Abstract:In situ/operando surface enhanced infrared and Raman spectroscopies are widely employed in electrocatalysis research to extract mechanistic information and establish structure-activity relations. However, these two spectroscopic techniques are more frequently employed in isolation than in combination, owing to the assumption that they provide largely overlapping information regarding reaction intermediates. Here we show that surface enhanced infrared and Raman spectroscopies tend to probe different subpopulations of adsorbates on weakly adsorbing surfaces while providing similar information on strongly binding surfaces by conducting both techniques on the same electrode surfaces, i.e., platinum, palladium, gold and oxide-derived copper, in tandem. Complementary density functional theory computations confirm that the infrared and Raman intensities do not necessarily track each other when carbon monoxide is adsorbed on different sites, given the lack of scaling between the derivatives of the dipole moment and the polarizability. Through a comparison of adsorbed carbon monoxide and water adsorption energies, we suggest that differences in the infrared vs. Raman responses amongst metal surfaces could stem from the competitive adsorption of water on weak binding metals. We further determined that only copper sites capable of adsorbing carbon monoxide in an atop configuration visible to the surface enhanced infrared spectroscopy are active in the electrochemical carbon monoxide reduction reaction.
Surface Enhanced Infrared Absorption Spectroscopic Investigation of CO Electrosorption and Electrooxidation on Pt Nanocrystals

Abstract:Electrochemical attenuated total reflection-surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATRSEIRAS) has been used to investigate the facet-dependent adsorption and oxidation of CO on the {100}preferred Pt nanocrystals (NCs). The cyclic voltammogram for the synthesized and then cleaned Pt NCs in a sulfuric acid solution displayed four pairs of redox peaks. The peaks located at 0.26 and 0.36 V were attributed to interfacial hydrogen electro-adsorption/desorption processes on the shortand long-range Pt{100} domains, respectively. Furthermore, the Pt{100} and Pt{111} domains were estimated to account for 34% and 14% of the active sites on the surfaces of the Pt NCs, respectively, based on Bi and Ge irreversible adsorption methods. Potential-dependent spectral features can be used to differentiate the adsorption and oxidation processes of linearly adsorbed CO (COL) species on the three basic planes of the Pt NCs. COL species on the Pt{110} facets were oxidized preferentially, followed sequentially by those on the Pt{111} and Pt{100} facets. COL on Pt{100} required the highest overpotential for their oxidation.

Abstract:The adsorption behavior of a CO adlayer at at Au core-Pt shell (Au@Pt) nanoparticle electrode as a function of CO coverage, partial pressure, and electrolyte composition is examined by electrochemical in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) combined with a thin layer flow cell, which allows time-resolved spectro-electrochemical measurements upon sudden exchange of the electrolyte under potential control. We find (i) a clear decrease (increase) in the Pt-COL (C-O-L) peak frequency and all increase of both hands' intensities With COad Coverage; (ii) a slight increase in the Pt-COL and decrease in the C-O-L Stretching frequencies and an increase in both intensities of the COad-saturated layer when switching from CO-saturated to CO-free Solution; (iii) a clear decrease (up to 50%) of intensities of all of the Pt-CO and C-O bands and the SERS background during the Solution switch from H2SO4 or NaOH to Na2SO4; (iv) a slightly higher C-O-L (lower Pt-COL) peak frequency in H2SO4 than that in Na2SO4 and NaOH. The contributions of different factors such as SERS enhancement, Pt-CO binding strength, CO molecular orientation, and dynamic dipole-dipole Coupling interactions among the COad molecules to the SERS spectral behavior are discussed on the basis of the complementary information of both Pt-CO and C-O stretching vibrations.
Multi-band metasurface-driven surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy for improved characterization of in-situ electrochemical reactions

Abstract:Surface-enhanced spectroscopy techniques are the method-of-choice to characterize adsorbed intermediates occurring during electrochemical reactions, which are crucial in realizing a green sustainable future. Characterizing species with low coverages or short lifetimes have so far been limited by low signal enhancement. Recently, metasurface-driven surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) has been pioneered as a promising narrowband technology to study single vibrational modes of electrochemical interfaces during CO oxidation. However, many reactions involve several species or configurations of adsorption that need to be monitored simultaneously requiring reproducible and broadband sensing platforms to provide a clear understanding of the underlying electrochemical processes. Here, we experimentally realize multi-band metasurface-driven SEIRAS for the in-situ study of electrochemical CO2 reduction on a Pt surface. We develop an easily reproducible and spectrally-tunable platinum nano-slot metasurface. Two CO adsorption configurations at 2030 cm-1 and 1840 cm-1 are locally enhanced as a proof of concept that can be extended to more vibrational bands. Our platform provides a 41-fold enhancement in the detection of characteristic absorption signals compared to conventional broadband electrochemically roughened platinum films. A straightforward methodology is outlined starting by baselining our system in CO saturated environment and clearly detecting both configurations of adsorption, in particular the hitherto hardly detectable CO bridge configuration. Then, thanks to the signal enhancement provided by our platform, we find that the CO bridge configuration on platinum does not play a significant role during CO2 reduction in an alkaline environment. We anticipate that our technology will guide researchers in developing similar sensing platforms.

Abstract:The strongly enhanced electromagnetic near fields of our platinum nano‐slot metasurface deliver a 27‐fold improvement of the experimentally detected absorption signals of adsorbed carbon monoxide at ≈2033 cm−1 compared to conventional unstructured platinum films. Our platform enables the detection of new species with weak signals, fast conversions, or low surface concentrations. Electrocatalysis plays a crucial role in realizing the transition toward a zero‐carbon future, driving research directions from green hydrogen generation to carbon dioxide reduction. Surface‐enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) is a suitable method for investigating electrocatalytic processes because it can monitor with chemical specificity the mechanisms of the reactions. However, it remains difficult to detect many relevant aspects of electrochemical reactions such as short‐lived intermediates. Herein, an integrated nanophotonic‐electrochemical SEIRAS platform is developed and experimentally realized for the in situ investigation of molecular signal traces emerging during electrochemical experiments. A platinum nano‐slot metasurface featuring strongly enhanced electromagnetic near fields is implemented and spectrally targets the weak vibrational mode of the adsorbed carbon monoxide at ≈2033 cm−1. The metasurface‐driven resonances can be tuned over a broad range in the mid‐infrared spectrum and provide high molecular sensitivity. Compared to conventional unstructured platinum films, this nanophotonic‐electrochemical platform delivers a 27‐fold improvement of the experimentally detected characteristic absorption signals, enabling the detection of new species with weak signals, fast conversions, or low surface concentrations. By providing a deeper understanding of catalytic reactions, the nanophotonic‐electrochemical platform is anticipated to open exciting perspectives for electrochemical SEIRAS, surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and other fields of chemistry such as photoelectrocatalysis.

Abstract:ATR-SEIRAS is extended for the first time to study potential-induced surface and interface structure variation of a CO-covered Pt electrode in a room-temperature ionic liquid of N-butyl-N-methyl-piperidinium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide (or [Pip14][TNf2]). Owing to a wide effective potential window of [Pip14][TNf2], a gradual conversion from bridged COad (COB) to terminal COad (COL) is observed in response to positively going potentials, suggesting that [Pip14]+ may be involved in a strong electrostatic interaction with the COad. This site conversion enables the ratio of the apparent absorption coefficient of COL to that of COB to be determined. Also, the spectral results reveal the potential-dependent COad frequency variations as well as the potential-induced interfacial ionic reorientation and movement at the Pt/CO/[Pip14][TNf2] interface.
Influence of CO Adsorption on the Structure of Electric Double Layer on Cu Surface

Abstract:Understanding the interplay between reactant adsorbate and structure of the electric double layer (EDL) is crucial as it plays a key role in determining the efficiency and kinetics of heterogeneous electrocatalytic reactions. In this context, our study presents a comprehensive experimental analysis of the EDL structure and its interaction with CO adsorption on Cu surfaces. Utilizing in situ surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) and electrochemical impedance characterizations, we investigate the impact of CO adsorption on EDL properties at various CO pressures. Our findings demonstrate a significant decrease in EDL capacitance with increased CO adsorption, linked to reduced cation density, increased EDL thickness, and weakened interfacial electric field strength. Additionally, we observed a considerable decline in the relative dielectric constant of the EDL, which is likely attributable to the influence of adsorbed CO altering the dielectric properties of the medium. These results emphasize the critical role of adsorbate-EDL interactions in electrocatalytic processes, providing new insights into these complex dynamics.
CO adsorption kinetics and adlayer build-up studied by combined ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and on-line DEMS under continuous flow conditions

Abstract:Using a novel combined spectro-electrochemical DEMS/ATR-FTIRS technique, the CO adsorption kinetics on a Pt film electrode were studied, performing transient CO adsorption experiments at different constant potentials (0.06–0.6V). CO adsorption rate and COad coverage were determined continuously from the CO consumption measured by on-line differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS). Simultaneously measured FTIR spectra, recorded in situ in an attenuated total reflection (ATR) configuration, allow a direct correlation of the IR band intensity and frequency with COad surface coverage at different constant potentials. The data show that (i) the CO adsorption kinetics are independent of the adsorption potential up to 0.5V, (ii) a significant potential dependence of the ratio between COL and COM for the same coverage, (iii) in the regime of very high COad coverages there is no proportional relation between COad coverage and COL,M intensity, and (iv) a distinct tendency for COad island formation at Eads<0.2V and>0.4V, most likely due to coadsorption of H-upd at the lower potentials and (bi-)sulfate at higher potentials. Finally, at 0.6V, COad oxidation follows a Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism with the highest CO2 formation rate at a relative COad coverage of ∼0.4.
CO Adsorption on the O-saturated Ag/Pt(110) Composite Surface: Direct Observation of the Diffusion of Adsorbed CO from Strongly Bound Pt Sites to Weakly Bound Ag Sites

Abstract:In our work, photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) was employed to real-time and in situ study CO adsorption on the O-saturated Ag/Pt(110) composite surface. Coupling occurred between adjacent surfaces with different activities for CO + Oad reaction, in which adsorbed CO was directly observed to migrate from strongly bound Pt sites to weakly bound Ag sites in the form of reaction−diffusion wave. Our results imply that surface species may migrate not only from weakly bound sites to strongly bound sites (enthalpy favorable process) but also from strongly bound sites to weakly bound sites (enthalpy unfavorable process) during heterogeneous catalysis reactions.

Abstract:Ceria based catalysts show remarkable activity for CO conversion reactions such as CO oxidation and the water-gas shift reaction. The identification of adsorption sites on the catalyst surfaces is essential to understand the reaction mechanisms of these reactions, but the complexity of heterogeneous powder catalysts and the propensity of ceria to easily change oxidation states in the presence of small concentrations of either oxidizing or reducing agents make the process difficult. In this study, the adsorption of CO on CuOx/Cu(111) and CeOx/Cu(111) systems has been studied using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. IR peaks for the adsorbed CO on O/Cu(111) with only chemisorbed oxygen, well-ordered Cu2O/Cu(111) and disordered copper oxide [CuOx/Cu(111)] were observed at 2070-2072, 2097-2098 and 2101-2111 cm(-1), respectively. On CeOx/Cu(111) systems CO chemisorbs at 90 K only on Cu sites under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions, whereas at elevated CO pressures and low temperatures adsorption of CO on Ce(3+) is observed, with a corresponding IR peak at 2162 cm(-1). These experimental results are further supported by DFT calculations, and help to unequivocally distinguish the presence of Ce(3+) cations on catalyst samples by using CO as a probe molecule.

Abstract:Interaction of carbon monoxide (CO) with transition metal surfaces is an essential part of CO oxidation catalysis. In this report, we investigate and compare CO adsorption behavior on Pt (111) and Pd (111) surfaces combining first-principles (FP) calculations and lattice gas Monte-Carlo (LG-MC) simulations. Our results indicate that despite stronger CO binding on Pd (111) at low coverage, more repulsive lateral interactions on Pd surface lead to a more rapid adsorption energy decrease with respect to coverage. This results in lower saturation coverage and weaker CO desorption energies on Pd (111), which could contribute to its excellent reactivity observed under high pressure reaction conditions.
The Dynamic Nature of CO Adlayers on Pt(111) Electrodes.

Abstract:AbstractCO adlayers on Pt(111) electrode surfaces are an important electrochemical system and of great relevance to electrocatalysis. The potential‐dependent structure and dynamics of these adlayers are complex and still controversial, especially in the CO pre‐oxidation regime. We here employ in situ high‐speed scanning tunneling microscopy for studying the surface phase behavior in CO‐saturated 0.1 m H2SO4 on the millisecond time scale. At potentials near the onset of CO pre‐oxidation local fluctuations in the (2×2)‐CO adlayer are observed, which increase towards more positive potentials. Above 0.20 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), this leads to an adlayer where COad apparently reside on every top site, but still exhibit a (2×2) superstructure modulation. We interpret this observation as a dynamic effect, caused by a small number of highly mobile point defects in the (2×2)‐CO adlayer. As shown by density functional theory calculations, the CO lattice near such defects relaxes into a local (1×1) arrangement, which can rapidly propagate across the surface. This scenario, where a static (2×2) COad sublattice coexists with a highly dynamic sublattice of partially occupied top sites, explains the pronounced COad surface mobility during electrooxidation.

Abstract:We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of COads on Pt147 dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles (DENs). In-situ electrochemical IR spectroscopy reveals an 8 cm−1 redshift of the COads stretching frequency on Pt147 DENs relative to a Pt(111) crystal. This value is in good agreement with the shift calculated by density functional theory. Importantly, the wavenumber shift observed in this study is significantly smaller than has been found previously. We attribute this primarily to the absence of support effects and the narrow size distribution of DENs. The agreement between experiment and theory validates the model nanoparticle system used for the calculations, and this will make it possible to use the COads frequency as a probe to study more complex DEN structures and as a descriptor of the catalytic activity of DENs toward reactions such as formic acid oxidation and methanol oxidation.

Abstract:CO and CO2 chemisorption on uniform CeO2, TiO2, and Cu2O nanocrystals with various morphologies were comprehensively studied with in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The formed adsorbates were observed to be morphology dependent. CO or CO2 chemisorbed at the metal cation sites, and bidentate and bridged carbonates involving the O sites are sensitive to the surface composition and the local coordination environments of surface metal cations and O anions and can be correlated well with the surface structures of facets exposed on oxide nanocrystals. Carbonate and carbonite species formed by CO chemisorption can probe the different facets of CeO2. Carbonate species formed by CO chemisorption can probe the different facets of TiO2. Adsorbed CO and carbonate species formed by CO chemisorption can probe the different facets of Cu2O, and adsorbed CO2 formed by CO2 chemisorption can also probe the different facets of Cu2O. These results demonstrate chemisorption of probing molecules as a convenient technique to identify surface structures of different facets of oxide nanocrystals and lay the foundations of surface structures for the fundamental understanding of catalysis and other surface-mediated functions of CeO2, TiO2, and Cu2O nanocrystals.

Abstract:The activity and product selectivity of electrocatalysts for reactions like the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) are intimately dependent on the catalyst's structure and composition. While engineering catalytic surfaces can improve performance, discovering the key sets of rational design principles remains challenging due to limitations in modeling catalyst stability under operating conditions. Herein, we perform first‐principles density functional calculations adopting implicit solvation methods with potential control to study the influence of adsorbates and applied potential on the stability of different facets of model Cu electrocatalysts. Using coverage dependencies extracted from microkinetic models, we describe an approach for calculating potential and adsorbate‐dependent contributions to surface energies under reaction conditions, where Wulff constructions are used to understand the morphological evolution of Cu electrocatalysts under CO2RR conditions. We identify that CO*, a key reaction intermediate, exhibits higher kinetically and thermodynamically accessible coverages on (100) relative to (111) facets, which can translate into an increased relative stabilization of the (100) facet during CO2RR. Our results support the known tendency for increased (111) faceting of Cu nanoparticles under more reducing conditions and that the relative increase in (100) faceting observed under CO2RR conditions is likely attributed to differences in CO* coverage between these facets.

Abstract:AbstractCO binding energy has been widely employed as a descriptor for effective catalysts in the electrochemical CO2and CO reduction reactions (CO(2)RR), however, it has yet to be determined experimentally at electrochemical interfaces due to the lack of suitable techniques. In this work, we developed a method to determine the standard adsorption enthalpy of CO on Cu surfaces with quantitative surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy. On dendritic Cu at −0.75 V vs. SHE, the standard adsorption enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy were determined to 1.5±0.5 kJ mol−1, ≈37.9±13.4 J/(mol K), and ≈−9.8±4.0 kJ mol−1, respectively. Comparison of the standard adsorption enthalpy of oxide‐derived Cu and dendritic Cu, as well as their CORR activities, suggests the presence of stronger binding sites on OD Cu, which could favor multicarbon products. The method developed in this work will help establish the correlation between the CO binding energy and the CO(2)RR activity.

Abstract:Monitoring the surface dynamics of catalysts under working conditions is important for a deep understanding of the underlying electrochemical mechanisms towards efficient energy conversion and storage. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy with high surface sensitivity has been considered as a powerful tool for detecting surface adsorbates, but it faces a great challenge when being adopted in surface dynamics investigations during electrocatalysis due to the complication and influence of aqueous environments. This work reports a well designed FTIR cell with tunable micrometre-scale water film over the surface of working electrodes and dual electrolyte/gas channels for in situ synchrotron FTIR tests. By coupling with a facile single-reflection infrared mode, a general in situ synchrotron radiation FTIR (SR-FTIR) spectroscopic method is developed for tracking the surface dynamics of catalysts during the electrocatalytic process. As an example, in situ formed key *OOH is clearly observed on the surface of commercial benchmark IrO2 catalysts during the electrochemical oxygen evolution process based on the developed in situ SR-FTIR spectroscopic method, which demonstrates its universality and feasibility in surface dynamics studies of electrocatalysts under working conditions.
In Situ Characterization of Adsorbates in Solid−Liquid Interfaces by Reflection−Absorption Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:A cell has been designed for the in situ characterization of catalytic intermediates adsorbed at liquid-solid interfaces by single-reflection infrared spectroscopy. The design of our cell is based on previous setups used for the study of electrochemical systems, and consists of a cylindrical Teflon body terminated by a calcium fluoride prism cut in a trapezoidal shape with two faces beveled to 60degrees to let the infrared beam in and out of the cell on one end and by a polished platinum disk (the solid sample) mounted on a retractable rod on the other. The solid sample is cleaned by repeated electrochemical oxidation-reduction cycles using KClO4, HClO4, or H2SO4 electrolytes, and a thin liquid film is then trapped between the two surfaces for the liquid-solid adsorption studies. The performance of this cell was first tested by studies on the adsorption of carbon monoxide from 1.0 M H2SO4 solutions. Significant signals were detected for the adsorbed CO, comparable to those seen under vacuum or under high pressures of CO gas, and also to data reported previously. A more detailed characterization of our experimental setup was carried out with cinchona alkaloids. Discrimination between adsorbed and dissolved species was accomplished by dividing spectra obtained with p- and s-polarized light, and was corroborated by a number of tests, including a variation in the liquid film thickness and the nature of the adsorbing surface. The importance of the in situ characterization was assessed by comparing spectra for quinoline deposited under vacuum versus adsorbed from a carbon tetrachloride solution.
