signature of magmatic underplating and/or mafic-ultramafic intrusives. The high elevations and corresponding high-density anomalies at depth can also be explained by domal uplift, following the extrusion of metamorphic orogens into the mid crust, as well as the presence of eclogitized material at depth associated with the subductioncollision tectonics and continental amalgamation. Shallow crustal imaging beneath NW Indian terrane from teleseismic P-wave coda using a Bayesian approach

Abstract:Deciphering the crustal architecture of the Cretaceous Barmer-Sanchore Basin (BSB) and Neoproterozoic provinces in the NW Indian Shield presents significant challenges due to extensive sediment deposition and widespread felsic igneous rocks. To address such intricacies, we employ a transdimensional Bayesian joint inversion of teleseismic P-wave polarizations and receiver functions to resolve the detailed structure of the upper 10 km of crust beneath 29 seismic stations deployed in the study area. The new data is analyzed separately within each of the three different backazimuthal groups to identify any strong variations in the shallow subsurface and derive a more robust, averaged model for every station site. Our resulting 1-D models reveal heterogeneous sediment cover in the BSB and Marwar Basin (MB), with respective thicknesses ranging from ~1.3–5.5 km and 1–1.5 km. The remarkably low shear-wave velocities (Vs 2.3) are observed in the BSB and adjacent areas, relating to highly unconsolidated Quaternary-Tertiary deposits. The MB is imaged with 0.3–0.5 km of uncompacted sediments that overlay 0.5–1 km thick Marwar Supergroup sequence. The Erinpura Granites (EG) and Malani Igneous Province (MIP) are characterized by a variably thick sediment blanket, typically ranging within 1 km in thickness. The Vs of the sediments in these regions exceeds 2.4 km/s that possibly correspond to Mesozoic and older sediments. The basement beneath EG exhibits Vs faster than 3.4 km/s, consistent with moderately metamorphosed granites. In the MIP, the basement is characterized by non-uniform shear velocities, suggesting the influence of intrusions linked to magmatic episodes in NW India.

Abstract:The north-central region of the Indian subcontinent, which lies close to the Indo-Eurasian convergence zone, is concealed by similar to 66 Ma Deccan volcanics and thick Proterozoic-Tertiary sedimentation, and as such its sub-surface structural configuration is not well understood. In the present study, we analyse high-resolution satellite gravity data over this region in order to probe deep structural fabric of the major geotectonic blocks and associated sedimentary sequences. The residual gravity field, deduced using Finite Element Method, clearly demarcates boundaries of the major geotectonic units of this region, which remained unknown. Our study indicates that the extent of the Bundelkhand cratonic segment is much larger than hitherto known, which extends from the eastern margin of Aravalli-Delhi Fold Belt to almost central part of the Indo Gangetic Plain. Similarly, Shillong Plateau located in northeastern part of India, characterized by a broad high-order positive residual gravity anomaly closure, extends between 86 degrees E to 94 degrees E, far beyond its currently known extent. Importantly, this massif is undergoing in-land rifting due to the regional neotectonic activities associated with Indo-Eurasia convergence and the compressive forces generated between India and Indo-Burmese collision zone. We modelled the gravity anomalies along four N-S profiles across the Narmada-Son Lineament (NSL), which clearly reveal that the Vindhyan sediments, whose extent were considered to be limited to the north of NSL only, was found to be extending further south across this lineament. In addition, a prominent ENE-WSW high-density ridge structure, paralleling the Himalayan arc, is also identified, which is also possibly formed due to N-S stresses, generated by the collision between Indian and Eurasian plates during early Tertiary period.
Evidence of lithosphere erosion in the Eastern Indian shield from multi-scale potential field modelling: geodynamic implications

Abstract:The Precambrian terranes of the Eastern Indian Shield (EIS) comprise the Bundelkhand, Singhbhum, and Bastar cratons with intervening Proterozoic mobile belts such as Central Indian Tectonic Zone, Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt, Singhbhum Mobile Belt and Chotanagpur Granite Gneissic Complex; and the Proterozoic Mahanadi Rift, Chhattisgarh and Vindhyan Basins, with significant coverage of Indo-Gangetic Plain sediments in the northern part. This study presents the results of a seismically well-constrained 2-D multi-scale potential field modelling to delineate the lithosphere structure across different Precambrian terranes of the EIS. The joint interpretation of the potential field data reveals that (i) the mobile belts are bounded by the deep crustal faults with denser crust, (ii) presence of thick underplated crust below Singhbhum Craton, Singhbhum Mobile Belt, Chotanagpur Granite Gneissic Complex and the surrounding rift basin, (iii) localised Moho upwarp at a depth of ~ 36–37 km below the Proterozoic basins, and (iv) the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Boundary (LAB) varying between 90 and 200 km below the EIS region. The distinct crustal structure and deeper LAB (130–200 km) below the mobile belts suggest the Proterozoic amalgamation and lithosphere reworking. Below the Singhbhum Craton, the LAB is observed at a depth of ~ 145–155 km, which is comparatively thinner than other cratonic areas elsewhere. The observed crustal underplating and the thinner LAB below the Singhbhum Craton indicate that the lithospheric erosion and magmatic upwelling was caused by the major Paleo-Mesoproterozoic and Early-Cretaceous large igneous province events.

Tectonic Framework of Southern Bastar Craton, Central India: a Study Based on Different Spatial Information Data Sets

Abstract:We present here a regional tectonic fabric analysis of the southern margin of the Bastar Craton, Central India, obtained from different spatial data sets that include Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM), Landsat ETM+ (Enhanced Thematic Mapper) and IRS (Indian Remote sensing Satellite) P6‐LISS3, integrated with available geological information, as well as field and microscopic observations. The southern margin of the Bastar Craton exhibits large‐scale structures, such as regional‐scale folds, major shear zones and associated tectonic fabric affected by strong brittle–ductile deformation. The deformational features are related to large‐scale thrusting, regional compression, and episodic igneous activity during the Precambrian, and display a major tectonic control on magmatism and the evolution of a shear zone system. The NW–SE to E–W and NE–SW trending brittle to ductile shear zones traversing the craton display both dextral as well as sinistral displacements. Well‐developed kinematic indicators include, sheared quartz veins, tension gashes, rotated porphyroblasts, S–C fabrics, pinch‐and‐swell structures, sigmoidal foliations and riedel fractures that are well preserved in the basement Sukma–Bengpal supracrustals, as well as in the younger granitoids of the Dongargarh Supergroup. Large‐scale well‐developed NW–SE trending isoclinal folding in the basement gneisses and major folding in mafic intrusions in the south‐western margin and tight, upright doubly‐plunging large‐scale folds in the eastern margins of the craton represent two major tectonic events. These events can be correlated to large‐scale thrusts and suggest an initial N–S compression of the craton followed by E–W thrusting at different intervals during the tectonic evolution of the craton. The occurrence of several NW–SE trending mafic dykes parallel to the shear zones indicate that regional‐scale tensile stresses were operating during the Proterozoic, associated with a possible continental rift environment in the centre of the craton. The structural pattern obtained, together with the structures mapped with the coherence of remote sensing images, give significant information and an opportunity to reconstruct the timing, style of deformation and its kinematics in the southern part of the Bastar Craton and provide important constraints on the kinematics of the shear zone system and evolution of the craton. Abstract:The Cauvery suture zone (CSZ) in southern India has witnessed multiple deformations associated with multiple subduction-collision history, with incorporation of the related accretionary belts sequentially into the southern continental margin of the Archaean Dharwar craton since Neoarchean to Neoproterozoic. The accreted tectonic elements include suprasubduction complexes of arc magmatic sequences, high-grade supracrustals, thrust duplexes, ophiolites, and younger intrusions that are dispersed along the suture. The intra-oceanic Neoarchean-Neoproterozoic arc assemblages are well exposed in the form of tectonic m langes dominantly towards the eastern sector of the CSZ and are typically subjected to complex and multiple deformation events. Multi-scale analysis of structural elements with detailed geological mapping of the sub-regions and their structural cross sections, geochemical and geochronological data and integrated geophysical observations suggest that the CSZ is an important zone that preserves the imprints of multiple cycles of Precambrian plate tectonic regimes. Abstract:Three-dimensional geological mapping in the complicated orogenic belts is still in the testing stage due to inadequate geophysical and drill-hole data in the region.In this paper,we propose a method of three-dimensional geological modelling by using the measured natural profiles and the geophysical profiles under the constraints of detailed surface geological investigation data and the geology-geophysics-drilling data.The modelling reliability is evaluated based on the accuracy of the data and the spatial resolution.The surface structures are constrained by the surface geological information,including the attitudes,strati-graphic sequence and thickness,fold morphology,fault feature,and the local and regional conceptual geological models.The deep geological structures are mainly based on the geophysical profile data,in combination with proper drilling data which act as not only a test of the reliability of the geophysical interpretation but also an enhancement of the model.This paper takes the three-dimensional geological mapping of the Houshan area in Karamay as an example and discusses the detailed procedure in re-alizing the above-mentioned scheme,which shows both high efficiency and operability.

Abstract:Three-dimensional geological mapping is a pioneering job in frontiers without much experience.It is far more challenging to work out three-dimensional geological structure in a square area with certain scale for complex orogenic and metallogenic belts,where geophysical and drilling data are relatively limited.In this paper,we put forward a framework of the three-dimensional geological map-ping and visualization for bedrocks of orogenic belts based on our three-dimensional geological mapping practice in the northwest Kara-may,western Junggar.We emphasize that the basic data involved in visual modeling for a certain square area and scale are primarily based on the network of systematic surface geological sections and then the extension for the deep geological bodies which are based on geological-geophysical-drilling united constraints.With the combination of surface geological sections and geophysical/drilling data, three-climension geological texture from surface to certain depths at a certain confidence level can be traced.That is to say that three-dimensional numerical models of geological structures can be constructed by utilizing the rich data of classical “surface regional geological mapping”with the combination of geophysical/drilling data.
Subsurface structural trends in Central-Western India: Inferences from magnetotelluric data using the complex MT apparent resistivity tensor

Abstract:The central-western part of the Indian subcontinent exhibits significant geological diversity and possesses a rich record of different tectonothermal events in the earth's evolutionary history, spanning from the Archean to the present. Precambrian geology in the region is mostly obscured by Cretaceous-Tertiary/Paleocene volcanic eruptions and Proterozoic to Quaternary/recent sedimentary cover. Magnetotelluric (MT) impedance and tipper responses from 146 stations, covering central-western India in a grid fashion with a spacing of ∼55 km, were analyzed to evaluate the subsurface structural trends, dimensionalities, and qualitative characteristics of the electric lithosphere in the region. An advanced Complex Apparent Resistivity Tensor (CART) approach, along with the popular Phase Tensor (PT) approach and induction arrows are utilized to achieve the above goals. The analysis revealed a high degree of 3D induction effects in the data at almost every station and period. The directionality information retrieved from the tensor properties showed that the structural trends in the deep crust and upper mantle of the major geologic domains correlate with the known surface tectonic trend of the respective geologic domain. This study provides vital evidence to support the suspected bifurcation of the Precambrian Aravalli-Delhi Mobile Belt (ADMB) tectonic trend and its extensions into neighboring Kutch, Saurashtra, and Central Indian Tectonic Zone (CITZ) domains. The analysis results indicate a lithospheric scale enhanced conductivity beneath the Malwa plateau, which marks the first major phase of the Reunion mantle plume eruption in India. A critical finding of this study is that the Resistivity Phase Tensor better defines the subsurface resistivity structure and provides much clearer structural information than the conventional Phase Tensor.

Abstract:Extension tectonics responsible for intracratonic rift basin formation are often the consequences of active or passive tectonic regimes. The present work puts forth a plume-related rifting mechanism for the creation and evolution of two Proterozoic sedimentary basins outlining the Bundelkhand Craton, namely the Bijawar and Vindhyan basins. Using global gravity data, a regional-scale study is performed over the region encompassing the southern boundary of the Bundelkhand Craton consisting of the Bijawar Basin, Vindhyan Basin, and Deccan basalt outcrops. The gravity highs in the central part of the complete Bouguer anomaly and the upward-continued regional anomaly, derived from global gravity grid data, suggest that the Vindhyan sedimentary basin overlies a deeper high-density crustal source. The deepest interface as obtained from the radially averaged power spectrum analysis is observed to occur at a depth of ∼30.3 km, indicating that the sources responsible for the observed gravity signatures occur at larger depths. The 3D inversion of complete Bouguer anomaly data based on Parker–Oldenburg's algorithm revealed the Moho depth of ∼32 km below the Vindhyan Basin, i.e., south of the craton. The 2D crustal models along two selected profiles showcase a thick underplated layer with a maximum thickness of ∼12 km beneath the southern part of the Bundelkhand Craton. The inferred large E–W-trending underplating and deciphered shallower Moho beneath the regions south of the exposed Bundelkhand Craton point to crustal thinning compensated for magmatic emplacement due to a Paleoproterozoic plume activity below the craton margin.

Abstract:Abstract 3D forward gravity modeling combined with receiver function (RF) analysis characterizes the crustal structures of the southern part of the Mongolian collage. The seismic signals of the 48 stations of the MOBAL2003 and the IRIS‐PASSCAL experiments were analyzed to get the RFs. This analysis revealed a significant difference between the crustal structures of the Hangay dome and the tectonic zones in the south. In addition, seismic stations south of the Hangay dome display significant signals related to the occurrence of a low‐velocity zone at lower crustal level confirmed by the gravity anomalies. Finally, these seismic analysis inputs, the boundaries, the lithologies, and the density values from rock samples of the different tectonic zones constitute the starting points from the 3D forward gravity modeling. The resulting crustal density model indicates: (a) the likely absence of a Precambrian basement block beneath the Hangay dome, (b) an alternation of two low‐velocity/low‐density zones (LVLDZs) with high‐density zones in the Baydrag microcontinent interpreted as fragments of early Tonian plutons, (c) the occurrence of an LVLDZ at the lower crustal level beneath the Lake zone, the Mongol‐Altai Accretionary Wedge, and the Trans‐Altai Zone. Therefore, the combination of the seismic RF with gravity analysis and modeling reveals new crustal structures of the Mongolian collage and enhances the occurrence and the extent of an LVLDZ at lower crustal level. These LVLDZ may demonstrate the existence of the relamination of a hydrous material in southern Mongolian collage.
