Abstract:The objective of this paper is to identify the most sensitive component of a turbogenerator and optimize its availability. To achieve this, we begin by conducting an initial reliability, availability, maintainability, and dependability (RAMD) analysis on each component. Subsequently, a novel stochastic model is developed to analyze the steady‐state availability of the turbogenerator, employing a Markov birth‐death process. In this model, failure and repair rates are assumed to follow an exponential distribution and are statistically independent. To optimize the proposed stochastic model, we employ four population‐based meta‐heuristic approaches: the grey wolf optimization (GWO), the dragonfly algorithm (DA), the grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA), and the whale optimization algorithm (WOA). These algorithms are utilized to find the optimal solution by iteratively improving the availability of the turbogenerator. The performance of each algorithm is evaluated in terms of system availability and execution time, allowing us to identify the most efficient algorithm for this task. Based on the numerical results, it is evident that the WOA outperforms the GWO, GOA, and DA in terms of both system availability and execution time.

Abstract:For the successful operation of any industry or plant continuous availability of power supply is essential. Many of the large-scale plants established their power generation units. Marine power plant having two generators is also fall in this category. In this study, an effort is made to derive and optimize the availability of a marine power plant having two generators, one switch board and distribution switchboards. For this purpose, a mathematical model is proposed using Markov birth death process by considering exponentially distributed failure and repair rates of all the subsystems. The availability expression of marine power plant is derived. Metaheuristic algorithms namely dragonfly algorithm (DA), bat algorithm (BA) and whale optimization (WOA) are employed to optimize the availability of marine power plant. It is revealed that whale optimization algorithm outperforms over dragonfly algorithm (DA), and bat algorithm (BA) in optimum availability prediction and parameter estimation. The numerical values of the availability and estimated parameters are appended as numerical results. The derived results can be utilized in development of maintenance strategies of marine power plants and to carry out design modifications.

Abstract:A generator is the crucial subsystem of steam turbine power plants. Its configuration is very complex, as it is assembled using seven different subsystems. The key objective of the present investigation is to develop an efficient stochastic model for generators under the concepts of cold standby redundancy and exponentially distributed failure and repair laws. The subsystem, namely the cooling and exhaust units, has the provision of cold standby redundancy. For this purpose, a novel stochastic model is proposed using the Markovian methodology, and Chapman–Kolmogorov differential–difference equations are derived. The switch devices are considered perfect, and units after repair work are considered new. To predict the optimal availability and profit of the proposed model, computational intelligence techniques, namely grey wolf optimization, whale optimization algorithm, moth-flame optimizer, dragonfly algorithm, grasshopper optimization algorithm, sine cosine algorithm, black hole algorithm, and ant lion algorithm are used. The impact of various numbers of iterations and population sizes is investigated on the availability, profit, and decision variables of the generator unit. It is revealed that the whale optimization algorithm predicts optimal availability of 0.9999905 after 10 iterations, while in a particular case, the optimal profit is 7199.924. The derived expressions of failure and repair rates, availability, and profit function are useful for system designers and maintenance engineers to design and plan maintenance strategies for generators and steam turbine power plants.

Abstract:Predicting the maximum availability and performance of urea decomposition system in urea manufacturing plant is described as a nondeterministic polynomial time (NP)-hard problem. Soft computing techniques have been extensively utilized by several researcher to handle optimization issue. However, the existing techniques are far away from the optimal solutions as soft computing techniques agonize from numerous problems like as deprived computational speed, stuck in local optima, pre-mature convergence, etc. Therefore, in this work, a novel mathematical model is designed and implemented using Markov process and Chapman–Kolmogorov equations derived by assuming constant failure and repair rates. Thereafter, genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization techniques are utilized for optimizing availability and performance of urea decomposition plants. The needed data have been collected with the help of plant personals and results are also shared with them. Extensive experimental results reveal that the particle swarm optimization-based proposed model outperforms the competitive techniques.

Abstract:A methodology for planning the optimal reliability indices of system components for a composite electric power system based on state sampling non-sequential Monte Carlo simulation using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is presented. The indices designed are forced outage rate of system components and expected demand not served (EDNS) of the system. The optimal reliability planning problem has been formulated as an optimization problem of minimizing the system interruption cost and the component investment cost. The cost functions are modeled as a function of forced outage rate and EDNS. The EDNS of the system for a particular system reliability level is evaluated based on state sampling non-sequential–Monte Carlo simulation and the dc load flow based load curtailment model. PSO algorithm is employed to minimize the reliability planning model. The applications of the proposed methodology are illustrated through case studies carried out using Modified Stagg and El-Abiad 5-bus system and IEEE 14-bus system. The effectiveness of this approach is validated by comparing the results obtained with the solution of reliability planning model using genetic algorithm optimizer.

Abstract:Optimizing reactive power flow in electrical network is an important aspect of system study as the reactive power supports network voltage which needs to be maintained within desirable limits for system reliability. A network consisting of only conventional thermal generators has been extensively studied for optimal active and reactive power dispatch. However, increasing penetration of renewable sources into the grid necessitates power flow studies incorporating these sources. This paper presents a formulation and solution procedure for stochastic optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem with uncertainties in load demand, wind and solar power. Appropriate probability density functions (PDFs) are considered to model the stochastic load demand and the power generated from the renewable energy sources. Numerous scenarios are created running Monte-Carlo simulation and scenario reduction technique is implemented to deal with reduced number of scenarios. Real power loss and steady state voltage deviation of load buses in the network are set as the objectives of optimization. Success history based adaptive differential evolution (SHADE) is adopted as the basic search algorithm. SHADE has been successfully integrated with a constraint handling technique, called epsilon constraint (EC) handling, to handle constraints in ORPD problem. The effectiveness of a proper constraint handling technique is substantiated with case studies for deterministic ORPD on base configurations of IEEE 30-bus and 57-bus systems using SHADE-EC algorithm. The single-objective and multi-objective stochastic ORPD cases are also solved using the SHADE-EC algorithm. The results are discussed, compared and critically analyzed in this study.

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) for determining the optimal reliability parameters of composite system using non-sequential Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) and Generalized Regression Neural Network (GRNN). The cost-benefit based design model has been formulated as an optimization problem of minimizing system interruption cost and component investment cost. Solution of this design model requires the analysis of several reliability levels which needs to evaluate EDNS index for those levels. Evaluation of EDNS in non-sequential MCS requires state adequacy analysis for several thousands of sampled states. In conventional approaches, a dc load flow based load curtailment minimization model is solved for analyzing the adequacy of each sampled state which requires large computational resources. This paper reduces the computational burden by applying GRNN for state adequacy analysis of the sampled states. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is tested on the IEEE 14-bus system.

Abstract:The efficiency of coal-fired power plant depends on various operating parameters such as main steam/reheat steam pressures and temperatures, turbine extraction pressures, and excess air ratio for a given fuel. However, simultaneous optimization of all these operating parameters to achieve the maximum plant efficiency is a challenging task. This study deals with the coupled ANN and GA based (neuro-genetic) optimization of a high ash coal-fired supercritical power plant in Indian climatic condition to determine the maximum possible plant efficiency. The power plant simulation data obtained from a flow-sheet program, “Cycle-Tempo” is used to train the artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the energy input through fuel (coal). The optimum set of various operating parameters that result in the minimum energy input to the power plant is then determined by coupling the trained ANN model as a fitness function with the genetic algorithm (GA). A unit size of 800MWe currently under development in India is considered to carry out the thermodynamic analysis based on energy and exergy. Apart from optimizing the design parameters, the developed model can also be used for on-line optimization when quick response is required. Furthermore, the effect of various coals on the thermodynamic performance of the optimized power plant is also determined.

Abstract:The paper deals with performance optimisation for ethanol manufacturing system of distillery plant using particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm. The performance of the system is first estimated with the help of transition diagram and a mathematical model based on Markov approach in real working environment. The differential equations associated with the transition diagram are developed assuming that the failure and repair rate parameters of each component follow the exponential distribution. The long-run availability expression for the system has been derived with probabilistic approach using normalising condition. The availability of the system is then computed with the help of PSO technique and compared with the genetic algorithm (GA) results to verify the solution. The results show that PSO modifies the solution more precisely and provides the optimum combinations of failure and repair rate parameters for various subsystems which are practically useful in maintenance planning for plant personnel.

Abstract:Distributed generation (DG) integration is a critical requirement in modern distribution networks to enhance power grid quality. An essential aspect of this endeavor involves strategically placing and sizing various DG resources optimally. The primary objective of this study is to determine an efficient approach for allocating Photovoltaic (PV) and Wind Turbine resources to minimize overall power losses within the grid. To achieve this goal, we introduce a novel hybrid optimization technique that combines Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) with Genetic Algorithms (GAs). Furthermore, we explore the influence of factors such as variations in PV daily consumption, load profile fluctuations, penetration levels, and changing climatic conditions on the optimization process across two comprehensive case studies presented in this research. Our modeling results reveal that the hybrid PSO-GA approach outperforms traditional PSO in terms of integration speed, power loss reduction, and enhancements to grid quality, including voltage and frequency profiles. Additionally, this study highlights the dynamic impact of load curve fluctuations and climate changes on the optimal location and capacity of DG resources, leading to a substantial reduction in grid power losses.

Abstract:Determining the ideal size of maintenance staff is a daunting task, especially in the operation of large and complex mechanical systems such as thermal power plants. On the one hand, a significant investment in maintenance is necessary to maintain the availability of the system. On the other hand, it can significantly affect the profit of the plant. Several mathematical modeling techniques have been used in many different ways to predict and improve the availability and reliability of such systems. This work uses a modeling tool called generalized stochastic Petri net (GSPN) in a new way, aiming to determine the effect that the number of maintenance teams has on the availability and performance of a coal-fired power plant cooling tower. The results obtained through the model are confronted with a thermodynamic analysis of the cooling tower that shows the influence of this system’s performance on the efficiency of the power plant. Thus, it is possible to determine the optimal size of the repair team in order to maximize the plant’s performance with the least possible investment in maintenance personnel.

Abstract:Uncertainties in the process industries are the biggest challenge for smooth operation. This study is based on the use of artificial intelligence based surrogate modeling for predicting and optimizing emissions in combustion sections of cement manufacturing plants under uncertainty. Uncertainties in feed flow rate, kiln air flow rate, tertiary air flow rate, and coal flow rate in the combustion sections of the plant are the subject of the study. Initially, an Aspen Plus model of the kiln and calciner units of the cement plant was developed and converted into a dynamic mode to generate 700 data samples with 10% uncertainty. Then, genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and GA-PSO frameworks were used to optimize the process conditions using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models as surrogates. The GA-PSO framework exhibited an advantage over GA and PSO in predicting and optimizing CO 2 , and CO emissions. Besides, ANN models were used as a surrogate within the SOBOL and Fourier Amplitude Sensitivity Test frameworks for performing sensitivity analysis of the process. The sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the process conditions with the highest sensitivity toward the emissions. Based on sensitivity analysis, total coal and tertiary air were found to be more influencing parameters on process output. This study provides a baseline for real-time predicting and optimizing emissions at the cement plant.

Abstract:Most studies on multi-state series–parallel systems focus on the static type of system architecture. However, it is insufficient to model many complex industrial systems having several operation phases and each requires a subset of the subsystems combined together to perform certain tasks. To bridge this gap, this study takes into account this type of dynamic behavior in the multi-state series–parallel system and proposes an analytical approach to calculate the system availability and the operation cost. In this approach, Markov process is used to model the dynamics of system phase changing and component state changing, Markov reward model is used to calculate the operation cost associated with the dynamics, and universal generating function (UGF) is used to build system availability function from the system phase model and the component models. Based upon these models, an optimization problem is formulated to minimize the total system cost with the constraint that system availability is greater than a desired level. The genetic algorithm is then applied to solve the optimization problem. The proposed modeling and solution procedures are illustrated on a system design problem modified from a real-world maritime oil transportation system.
Uncertain Robustness Optimization of Steam-Turbine Generator Set Control System

Abstract:In order to meet the control specifications of thermal process with uncertainties, two uncertain robustness optimization methods are presented, utilizing stochastic and fuzzy theory. Fuzzy credibility robustness, based on newly developed fuzzy credibility theory, is a new concept other than probability robustness, which could provide more information. For the stochastic and fuzzy multi-objective programming problem respectively, NSGA-II algorithm combined with Monte-Carlo experiments are used to obtain the Pareto robustness solutions. Pessimistic value criterion is adopted to compare two uncertain variables. The above two methods are applied to a steam-turbine generator set control system optimization problem. Compared with those controller design methods based on nominal conditions, the results demonstrate the two new design methods have better robustness, and prove their feasibilities and advantages.

Abstract:Effective maintenance strategies are of utmost significance for system engineering due to their direct linkage with financial aspects and safety of the plants’ operation. At a point where the state of a system, for instance, level of its deterioration, can be constantly observed, a strategy based on condition-based maintenance (CBM) may be affected; wherein upkeep of the system is done progressively on the premise of monitored state of the system. In this article, a multicomponent framework is considered that is continuously kept under observation. In order to decide an optimal deterioration stage for the said system, Genetic Algorithm (GA) technique has been utilized that figures out when its preventive maintenance should be carried out. The system is configured into a multiobjective problem that is aimed at optimizing the two desired objectives, namely, profitability and accessibility. For the sake of reality, a prognostic model portraying the advancements of deteriorating system has been employed that will be based on utilization of continuous event simulation techniques. In this regard, Monte Carlo (MC) simulation has been shortlisted as it can take into account a wide range of probable options that can help in reducing uncertainty. The inherent benefits proffered by the said simulation technique are fully utilized to display various elements of a deteriorating system working under stressed environment. The proposed synergic model (GA and MC) is considered to be more effective due to the employment of “drop-by-drop approach” that permits successful drive of the related search process with regard to the best optimal solutions.

Abstract:With the modern era of a restructured power system environment, there are various power quality issues faced when it is being transferred within different utilities. To overcome these issues and deliver maximum effective power maintaining its quality in terms of Voltage Stability, Losses, distortion in the signal received etc. is the major challenge. This paper presents the enthalpy based Grey Wolf Optimisation (GWO) model and aims to solve the issues of the node voltage deviation power system, feeder power losses, power factor, and total harmonic distortion in a power system. The results of the model presented is compared with different conventional algorithms and found to be most suitable due to its simplicity, faster convergence and high search precision. The analysis of the presented method is performed on IEEE 30 and 57 test bus systems in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. When compared with the conventional models, our proposed method shows 0.49, 0.69 and 1.41% better fitness accuracy for IEEE 30 and 3.23, 2.37 and 1.45% better for IEEE 57 than PSO, ABC and GA respectively. The proposed method has proved to be effective in terms of all the objectives stated above and attaining the maximum quality of power.

Abstract:In power systems, voltage stability and power quality are major problems. Hence, this work formulated a novel flexible control algorithm for STATCOM in order to mitigate power quality issues in micro grids. Further to improve the performance of the STATCOM, an intelligent optimised ANFIS controller has been incorporated. The suggested technique has two parts; GWO is employed in the first stage to learn the ANFIS parameters. The performance of the suggested ANFIS-GWO approach is assessed in the second stage. Thus, the efficacy of the proposed controller is examined under different case studies using both simulation and experimental results. From the results, it was found that when the system is subjected to load changes, the dynamic performance of the stem is improved and the dc link voltage remains constant. As the proposed controller achieves less fluctuation, it can be considered as suitable controller for micro-grids.
