Abstract:Galileo satellites have laser retroreflector arrays for Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), enabling the co-location of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and SLR techniques onboard navigation satellites. Thanks to this linkage in space, we combine Galileo and SLR on the observation level to derive global geodetic parameters, including geocenter coordinates (GCCs) and Earth rotation parameters (ERPs). Compared to the Galileo-only solution, the combined Galileo + SLR solution diminishes the GCC formal errors by 31.8%, 31.8%, and 28.6%, as well reduces the STD of GCC time series by 18.2%, 22.6%, and 43.2% in the X, Y, and Z components, respectively. The additional SLR observations reduce the correlation between the GCC Z component and B 1C orbital parameter from 0.67 to 0.41. In the combined Galileo + SLR solution, the formal errors of X-pole coordinate, Y-pole coordinate and Length of Day (LOD) parameter are reduced by 4.1%, 3.9% and 11.5%, respectively. In addition, the bias of the LOD parameter with respect to the IERS-20-C04 product is reduced by 55%, and therein the amplitude of the 2nd and 6th harmonics is reduced by 20.2% and 36.3%, respectively. After introducing SLR observations to the Galileo-only solution, the RMS of Galileo orbits is improved by 10.3%, 10.3%, 14.1% for the Along-track, Cross-track, and Radial directions, respectively, and the STD of Galileo clocks is improved by 25.6%, when taking the external precise solution as reference. In conclusion, the combination of GNSS and SLR techniques using the co-locations onboard the Galileo satellites is beneficial to the determination of global geodetic parameters as well as the relevant satellite orbits and clocks.
