Abstract:The twist-bend nematic (Ntb) phase is a recent addition to the nematic (N) phases of liquid crystals (LCs). A net polar order in the Ntb phase under an external electric field was predicted in several recent theoretical studies but yet to be experimentally realized. We investigated the polar nature, dielectric properties, electro-optical switching and optical transmission properties of a bent LC dimer CB7CB. The LC showed a relatively high-temperature nematic (N) phase and a lower-temperature nematic (NX) phase (also called Ntb in literature). A threshold-dependent polarization current response with large polarization values was obtained in the entire mesophase range. The associated switching times were found in sub-millisecond region. This ferroelectric-like polarization resulted from collective reorientation of polar cybotactic clusters. In NX phase, electric field-induced deformation of twisted helical structures also contributed to net polarization. Dielectric measurements confirmed the presence of cybotactic clusters via relaxation processes with large activation energies. Deformation of the NX helical structure under external electric field was corroborated by polarized optical microscopy and optical transmission studies. The field-induced deformations, net polar order and fast switching will contribute towards greater understanding of the NX (or Ntb) phase dynamics. It may also find applications in next-generation electro-optic devices.

Abstract:While twist-bend nematic phases have been extensively studied, the experimental observation of two dimensional, oscillating splay-bend phases is recent. We consider two theoretical models that have been used to explain the formation of twist-bend phases -- flexoelectricity and bond orientational order -- as mechanisms to induce splay-bend phases. Flexoelectricity is a viable mechanism, and splay and bend flexoelectric couplings can lead to splay-bend phases with different modulations. We show that while bond orientational order circumvents the need for higher order terms in the free energy, the important role of nematic symmetry and phase chirality rules it out as a basic mechanism.

Abstract:Assuming a simple biaxial molecular interaction model in nematic liquid crystal, and using the mean field approximation, phase transitions from isotropic to uniaxial nematics, uniaxial to biaxial nematics are obtained. The result obtained shows that at certain temperatures, the biaxial phases are induced by the asymmetry of molecular shape of liquid crystal. In nuclear magnetic resonance experiment, a general relation between order parameters and spectrum frequency splitting is derived, and possible experimental measurement is discussed.

Abstract:Only a few years have passed since the discovery of polar nematics, and now they are becoming the most actively studied liquid-crystal materials. Despite numerous breakthrough findings made recently, a theoretical systematization is still lacking. In the present paper, we take a step toward systematization. The powerful technique of molecular-statistical physics has been applied to an assembly of polar molecules influenced by electric field. Three polar nematic phases were found to be stable at various conditions: the double-splay ferroelectric nematic NF2D (observed in the lower-temperature range in the absence of or at low electric field), the double-splay antiferroelectric nematic NAF (observed at intermediate temperature in the absence of or at low electric field), and the single-splay ferroelectric nematic NF1D (observed at moderate electric field at any temperature below transition into paraelectric nematic N and in the higher-temperature range (also below N ) at low electric field or without it. A paradoxical transition from NF1D to N induced by application of higher electric field has been found and explained. A transformation of the structure of polar nematic phases at the application of electric field has also been investigated by Monte Carlo simulations and experimentally by observation of polarizing optical microscope images. In particular, it has been realized that, at planar anchoring, NAF in the presence of a moderate out-of-plane electric field exhibits twofold splay modulation: antiferroelectric in the plane of the substrate and ferroelectric in the plane normal to the substrate. Abstract:Twist-bend ( Ntb ) and ferroelectric ( NF ) nematic liquid crystals exhibit several novel effects and new physical properties. Here, we report experimental studies on the phase diagram and some physical properties of binary mixtures of CB9CB and RM734 mesogens. Both N- Ntb and N- NF phase transition temperatures and the corresponding enthalpies decrease significantly and, eventually, these transitions disappear at some intermediate compositions, stabilizing wide nematic phase (N). Temperature-dependent birefringence several degrees above the N- Ntb phase transition shows strong director tilt fluctuations. The critical range of the fluctuations increases with the nematic range and the critical exponent is consistent with the mean field. The spontaneous polarization of RM734 decreases drastically with the addition of CB9CB mesogen. The temperature dependence of the splay elastic constant of the mixtures' high-temperature nematic (N) phase strikingly differs from that of the pristine CB9CB and RM734 mesogens. Biaxiality-induced magnetic field effects in bent-core nematics: molecular-field and Landau theory

Abstract:Nematic liquid crystals composed of bent-core molecules exhibit unusual properties, including an enhanced Cotton-Mouton effect and an increasing isotropic (paranematic)-nematic phase transition temperature as a function of magnetic field. These systems are thought to be good candidate biaxial liquid crystals. Prompted by these experiments, we investigate theoretically the effect of molecular biaxiality on magnetic-field-induced phenomena for nematic liquid crystals, using both molecular field and Landau theory. The geometric mean approximation is used in order to specify the degree of molecular biaxiality using a single parameter. We reproduce experimental field-induced phenomena and predict also an experimentally accessible magnetic critical point. The Cotton-Mouton effect and temperature dependence of the paranematic-nematic phase transition are more pronounced with increased molecular biaxiality. We compare our theoretical approaches and make contact with recent relevant experimental results on bent-core molecular systems.

Abstract:Mesogenic dimers in the twist-bend nematic phase exhibit much higher flexoelectric polarization than in their uniform nematic phase. In order to theoretically investigate this data, we extend the symmetry based linear elastic theory of the twist-bend nematic phase developed in Phys. Rev. E 92, 030501(R) 2015, by including flexoelectricity under the action of an external electric field perpendicular to the helical axis. We show that at the nematic towards twist-bend nematic transition, a new flexoelectric mode becomes active. Consequently, the present model predicts the increase of the effective flexoelectric coefficient when the system is entering the twist-bend nematic phase. The influence of the flexoelectric coupling on the equilibrium wavevector and the spontaneous heliconical tilt angle are investigated. The electroclinic coefficient is calculated. Finally we argue that the helix could be unwound giving rise to a splay-bend nematic phase.

Abstract:The main-chain liquid crystal (LC) copolyethers in which the nematic-nematic phase transition was first experimentally observed were revisited and re-characterised. Grazing incidence X-ray scattering revealed that the low-T nematic (N-tb) phase could be highly aligned by shearing, more so than in previously studied bent LC dimers. This was evidenced by a four-point wide-angle X-ray scattering pattern, which originates from convolution of two tilt distributions. Through intensity simulation the orientational order parameter associated with each of the distributions, as well as the conical angle of the Ntb phase, was calculated. Information regarding the polymer chain conformation was obtained using polarised infrared spectroscopy. The findings suggest the average conformation of the chains is a helix, and that the bend angle between mesogenic units is inversely related to temperature. All experimental evidence, including a jump in birefringence at the N-tb-nematic (N) phase transition, shows that copolyether samples mirror the behaviour of bent LC dimers over the transition. This confirms that the low-T nematic phase in copolyethers is indeed the same as that in LC dimers, now known to be the N-tb. The unusual broadening of transition peaks in complex heat capacity, obtained by modulated DSC experiments, is discussed.

Abstract:We develop a Landau theory for bend flexoelectricity in liquid crystals of bent-core molecules. In the nematic phase of the model, the bend flexoelectric coefficient increases as we reduce the temperature toward the nematic to polar phase transition. At this critical point, there is a second-order transition from high-temperature uniform nematic phase to low-temperature nonuniform polar phase composed of twist-bend or splay-bend deformations. To test the predictions of Landau theory, we perform Monte Carlo simulations to find the director and polarization configurations as functions of temperature, applied electric field, and interaction parameters.
Splay-bend elastic inequalities shape tactoids, toroids, umbilics, and conic section walls in paraelectric, twist-bend, and ferroelectric nematics

Abstract:Elastic constants of splay K_11, twist K_22, and bend K_33 of nematic liquid crystals are often assumed to be equal to each other in order to simplify the theoretical description of complex director fields. Here we present examples of how the disparity of K_11 and K_33 produces effects that cannot be described in a one-constant approximation. In a lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal, nematic droplets coexisting with the isotropic phase change their shape from a simply-connected tactoid to a topologically distinct toroid as a result of temperature or concentration variation. The transformation is caused by the increase of the splay-to-bend ratio K_11/K_33. A phase transition from a conventional nematic to a twist-bend nematic implies that the ratio K_11/K_33 changes from very large to very small. As a result, the defects caused by an externally applied electric field change the deformation mode of optic axis from bend to splay. In the paraelectric-ferroelectric nematic transition, one finds an inverse situation: K_11/K_33 changes from small to large, which shapes the domain walls in the spontaneous electric polarization field as conic sections. The polarization field tends to be solenoidal, or divergence-free, a behavior complementary to irrotational curl-free director textures of a smectic A.

Abstract:Motivated by recent reports of nematic order in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), we investigate the impact of the triangular moiré superlattice degrees of freedom on nematicity. In TBG, the nematic order parameter is not Ising-like, as it is the case in tetragonal crystals, but has a 3-state Potts character related to the threefold rotational symmetry ($C_{3z}$) of the moiré superlattice. We find that even in the presence of static strain that explicitly breaks the $C_{3z}$ symmetry, the system can still undergo a nematic-flop phase transition that spontaneously breaks in-plane twofold rotations. Moreover, elastic fluctuations, manifested as acoustic phonons, mediate a nemato-orbital coupling that ties the orientation of the nematic director to certain soft directions in momentum space, rendering the Potts-nematic transition mean-field and first-order. In contrast to the case of rigid crystals, the Fermi-surface hot-spots associated with these soft directions are maximally coupled to the low-energy nematic fluctuations in the case of the moiré superlattice.

Abstract:The occurrence of new textures of liquid crystals is an important factor in tuning their optical and photonics properties. Here, we show, both experimentally and by numerical computation, that under an electric field chitin tactoids (i.e. nematic droplets) can stretch to aspect ratios of more than 15, leading to a transition from a spindle-like to a cigar-like shape. We argue that the large extensions occur because the elastic contribution to the free energy is dominated by the anchoring. We demonstrate that the elongation involves hydrodynamic flow and is reversible, the tactoids return to their original shapes upon removing the field.

Abstract:We propose that, for materials having positive dielectric anisotropy, the biaxiality can be clearly verified or excluded by measuring the transmitted light intensity as a function of electric field. If the material is biaxial and is observed in homeotropically aligned cells, the schlieren texture should not disappear (transmitted intensity is not zero) even at very high fields, since the field does not affect the distribution of the second director normal to the main director. On the other hand, if the material is uniaxial the transmitted intensity should decrease with increasing field and a perfect homeotropic texture can be achieved at high fields. We have studied a bent-core compound in which a uniaxial-biaxial nematic (N_{u}-N_{b}) transition has been reported. This material has a positive dielectric anisotropy at low frequencies, so we could apply the technique described above. Our studies indicate that the material is uniaxial in the entire nematic range.

Abstract:Different liquid crystalline phases with long-range orientational but not positional order, so-called nematic phases, are scarce. It rarely occurs that a new nematic phase is discovered and such event is inevitably accompanied by a great interest. Here, we describe a transition from uniaxial to novel nematic phase characterized by a periodic splay modulation of the director. In this new nematic phase, defect structures not present in the uniaxial nematic are observed, which indicates that the new phase has lower symmetry than the ordinary nematic phase. The phase transition is weakly first order with a significant pretransitional behavior, which manifests as strong splay fluctuations. When approaching the phase transition, the splay nematic constant is unusually low and goes towards zero. Analogously to the transition from the uniaxial nematic to the twist-bend nematic phase, this transition is driven by instability towards splay orientational deformation, resulting in a periodically splayed structure. And, similarly, a Landau-de Gennes type of phenomenological theory can be used to describe the phase transition. The modulated splay phase is biaxial and antiferroelectric.

Abstract:The dielectric spectra of the twist-bend nematic phase (NTB) of (the bent-shaped) achiral liquid-crystal dimer 1''-,7''-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl)heptane (CB7CB) are studied for the determination of the different relaxation modes. Two molecular processes and one collective process were observed in the megahertz frequency range. Two molecular processes were assigned: one to the precessional rotation of the longitudinal components of the cyanobiphenyl groups and the second one to the spinning rotation of the transverse component of the CB7CB dimer. The peak, at a frequency of about 1 MHz, shows a peculiar temperature behavior at the NTB to N transition, reminiscent of the soft mode at the transition from the SmA to the SmC phase. This peak can be assigned to a collective fluctuation of the tilt angle of the coarse grained director N with respect to the pseudo-layer normal. This corresponds well with the electro-clinic effect observed as a response to an electric field in electro-optic experiments. The low frequency relaxation process, observed in the frequency range of 1 Hz-102 Hz can be identified as a Goldstone mode, related to long-scale fluctuation of the cone phase. The frequency drop of the mode on increasing the bias field is interpreted as unwinding of a helix and an indication of the formation of a field induced nematic splay bend phase (NSB). This finding is also confirmed by birefringence data in the presence of strong bias fields.

Abstract:We show theoretically and experimentally that a homeotropically aligned nematic cell can exhibit bistability in response to rotation of an applied magnetic field. Two stable configurations of molecular reorientation exist when the applied field is stronger than the Fr\'eedericksz threshold value and its tilt angle away from the homeotropic alignment falls into a specific range. Switching in bistable operation was observed and found to be in good agreement with theory.

Abstract:The twist-bend nematic liquid crystal phase is a three-dimensional fluid in which achiral bent molecules spontaneously form an orientationally ordered, macroscopically chiral, heliconical winding of a ten nanometer-scale pitch in the absence of positional ordering. Here, the structure of the twist-bend phase of the bent dimer CB7CB and its mixtures with 5CB is characterized, revealing a hidden invariance of the self-assembly of the twist-bend structure of CB7CB, such that over a wide range of concentrations and temperatures, the helix pitch and cone angle change as if the ground state for a pitch of the TB helix is an inextensible heliconical ribbon along the contour formed by following the local molecular long axis (the director). Remarkably, the distance along the length for a single turn of this helix is given by 2πRmol, where Rmol is the radius of bend curvature of a single all-trans CB7CB molecule. This relationship emerges from frustrated steric packing due to the bent molecular shape: space in the fluid that is hard to fill attracts the most flexible molecular subcomponents, a theme of nanosegregation that generates self-assembled, oligomer-like correlations of interlocking bent molecules in the form of a brickwork-like tiling of pairs of molecular strands into duplex double-helical chains. At higher temperatures in the twist-bend phase, the cone angle is small, the director contour is nearly along the helix axis z, and the duplex chains are sequences of biaxial elements formed by overlapping half-molecule pairs, with an approximately 45° rotation of the biaxis between each such element along the chain.
