Abstract:The commercial application of cobalt-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) suffers from catalyst deactivation. One of the main deactivation mechanisms under industrial conditions is sintering. In this work, we explored the role of manganese oxide as a structural promoter against sintering in a carbon nanofiber supported cobalt model catalyst. We employed in situ Mössbauer emission spectroscopy to study cobalt sintering in synthesis gas as a function of the steam partial pressure, which mimics high CO conversion during FTS. Steam accelerates the sintering of non-promoted metallic cobalt particles. Model experiments point to a synergistic effect between carbon monoxide and steam on cobalt sintering. In the mangense-promoted case, sintering is significantly reduced, indicative of the structural stabilization of small cobalt particles by manganese oxide. Nevertheless, a fraction of cobalt particles in close interaction with manganese oxide carburized under these conditions, resulting in a lower catalytic activity.

Abstract:Fischer–Tropsch synthesis over CoMn oxides is a surface-catalyzed structure-sensitive reaction. Active site changes greatly alter product distribution. The dynamics and essence of the changes in Co species during the reaction have seldom been explored. Herein, multiple characterizations were applied to confirm that two types of active sites, i.e., Co and Co2C, coexist on CoMnO x under the reaction conditions. Apart from the direct participation of carbon species in the reaction, the steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis also suggested the mutual transformation of carbon species in Co2C. The ratio of the two paths altered with the temperature, thus leading to Co2C-rich and Co-rich surfaces at intermediate and high temperatures, respectively. Kinetic calculations and microkinetic modeling showed that Co2C-rich surfaces facilitated CO adsorption and suppressed hydrogen adsorption. This gave high carbon-chain growth activity. The Co-rich surfaces showed high vacancy and hydrogen coverages, lowering the CO activation and CH4 formation energies.

Abstract:Transition metal-based composites are one of the most important electrocatalysts because of their rich redox chemistry. The reaction kinetics of a redox couple is dependent on the chemical valence and is a key issue in electrocatalytic performance. In this study, a metallic Co catalyst was synthesized by pyrolyzing Co(OH)(2). The effect of the chemical valence of Co on the oxygen reduction reaction ( ORR) was investigated by comparing the electrocatalytic properties of three Co-based catalysts containing Co-0, Co2+, and Co3+. The electrocatalytic properties were evaluated mainly by linear scan voltammetry (LSV) and a direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) where the Co-based catalysts were used as cathodes. The LSV results show that the ORR peak current density increases with a decrease in chemical valence. The DBFC with the Co-0 cathode exhibits highest power density and good durability. In situ X-ray diffraction combined with in situ X-ray absorption fine structure tests was carried out to reveal the dynamic microstructure evolution of the Co-0 cathode during ORR. The in situ results clearly demonstrate the evolution of metallic Co to Co(OH) (2) and then to CoOOH during the ORR.
Cobalt-Based Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis: A Kinetic Evaluation of Metal–Support Interactions Using an Inverse Model System

Abstract:Metal–support interactions in the cobalt–alumina system are evaluated using an inverse model system generated by impregnating Co3O4 with a solution of aluminum sec-butoxide in n-hexane. This results in the formation of nano-sized alumina islands on the surface of cobalt oxide. The activated model systems were kinetically evaluated for their activity and selectivity in the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis under industrially relevant conditions (220 °C, 20 bar). The kinetic measurements were complemented by H2-chemisorption, CO-TPR, and pyridine TPD. It is shown that the introduction of aluminum in the model system results in the formation of strong acid sites and enhanced CO dissociation, as evidenced in the CO-TPR. The incorporation of aluminum in the model systems led to a strong increase in the activity factor per surface atom of cobalt in the rate expression proposed by Botes et al. (2009). However, the addition of aluminum also resulted in a strong increase in the kinetic inhibition factor. This is accompanied by a strong decrease in the methane selectivity, and an increase in the desired C5+ selectivity. The observed activity and selectivity changes are attributed to the increase in the coverage of the surface with carbon with increasing aluminum content, due to the facilitation of CO dissociation in the presence of Lewis acid sites associated with the alumina islands on the catalytically active material.

Abstract:The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis as a large-scale industrial process converts a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a surface polymerization reaction to mostly hydrocarbons and water. In fact, water is the most abundant product on a per mole basis. The major deactivation mechanisms for cobalt-based catalysts in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis regarding the active metallic phase are various forms of carbon deposition, sintering, and oxidation to Fischer-Tropsch inactive oxidic phases. In particular high concentrations of the product water may cause oxidation and sintering of the active metallic cobalt phase, but are inherent to high conversion levels in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Not only can cobalt be oxidized to CoO, it may also form mixed metal oxides such as cobalt aluminates in the presence of a metal oxide support. However, literature only provides limited information on the formation and morphology of such metal-support compounds due to the challenging (direct) characterization of these phases in the spent catalysts. Herein, thermodynamic predictions summarize and discuss the feasibility of water-induced deactivation of cobalt-based Fischer-Tropsch catalysts by oxidation. Further, identified mechanisms for hydrothermal sintering and recent findings on water-induced oxidation of metallic cobalt to CoO are discussed. However, the main emphasis of the review concerns the formation of metal-support compounds and the applicability of various in situ and ex situ characterization techniques on their identification. In particular X-ray absorption spectroscopy has recently provided significant insights into the formation of metal-support compounds in (simulated) high conversion Fischer-Tropsch environment, while high resolution microscopy was successfully applied to elucidate corresponding catalyst morphologies.
Identification of carbon species on iron-based catalysts during Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

Abstract:This paper focuses on the use of in situ and ex situ characterisation techniques to provide evidences of carbon species on a commercial iron-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalyst as well as other indices of potential deactivation mechanisms. In situ XANES measurements demonstrate that re-oxidation or transformation of the active iron phase, i.e. the Hägg carbide phase, was not a significant deactivation mechanism at the studied conditions. Sintering of Hägg carbide nanoparticles is significant with increasing temperatures and time on stream. The sintering mechanism is proposed to be a hydrothermally-assisted process. In situ DRIFTS indicates the presence of different carbon species on the catalyst surface such as aliphatic hydrocarbons from wax products and oxygenate compounds such as alcohols, aldehydes/ketones and carboxylate species. Carboxylate species are resistant towards hydrogenation at 280 °C. The presence of different carbon species on the surface after wax product extraction is evident from TPH-MS measurements. GC-MS analysis shows that the strongly adsorbed carbon species remaining on the catalyst surface from wax products are mainly α-olefins and branched carboxylic species. The interaction of oxygenate compounds, especially carboxylate species with iron oxide, may form stable complexes limiting further iron catalyst carburization. STEM-EDX analysis shows that carbon is preferentially located on iron particles.

Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is an important heterogeneous catalytic process that can effectively reduce human dependence on the non-renewable petroleum resources. Cobalt is a crucial active metal center in most catalysts, which effectively catalyzes syngas into valuable products such as liquid fuels. On this basis, we systematically investigated the adsorption of CO on the surface of different cobalt species and its dissociation characteristics assisted by H 2 are studied by the in-situ DRIFTS. For the metallic cobalt phase, H 2 -assisted CO dissociation not only possessed the FTS activity, but also inhibited the CO disproportionation reaction. However, for the CoO phase, the bidentate carbonate species were decomposed into CO 2 . In addition, CoO presented a high-chain propagation ability than that of Co under the same operation conditions. Co 2 O 3 and Co 3 O 4 also exhibited similar CO dissociation patterns with the assistance of H 2 . However, different from CoO phase, formate species also formed under the H 2 atmosphere over these two Co species. In summary, CO dissociation would be well tuned via the assistance of H 2 as demonstrated by the in-situ DRIFTS. This work provides a new sight on the rational design of efficient cobalt catalysts toward the FTS processes.

Competitive Deposition of C and O Species on Cobalt Surface in Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis Conditions: A Plausible Origin of Deactivation

Abstract:Using density functional theory calculations, we investigate the surface deposition of O on Co(111) terrace and Co(221), Co(112) step surfaces in realistic Fischer–Tropsch (FT) reaction conditions. We compared these results with previous works for C deposition on Co surfaces. Furthermore, we compute the activation barriers of C and O diffusion in subsurface Co(111) sites at different surface coverages. According to our results, thermodynamics and kinetics exhibit opposite trends, and the final cause of the catalyst deactivation is the outcome of a trade-off between the two effects. In particular, we show that the surface deposition of O is thermodynamically favorable. However, in order to increase a surface coverage beyond 1 ML, the O atom should first diffuse within the Co sublattice, which is kinetically hindered compared to subsurface C diffusion. However, the formation of an oxide shell around Co is possible from a thermodynamic and a kinetic point of view, particularly in the presence of an oxygen surface vacancy allowing the outward relaxation of Co atom (Kirkendall-type process). Lastly, we discuss in which circumstances the formation of this O overlayer prevails over the deactivation by the deposition of C resulting from a subtle interplay between the kinetics of the FT reaction steps.
Carbon Monoxide Activation on Cobalt Carbide for Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis from First-Principles Theory

Abstract:Cobalt carbide based catalyst shows a promising activity and selectivity in the direct conversion of syngas (a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen molecules) toward oxygenates and lower olefin. A mechanistic understanding of the cobalt carbide structure as well as its intrinsic reactivity under Fischer–Tropsch reaction conditions is vital but remains controversial. On the basis of ab initio thermodynamics and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we study here a number of the pristine Co2C surfaces with different orientations and compositions as well as their catalytic activity on CO direct dissociation. The corresponding phase diagram and equilibrium morphology of Co2C under a wide range of the chemical potential of carbon are constructed. Under a higher chemical potential of carbon (carbon-rich conditions), carbon-rich surfaces like (110) and (111) facets are preferentially exposed surfaces, whereas at a lower chemical potential of carbon, the stoichiometric surfaces like (011) facet could appear. Cobalt-rich surfaces such as (101) and (010) facets could be exposed only due to the kinetics hindrance under carbon-poor or hydrogen-rich conditions where the pristine bulk carbide is thermodynamically not stable. It is found that though CO adsorbs strongly on stoichiometric and carbon-rich Co2C surfaces, the barrier for subsequent CO direct dissociation is significantly high. The presence of the carbon vacancy could promote CO direct dissociation. However, the high energy cost to produce the carbon vacancy for instance via methanation limits its overall activity toward CO activation. Implications of the present results on the role of Co2C in direct conversion of syngas toward oxygenates and lower olefin are discussed along with available experiments.

Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis: The Characterization and Testing of Pt-Co/SiO2 Catalysts Prepared with Alternative Cobalt Precursors

Abstract:Different low-cost cobalt precursors (acetate, chloride) and thermal treatments (air calcination/H2 reduction versus direct H2-activation) were investigated to alter the interaction between cobalt and silica. H2-activated catalysts prepared from cobalt chloride had large Co0 particles (XRD, chemisorption) formed by weak interactions between cobalt chloride and silica (temperature programmed reduction (TPR), TPR with mass spectrometry (TPR-MS), TPR with extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) techniques) and retained Cl-blocked active sites, resulting in poor activity. In contrast, unpromoted Co/SiO2 catalysts derived from cobalt acetate had strong interactions between Co species and silica (TPR/TPR-MS, TPR-EXAFS/XANES); adding Pt increased the extent of the Co reduction. For these Pt-promoted catalysts, the reduction of uncalcined catalysts was faster, resulting in larger Co0 clusters (19.5 nm) in comparison with the air-calcined/H2-activated catalyst (7.8 nm). Both catalysts had CO conversions 25% higher than that of the Pt-promoted catalyst prepared in the traditional manner (air calcination/H2 reduction using cobalt nitrate) and three times higher than that of the traditional unpromoted Co/silica catalyst. The retention of residual cobalt carbide (observed in XANES) from cobalt acetate decomposition impacted performance, resulting in a higher C1–C4 selectivity (32.2% for air-calcined and 38.7% for uncalcined) than that of traditional catalysts (17.5–18.6%). The residual carbide also lowered the α-value and olefin/paraffin ratio. Future work will focus on improving selectivity through oxidation–reduction cycles.

Chemical Imaging of Carbide Formation and Its Effect on Alcohol Selectivity in Fischer Tropsch Synthesis on Mn-Doped Co/TiO2 Pellets

Abstract:X-ray diffraction/scattering computed tomography (XRS-CT) was used to create two-dimensional images, with 20 μm resolution, of passivated Co/TiO2/Mn Fischer-Tropsch catalyst extrudates postreaction after 300 h on stream under industrially relevant conditions. This combination of scattering techniques provided insights into both the spatial variation of the different cobalt phases and the influence that increasing Mn loading has on this. It also demonstrated the presence of a wax coating throughout the extrudate and its capacity to preserve the Co/Mn species in their state in the reactor. Correlating these findings with catalytic performance highlights the crucial phases and active sites within Fischer-Tropsch catalysts required for understanding the tunability of the product distribution between saturated hydrocarbons or oxygenate and olefin products. In particular, a Mn loading of 3 wt % led to an optimum equilibrium between the amount of hexagonal close-packed Co and Co2C phases resulting in maximum oxygenate selectivity. XRS-CT revealed Co2C to be located on the extrudates' periphery, while metallic Co phases were more prevalent toward the center, possibly due to a lower [CO] ratio there. Reduction at 450 °C of a 10 wt % Mn sample resulted in MnTiO3 formation, which inhibited carbide formation and alcohol selectivity. It is suggested that small MnO particles promote Co carburization by decreasing the CO dissociation barrier, and the Co2C phase promotes CO nondissociative adsorption leading to increased oxygenate selectivity. This study highlights the influence of Mn on the catalyst structure and function and the importance of studying catalysts under industrially relevant reaction times.

Abstract:Direct identification of the active sites of a working catalyst is still a major problem in heterogeneous catalysis. Here we present an operando scanning tunnelling microscopy study, in which insight into the nature of the active sites was obtained for the cobalt-catalysed Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. Experiments were performed on a Co(0001) sample under H2/CO gas mixtures at pressures of up to 950 mbar and a temperature of ~500 K. On the same apparatus, turnover frequencies were measured with a customized gas chromatograph. The density of monoatomic steps of the sample was varied by sputtering. The Fischer–Tropsch activity scaled with step density, from which steps are identified as the active sites of this reaction. The long-standing idea that the activation of the Co catalyst is connected with a roughening of the surface is not confirmed. The known activity function can be explained by pre-existing steps without roughening.

Abstract:Results from the prolonged tests of zeolite-containing cobalt catalysts for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis in reactor tubes comparable in size to those used in industrial reactors. During 3000 hours on stream catalyst activity was decreased by 13%. It is shown that the main reasons for zeolite-containing cobalt catalyst deactivation are agglomeration of cobalt clusters and carbon deposition on the catalyst surface. The authors propose one method of reducing the catalyst deactivation rate and two methods of regenerating it. It is shown that the oxidative regeneration treatment of zeolite-containing cobalt catalysts allows to recover 98% of the initial activity.

Abstract:Slurry-phase Fischer–Tropsch catalysis is widely used in the production of synthetic transportation fuels, but places severe stresses on the catalyst due to the demanding hydrothermal and mechanical reaction conditions. In this Article we report the synthesis, characterization and catalytic performance of a robust cobalt-based Fischer–Tropsch catalyst. Combining an inert alpha alumina support with an appropriate cobalt addition method produces a material that is easy to reduce without precious metal additives and is mechanically and hydrothermally stable. Unlike many Fischer–Tropsch catalysts, this material is resistant to sintering and shows excellent selectivity and good activity in slurry-phase testing over 1,000 hours.

Abstract:Unresolved mechanistic details of monomer formation in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) and of its oxygen rejection routes are addressed here by combining kinetic and theoretical analyses of elementary steps on representative Fe and Co surfaces saturated with chemisorbed CO. These studies provide experimental and theoretical evidence for hydrogen-assisted CO activation as the predominant kinetically-relevant step on Fe and Co catalysts at conditions typical of FTS practice. H2 and CO kinetic effects on FTS rates and oxygen rejection selectivity (as H2O or CO2) and density functional theory estimates of activation barriers and binding energies are consistent with H-assisted CO dissociation, but not with the previously accepted kinetic relevance of direct CO dissociation and chemisorbed carbon hydrogenation elementary steps. H-assisted CO dissociation removes O-atoms as H2O, while direct dissociation forms chemisorbed oxygen atoms that desorb as CO2. Direct CO dissociation routes are minor contributors to monomer formation on Fe and may become favored at high temperatures on alkali-promoted catalysts, but not on Co catalysts, which remove oxygen predominantly as H2O because of the preponderance of H-assisted CO dissociation routes. The merging of experiment and theory led to the clarification of persistent mechanistic issues previously unresolved by separate experimental and theoretical inquiries.

Abstract:In the realm of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), the escalating cost of cobalt has spurred interest in Co-Fe bimetallic catalysts as substitutes for monometallic Co catalysts. Unfortunately, it is difficult to clarify specific functions and interactions of the two phases, as investigating catalysts in a unified dimension of both metal and support is still a challenge. Herein, we realize precise control over synthesizing nitrogen-doped carbon materials supported bimetallic catalysts containing CoFe alloy and Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases. The catalysts are comprehensively characterized to address the above problem by excluding the influence of metal sizes and support properties. Our findings reveal that compared to metallic Co alone and Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases, the Co-Fe interaction in CoFe alloy with electron transfer from Fe to Co optimizes reactant adsorption behaviors through achieving a larger number of strongly adsorbed CO per active site to increase the density of C* adsorbates and a higher surface CO/H 2 ratio to inhibit the hydrogenation of CH x * intermediates for chain termination, as well as an appropriate ability for CO adsorption/ dissociation. These advantages collectively enhance both CO activation and C-C coupling, and consequently, the CoFe/NC (CoFe alloy) catalyst exhibits the superior catalytic performance in the cobalt space–time yield in C 5+ products (3011.2 g C5+ kg Co −1 h −1 ), which surpasses the Co/NC (monometallic Co) and Co + Fe/NC (Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases) by 2.2 times and 2.4 times, respectively. This study serves as a promising route for the development of efficient and low-cost bimetallic catalysts through the strategic arrangement of multiple active phases for various reactions.

Abstract:Although we often understand empirically what constitutes an active catalyst, there is still much to be understood fundamentally about how catalytic performance is influenced by formulation. Catalysts are often designed to have a microstructure and nanostructure that can influence performance but that is rarely considered when correlating structure with function. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is a well-known and potentially sustainable technology for converting synthetic natural gas ("syngas": CO + H2) into functional hydrocarbons, such as sulfur- and aromatic-free fuel and high-value wax products. FTS catalysts typically contain Co or Fe nanoparticles, which are often optimized in terms of size/composition for a particular catalytic performance. We use a novel, "multimodal" tomographic approach to studying active Co-based catalysts under operando conditions, revealing how a simple parameter, such as the order of addition of metal precursors and promoters, affects the spatial distribution of the elements as well as their physicochemical properties, that is, crystalline phase and crystallite size during catalyst activation and operation. We show in particular how the order of addition affects the crystallinity of the TiO2 anatase phase, which in turn leads to the formation of highly intergrown cubic close-packed/hexagonal close-packed Co nanoparticles that are very reactive, exhibiting high CO conversion. This work highlights the importance of operando microtomography to understand the evolution of chemical species and their spatial distribution before any concrete understanding of impact on catalytic performance can be realized.
