Abstract:As feed accounts for a significant proportion of a farm’s expenditure, animal nutrition is one of the key profit determinants. Attributed to the size-dependent market value, enhancing shrimps' growth is essential to maximize profit. Despite not being the best option, antibiotics are often used as growth-promoting agents in farming. Although this trend is less explicit in aquaculture, increasing production yield is paramount, especially when intensive aquafarming compromises animal growth and increases disease prevalence. However, the environmental and clinical pitfalls of indiscriminate antibiotic usage are surfacing. Fortunately, increasing evidence demonstrated probiotics as a safer, more sustainable, and environmental-friendly substitute for antibiotics. Nonetheless, most studies are observational, and the growth-promotion mechanisms of these agents are yet to be elucidated. In this light, this review aims to decipher the growth promotion mechanisms of probiotics in shrimps based on the primary works conducted. Evidently, probiotic treatment modulates the gut microbiome composition. The growth promotion effect of probiotics is partly mediated through the production of bioactive compounds such as short-chain fatty acids, vitamins, and polyamines. Besides, elevated digestive enzyme activities following the introduction of probiotics may help enhance digestibility and utilization. Histological changes at the hepatopancreas and intestine were evident. Furthermore, probiotics may reinforce the protective mechanisms in the gut and strengthen immune function. Treated shrimps demonstrate better appetite and exhibit superior metabolic and growth-related genes profile. Contrasting these recognized mechanisms with antibiotics helps construct the initial framework for designing high-quality probiotics for growth enhancement in farmed animals.

Abstract:In recent years, the advancement and greater magnitude of products, which led to the intensification in shrimp aquaculture is the result of utilization of modern tools and synchronization with other fields of science like microbiology and biotechnology. This intensification led to the elevation of disorders such as the development of several diseases and complications associated with biofouling. The use of antibiotics in aquaculture is discouraged due to their certain hazardous paraphernalia. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in exploring alternative strategies, with probiotics and prebiotics emerging as environmentally friendly substitutes for antibiotic treatments in shrimp aquaculture. This review highlighted the results of probiotics and prebiotics administration in the improvement of water quality, enhancement of growth and survival rates, stress resistance, health status and disease resistance, modulation of enteric microbiota and immunomodulation of different shrimp species. Additionally, the study sheds light on the comprehensive role of prebiotics and probiotics in elucidating the mechanistic framework, contributing to a deeper understanding of shrimp physiology and immunology. Besides their role in growth and development of shrimp aquaculture, the eco-friendly behavior of prebiotics and probiotics have made them ideal to control pollution in aquaculture systems. This comprehensive exploration of prebiotics and probiotics aims to address gaps in our understanding, including the economic aspects of shrimp aquaculture in terms of benefit-cost ratio, and areas worthy of further investigation by drawing insights from previous studies on different shrimp species. Ultimately, this commentary seeks to contribute to the evolving body of knowledge surrounding prebiotics and probiotics, offering valuable perspectives that extend beyond the ecological dimensions of shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract:Marine shrimp farming, mainly Penaeus monodon and Litopenaeus vannamei, is an important component of the aquaculture industry. Marine shrimp farming helps produce a protein source for humans, provides job opportunities, and generates lucrative profits for investors. Intensification farming practices can lead to poor water quality, stress, and malnutrition among the farmed marine shrimp, resulting in disease outbreaks and poor production, impeding the development of marine shrimp farming. Antibiotics are the common short-term solution to treat diseases in marine shrimp farming. Moreover, the negative impacts of using antibiotics on public health and the environment erode consumer confidence in aquaculture products. Recently, research on using phytobiotics as a prophylactic agent in aquaculture has become a hot topic. Various phytobiotics have been explored to reveal their beneficial effects on aquaculture species. In this review paper, the sources and modes of action of phytobiotics are presented. The roles of phytobiotics in improving growth performance, increasing antioxidant capacity, enhancing the immune system, stimulating disease resistance, and mitigating stress due to abiotic factors in marine shrimp culture are recapitulated and discussed.

Abstract:With the growing world population, the demand for food has increased, leading to excessive and intensive breeding and cultivation of fisheries, simultaneously exacerbating the risk of disease. Recently, shrimp producers have faced major losses of stocks due to the prevalence of periodical diseases and inappropriate use of antibiotics for disease prevention and treatment, leading to bacterial resistance in shrimp, along with imposing health hazards on human consumers. Strict regulations have been placed to ban or reduce the use of prophylactic antibiotics to lessen their detrimental effects on aquatic life. Dietary and water supplements have been used as substitutes, among which probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics have been the most beneficial for controlling or treating bacterial, viral, and parasitic diseases in shrimp. The present analysis addresses the issues and current progress in the administration of pro-, pre-, and synbiotics as disease controlling agents in the field of shrimp farming. Furthermore, the benefits of pro-, pre-, and synbiotics and their mechanism of action have been identified such as; strengthening of immune responses, growth of antibacterial agents, alteration in gut microflora, competition for nutrients and binding sites, and enzymes related activities. Overall, this study aims to depict the antagonistic action of these supplements against a variety of pathogens and their mode of action to counter diseases and benefit shrimp species.

Abstract:Probiotics administration in aquafeed is known to increase feed consumption and absorption due to their capacity to release a wide range of digestive enzymes and nutrients which can participate in digestion process and feed utilization, along with the absorption of diet components led to an increase in host's health and well‐being. Furthermore, probiotics improve gut maturation, prevention of intestinal disorders, pre‐digestion of anti‐nutrient factors found in the feed ingredients, gut microbiota, disease resistance against pathogens, and metabolism.The beneficial immune effects of probiotics are well established in finfish. However, in comparison, similar studies are less abundant in the shellfish. In this review, the discussions will mainly focus on studies reported the last two years. In recent studies, native probiotic bacteria were isolated and fed back to their hosts. Although beneficial effects were demonstrated, some studies showed adverse effects when treated with a high concentration. This adverse effect may be due to the imbalance of the gut microbiota caused by the replenished commensal probiotics.The probiotic effects revealed greatest effect on the shrimp digestive system particularly in the larval and early post‐larval stages, and probiotics stimulate the production of endogenous enzymes in shrimp and contribute with improved the enzyme activities in the gut, as well as disease resistance.

Abstract:Shrimp aquaculture has rapidly developed into a significant industry worldwide, providing not only financial gain and high-quality food but also tens of thousands of trained and competent workers. Frequent diseases are now regarded as a significant risk factor for shrimp aquaculture, as they have the potential to significantly reduce shrimp production and result in economic losses. Over the years various traditional methods including the use of antibiotics have been followed to control diseases yet unsuccessful. Probiotic is considered potential supplements for shrimps during farming, they may also act beneficially as disease control and increased production. Probiotics are described as a live microbial supplement that benefits the host by modifying the microbial population associated with the host and its ambient. The present state of research about probiotics demonstrates notable impacts on the immune defences of the host's gastrointestinal system, which play a crucial role in safeguarding against diseases and managing inflammation inside the digestive tract. In the past ten years, many studies on probiotics have been published. However, there is a lack of information about the processes by which probiotics exert their effects in aquaculture systems, with only limited elucidations being offered. This study explores the variety of procedures behind the positive effects of probiotics in shrimp culture. These mechanisms include the augmentation of the immune system, control of growth, antagonistic action against pathogens, competitive exclusion, and modification of the gut microbiota. Mechanisms involved in the probiotic mode of action are mostly interlinked. This provides a greater understanding of the importance of probiotics in shrimp culture as an environmentally friendly practice.

Abstract:Probiotics are a helpful alternative that can be used to increase aquaculture output in a sustainable way. For probiotics to have the desired effects when applied to a certain aquaculture species, first, the proper strain and dosage must be chosen. The second, probiotics can be given intravenously, orally, or as feed additives, the last of which is frequently employed in aquaculture. Probiotics application in aquaculture production provides several advantages, including enhanced stress tolerance, enhanced disease resistance, enhanced immunological defence against infections, enhanced disease performance, and enhanced feed utilization. To improve the economic performance of the aquaculture species, probiotics can be used at the farm level. This review seeks to assess the current apprehension of probiotics as fish-feed supplements in aquaculture, types of probiotics, administration methods, mechanism of action, benefits, and effects. It also constrains the approach of contribution probiotics application to the aquaculture activities which enhance the fish health and growth based on the results of experimental studies.

Abstract:Vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is an important food commodity of economic benefit due to its high price, low susceptibility to disease, and popularity for consumption. These advantages have led many farmers to cultivate vannamei shrimp. Efforts are underway to improve the aquaculture performance of this species, including the use of probiotics, which are non-pathogenic bacteria that aid in digestion and help fight disease. Probiotics are usually obtained from the intestines of vannamei shrimp or the culture environment. They are low-cost, non-pathogenic, and largely non-toxic source of antibiotics and are able to synthesize various metabolites that have antibacterial functions and applications. Research on probiotic use has primarily been focused on increasing vannamei shrimp aquaculture production. Bacterial species, such as Lactobacillus or Nitrobacter, can be administered orally, by injection, or as a supplement in aquaculture water. Probiotics help to improve survival rate, water quality, immunity, and disease resistance through space competition with disease-causing bacteria, such as Vibrio spp. An increased number of probiotic bacteria suppresses the growth and presence of pathogenic bacteria, which lowers disease susceptibility. In addition, probiotic bacteria also aid digestion by breaking down complex compounds into simpler substances that the body can absorb more easily. This mechanism improves growth performance in terms of weight, length, and feed conversion ratio. This review aimed to provide information regarding contribution of probiotic to improve vannamei shrimp production in aquaculture. Keywords: application, bacteria, farm, microbiome, shrimp.

Abstract:The aquaculture industry is geared toward intensification and successfully meets half of the world's demand for fish protein. The intensive farming system exposes the animal to the risk of disease outbreaks, which has economic consequences. Antibiotics are commonly used for the health management of aquaculture species. However, this has several drawbacks, including the increase in antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria and the entry of antibiotic residues into the human food chain, which is a public health and environmental concern. The potential of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and medicinal herbs as alternatives to antibiotics for the health management of aquaculture species has been investigated in numerous studies. This review discusses the potential use of combinations of probiotics and medicinal herbs as prophylactic agents in aquaculture, along with the definitions, sources, and modes of action. The positive aspects of combining probiotics and medicinal herbs on growth performance, the immune system, and disease resistance of aquaculture species are also highlighted. Overall, this review addresses the potential of combinations of probiotics and medicinal herbs as feed additives for aquaculture species and the key role of these feed additives in improving the welfare of aquaculture species.

Abstract:Pacific white shrimp ( Penaeus vannamei ) is one of the most productive and economically important species globally. However, the development and continuous expansion of the farming scale led to an increase in the risk of disease occurrence in shrimp farming. The application of probiotics as an effective method for controlling diseases in aquaculture has been widely considered. In shrimp farming, several probiotics have been used and shown benefits to the health of the host. To diverse the sources of bacterial species as probiotics in shrimp farming, in this study, we aimed to elucidate the effects of dietary probiotics ( Clostridium butyricum I9 (I9), Clostridium butyricum G15 (G15), or Paraclostridium bifermentans X13) on the growth, immune response and intestinal microbiome of white shrimp. Shrimps were fed with diets containing either phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), I9 (10 7 CFU/g feed), G15 (10 7 CFU/g feed), or X13 (10 7 CFU/g feed) for 30 days and followed by the challenge with Vibrio parahaemolyticus ( Vp ). The results showed that the survival rate, body weight gain, and special growth rate of shrimps in the I9, X13, and G15 groups significantly increased, compared to the PBS. The supplementation of probiotics increased the content of short-chain fatty acids and effectively maintained the normal morphology and structure of the intestinal tract and hepatopancreas. The I9, X13, or G15 groups showed a positive change in the diversity and abundance of gut bacteria. There was a significant up-regulation of CTL, SOD, proPO, Crustin, PEN2-4, and ALF1-3 genes in shrimps in the I9, X13, and G15. Additionally, dietary probiotics significantly increased the survival rate, maintained the intestinal structure, promoted the activities of SOD, AKP, ACP, and T-AOC enzymes, and reduced the level of MDA in shrimps after Vp infection. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of I9, G15, or X13 improved the growth, immunity, and disease resistance of Pacific white shrimp, providing a scientific basis for shrimp farming.

Abstract:Probiotics, live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host, offer an alternative to antibiotics and have become popular among shrimp farmers for use in the regulation of pond water quality, promotion of shrimp growth and the prevention of disease. Most shrimp probiotics are selected for testing based on their ability to competitively exclude pathogens through bacterial antagonism assays, although the mechanisms of pathogen exclusion are rarely investigated. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms of competitive exclusion (interference and exploitation competition) by species screened and subsequently identified as shrimp probiotics based on their ability to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria in vitro . We show that the current methods used to identify potential probiotics preferentially select for interference‐based competitive mechanisms and may overlook the potential of many species to be considered a probiotic. Furthermore, we show that the efficiency of a probiotic in vivo may be improved by considering the suitability of competitive strategies to shrimp farming conditions. We highlight important limitations and future directions for the screening and identification of probiotics in shrimp aquaculture, to aid in the development of effective and sustainable microbial management strategies.

Abstract:The incidence of infections by pathogenic microorganisms, coupled with the experimental manifestation of infections, refers to a regular phenomenon in aquaculture species. A number of environmental changes generally give rise to traumatic scenarios, and activating the transient provocative reactions in the gut normally constitutes a factor to the anatomical and efficient intestinal diseases. These infections have frequently given birth to the momentous economic chaos in aquaculture sector. Putting efforts into resolving this issue, the inclusion of antibiotics in the diets of aquaculture species has been introduced either as growth promoters or the stimulation of the immune system against diseases. Nevertheless, both the fears and discussions of consumers and scientists over the antibiotic-resistant microbes and drug remains in meat have resulted into contentious views concerning the uses of antibiotics. This has resulted into forbidding the use of human antibiotics as growth promotants in the diet of animal since the year 2006 by the European Union; also, subsequent to that, in the year 2013, the United States also initiated a plan for the removal of human antibiotics in the diet as growth promotants. Making use of the prebiotics, synbiotics and probiotics as an alternative has proven as improving not just the growth but also the immunity and maintenance of intestine health of cultured species. They are administered in the feeds of culture species for the purpose of stimulating the good health, safeguarding the intestine against pathogenic microorganisms and reducing the inflammation. In the current investigation, we throw discussion on the present uses, together with the limitations and future directions, the immunomodulatory exploit of probiotics, synbiotics and prebiotics, which triggering directly or enhancing the non-specific immune structure of aquaculture species.

Abstract:White shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) aquaculture faces many disease problems. The use of antibiotics to treat diseases leads to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can endanger human health. To overcome this problem, probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics are eco-friendly solutions that can be used in shrimp aquaculture to improve water quality, growth, survival and disease resistance. This study aimed to determine the effect of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics on growth, survival, and intestinal bacteria in white shrimp (L. vannamei). The experiment was conducted using a laboratory experimental method with a completely randomized design consisted of 4 treatments and 4 replications. (K) Without supplementation of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics in feed; (Pro) Supplementation of probiotics in feed; (Pre) Supplementation of prebiotics in feed; and (Syn) Supplementation of synbiotics in feed. The parameters measured were SGR, FCR, SR, total lactic acid bacteria and vibrio dominance. The data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA with SPSS version 25 and a 95% confidence interval. If the results had a significant effect (P<0,05), Duncan's test was used to determine differences between treatments. The results showed that probiotic and synbiotic treatments gave the best results on SGR, FCR, SR, total lactic acid bacteria and vibrio dominance compared to the control treatment. This study concluded that added probiotics and synbiotics in feed can increase total lactic acid bacteria and reduce the dominance of vibrio in the intestines of white shrimp, as well as increase the growth and survival of white shrimp (L. vannamei).

Abstract:Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing economic activities worldwide; shrimp production by aquaculture is around 70% or more of the total consumed. The development of this activity is inducing great benefits in the production of food and jobs; however, shrimp aquaculture is also generating; (1) ecological imbalance by pelagic species overexploitation to produce fish ingredients, (2) bays contamination by inappropriate waste management and (3) pathogens proliferation by antibiotics abuse. In this sense, a significant number of regulations and legal restrictions have been imposed; thus, aquaculture is no longer considered a profitable activity. Therefore, significant and innovative technologies need to be applied to ensure the sustainability and profitability of this activity. In this sense, probiotic bacteria are being used in aquaculture to improve feed intake, modulate gut microbiota and control pathogen proliferation. This work summarizes the results from researchers who worked extensively to show how probiotic bacteria can improve shrimp aquaculture development.

Abstract:Nutrition demands in aquaculture can be realized through quality aquafeeds as compounded diets that contribute to the growth and health of aquaculture species. Functional additives in feed, notably probiotics, prebiotics, and their admixture synbiotics, have been recently recognized for their biotherapeutic role as immunostimulants capable of conferring disease resistance, stress tolerance, and gastrointestinal health; counteracting the negative effects of anti-nutrients, pathogenic prevalence, and antimicrobials in finfish aquaculture. Formulated diets based on probiotics, prebiotics, and as a supplemental combination for synbiotics can significantly influence fish gut microbiomes, establishing the modalities of microbial dynamics to maximize host-associated benefits. These microbial functional-feed supplements are acclaimed to be biocompatible, biodegradable, and safe for dietary consumption as well as the environment. In fed fish aquaculture, prebiotic appended probiotic diet 'synbiotic' has propounded larger attention for its additional health and nutritional benefits. Synbiotic, prebiotic, and probiotic usage as functional feeds for finfish aquaculture thus provides promising prospects. Developing trends in their intended application are reviewed here forth.
Evaluation of probiotic characteristics and whole genome analysis of Pediococcus pentosaceus MR001 for use as probiotic bacteria in shrimp aquaculture

Abstract:Abstract The development of non-antibiotic and environmentally friendly agents is a key consideration for health management in shrimp aquaculture. In this study, the probiotic potential in shrimp aquaculture of Pediococcus pentosaceus MR001, isolated from Macrobrachium rosenbergii , was investigated by means of feeding trial and genetic characterization. In the feeding trial, dietary supplementation with P. pentosaceus MR001 significantly increased weight gain and digestive enzyme activity ( p < 0.05) in shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei . The intestinal histology showed that shrimp given the probiotic diet had healthier guts than the control group. Also, the immune gene expression and the survival rate in the treatment group were significantly increased when compared with the control group. The genetic characteristics of P. pentosaceus strain MR001 were explored by performing whole-genome sequencing (WGS) using the HiSeq 2500 platform and PacBio system, revealing the complete circular genome of 1,804,896 bp. We also identified 1789 coding genes and subsequently characterized genes related to the biosynthesis of bacteriocins, stress resistance, and bile tolerance. Our findings suggest that insights in the functional and genetic characteristics of P. pentosaceus strain MR001 could provide opportunities for applications of such strain in shrimp diet supplementation.

Abstract:The health of the host is significantly influenced by the gut microbiota. Penaeus vannamei (white shrimp) is one of the most profitable aquaculture species globally. Synbiotics are typically used as a beneficial diet supplement for raising aquaculture species' growth capacities and enhancing immunity against pathogenicity. However, the effects of synbiotics on the white shrimp intestinal microbiota remain poorly understood. In the present study, we targeted the V3–V4 region of 16S rRNA genes to analyze the effects of synbiotics on white shrimp gut microbiota. Dietary synbiotics, having Lactobacillus acidophilus , and Moringa oleifera leaf extract were added to the white shrimps' feed in various proportions in the present study. In total, 490 operational taxonomic units yielding 23 phyla, 41 classes, 94 orders, 151 families, and 250 genera of microorganisms were obtained. The diet containing L. acidophilus at 1 × 10 7 CFU/g and M. oleifera at 2.5 g/kg led to an increase in the relative abundance of beneficial microorganisms through a significant decrease in the α diversity. Moreover, it upregulated several physiological pathways such as carbohydrate metabolism, signal transduction, lipid metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and environmental adaptation, which led to the upregulation of the AMPK, MAPK, P13K-Akt, lysosome, peroxisome, and ferroptosis signaling pathways; this enhanced growth and immunity in white shrimp. Whether a single species or a combination of different microorganisms improves growth and immunity remains unclear till now. Nevertheless, our results will facilitate further in-depth investigation into beneficial microbial communities for upliftment of white shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract:Beneficial microorganisms maintain the ecosystems, plants, animals and humans working in healthy conditions. In nature, around 95% of all microorganisms produce beneficial effects by increasing nutrients digestion and assimilation, preventing pathogens development and by improving environmental parameters. However, increase in human population and indiscriminate uses of antibiotics have been exerting a great pressure on agriculture, livestock, aquaculture, and also to the environment. This pressure has induced the decomposition of environmental parameters and the development of pathogenic strains resistant to most antibiotics. Therefore, all antibiotics have been restricted by corresponding authorities; hence, new and healthy alternatives to prevent or eliminate these pathogens need to be identified. Thus, probiotic bacteria utilization in aquaculture systems has emerged as a solution to prevent pathogens development, to enhance nutrients assimilation and to improve environmental parameters. In this sense, B. subtilis is an ideal multifunctional probiotic bacterium, with the capacity to solve these problems and also to increase aquaculture profitability.

Abstract:Shrimp is an important aquaculture species worldwide. The use of antibiotics to suppress disease outbreaks has led to antibiotic resistance; however, probiotics or natural herbal additives can enhance the health of farmed shrimp. In this study, the effects of formulations containing natural herbs and probiotics on shrimp farming were explored. Following indoor shrimp farming, the shrimp were returned to outdoor natural ponds for 1 week in the presence of a fermented probiotic product. The gut microbiota was surveyed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing at 1, 2, 3, and 8 weeks after the natural pond release. The results showed that Vibrio -related bacterial genera increased significantly in the shrimp intestinal microbiota at 2 weeks and were particularly high at 3 weeks after natural pond release. The phyla Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Vibrio -related bacteria, and the genus Cetobacterium emerged as crucial bacteria linked to shrimp health and growth. Overall, the diversity of the shrimp intestinal microbiota was lower upon release into the natural pond. However, this outcome may be associated with dysbiosis or influenced by the natural environment. Further research is warranted to substantiate these findings. A perspective on the shrimp gut microbiota provides important information for aquaculture management and explains the implementation of control measures.

Abstract:While health benefits imparted by probiotics and prebiotics in various finfish have been extensively researched over the past few decades, little emphasis has been given to its role in immunomodulation in grouper fish health. From this billion-dollar aquaculture industry, the production of an estimated 100,000 tons per annum of grouper fish is required to fulfill the needs of the global market by 2020. Thus, this huge demand has resulted in a rapid rise of grouper fish farms, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Unfortunately, grouper farming is often blighted by viral and bacterial diseases, which consequently devastate yields, resulting in economic losses. This review provides an overview of the functional role of probiotics and prebiotics, with specific emphasis on their immunomodulatory effects toward the advancement of grouper fish farming as one of the rising aquaculture commodities in the near future. Types of grouper-related diseases, probiotic strains, prebiotic types, dietary manipulations, immunological functions, and immunomodulatory mechanisms are reviewed and discussed in this article.
