Abstract:Parametric sources in quantum optics usually require some form of spectro-temporal control for conditional generation of high-purity single-photon states, but their properties have not yet been optimized using integrated microchips. Using external short-pulse lasers and separate devices for pump preparation and for photon generation, as is traditional, incurs many impediments such as reduced performance, increased loss, high cost, and limited scalability. To overcome these limitations, here we demonstrate a circuit including high-bandwidth, high-extinction ratio electro-optic modulators for pump-pulse preparation fully integrated with high-quality factor ( Q ) microresonators for efficient parametric nonlinearity, together with seamlessly interconnecting waveguides. The microchip uses different optical materials on a common platform and a multi-layer integrated photonic architecture. Using this, we control the joint spectrum of room-temperature biphoton generation for the first time on a single integrated microchip, and demonstrate that the theoretical purity bound can be achieved.
Shaping entangled photons through thick scattering media using an advanced wave beacon

Abstract:Entangled photons provide transformative new paths in the fields of communication, sensing, and computing. However, when entangled photons propagate through a complex medium such as a biological tissue or a turbulent atmosphere, their correlations are scrambled. Using wavefront shaping to compensate for the scattering and retrieve the two-photon correlations is challenging due to the low signal-to-noise ratio of the two-photon signal. While previous works partly addressed this challenge by using feedback from a strong classical laser beam that co-propagates with the entangled photons, such methods frequently depend on assumptions about the complex medium, limiting the applicability of quantum wavefront shaping. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a new feedback mechanism that is inspired by Klyshko's advanced wave picture, in which the classical laser beam counter-propagates with one of the entangled photons and co-propagates with the other. The new Klyshko feedback allows compensation of scattering in thick samples and even in situations where each photon propagates through a different scattering medium. Since the advanced wave picture applies whenever optical reciprocity is valid, such Klyshko optimization can be utilized across a wide range of configurations, offering a robust and alignment-free setup. We therefore believe this protocol will open the door for real-world applications of quantum wavefront shaping.

Shaping Single Photons through Multimode Optical Fibers using Mechanical Perturbations

Abstract:The capacity of information delivered by single photons is boosted by encoding high-dimensional quantum dits in their transverse shape. Transporting such high-dimensional quantum dits in optical networks may be accomplished using multimode optical fibers, which support the low-loss transmission of multiple spatial modes over existing infrastructure. However, when photons propagate through a multimode fiber their transverse shape gets scrambled because of mode mixing and modal interference. This is usually corrected using free-space spatial light modulators, inhibiting a robust all-fiber operation. In this work, we demonstrate an all-fiber approach for controlling the shape of single photons and the spatial correlations between entangled photon pairs, using carefully controlled mechanical perturbations of the fiber. We optimize these perturbations to localize the spatial distribution of a single photon or the spatial correlations of photon pairs in a single spot, enhancing the signal in the optimized spot by over an order of magnitude. Using the same approach we show a similar enhancement for coupling light from a multimode fiber into a single-mode fiber.

Abstract:Free-space quantum key distribution is gaining increasing interest as a leading platform for long range quantum communication. However, the sensitivity of quantum correlations to scattering induced by turbulent atmospheric links limits the performance of such systems. Recently, methods for compensating the scattering of entangled photons have been demonstrated, allowing for real-time optimization of their quantum correlations. In this Letter, we demonstrate the use of wavefront shaping for compensating the scattering of non-collinear and non-degenerate entangled photons. These results demonstrate the applicability of wavefront shaping schemes for protocols utilizing the large bandwidth and emission angle of the entangled photons.

Abstract:The transmission of flying qubits carried by itinerant photons is fundamental in quantum communication networks. To physically match the receiver system, the single photons must be prepared in proper shapes, and this leads to a variety of flying-qubit control problems. In this paper, we introduce the optimal control theory to the shaping of single photons, where the control to be optimized are coherent driving fields. We design gradient-based algorithms to minimize the shape difference between the emitted and desired single photons. Simulation results show that the optimization can achieve high-fidelity in the generation of decaying photon shapes with a two-level atom. However, its performance is limited and hence has to be combined with incoherence controls when the target shape has a rising part.
Coherently driven quantum features using a linear optics-based polarization-basis control

Abstract:Quantum entanglement generation is generally known to be impossible by any classical means. According to Poisson statistics, coherent photons are not considered quantum particles due to the bunching phenomenon. Recently, a coherence approach has been applied to interpret quantum features such as the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect, Franson-type nonlocal correlation, and delayed-choice quantum eraser, where the quantum feature is due to basis-product superposition at the cost of 50 % photon loss. For this, it has been understood that a fixed sum-phase relation between paired photons is the bedrock of quantum entanglement. Here, coherently driven quantum features of the HOM effects are presented using linear optics-based polarization-basis control. Like quantum operator-based destructive interference in the HOM theory, a perfectly coherent analysis shows the same photon bunching of the paired coherent photons on a beam splitter, whereas individual output intensities are uniform.

Deterministic Shaping of Quantum Light Statistics

Abstract:We propose a theoretical method for the deterministic shaping of quantum light via photon number state selective interactions. Nonclassical states of light are an essential resource for high-precision optical techniques that rely on photon correlations and noise reshaping. Notable techniques include quantum enhanced interferometry, ghost imaging, and generating fault-tolerant codes for continuous variable optical quantum computing. We show that a class of nonlinear-optical resonators can transform many-photon wavefunctions to produce structured states of light with nonclassical noise statistics. The devices, based on parametric down conversion, utilize the Kerr effect to tune photon-number-dependent frequency matching, inducing photon-number-selective interactions. With a high-amplitude coherent pump, the number-selective interaction shapes the noise of a two-mode squeezed cavity state with minimal dephasing, illustrated with simulations. We specify the requisite material properties to build the device and highlight the remaining material degrees of freedom which offer flexible material design.

Achieving Robust and High-Fidelity Quantum Control Via Spectral Phase Optimization

Abstract:Achieving high-fidelity control of quantum systems is of fundamental importance in physics, chemistry and quantum information sciences. However, the successful implementation of a high-fidelity quantum control scheme also requires robustness against control field fluctuations. Here, we demonstrate a robust optimization method for control of quantum systems by optimizing the spectral phase of an ultrafast laser pulse, which is accomplished in the framework of frequency domain quantum optimal control theory. By incorporating a filtering function of frequency into the optimization algorithm, our numerical simulations in an abstract two-level quantum system as well as in a three-level atomic rubidium show that the optimization procedure can be enforced to search optimal solutions while achieving remarkable robustness against the control field fluctuations, providing an efficient approach to optimize the spectral phase of the ultrafast laser pulse to achieve a desired final quantum state of the system.

Abstract:Abstract Quantum entanglement is an integral part of quantum optics and has been exploited in areas such as computation, cryptography and metrology. The entanglement between photons can be present in various degrees of freedom (DOFs), and even the simplest bi-partite systems can occupy a large Hilbert space. Therefore, it is desirable to exploit this multi-dimensional space for various quantum applications by fully controlling the properties of the entangled photons in multiple DOFs. While current entangled-photon sources are capable of generating entanglement in one or more DOFs, there is currently a lack of practical techniques that can shape and control the entanglement properties in multiple DOFs. Here we show that cascading two or more entangled-photon sources with tunable linear media in between allows us to generate photon-pairs whose entanglement properties can be tailored and shaped in the frequency and polarisation domains. We first develop a quantum mechanical model to study the quantum state generated from the cascade structure with special considerations paid to the effects of pump temporal coherence, linear dispersion, and in-structure polarisation transformation applied between the entangled-photon sources. We then experimentally generate photon-pairs with tunable entanglement properties by manipulating the dispersion and birefringence properties of the linear medium placed in between two entangled-photon sources. This is done in an all-fibre, phase stable, and alignment-free configuration. Our results show that the cascade structure offers a great deal of flexibility in tuning the properties of entangled photons in multiple DOFs, opening up a new avenue in engineering quantum light sources.

Abstract:We have constructed an automated learning apparatus to control quantum systems. By directing intense shaped ultrafast laser pulses into a variety of samples and using a measurement of the system as a feedback signal, we are able to reshape the laser pulses to direct the system into a desired state. The feedback signal is the input to an adaptive learning algorithm. This algorithm programs a computer-controlled, acousto-optic modulator pulse shaper. The learning algorithm generates new shaped laser pulses based on the success of previous pulses in achieving a predetermined goal.

A coherence method generating macroscopic quantum features using polarization-basis control and its projection measurements of laser light

Abstract:Quantum entanglement between paired photons is the foundation of optical quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum networks. Traditionally, quantum information science has focused on the particle nature of photons at the microscopic scale, often neglecting the phase information of single photons, even for the bipartite quantum entanglement. Recently, a coherence-based approach has been explored to understand the so-called quantum mystery of nonlocal intensity fringes emerging from local randomness. Here, a pure coherence method is presented to create macroscopic quantum features using conventional laser light via linear optics-based measurement modifications. To achieve this, a polarization-basis control of the laser light is conducted to generate indistinguishable characteristics between orthogonally polarized light pairs. Using projection measurements of the polarization-controlled light pairs, we derive coherence solutions of local randomness and nonlocal correlations between independently controlled local parameters, where a fixed relative phase relationship between paired lights is an essential condition to determine the corresponding Bell states.

Abstract:We propose an extension of coherent control using laser-synthesized free-electron matter waves. In contrast to coherent control schemes exploiting optical coherences to steer the dynamics of matter waves, we analyze the opposite and investigate the control of quantum light emission driven by laser-sculpted coherent free-electron matter waves. We apply this concept to the control of entangled photon-pair emission in electron-atom collisions, in which the incident electron wave packet, colliding with a target atom $B$, is engineered by interferometric resonantly-enhanced multiphoton ionization of a parent atom $A$. Each ionization pathway leads to electron wave packets that coherently interfere during temporal evolution in the continuum. Their mutual coherence can be controlled by adjusting the relative phases or time delays of the frequency components of the ionizing field contributing to the interfering pathways. We report coherent control of entangled photon-pair generation in radiative photo-cascade emission upon decay of the target atom after inelastic excitation triggered by the collision with the synthesized electron wave packet.

Quantum Optimal Control Theory for the Shaping of Flying Qubits

Abstract:The control of flying qubits carried by itinerant photons is ubiquitous in quantum networks. Beside their logical states, the shape of flying qubits must also be tailored for high-efficiency information transmission. In this paper, we introduce quantum optimal control theory to the shaping of flying qubits. Building on the flying-qubit control model established in our previous work, we design objective functionals for the generation of shaped flying qubits under practical constraints on the emitters and couplers. Numerical simulations employing gradient-descent algorithms demonstrate that the optimized control can effectively mitigate unwanted level and photon leakage caused by these non-idealities. Notably, while coherent control offers limited shaping capacity with a fixed coupler, it can significantly enhance the shaping performance when combined with a tunable coupler that has restricted tunability. The proposed optimal control framework provides a systematic approach to achieving high-quality control of flying qubits using realistic quantum devices.

Tutorial: Shaping the Spatial Correlations of Entangled Photon Pairs

Abstract:Quantum imaging enhances imaging systems performance, potentially surpassing fundamental limits such as noise and resolution. However, these schemes have limitations and are still a long way from replacing classical techniques. Therefore, there is a strong focus on improving the practicality of quantum imaging methods, with the goal of finding real-world applications. With this in mind, in this tutorial we describe how the concepts of classical light shaping can be applied to imaging schemes based on entangled photon pairs. We detail two basic experimental configurations in which a spatial light modulator is used to shape the spatial correlations of a photon pair state and highlight the key differences between this and classical shaping. We then showcase two recent examples that expand on these concepts to perform aberration and scattering correction with photon pairs. We include specific details on the key steps of these experiments, with the goal that this can be used as a guide for building photon-pair-based imaging and shaping experiments.

Abstract:Shaping and controlling electromagnetic fields at the nanoscale is vital for advancing efficient and compact devices used in optical communications, sensing and metrology, as well as for the exploration of fundamental properties of light-matter interaction and optical nonlinearity. Real-time feedback for active control over light can provide a significant advantage in these endeavors, compensating for ever-changing experimental conditions and inherent or accumulated device flaws. Scanning nearfield microscopy, being slow in essence, cannot provide such a real-time feedback that was thus far possible only by scattering-based microscopy. Here, we present active control over nanophotonic near-fields with direct feedback facilitated by real-time near-field imaging. We use far-field wavefront shaping to control nanophotonic patterns in surface waves, demonstrating translation and splitting of near-field focal spots at nanometer-scale precision, active toggling of different near-field angular momenta and correction of patterns damaged by structural defects using feedback enabled by the real-time operation. The ability to simultaneously shape and observe nanophotonic fields can significantly impact various applications such as nanoscale optical manipulation, optical addressing of integrated quantum emitters and near-field adaptive optics.

Nonseparable states of light: From quantum to classical

Abstract:Controlling the various degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) of structured light at both quantum and classical levels is of paramount importance in optics. It is a conventional paradigm to treat diverse DoFs separately in light shaping. While, the more general case of nonseparable states of light, in which two or more DoFs are coupled in a nonseparable way, has become topical recently. Importantly, classical nonseparable states of light are mathematically analogue to quantum entangled states. Such similarity has hatched attractive studies in structured light, e.g. the spin-orbit coupling in vector beams. However, nonseparable classical states of light are still treated in a fragmented fashion, while its forms are not limited by vector beams and its potential is certainly not fully exploited. For instance, exotic space-time coupled pulses nontrivial light shaping towards ultrafast time scales, and ray-wave geometric beams provide new dimensions in optical manipulations. Here we provide a bird's eye view on the rapidly growing but incoherent body of work on general nonseparable states involving various DoFs of light and introduce a unified framework for their classification and tailoring, providing a perspective on new opportunities for both fundamental science and applications.

Optimizing type-I polarization-entangled photons

Abstract:Optical quantum information processing needs ultra-bright sources of entangled photons, especially from synchronizable femtosecond lasers and low-cost cw-diode lasers. Decoherence due to timing information and spatial mode-dependent phase has traditionally limited the brightness of such sources. We report on a variety of methods to optimize type-I polarization-entangled sources--the combined use of different compensation techniques to engineer high-fidelity pulsed and cw-diode laser-pumped sources, as well as the first production of polarization-entanglement directly from the highly nonlinear biaxial crystal BiB(3)O(6) (BiBO). Using spatial compensation, we show more than a 400-fold improvement in the phase flatness, which otherwise limits efficient collection of entangled photons from BiBO, and report the highest fidelity to date (99%) of any ultrafast polarization-entanglement source. Our numerical code, available on our website, can design optimal compensation crystals and simulate entanglement from a variety of type-I phasematched nonlinear crystals.

Abstract:Quantum coherent control of ultrafast bond making and the subsequent molecular dynamics is crucial for the realization of a new photochemistry, where a shaped laser field is actively driving the chemical system in a coherent way from the thermal initial state of the reactants to the final state of the desired products. We demonstrate here coherent control over the relative yields of Mg$_2$ molecules that are generated via photoassociation and subsequently photodriven into different groups of final states. The strong-field process involves non-resonant multiphoton femtosecond photoassociation of a pair of thermally hot magnesium atoms into a bound Mg$_{2}$ molecule and subsequent molecular dynamics on electronically excited states. The branching-ratio control is achieved with linearly chirped laser pulses, utilizing the different chirp dependence that various groups of final molecular states display for their post-pulse population. Our study establishes the feasibility of high degree coherent control over quantum molecular dynamics that is initiated by femtosecond photoassociation of thermal atoms.

On-chip pulse shaping of entangled photons

Abstract:We demonstrate spectral shaping of entangled photons with a six-channel microring-resonator-based silicon photonic pulse shaper. Through precise calibration of thermal phase shifters in a microresonator-based pulse shaper, we demonstrate line-by-line phase control on a 3~GHz grid for two frequency-bin-entangled qudits, corresponding to Hilbert spaces of up to $6\times 6$ ($3\times 3$) dimensions for shared (independent) signal-idler filters. The pulse shaper's fine spectral resolution enables control of nanosecond-scale temporal features, which are observed by direct coincidence detection of biphoton correlation functions that show excellent agreement with theory. This work marks, to our knowledge, the first demonstration of biphoton pulse shaping using an integrated spectral shaper and holds significant promise for applications in quantum information processing.
